“Success is not an accident, but a planned process”
PT now with the unique TDpro engine!

To deliver consistently high levels of quality in everything we do, our people have distilled years of wisdom
and understanding into a unique TDPro engine.

What is this TDPro engine? It stands for Technology Driven Process engine. It is the whole structure of PT – the systematic docu-
mentation and implementation of every single process we follow in all that we do.
Be it course design, course delivery, centre infrastructure, faculty selection, faculty training, website content updation,
students resources management, HR operations, marketing seminars, materials management, IPR control and management, or centre
administration — TDpro engine is geared to add value to all of them.

Worldwide, companies use the Six-sigma quality system to generate and maintain stringent standards. In India, companies like Infosys
and Wipro benchmark themselves against the PCMM levels.
Starting January 2007, at PT, we will now benchmark ourselves against the TDPro engine’s high standards in everything
we do.
This does not mean that we are perfect, but it surely means that we are serious about getting there using modern management tools
of strict operations management, with a human face.

What does this really mean to a student? This simply means that a student and his/her parents can be sure that the commitments and
course delivery at all PT centres will be almost identical in their high quality, as the faculty and staff have undergone standardized
training and are using standard processes, systems and materials. This implies that as an institute, we are completely transparent
(everything is documented on paper), maintain uniform standards, and are serious about students’ success.

We are sure that not many institutes will measure upto this standard of transparency, standardisation and process orientation. This is
our way of saying “Students’ success is the only reason for our existence!”

Move with confidence - Get the TDpro engine advantage!

Students success... Kar Ke Dikhayenge!

Success is a state of mind.

We become what we dream to become, we achieve what we hope to achieve, and we create what we envision in our minds first.
Unfortunately, if we are not cautious, we will often be constrained by the devils of our own creation. We imagine weaknesses that are
debilitating, paralyzing and often totally devastating for our morale. And worst of all, we allow them to take over our self-confidence.
Thus we start thinking like losers, and eventually become losers.

So, it stands to reason that to achieve success, we must train our minds to think like winners. We must consciously tell ourselves
that we are capable and we will do it. “What one man does, another can do too,” must be drilled in our consciousness.

And to practically do this on a day-to-day basis, PT offers a magic mantra to one and all: KAR KE DIKHAYENGE!

Kar ke dikhayenge is a Hindi phrase, which literally translated, means 'we will do it for sure.' Chant this, sing this, think of it, tell this
to yourself, shout it aloud, read it… whichever way you look at it, Kar ke dikhayenge will propel you to new levels of conscious
churning.

It will force you to break the chains that tether you. It will force you to move forward… to succeed, to live happily, to achieve
what you have always wanted to achieve.

Kar Ke Dikhayenge! Kar Ke Dikhayenge! Kar Ke Dikhayenge!

Pinnacle - The MBA entrance course
Make it happen
Dear student,

My friend is that very ordinary, everyday kind of guy

you are never likely to see in a Nike advertisement. He
got into long-distance running in college. He was always
at the receiving end of pranks and jokes and someone
teased him that he wouldn't last half a lap around the
college ground. He quietly replied that he would do 10
From the Founder Chairman

rounds. “Chal, kar ke dikha!” To everyone's amazement,

he did and survived. That was the beginning of the mara-
thon man in our midst.

So I asked him after a recent marathon, how he managed

to do it time after time. Didn't he feel like giving it up
after a couple of gruelling kilometres? Why not follow
many others and go home after a few minutes of jogging-deteriorating-into-walking? “Basically, I chal-
lenge myself. When I am running I am constantly telling myself that yes, I can do this next kilometre and
it goes on. That's all. Anyone can do it.” Like all great winners he made it sound so simple.

You are at the start of your own marathon. Far away, after many gruelling days, lies your finishing line
– your MBA qualification. So what do you plan to do? Be happy with the marathon T-shirt and give up
after a couple of kilometers? Or are you too determined to kar ke dikhayenge?

That's our mantra at PT – kar ke dikhayenge. We must confess that motto was inspired by some of our
brilliant students. Like the four who topped CAT in 2006! And so too, members from the illustrious list of
hundreds whom we had the pride and pleasure to help last the distance and breast the tape with honour.
We are now happy to have the opportunity to help you win your own marathon.

Here at PT, we like to think of ourselves as enablers. After years of analysis and experience you may want
to believe that we understand what it takes. Perhaps! But at PT we run a different kind of marathon. We
add another kilometre every now and then and keep pushing the finishing line. There is always a better
way, we believe. And that conviction is what has kept us the best in the field for so many years.

We also give you the advantage of our TDpro Engine – technology-driven process engine. TDpro Engine
ensures that every single process – course design, course delivery, centre infrastructure, faculty selec-
tion, faculty training, website content updating, students resources management, HR operations, mar-
keting seminars, materials management, IPR control and management, centre administration, etc. – is
scientifically documented and controlled to give you – the user – the best advantage.

The marathon you are set for requires discipline and perseverance. It is as demanding as it is rewarding.
Your determination and hard work can change the course of your life. We at PT will be happy to provide
you the right launching pad.

