Instructional Routines and Procedures

Beginning of Class Routine:

I will have the sign in sheet, warm-up activity and supplies laid out on the student station
before class begins with instructions also written on the board, and be at the door to greet
students as they enter.
1. Students will enter the classroom quietly and sign in
2. After signing in they will turn their homework into the homework tray and collect the
warm-up and supplies
3. Students will take their warm-up assignment to their seats and start working
independently unless the instructions say otherwise. Class begins the moment they enter.
4. When the bell rings I will close the door, take the homework and sign in sheet and begin
class with the instructions and class agenda (also posted on the board)
5. If a student arrives after the bell they will quietly and quickly get their things and take
their seat. They must sign in after class, if they are not more than 15 minutes late without
a pass they will receive a tardy. If they have a pass they will be counted present.
The first 10-15 minutes of class will be dedicated to the warm-up assignment depending
on time needed. After this we will move into the main lesson/activity.
Attendance Procedure:
Since I will be teaching at the secondary level the students will be in charge of their own
attendance. This will foster independence and personal responsibility while freeing up
valuable instruction time.
1. There will be a sign-in list for students to initial as they enter the room. The first thing
they will do is sign in.
2. I will use the sign in sheet to send the attendance to the attendance office.
3. If a student arrives after the class they will not disrupt the class but quickly and quietly
take their seat and get started on whatever the class is currently working on. They are
responsible for getting what they missed on their own time.
4. After class they will need to come sign in and receive a Tardy unless they have a pass
which will excuse them to be marked present. If a student doesnt sign in they will be
marked absent.
The policy will be explained the first day and they will be reminded to sign in over the
first few weeks. I will also call role the first week or too as well so I can try and learn
their names.
Homework Policy:
The students will be assigned a variety of homework assignments to supplement the
curriculum, review or practice current lessons, or prepare them for the next lessons.
These will come in a variety of forms like assigned reading, videos, worksheets, projects
and papers.
Homework must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. Since
assignments will be given ahead of time late homework will not be accepted without a
valid excuse (i.e. student arrived after it was collected with a pass so theyll need to turn
it in then). Failure to turn in homework will result in a zero on that assignment.
1. Students will put their name, class period and date at the top of their completed
homework assignment before turning it in.

2. As they enter, the students will drop their homework off in the homework tray. Then
continue with the beginning of class routine.
3. After the bell I will collect the work from the tray and put it in my grading folder for the
class. Once the lesson begins no more homework will be accepted
4. If the student arrives late, they may drop off their homework with their pass without
disrupting the class. If Tardy without a pass they may do the same but can lose points for
lateness.
5. If absent the day a homework assignment is due they will turn it in the day they get back
in the same way as a normal homework assignment due that day. Homework assigned the
day of an absence is due the next day and will be in the missing assignments bin/folders
for them to get.
6. Homework will be graded and handed back the next day (or as soon as possible in the
case of projects or papers which may take a little more time) as they work on their warmups.
7. Students who are late/tardy will get their graded homework back at the end of class when
they sign in.
Passes:
During the class period the students are expected to be in class. If they need to leave class
for any reason they will need to sign out and take a pass then sign back in when they
return.
Restroom and Water fountain Passes:
Students needing to go to the restroom or to the water fountain will use the regular hall
pass. Since they are at the secondary level they will be allowed to regulate their own
restroom breaks unless it becomes a problem.
There will be one hall pass, and only one student will leave the room at a time. If another
person needs to go to the restroom or water fountain and the pass is already in use they
must wait patiently at their seat and keep working.
There is no lining up at the door to take the pass; the pass is available on a first come first
serve basis, and there is no fighting over the pass or both participants lose the privilege to
use it.
A student going to the restroom should not take more than 10 min and one going to the
water fountain should not take more than 3 min.
Only 5 students total may use the pass in any given period.
1. A student needing to go to the restroom or water fountain will quietly get up, walk to the
door, write their name, destination and the time on the sign-out sheet.
2. They will take the pass, quietly leave to the water fountain/restroom, and return in the
allotted time.
3. When they get back they will quietly enter, sign back in and return to their seat without
disrupting their peers. They are responsible for getting the information they missed on
their own time as class will not stop for them to catch up.
4. If a fire drill is called while returning/going to the restroom the student will go outside to
the class meeting spot and meet us there. After the drill they will return to class/head to
the restroom and upon returning sign in and put fire drill by their time to explain the time
being too long.

