Quadrilaterals and Irregular Quadrilaterals

Standards
TEK #

Knowledge

Skill:

Geometry and measurement. The student

applies mathematical process standards to
analyze attributes of two-dimensional
geometric figures to develop
generalizations about their properties.

- use attributes to recognize rhombuses,

parallelograms, trapezoids, rectangles, and

squares as examples of quadrilaterals and draw
examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong
to any of these subcategories

Student Objective(s)
- Students must know examples and nonexamples of the different quadrilaterals. They
must be able to represent them in pictorial form.
- Students must discuss with their peers on what they learned from the lesson.
- Students will use what they have learned from the notes and their prior knowledge of
quadrilaterals and non-quadrilaterals.

Vocabulary/Academic Language for this lesson

Quadrilateral- is a polygon with four edges (or sides) and four vertices or corners.
Polygon- a plane figure with at least three straight sides and angles, and typically five or more

Lesson Procedure:

Student:

Pencils
Provided by Teacher Worksheets
Index Cards

Lesson Frame:
We will

study the characteristics of quadrilaterals and distinguish the different examples and
nonexamples of quadrilaterals.

I will

study the examples and nonexamples of the different types of quadrilaterals.

Anticipatory Set/Hook

Time:

I will be presenting a video with a basic understanding of quadrilaterals, presenting

some characteristics and names of quadrilaterals with examples.
Video- Quadrilateral Song (Radioactive)

3 minutes

Question(s):

Blooms:

What words stood out most in the video?

Evaluate

What do you already know about quadrilaterals?

Remembering

Can anyone provide an example of a quadrilateral?

Applying

Instructional Strategy/Modeling:

Time:

I will be giving the students index cards to write down any characteristics of
quadrilaterals that are presented in the video and then we will discuss them and
use them in the guided practice on notes.

2 minutes

Question(s):

Blooms:

Check for Understanding:

Time:

The students will converse with their table groups about what they have learned in
the video and compare what they wrote on their answers and write what they
might have missed.

2 minutes

Question(s):

Blooms:

What is one note that your neighbor had that you didn't?

Applying

What did you learn from the video that you didn't already know?

Understanding

Guided Practice:

Time:

I will give the students a worksheet to use for notes on the independent
practice, we will discuss and write down the different characteristics and the
examples of irregular quadrilaterals and quadrilaterals.

3 minutes

Independent Practice:

Time:

Students will get a worksheet that is an overall review on the lesson. They will
use their notes and prior knowledge to classify and eliminate irregular
quadrilaterals from regular quadrilaterals. As well as matching the correct
names of quadrilaterals with the corresponding shape.

3 minutes

Closure:

Time:

I will ask the students what they learned from the lesson and ask questions on
what they take away with them from the lesson as well as discuss and review what
was learned and how and where to apply in the outside world.

2 minutes

Question(s):

Blooms:

What are some real world examples of quadrilaterals?

Applying

Can somebody tell me what we learned today?