Yes, we will help you make it happen! Hum kar ke dikhayenge!

On your marks, get set, go … and keep going! We are with you.

MBA is not a "one size fits all" option. Depending on your ability and aptitude you can pick a specilisation that is right for you. Take
a look at some of the specialisations

3. Human resources management 4. Systems
5. Production management 6. Operations management
7. Advertising and public relations 8. Materials management

Finance

Specialisations Available
This is a career for people with good quantitative skills, who would like to engage in planning, resource
management and policy formulation.
"Number crunching" is how most people would describe a career in finance. It is all about how best to manage money. MBAs in this
discipline face competition from chartered accountants (CAs), but learn a lot more than what a conventional CA programme
offers. Thus, in the medium term, an equally bright MBA would have an advantage over his CA colleague, especially because of
the overall organisational aspects covered in the MBA course. There are several options to further specialise in this discipline:

1. Consumer banking 2. Investment banking

3. Institutional banking 4. Merchant banking
5. Development banking 6. Non-banking finance
7. Corporate finance 8. Treasury management

Banking is the life of an economy. After the opening up of the economy, the banking function has become even more important
than ever before. Banks have direct access to the savings of individuals and channelise these savings into the mainstream of the
economy.

Post-liberalisation, the environment in which the banks operate has undergone a sea change. Banks, especially public sector
banks, have woken up to the fact that unless they act fast and become market savvy, they may lose out to foreign banks, which
have international expertise, and to private Indian banks which are doing extremely well on the customer service front. This is
the main reason why public sector banks have become aggressive in areas like credit cards, e-banking etc.

These developments make banking a very interesting field. The nature of work in a bank is such that it offers openings not
only to people with traditional finance-oriented skills like an MBA or a CA, but also to those who are technologists, environmental
engineers and agriculturists.

Consumer banking, investment banking and institutional banking are usually undertaken by the same organisation. These
cover individual accounts, the management of securities (and other investments including foreign exchange dealings) and lending
to corporate clients. A host of Indian and foreign banks are engaged in all these activities.

Most banks also have merchant banking subsidiaries or divisions. These focus on public issues of capital by organisations.
While Indian banks are currently rated as the best in merchant banking, foreign banks excel in consumer, investment and
institutional banking.

Development banking falls under the purview of specialised institutions set up for this purpose, like ICICI, IDBI, IFCI etc. The
mandate is to help the economy grow by aiding industrial growth. The focus here is very different from traditional banking and
the field is extremely challenging. Even these institutions have been registering their presence on premier campuses during the
placement season.

Non-banking finance is available from two types of institutions. There are private banks or small privately-run specialised
companies including those involved in leasing and hire purchase. Then there are specialised public sector institutions concentrating
on shipping finance, housing finance, venture capital etc.

Marketing

Marketing is a discipline that is quite popular with management graduates. People with good communication
skills and leadership qualities, and those raring to go places generally find it extremely interesting. A career in
marketing has a lot to offer in terms of responsibility, challenge, innovation and growth.
Marketing in its broadest sense is getting people and products together. This discipline offers opportunities to specialise in:

1. Sales and distribution 2. Product management

3. Advertising and public relations 4. Market research
5. Media planning 6. Brand management
Specialisations Available

The opportunities in sales and product management are many. However most organisations prefer their trainees to get sales
experience before joining product management.

Advertising and market research are service sector activities. These are usually handled by specialised consultancies. In
India, we have several small advertising agencies. These may not be the best place to start a career if one desires global
exposure. There are also several large agencies, often with foreign collaborations (in fact, most Indian advertising majors are
witnessing tie-ups or mergers, willingly or unwillingly). Most large and professional market research agencies are divisions or
subsidiaries of advertising agencies.

Media planning includes activities like media buying. Specialised courses on media planning are available at a few institutions.

Philip Kotler defines a brand as a name, term, sign, symbol or design or a combination of these, intended to identify the goods
or services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of competitors. Branding essentially gives a
personality to a product. A brand conveys the attributes, benefits, values, culture and the personality of the products or
services offered. Brand management has acquired such importance as a part of the marketing function that it is being offered as
a specialised course in some institutes. The courses cover details like the theoretical role of pricing in brand management, product
innovation and development, packaging and product portfolio management, role of promotional tools such as advertising, PR etc.
Finally, there is also the role of distribution and the physical availability of the product.

Human Resources Management

If you can manage your people well, they in turn, will take good care of your organisation.
Human resources has become the most important specialisation in management in recent years. This is probably the fastest
growing specialisation in India today. There are three important fields of study in this area.

1. Human resources development (HRD)

2. Personnel relations
3. Industrial relations

An HRD executive handles activities like performance appraisal, employee counselling, employee training and employee
motivation. These activities are directed towards the development of the people in the organisation.

A personnel executive’s focus is different. He is involved in normal day-to-day activities like recruitment, job definition,
salary management and employee welfare.

Industrial relations focuses on labour management. With the increasing labour activism, often with the backing of political
parties, organisations need specialists to handle union related activities. Normally, students who have a law background are
preferred for this functional area.