If students abuse the restroom/water fountain privilege they will lose the ability to self
regulate and need to ask permission to use the pass. If problems still persist they may lose
the privilege all together.
Students should have everything they need when they enter, but if they need to get
something from a locker they must raise their hand for permission and if granted sign
out/in on the same sheet and use that pass. They will count as one of the five students
using it.
Clinic Passes:
To go to the nurse students will need to ask for a clinic pass.
1. The student will raise their hand and ask for a pass to the nurse.
2. I will fill out the clinic pass for them and they will quietly leave
3. When they return they will hand back their pass take their seat and resume working
4. Should a student need assistance to get to the nurse safely I will assign a responsible
student as a buddy. The buddy student will get a blue pass to escort them down and
return, handing in their pass and going back to work in the same manner.
5. If the nature of the medical emergency is too severe for them to get there by themselves
(passing out, asthma attack, seizer) the clinic will be called and a student runner sent to
get help while I check on the student).
Teacher Passes:
1. If a student is called out/sent out of the room I will write them a teacher pass for where
they need to go and give it to them with verbal instructions to go there.
2. As soon as they get the pass they will, quickly gather their things if need be, and leave the
class quietly so they do not disrupt their peers.
3. They will proceed immediately to where they are told to go without dawdling in the halls
or goofing off.
4. When they return they will enter quietly, hand in their pass and proceed to their seat to
resume their work without disrupting their peers.
Procedures for Emergency Drills:
Once a month schools conduct emergency drills to prepare for fires, natural disasters, and
safety protocols. These will effectively shut down classes the period they happen for the
duration of the drill.
During a Fire or Tornado Drill the class will/may have to leave the room.
1. When the alarm sounds the class will stop what they are doing, calmly and quietly
line up at the door.
2. Without talking we will evacuate the room and proceed to our designated meeting
spot as a class. Students in the restroom etc. will join us there.
3. Once at the meeting area I will do a head count/call roll to make sure everyone is
there. If someone is missing I will report it to the administrators on duty. No
student will leave the meeting spot to seek out another student.
4. When the all clear signal is given we will silently return to class together.
5. Students will return to their seats and instruction will resume.
During an external lockdown we will not need to leave the room (unless were in a
portable in which case we use the fire/tornado drill procedure to out designated in school
location).
1. When the drill is called students will remain seated.
2. I will close the windows/blinds and lock the door.

3. In most cases class will continue quietly unless instructed otherwise.

During an interior lockdown, class will cease until the lockdown is lifted.
1. Students will quickly and quietly leave their desks and sit down along the wall
(same wall as the door but away from the door).
2. I will turn off the lights (if theyre on), close windows/blinds, lock door and block
off its window. Then I will stay along that wall closest to the door in case I need
to prevent an intruder from entering.
3. Students will remain in complete silence pretending they are not there.
4. After the all clear is given students will quietly return to their desks and class will
resume where it left off.
Class Discussions and Debates:
Discussion and Debates which will have their own set of procedures. These will typically
be announced ahead of time so student can review what theyve learns. I will use the
assessments to see where the students are and what needs to be reinforced.
All students will be required to contribute to the discussion/debate
1. Students will move their desks to prepare for the activity. For discussions all the desks
will be in a big circle around the room. For a debate the desks will be facing each, half on
one side and half on the other.
2. Students will get out their name cards they made the first day and place them on their
desks so they can interact with their peers by name. (For a debate they will need time to
discuss amongst their group to prepare their arguments).
3. I will ask as a moderator, and may ask questions or encourage participation; the students
will do the balk of the topic discussing their ideas and understandings of the topics.
4. Only one person may speak at a time. There will be no yelling or talking over someone.
5. Students will respect each other and each others opinions whether they agree with it or
not. If they disagree they will not attack the person but the argument in a polite manner.
(We will go over how to do this before having our first discussion).
6. When addressing a fellow student they will use that students name.
7. Whenever possible students should say where they are getting their information from.
8. After the debate/Discussion students will return the desks to their usual position.
End of Class Routine:
We will start our end of class routine about 2-5 minutes before the bell based on time
needed to clean up.
I will be dismissing the class not the bell.
1. I will ask students some checking for understanding questions or have a closing
activity/exit ticket for them.
2. I will give the students instructions for cleaning up.
3. They will quietly turn in any work by rows, either passing the work up for me to collect
or turning it in to the turn in bins by row as instructed.
4. Without talking they will gather their possessions and clean up around their desks.
5. When they have finished cleaning up/gathering their things they will wait quietly at their
desks to be dismissed. No one will line up by the door.
6. I will dismiss the class and they will leave in a quiet orderly manner.
7. Students arriving late will sign in and get back graded work during the clean up time.
