My Students My name is Caroline and | am a teacher in a 6:1:1 classroom with students with Autism. Many of my students need a lot of sensory input throughout the day to keep them calm and focused on their academics. ‘My goal is for my students to be able to become as independent as possible. This coming school year, I will be working with 2nd grade students with severe autism. | am looking to add a sensory area with more hands-on activities for my students so I can better meet their learning needs. | am also looking to create a fun, relaxed reading area to provide a more fiexible learning environment. My Project The chairs and bean bags wilt provide my students with a better atmosphere to look through books to help them becoming independent readers. A seating area will allow me to read to my students in a comfortable, safe, and quiet environment. | will be able to teach my students many literacy lessons including story elements as well as introduce them to grammar. The sensory toys and paint will allow my students to express themselves as well as give them breaks which will allow them to release tension when they are stressed. I believe this project will help me to be more flexible within my room, and provide that much needed hands- on piece to ensure the most successful outcomes. A Trip To Help My Readers Grow! ‘My students need a listening center and read alongs to strengthen their literacy skills. ‘My Students ‘My students all have unique learning styles. | am eagerly looking for ‘opportunities to create fun ways of learning. | feel creating a listening center will help me meet their needs. This listening station will benefit my students who have difficulty focusing during a traditional read aloud. It will help my students block distractions and comprehend a story. In addition, this listening center would enrich the multisensory experience, My Project Sight words and new vocabulary words would be seen and heard. This, would increase their ability to speak and read more fluently. This learning station will help strengthen their literacy skils such as ‘comprehension, fluency, and word recognition. The center would be used daily by a small group of students This learning station can also be used as a calming technique for students who may feel frustrated or overwhelmed.