Systems

For those who have a flair for both management and computers, the best career option is an MBA in systems.

Over the past one decade, the IT Industry, popularly referred to as "infotech" or "software", has astonished people most in
terms of growth. Yes, there has been a major shakeout over the past few months, but experts predict a revival.

Computers are already becoming a part and parcel of all human endeavours and a career in computers holds unmatched
promise, potential and limitless scope for innovation.

India and Indians are right in front of the global software industry. With the introduction of reforms in 1991, the entire

Specialisations Available
infotech market has witnessed a quantum leap in profit-growth. This has led to the creation of plenty of job opportunities for
individuals with IT skills. Generally most organisations seek graduates who have a flair for both management and computers.

For MBAs who specialise in systems, there are four broad career options. They can opt for organisations that are involved in:

1. Computer manufacturing and selling

2. Systems consultancy
3. Systems management
4. E-Commerce

A very common question often asked is " What is the difference between a computer guy and a systems guy? " The key
difference is in the type of skills needed. While a systems specialist will work on understanding a problem and then resolving it,
the focus of the computer specialist is narrower and more technical. The computer specialist will know about software and
hardware of certain types. However, the MBA student, in the course of his programme, will have learnt about all the functions of
an organisation, in addition to software and hardware. Hence, a systems MBA, unlike a computer engineer, is equipped to design
systems for many types of organisations.

One doesn’t need prior experience in computers or engineering to specialise in systems. However, in smaller institutes, this
might be desirable for placement.

A major boom in the next five years is expected in the field of Internet-related electronic commerce. In fact, most of the IT
majors are concentrating on this area as it promises one of the highest growth rates because of the fact that India still has one
of the lowest per capita PC penetration. Once the boom starts, experts predict it would be mind boggling. In fact, several
enterprising young people have already started companies that are dabbling in e-commerce.

Production

This specialisation is generally preferred by engineers and it is the right choice for those with an inclination
for production or shopfloor management.
Manufacturing is one of the most important economic activities. Many techniques and theories have been developed by
management schools which focus on issues relevant to the area. The opportunities in this field are in:

1. Productivity improvement
2. Quality control
3. Inventory control
4. Production planning

The focus of the production specialist is not on engineering problems, but on the managerial implications of engineering
problems. The specific skills required are behavioural, technical and statistical.

MBAs with this background stand a bright chance with several consultancy firms, in addition to manufacturing organisations.

Operations

An operations person basically deals with the various internal and external movements and flows within an
organisation that affect its efficiency. These flows could be processes, relationships, vendor development,
ancillary management etc.

This is a new stream that has come to the fore in recent years and is fast gaining popularity. People who specialise in
operations are basically inter-disciplinary in nature. The responsibilities are huge and so are the returns. The market has
welcomed this specialisation with open arms.

Advertising
Specialisations Available

People with a creative bend of mind are fit for this career.

The very word "advertising" conjures up an image of a highly creative career where you can actually generate ideas and see
them taking shape. Advertising has grown leaps and bounds in importance for any organisation. Earlier the perception was that
advertising means marketing or just one part of marketing. In the days of yore, the direct interface with the customer was
through marketing. When the marketing arm of the organisation had to sell a product, they had to communicate to the customer
the four Ps of the product viz. product, price, performance and place of availability. This communication was executed through
advertising.

Today, advertising is an important part of not only marketing but the overall business strategy. In the current scenario, the
entire organisation has to focus on the customer and to communicate with her. The level to which advertising has made inroads
into business strategy is borne out by the fact that many products are developed keeping advertising in mind.

This naturally presents a very large canvas for an advertising professional. Advertising is broadly divided into four areas:
1. Client servicing
2. Media
3. Account planning
4. Copywriting.

One can enter advertising either through campus placements or through direct application to advertising agencies. Details of
various advertising agencies can be had from advertisement bodies, newspaper offices or magazines like A&M. A fresh MBA is
usually taken in as a management trainee. Since they have a business orientation, MBAs are generally put into client servicing
and media initially. Later on, depending on the individual's creative inclination, he can also move into account planning and
copywriting. Advertising companies welcome MBAs in these fields as it helps them carry out creative work in a professional
manner.

Today, new areas are emerging within advertising. For example, event management involves organisation and marketing of
events. Image management helps to project a particular image of an individual or an organisation. Internet marketing has also
brought about a lot of changes in advertising as the needs of the Web are different. Here, MBAs find instant favour as they can
put their business inputs to good use.

Many agencies in India prefer people with specialisation in advertising. The best place for a qualification in advertising is the
Mudra Institute of Communications (MICA). Also, there are a lot of other courses that are offered by various institutions, like
MASSCOM and MAPRM.

Materials Management

Materials management covers all functions required for managing the raw materials right from the time they leave the
premises of the suppliers, till such time the materials get converted into finished products. A career in materials management is
becoming more challenging with each passing day. New philosophies such as JIT, Kaizen and Kanban have had a tremendous
impact on the profession. Technological advances engendered by the quality revolution and by the Internet have influenced the
profession heavily, making it more dynamic than ever.

