1)

Good morning everyone

My name is DAO VAN QUAN from Changwon National University Korea

Today I would like to present about my research paper A novel control scheme of
a 300 kW class HTS DC induction furnace for the uniform temperature distribution in
aluminum billets
2)

This is the contents of my talk

It starts from introduction

Next, Mathematical models of thermal process will be presented
And then I will present about Control scheme and the results and conclude my
presentation
3) Nowadays, in aluminum extrusion industries, induction heating
widely used for preheating the billet, the efficiency is only about 50
60% with commercial induction furnace
4)
One of the solutions for improving energy efficiency and heating
quality is the DC induction heating method using HTS magnets.
This technology with the heating systems energy efficiency of over 8090% can replace the conventional furnace.
Compare with commercial induction furnace in industries, it has the
advantages such as no loss occurs on HTS coils,
No problems with power system quality and the temperature deviation
inside to the billet can be controlled by the rotating speed
5)
The uniform temperature distribution in the billet is one of the
important factors for the best qualified products.
The heating quality is related to the heat penetration depth and
depends upon the material properties and the operating conditions.
Thus, we can control the rotating speed of the billet to minimize the
temperature deviation
6) Based on the design specifications, a FEM simulation model was
built for analyzing the heating characteristics of the billet
As well as building the mathematical models for heating process.

7) In order to simplify the analysis of the heating characteristics of

billet, I developed a calculating method for temperature profile in the
billet
In this method, The billet is divided to 2 parts, surface and center
layer, the temperature in each parts is constant
I assuming that no loss occurs during the heating process, the heating
energy totally concentrates on the surface layer
This is flow chart for calculating the thermal process
We need to build mathematical models for material properties of the
metal billet, the heating power, the conductive heat transfer and
temperature distribution in the billet

We need to build mathematical models for material properties of the
metal billet, the heating power, the conductive heat transfer and
temperature distribution in the billet
9)
Firstly, I will talk about how to make mathematical model for
heating power
As you know, heating power depends on variables such as magnetic
flux density, rotating speed, sizes and material properties of the billet
Through FEM simulation results, I have the relationships between the
heating power with these variables
10) In case of dependent variables are constant, the heating power
varies with resistivity as well as the temperature of the billet
Using FEM analysis result, I built an approximated equation for the
heating power according to resistivity

And then combine with the relationships proposed becomes a heating

power equation according to the variables like that.
11) Surface layer is heated up by heating power, center layer is heated
by conductive heating transfer for the surface layer
This energy can be calculated by this equation
12) After calculating heating energy in each layer, we will calculate
temperature rise and temperature deviation in the billet using these
equations
Also, we can calculate temperature in each layer and the heating time
13) With the same parameters, I compared calculation results with
FEM analysis results for heating characteristics
There is a discrepancy between the two results, but it can be accepted.
With a large-scale model of HTS DC IF, FEM simulation analysis for
heating process is complicated
and time-consuming. Thus, we can use this calculation method to
analyze heating process.
14) In this control scheme, the rotating speed was controlled to the
uniform temperature distribution in the billet and minimize the heating
time
Speed control range is from 200 rpm 600 rpm, the heating power
does not exceed the total power capacity of induction motors at 500
kW
Heating process will stop when temperature deviation is below

10

15) In order to obtain surface to center temperature uniform in the

billet, the simplest method is cutting of the heating power at an
appropriate time with rotating speed is constant
16)
In this control scheme, the rotating speed of the billet was
controlled at various stage, so that it is constant at each stage. The
temperature distribution is uniform after the completion of the heating
process.
17) In this case, when the heating power was up to 500 kW, the
rotating speed was reduced slowly so that the heating power was

constant. And then it was reduced to 200 rpm to minimize the

temperature deviation after the surface temperature reached 500
.

At the end of heating process, the temperature distribution was

uniform and the heating time significantly reduced compared to the
methods before
18) In order to see clearly, I have the detailed results of three control
scheme
You can see, both of them, the temperature distribution in the billet
was achieved as the heating targets
But he control scheme 3 is the most effective due to the heating time
was most minimized.
Also you can see detailed the stages of the control scheme 3 in this
table

19) This video shows the results for the temperature distribution in
the billet during heating process
20) In this paper, a new calculation method was built to analyze the
heating process and an effective control scheme was developed for
uniform temperature distribution in the aluminum billet of a 300 kWclass HTS DC IF
The rotating speed of the billet was controlled to minimize the heating
time and provide the uniform temperature distribution.
The analysis results demonstrated that the temperature distribution in
the billet was achieved as the heating targets
The study results are expected to be useful for the effective operation
of a commercial HTS DC IF in the future .
