UNIT 1: ACQUAINTING WITH NATURE

Lesson 1Present information in Note form Using
Information Maps and Outlines

An
ecosystem
is
a
community of living organisms
(plants, animals and microbes)
in conjunction with the nonliving
components
of
their
environment (things like air,
water
and
mineral
soil),
interacting as a system
Within each ecosystem,
there are habitats which may
also vary in size. A habitat is the
place where a population lives.
A population is a group of living
organisms of the same kind
living in the same place at the
same
time.
All
of
the
populations interact and form a
community. The community of
living things interacts with the
non-living world around it to
form the ecosystem. The habitat
must supply the needs of
organisms, such as food, water,
temperature,
oxygen,
and
minerals. If the population's
needs are not met, it will move
to
a
better
habitat.
Two
different
populations
cannot
occupy the same niche at the
same time, however. So the
processes
of
competition,
predation,
cooperation,
and
symbiosis occur.
In this lesson, you will
learn
not
only
about
our
ecosystem but also how to

Now, its time to read and know more about our

ecosystem. As you read the text, fill in the graphic
organizer that follows. Enjoy!

THE ECOSYSTEM
The degradation of our environment made evident by denuded
forests, dying rivers and lakes, and a polluted atmosphere, has led to
environmental science or ecology. Ecology is the branch of science
which deals with the interrelationships of living and non-living things.
Ecologists are generally classified as biologists and their work
includes geology, physics, chemistry, and even sociology.
Ecologists study the environment based on the ecosystem. An
ecosystem is an interacting unit or system consisting of groups of
organisms and their non-living or physical environment. The living
organismsplants, animals, protistsare referred to as biotic
components. The non-living portions or abiotic components include
water, carbon dioxide, soil and physical factors such as wind and
temperature.
Every ecosystem needs energy which generally comes
from the sun. This energy is used by producers whose function is to
make energy-rich compounds through the process of photosynthesis.
Producers are mainly green plants which contain chlorophyll
necessary for photosynthesis. Thus, algae, trees, and grass are
producers.
Organisms which are self-feeding are autotrophic while
organisms which feed on the others are heterotrophic. Consumers are
heterotrophic because they feed on producers. Plant eating animals
or herbivores such as cows, rabbits, and grasshoppers are called
primary consumers. Secondary consumers which are also called firstorder carnivores are those that eat herbivores such as snakes, foxes,
and insect-eating birds. They still derive their energy, though
indirectly, from producers. Tertiary consumers or second-order
carnivores such as hawks and wild cats eat secondary consumers.
At the end of the food chain are the decomposers. These
organisms feed on decaying tissues of producers and consumers or
their organic wastes. In the process of feeding, they release nutrients

Wait a minute! It seems you had difficulty in
outlining the selection. Read this and remember.

More than any other form of note taking is outlining.

Outlining is basically a system of arranging concepts or ideas according to their
level of importance. It makes use of numbers and letters with indented entries to show
important headings and the details that immediately go with them.
Grant (1993) recommended outlining into a study procedure through the use of
SCROLsurvey, connect, read, outline, and look back. The procedure contains the
following steps:
1. Survey the headings. Look at the headings and subheadings and determine
what you already know about the topic then predict what information the author
might present.
2. Connect. When you have finished reading all the headings and subheadings,
look at the overall organization and determine how the topics relate to one
another. Construct a skeletal outline of the headings and subheadings by writing
down keywords.
3. Read the text. Read the text section by section. Use the headings and
subheadings to identify important ideas related to the section. Highlight important
ideas and details.
4. Outline. On the skeletal outline you created in step 1, fill in major ideas and
supporting details. try to write the heading and fill in the ideas and details without
looking back at the text.
5. Look back. Now use the text to check your accuracy. Correct any errors.
Types of Outline:
1. Topic Outline. A topic outline uses words or phrases to arrange ideas
systematically.
2. Sentence Outline. A sentence outline is actually composed of topic sentences of
a long passage. As such, it is more elaborate and longer than the topic outline.
3. Paragraph Outline. A paragraph outline consists of groups of sentences
indicating the contents of entire paragraphs. Unlike the two, the paragraph
outline does not include headings or subheadings; instead, the topics of the
paragraphs are presented according to their order in the source text.

Now you learned some techniques on outlining, lets trying

working again!

ACTIVITY 6

11

The reading selection discusses the components of an ecosystem. Read

the following selection. Then complete the diagram that follows and compare
notes with your seatmate.
INTERACTIONS IN THE LIVING WORLD
1. Every organism whether plant or animal, needs certain things in order
to live. Some of these things such as air, sunlight, and water are produced by the
environment in which the organism lives.
2. The study of the different ways by which organisms interact with other
organisms and with their environment is called ecology. This interaction of all
living and non-living things in a given area is called ecological system or
ecosystem.
3. Ecosystem includes all the living things on earth. It also includes the
whole non-living surroundings called environment where living things interact.
4. The non-living environment consists of inorganic substances such as
carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, water, carbon dioxide, and other gases, and organic
compounds taken from living organisms such as proteins, carbohydrates, and
others. These substances in an ecosystem regulate the work of the whole
system.
5. Physical factors such as temperature, wind, light, and rain is another
component of the ecosystem. They affect all the processes in an ecosystem.
6. Living things play different roles in an ecosystem. Some are able to
produce their own food from simple substances in the environment. They are
called producers. Only green plants are able to manufacture food from simple
substances by using energy from the sun. The process is known as
photosynthesis.
7. Other living things are not able to produce their own food. They must
depend upon other living things for food. These living things are called
consumers. Consumers obtain their energy form green plants, the flesh of
animals or the remains of dead organisms. Sometimes it is helpful to think about
consumers according to the food they eat. Some animals which feed on plant
such as cows and sheep are called herbivores. Since plants are the food
sources, herbivores are also called primary consumers. Animals that feed on
other animals are called carnivores. But these carnivores that eat herbivores are
called consumers. Carnivores that feed on other carnivores are called tertiary
consumers.

12

8. As an omnivore, or an animal that feeds on both plants and animals,

belong to all three groups of consumers. You are a primary consumer (herbivore)
when you eat kangkong. You are a secondary consumer when you eat beef. But
you are a tertiary consumer when you eat fish, such as tuna, that eat other fish.
9. Another component of the ecosystem is composed of the decomposers
such as bacteria and fungi. Decomposers break down the tissues and excretions
of other organisms. Bacteria break down the flesh of dead animals. Fungi break
down plant material. They enable chemical substances to return to the physical
environment.

Lesson 3Construct Informal Compositions

Together, lets read the story on how the Earth was
created. Ready?

Earth was perfectly created- the day and night, the skies above our planet,
the mountains, oceans and rivers, the animals and man. The Book of Genesis
speaks about how God has done The Creation.

27
om

In

this planet, lives are interrelated, as humans are created by God in order to
accomplish the task of stewardship over dominion things.
However, as humans go with to the inevitable changes on Earth, our
priorities gradually shift and only the few care of accomplishing the task given to
us. Now, lets have a comparison the changes that happened in our planet
through these before & after photos.

28

Well, its nice that you were able to recognize the changes in our planet.
Now, youre going to watch an animated video about global warming and climate
change.

Climate change is any substantial change in Earths climate

that lasts for an extended period of time. (New Orleans Mission)
Greenhouse gas is any gaseous compound in the
atmosphere that is capable of absorbing infrared radiation, thereby
trapping and holding heat in the atmosphere. (livescience.com)