International Business

This specialisation has seen an unprecedented boom after the Indian government embraced globalisation. The best place
offering this course in India is IIFT. A career in international business holds a lot of potential. Several people had once opined
that the East Asian meltdown and the global recession would spell doom for international business. However, with export-
oriented economies bouncing back with renewed vigour, there are now more opportunities in international business than ever
before.

Telecom Management

India is among the few countries, which have realised the contribution of telecom and IT to economic growth. Further, the

Specialisations Available
country is now shifting its focus from the traditional manufacturing industries to emerging knowledge-based industries. The
technological convergence (being the basic reason of digitisation) has brought the two industries together. This convergence is
happening not only in the technological but also in the regulatory environment. There is a great demand for professionals in
telecom management and opportunities abound all over the world.

Entrepreneurship

The joy of creation knows no bounds, especially if it is wealth creation. Today we are seeing a different pedigree of B-School
graduates. These people are now moving away from seeking wealth in the form of salaries and are moving towards wealth
creation by setting up new ventures. Also the change in the environment has made it relatively easier today. Finance is easily
available in the form of venture funding. People are willing to take chances by joining start-up companies. With the advent of
better technology, it has never been easier to convert ideas into reality. So, if you dream to be a part of the elite global club of
daredevil individuals like Konosuka Matsushita, Akio Morita, Raymond Kroc and Warren Buffet, take the plunge into
entrepreneurship.

Attention!
Please note that the eligibility criteria for CAT 2006 onwards was a minimum of 50%
marks in graduation. Students in the final year of graduation were also eligible to appear
for CAT. But such students were reuqired to show that they had obtained a minimum of
50% marks in exams for which the results have been declared till now.

The official notification for CAT 2007 is expected in July second week.

Note : The eligibility criteria for this year or coming year(s) may change. You are
requested to check the CAT bulletin when it is released.

Eligibility, Application Procedure and
Selection Procedure
Eligibility, Application Procedure and Selection Procedure

Eligibility

Most B-schools ask for a bachelor's degree or equivalent with minimum 50 percent marks (45 percent for SC/ST candidates) in any
faculty. Students appearing in the final year of graduation may also apply. Students must always check the exact criteria of
eligibility before applying.

For the Fellow Programme, the objective of which is to develop understanding teachers and researchers, the applicant must have
at least a second class master’s degree in any field. Candidates with a first class bachelor’s degree in engineering and technology
and work experience of at least 2 years, are also eligible.

In all cases, candidates appearing for their degree examination in the current academic year, are eligible to appear for the
entrance test.

Application Procedure

You can apply to the institutes after their advertisements appear. Most major institutes release advertisements for applications
in the national dailies from July onwards. Generally the first advertisement seen in the newspapers is for CAT (Common Admission
Test). Here at PT, copies of all the advertisements released are put on the website. Once you have the advertisement, apply
immediately. All institutes have a last date for issuing and accepting forms. For most of the institutes, forms are available in
various banks (CAT forms, for example, are being sold at specified branches of State Bank of India). Thus, in most of the cases,
you can get the admission form-cum-prospectus in your city itself. But at times, a few institutes require that a separate Demand
Draft be sent along with self-addressed envelopes. Under both these cases, it is advised that the students get or apply for the
forms on the very first day from which the forms are available. Delay may result in disappointment. It is quite possible that there
would be a single entrance exam for all the colleges this year onwards.

Here is a step-wise approach towards the application procedure:

1. As soon as the advertisements of the management institutes start appearing in the national dailies, we, at PT, will compile
these advertisements and put them on the website.

2. Apply to the different colleges as per the advertisements and procure the relevant forms.

3. Get these forms photocopied and fill these copies. Then get them checked by us. Only after we (at the office) approve it,
should you fill the actual form.

4. Apply to as many colleges as possible. Remember, you are strongly advised to keep your options open till the end. Do
not eliminate your options without serious thought. Do not be over-confident either. Even the selection of a good student
is not 100% certain. Hence, don’t take unnecessary risk. Later on, you may have to repent.

5. At any step, if you have any questions about the process, contact us as soon as possible.

6. Plan your finances properly right from the start.

7. Keep photocopies of all DDs etc. that you send to these institutes.

8. Keep a check on the last dates of filling up of forms etc.

9. Appear for different tests.

10. Keep PT informed of your performance in these tests so we can suggest something concrete regarding the personality
assessment stage.

11. Appear for personality assessment tests.

12. Stay in touch constantly to ensure best and focussed guidance.

Eligibility, Application Procedure and Selection Procedure

Selection Procedure
Selection

Selection to the B-Schools in India is generally a two-stage procedure. At times, a few other institutes may also include some
other stages. In most of the cases, the two stages are (A) Written Test, followed by (B) Personality Assessment Test.

Ultimately, the institutes have to ascertain that they get the best from amongst those who have applied. Given the large number
of applicants, the institutes eliminate students at each stage to arrive at the final list of candidates. After the test, a call letter
is sent to those candidates who have the highest scores (results are also available on the Internet). A student who clears the
first round, the written test, will receive a call for personality assessment test. Once through the second stage, the students
receive the final offer for admission to the institute.

