Experimental Design Diagram Name: CARLY JOHNSON HR: 7th

A. How far will the rocket launch with a certain height size of fins?
B. If we make the fins smaller then the rocket will not launch as far because it is heavy
and the fins don't give enough support to go far.
C. TABLE

The length traveled depends on height size of fins

Height and Length traveled (meters) Average length
length of fins traveled (meters)
(H,L) (cm)
Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3
7,8 0 4 1 3
9,8 8 13 7 9.33
10,8 29 31 19 26.33
12,8 54 40 42 45.33

D. CONTROL ROCKET: RESULTS: 81 m. 67 m. 70 m.

-Bottle size (2 liter, 20 oz)
-Same launching angle
-Same water amount in bottles (100 mL) in top and 1000 in bottom
-Amount of fins (4) & length of fins (6 X 4)
-Same kind of materials (cardboard fins, duct tape..etc.) & cap on
E. WHAT WE NEED:
*One 2 Liter pop bottle
*One 20 fluid oz water bottle
*Cardboard
*Duct tape
*Water
*Launching set up
*Meter stick
F. 1. Take 2 liter pop bottle and fill with 1000 mL of water, take 20 oz bottle and fill with 100
mL.
2. Use duct tape to tape the 20 oz bottle on top of the 2 Liter (connecting bottoms
together...20 oz right side up, 2 L upside down)
3. Make sure cap is on the 20 oz bottle
4. Use duct tape to tape the 4 appropriate fins on bottom bottle (2 L)
5. Take outside to launch and measure lengths
6. Launch at a 45 degree angle for each trial (placing on the launcher, clasping the bottle
on, turning the pressure on with the switch, and pulling the string to launch it.)
7. Measure how far bottle launched using the “3 meters per fence section” measurement.

8. Carry out experiment and repeat needed steps for each trial

G. (Launching the rockets) –here is what the rocket should look like ::

H.

I.
My data supported my hypothesis. I hypothesized that smaller wings would conclude
in shorter distances traveled because small wings don't give enough support to the heavy
rocket. This is exactly what happened – the bigger the wings, the farther the distance
traveled. You can see this in my graph because the distance traveled goes up as the wing
height went up. The average distance traveled went up as the wing height went up in my

table as well. BUT, I could have made the wings even bigger to see how big was TOO big,
resulting in trying to find the best distance possible. Because, maybe if I would have done
even bigger wings I could have gotten more distance? I would have also placed the bottle
onto the launcher a little faster & clasping it on better because on some of the trials, there
was water gushing out of it in the time I was getting ready to launch. This resulted in a
different weight for some of the different trials which effected it. ALSO, in the middle of our
experiments, the rocket I was using went onto the roof ! So, if I were to do it again, I would
hope that it wouldn't land on the roof again & not have to change rockets – changing the
controlled variables a little (I couldn't get it exactly the same as it was).