Aptitude Test Basics

An aptitude test is basically a test of your intelligence, common sense, IQ and your ability to apply your understanding
judiciously in a limited time situation. Thus, it is not a test of your knowledge, but how well you understand and interpret that
knowledge. Basically, the skills that are tested are quantitative and linguistic. You cannot cram up things and write the answers
verbatim in an aptitude test. It may so happen that a university topper may not score well at all in an aptitude test whereas an
aptitude test topper may not be a university topper. Please understand the difference very carefully.

Selection Procedure

Selection to the B-schools in India is generally a two-stage procedure.

• Stage I: Written test
• Stage II: Personality assessment

The institutes ensure that they get the best from those who apply. Given the large number of applicants, the institutes
eliminate students at each stage to arrive at the final list of candidates. After the written test, a call letter is sent to those
candidates who achieve the desired cut-off scores. Final selection depends on the total points a student scores on the basis of
parameters like (a) Past academic record, (b) Written test scores (c) Personality assessment score (d) Extra-curricular background,

Aptitude Test Basics

and (e) Work experience. The selection procedure may vary from institute to institute.

The entrance tests for all B-Schools are generally between November and March. The most prestigious and, ostensibly, the
most challenging of these tests is the CAT (Common Admission Test) of the IIMs.

CAT is the mother of all MBA entrance tests in India. Over the past 10 years, CAT has been increasingly accepted as the
benchmark test by several institutes. At present, CAT is the entrance test for:

1. The six IIMs

2. MICA, Ahmedabad
3. T.A.Pai Management Institute, Manipal
4. Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon
5. International Management Institute (IMI), Delhi
6. NIRMA Institute of Management (NIRMA), Ahmedabad
7. Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Calcutta
8. Institute of Management Development and Research (IMDR), Pune
9. S.P.Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai
10. University Business School, Punjab University, Chandigarh
11. NITIE, Mumbai,
12. Department of Management Studies, Goa University, Goa
13. Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal
14. Faculty of Management Studies, BHU, Varanasi
15. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow
16. Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies, Harihar, Karnataka
17. Institute of Technology and Management, Mumbai
18. Amrita Institute of Management, Coimbatore
19. Fore School of Management, Delhi
20. Entrepreneurship and Management Process International (EMPI) Business School, Delhi
21. Institute of Public Enterprises, Hyderabad
22. Institute of Technology and Sciences, Ghaziabad

Please note that this is not a complete list.

Other prestigious colleges conduct their seperate tests. A few of the tests conducted last year were JMET for admission to
IITs, IBSAT for ICFAI Business School, XAT for XLRI, XIM-B etc., FMS, NMAT for NMIMS, SNAT for Symbiosis group of institutes,
IIFT, IRMA etc.

IMPORTANT : These days, there is a trend towards centralised testing for management institutes. For example, CAT is becoming
the test for more and more colleges. Similarly, for all the colleges in M.P., MCMJET (MP and Chhatisgarh Management Joint
Entrance Test) is conducted. For colleges in UP, UPMCAT is conducted. RMAT is the exam for the colleges in Rajasthan. For most
of the colleges in Maharashtra, CET (Common Entrance Test) is held.

Aptitude Test Basics

From the above discussion, we can conclude that:

(a) It makes great sense to prepare for CAT as it covers many good colleges.
(b) Your preparation has to be based on the test you plan to take – however, CAT must be the first thing on your mind to
prepare effectively.
(c) If you prepare for CAT, which is the stiffest ordeal, you prepare for most or all of the other tests automatically.

Aptitude Test Basics

These are not technical tests. They do not test your knowledge. Rather, these test your intelligence, common sense, IQ and
your ability to apply your knowledge judiciously in a limited-time situation. Aptitude tests assess your quantitative, reasoning and
linguistic skills.

Most of the tests follow similar patterns. Although unique elements do exist in specific tests, the overall flavour remains the
same.
Aptitude Test Basics

Test Areas

Reading comprehension: This consists of different types of passages and questions based on them. The passages are
usually extracted from standard newspapers, magazines and general literature.

Verbal ability and English usage: This tests your understanding of the English language. Typical questions comprise
synonym-antonym relations, sentence sequencing, sentence correction, fill-in-the-blanks, verbal analogies, verbal reasoning
etc.

Quantitative aptitude: This covers topics up to X standard mathematics. The objective questions stress more on the
student's reasoning ability than computational skills.

Data interpretation: This tests your skills in understanding data presented in different forms. These are several sets of
questions having bar graphs, tables, charts, line graphs, etc. and you are expected to deduce the required information from
these.

Logical reasoning: This tests your ability to logically analyse a question or situation and reach a conclusion.

General awareness: This assesses the level of your general awareness. As a future manager, you must be aware of the
environment around you.

Apart from securing the qualifying cut-off score in each of these sections, you are also required to secure more than the
aggregate cut-off score to qualify for the next round of the selection procedure. The time-tested All-India Test Series of PT will
prepare you for any and every test pattern that may come your way. Advanced OMR scanning methods will ensure that your
practice remains relevant.

Facts to remember

X There may or may not be negative marking in the test. You will know about it only after the institutes officially start selling
their prospectus.
X The test duration can be 2 hours, 2.5 hours or 3 hours. Again, the exact duration will be known from the prospectus.
X The MBA entrance test has only one written test paper. There may or may not be different sections in this test paper.

Standard Patterns of Test

X Different sections with time limits for each section. Ex. XAT, NMIMS etc.
X Different sections with no section-wise fixed time limits. Ex. CAT, IIFT, IMT, etc.
X Mixed questions, no sections. Ex. FMS, MFC etc.

More about the entrance tests W

The entrance tests for all the B-schools are generally conducted between November and March. CAT is normally conducted in the
month of November. Immediately after this, a series of institutes start with their tests in the month of December, January and
February.

Almost all these entrance tests (also known as written tests) are objective-type tests and judge the student on his aptitude.
These tests are all fixed time-limit tests, with a pre-defined bonus and a negative marking.

The following are the key areas on which a student is normally tested.

¾ Reading comprehension (RC)

¾ English usage (EU - inclusive of usage, vocabulary,
grammar etc.)
Patterns and Structures

¾ Mathematical aptitude (MA)

¾ Data interpretation (DI)
¾ Data sufficiency (DS)
¾ Logical reasoning (LR)
¾ General knowledge (GK)

A few entrance tests may also have the following additional test areas

¾ Essay writing
¾ Subjective type answers
¾ Higher maths

Skills tested at these entrance tests W

¾ A very sharp focus in life

If you have decided on MBA, there should be no other thing on your mind. Forget UPSC, or Government Jobs or any
other Masters' Degree. The FOCUS is quintessential.
¾ An excellent command over English
MBA entrance tests are conducted in English (of course!) and English as a subject also forms an integral part of the
tests. So, your command over English has to be as good as possible. You need to have a masterly command over
Vocabulary, Comprehension, Grammar, and Usage of the language. And trust us, that is not as difficult as it may sound
to some of you. It can surely be done.
¾ Superb reading skills
Superb reading skills and good comprehension are vital to success and if you don't have them, you are surely in for
some rough times ahead. Wake up ! There is still time to improve. You must aim at a reading speed of 300 – 350 words
Patterns and Structures

per minute (WPM) with at least 80% accurate comprehension.

¾ Reasonably good quantitative and logical skills
One question that is very commonly raised is : What should be the safest score in the Maths and allied sections? The
answer is not simple. It depends on the level of toughness of the paper. BUT one thing is certain; If you dread maths,
it can be your nemesis. This is especially true for non-maths background people. You must have reasonably good maths
also.
¾ Good General Knowledge
Although in several tests, GK is not a separate section, still it is important to develop a strong command over GK. This
is so because in the GDs and Interviews, GK plays a very vital role. GK can be developed over 6 to 7 months by regularly
reading English newspapers and magazines.
¾ Excellent communication skills
After a person gets a call letter from any of the institutes on the basis of his performance in the written test, one has
to appear for group discussions and personal interviews. To compete with the best participants from all across India,
you must have excellent communication skills and loads of confidence in your abilities.
And lastly....
¾ A dogged, tenacious and an unending spirit to go on and on ...

Also it is very important for you to do an analysis of yourself by asking yourself the following questions:
¾ Vocabulary
Can I use good words? How vast is my vocabulary? How good is my colloquial English? Can I pronounce words properly?
Have I ever done any course earlier? Have I studied any book pertaining to vocabulary earlier?
¾ Grammar
Do I know basic definitions? Do I understand parts of speech? Can I construct sentences properly? Can I understand
the tricky part of grammar? Have I ever read grammar carefully? Do I have friends who can point out my mistakes?
¾ Spoken English / Communication
Can I speak in English confidently? Can I stand on the stage & face a crowd confidently? How many hours per day do
I speak in English? Do I have friends who are good at communication? In my college, do I have a good atmosphere of
communication?
¾ General Knowledge
Have I ever (in my life so far) tried to develop GK seriously? What reading habits do I have? What discussions do I have
with my friends regularly? How many hours can I devote per day to develop my General Knowledge?
¾ Reading Habits
So far in my life, have I ever developed reading skills? Do I hate reading as I find it dreadfully boring? Do I have friends
who read a lot? Can I spend money regularly on a national English daily? Can I buy a standard magazine regularly? Can
I devote 3-5 hours daily to read, read & read? Will I like to spend money on books, magazines, novels etc.?
¾ Quantitative Skills
Can I solve basic arithmetic question fast? Do I remember tables? Can I understand graphs etc.? Am I dead scared of
mathematics or Am I generally comfortable with it?

After this analysis, we believe, you must have got an idea as to what needs to be done.

Analysis of Sample Aptitude Test

¾ You must have seen that any aptitude test is a game of how quickly and how smartly you apply the
‘tricks-of-the-trade’, generally referred to as “TEST-SMARTS.” Your regular methods of solving questions
just won't work!

¾ You must have also realised that only with expert guidance can you master the concepts required to crack
the test. In fact, the student feedback that we get every year corroborates the fact that the techniques
that we promote and propound are unmatched and students really have benefited a lot in the past
from our expertise.

¾ For solving quantitative sections, if you follow a conventional approach, the chances are that you will not be
able to crack it the way it is required for an MBA entrance test. Shortcuts and tricks are needed all along
the way.

¾ At PT we give you expert training and all these problems are taken care of by hundreds of short-cut techniques,
time-saving techniques, test-smarts, and so on, so essential for success at an MBA entrance test.

¾ Our track record at MBA entrance proves beyond doubt that the training, skills etc. imparted by PT are the
best you can find anywhere in India.

¾ For taking a test of this kind, you must:

have sufficient mastery over the concepts of English and Maths, generally referred to as verbal
ability and quantitative aptitude respectively.
exercise a lot of common sense and use short-cut techniques wherever you can.
understand that it is essential to use your discretion in selecting the right kind of questions in the
right order with a cool head to give your very best.

¾ At PT we teach a lot of such "clinching" techniques everyday. In the long run, these techniques alone can
make the final difference in your performance.

¾ Only regular classroom training can make you a master of the basic concepts and the strategy required to
crack such tests in a limited-time situation.

A GUIDE TO GROUP DISCUSSIONS

Mention GD and as typical student begins to think: What if I am not able to express myself properly? What is expected of me in
a GD? What if I land up in a very strong group and I do not get a chance to speak? What if I do not know anything about the GD
topic?

Basically, GD is an elimination exercise. This means that they are going to select positive personalities and reject "negative"
personalities. To crack your GD, all you have to do is project a "positive" personality. The most important element of a positive
personality is LEADERSHIP quality. In a GD, the main attributes of a leader are:
1. Talks sense, comes out with original and innovative ideas.
2. A good speaker and a good listener.
3. Is convincing and can back up his arguments with factual evidence.
4. Is not a policeman or a moderator, but gives direction to the GD.

The key to success in a GD is a) Knowledge and b) Practice. Anyone preparing for a GD must have a wide knowledge of GK and
current affairs. The only way you can improve those is by reading as much as possible.

Powerpack Final

DOs AND DON’Ts in a GD

1. Do not express an opinion or take a stand which you cannot back up with factual evidence. Never change your stand or
viewpoint in a GD.
2. Do not panic on hearing the GD topic. Be calm and think clearly about the topic.
3. Never ask anyone else to speak.
4. Do not impose yourself as a leader. That is, do not step into the shoes of a GD moderator.
5. Maintain constant eye contact with everyone in the group and a positive body language. Do not point your finger towards
any o ne.
6. Do not be melodramatic or "filmy" to gather attention. Be sensible and sober.
7. Do not make fun of or mock any participant in any way.
8. Do not mumble. Speak loud and clear.
9. Do not lose your temper. Do not start shouting.
10. Do not look at the examiner at all. You need not prove your point to the examiner. Never object to or question the examiner.
11. Do not excessively praise any participant. Restrict your praises to "point well taken", "good point", etc.
12. Do not be informal. This means do not start using slangs like "yaar".

Powerpack Final
13. Do not waste the time of the group by constantly repeating the same thing.
14. Show that you are carefully listening to everyone. Do not start looking at the ceiling or outside the room, as if you are
thinking deeply.
15. If you are asked to summarise the GD in the end, then only summarise, do not give any conclusion or enforce your view
point.

A GUIDE TO PERSONAL INTERVIEWS

Personal interviews (PI) of various management institutes are normally held immediately after the GDs. These interviews are
conducted by a panel of 2 to 6 interviewers. Some institutes also have a Group Interview, implying that 3 to 4 candidates may be
interviewed simultaneously by a panel.

In contrast to a GD, PI is more personal in nature. Focus shifts from leadership quality to academic knowledge,
personal behaviour and individual presentation.

Broadly one may be quizzed on four basic areas during an interview.

Academic Knowledge
You must have expert knowledge of the subject in which you majored during graduation. You are expected to know much more
than what you may have been actually taught during graduation. For a chemical engineer, if a question on chemistry is asked,
then "I don’t know" or "We were not taught that" are fatal answers.

Extracurricular Activities
One must be able to present his strong interest in at least one or two extracurricular activities. People with a sporting
background have a clear advantage here. Pure bookworms with no hobbies or extra curricular activities may not be welcome.
An important point to note is that if you mention any extracurricular activity then you should have a vast and deep knowledge
of that subject.

Personal Attributes
This is probably the most difficult part to handle in an interview, but the easiest to prepare for. Questions like "Introduce
yourself", "Why management?", "Will you bribe a bureaucrat to get a tender passed for your company?", "What are your
career goals?" and "Where would you be 10 years down the line?" are very general questions but need proper preparation,
because at times unthinkingly, the candidate may fall into a trap.

Current Affairs
Of course, last but not the least, one has to be extremely good with current affairs. You should not only know about a news
item, but also be to understand and analyse it.

Powerpack Final

Some General Interview Tips

X Be smart and formally dressed.

X Sit straight and maintain a positive body language. Keep constant eye contact with all the panel members.
X Be honest. Do not bluff if you do not know the answer.
X Carry a folder of your certificates and other important documents. Please do not keep this folder on your lap during the
interview. Keep it on the floor, or take your panel’s permission to keep it on the table in front of you.
X Be polite. Do not start arguing about your point of view.
X Give precise, to the point and specific answers. Do not make general statements. Back up your answers with facts and
examples.
X Have a good background knowledge about the institute for which the interview is being conducted.

INSTITUTE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Besides the general GD and PI requirements, various institutes have their own unique needs. Here are some examples:
Powerpack Final

IRMA, Anand
A rural angle is added with specific questions like:
z Tell us something about gram swaraj and panchayati raj in India.
z You are a very young and dynamic individual with an excellent academic record. Any MNC would recruit you. Why do you want to
go for rural management? Are you sure about what you are doing?
z Tell us something about the White Revolution. What is Operation Flood? Has it achieved the desired objective?

TISS, Mumbai
TISS offers Masters in Social Work, Hospital Administration, Criminology and PM & IR. Expect a lot of questions on human rights, social
work, factories act, personnel management, NGOs and their work, Gandhian philosophy etc.

IIFM, Bhopal
IIFM, Bhopal offers Masters in Forest Management. Expect questions on ecology, environmental issues, forest cover and environmental
laws. Students with a biology background are asked indepth questions on biology.

IIM, Kolkata

SPJIMR, Mumbai
Normally a group Interview is conducted at SP Jain which is not seen or observed at any other Management Institute.

NITIE, Mumbai
NITIE provides management programme for engineers who do not wish to leave their area of core competence, but still want to be in
management. Hence the interview questions pertain to academics.

SCMHRD, Pune
Human Resources, efficacy of life, business ethics, morals and values play an important role at SCMHRD. Candidate must be able to present
himself as a people-oriented person.

IIFT, Delhi and SIFT, Pune

Interviews at IIFT are considered to be extremely tough because of their bias towards engineers and people with work experience.
Questions asked are from all fields with specific focus on foreign trade.

MFC, Delhi
Like IIM Bangalore, most of the questions asked are technical in nature and pertain to finance, accounts, taxation, banking, etc. The focus
is on practical aspects of finance.

students resources management, HR operations, marketing seminars, materials management, IPR control and management, or centre
administration — TDpro engine is geared to add value to all of them.

About GELS

We are the best

Why we are the best

We say with full confidence and commitment that the seriousness, dedication, systematic approach and punctuality that you will
find in the teaching processes at PT are unparalleled. Ask your seniors for feedback and check this out! They will tell you that no
one cares for students as much as PT does. Your success is our focus, everything else is secondary.

Our theme this year is kar ke dikhayenge! You can do it; you will do it. It applies to us too. We are sure you can do it; we will help
you ensure that you do it.

Let us take a look at the unique PT PLUSES, things that make us very different from the rest.

Our approach

The efficiency of any institute's teaching standards is determined by one thing – its approach. PT values its students and their
success. We realise that the success of our students is the only reason for our existence. And since this is our driving force, we
lay strong emphasis on certain cardinal principles.
We are the best

z We are a teaching organisation and focus on good teaching above everything else.
z Our teachers are professionally trained and ingrained with the right attitude.
z We work, teach and study in an environment of trust, discipline and hard work.
z We strive to fulfil the needs of our students to the best of our capabilities.
z We set high standards and expect the same from our students, too.
z We inform and educate our students about the need for strong self-discipline and self-motivation to achieve their goals.

Dedicated Faculty

PT's teachers are dedicated, trained teaching professionals interested only in YOUR success. All the faculty members are
selected carefully and undergo rigorous training at PT headquarters at Indore, before they work with you to shape your career.
They are trained to inculcate a positive attitude in you even as they spot and sharpen your skills. What you learn at PT will last
you a lifetime – that is our guarantee.

TDpro engine

Technology is all-pervasive today. It has the power to enhance the efficiency of all that we do. And that is the power we tap
through our TDpro engine – Technology Driven process engine.

It applies to the whole structure of PT. It is about systematic documentation and implementation of every single process we follow
in all that we do. Be it course design, course delivery, centre infrastructure, faculty selection, faculty training, website content
updating, students resources management, HR operations, marketing seminars, materials management, IPR control and manage-
ment, or centre administration – TDpro engine is geared to add value to all that we do. This is our new benchmark.

You may wonder why this should concern you as a student. Thanks to TDpro engine, now you can be doubly sure that the
commitments and course delivery at all PT Centres will be identical in terms of style and substance as the faculty and staff have
undergone standardised training and are using standard processes, systems and materials. This implies that as an institute, we
are completely transparent (everything is documented), maintain uniform standards and are serious about your success.

Personal Counselling Sessions (PCS)

These are one-to-one mentoring, goal setting, stress management and score maximisation sessions for all students. This is a
unique plus that only PT offers. Your mentor will help you fine-tune your performance, identify and leverage your strengths and
eliminate your weaknesses. The PCS help you plan your preparation scientifically and to reduce stress. Imagine … fierce compe-
tition in class and personalised training! That is like getting the best of both worlds!
