Sr High UMARMY Mission
(Livingston, Tx)

Hey church!
July means watermelon and fireworks, Big House and UM ARMY, VBS, and of
course, the heat! I hope youre enjoying Gods many blessings in both the sun and the
showers. One of my favorite passages of Scripture is Colossians 3:23, Whatever you do,
work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, and can I
tell you, I am grateful to be serving with so many folks who are working, in everything
they do, as for the Lord, and not for themselves or anybody else. Theres no other church
Id rather be serving.
Let me tell you some of the great things that God is doing in Asbury.
The Trustees committee has entered into a contract with Ideal Impact, a ministry that
helps churches more efficiently manage utilities costs. It will be a 4.5 year relationship,
and as a part of that, new thermostats will be installed in the church this month. The cost
for these thermostats and some new lights will come out of a portion of our electricity
savings that will be returned back to Ideal Impact over the next 4 years. Our estimated
savings back to Asbury over the next 15 years is $148,000. Im really proud of the way
the Trustees are continuing to make decisions that increase financial stewardship and
ministry dollars at the same time. So heres the major change for church membersabsolutely everything that happens at the church campus needs to be calendared with
Andrea, our office administrator. The AC will be scheduled using a program online, and
anytime a room is scheduled to be used, the temperature will be automatically set
between 70-74 degrees. But if something is not on the schedule, that room could be pretty
cool (during the winter), or more likely, pretty warm, when you arrive. So please make
sure you fill in calendar requests so that we can insure your groups comfort.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Focus Group meeting on June 26th.
What we heard is that the congregation has a desire to continue to increase financial
health and also reach out to our community at the same time. Look inside for a summary,
and a list of those who participated. If you didnt make it, feel free to ask about it from
someone who did. Many thanks to Ginger Biehl for such an impressive presentation.
As you know, our vision is to enable Jesus to move from the margins to the center in
ministry for and with neighborhood families. The Leadership Council agreed on 3 areas
of emphasis to work on for 2016 to help us move further into our vision. One was to
deepen the invitational culture of our church. This past week, 2,000! door hangers went
out to our neighbors to let them know what God is doing at Asbury. Our second goal was
to work on aligning our missions and ministries to our vision. Janice Williams has been
spearheading a Small Group Strategy Team this summer that will be bringing forward
some innovative recommendations to help us accomplish just that. And our third goal was
to increase the ministry value of our grounds. Not only do we now have a gaga pit,
volleyball court, bluebonnet field, and are working on a peewee baseball field, but this
Thursday, a group of 25 students who play on the volleyball court weekly were invited to
play water balloon volleyball with our student ministries. Its amazing to see what God is
doing as we listen for His voice, step forward in faith, and partner with Him in what He
wants to do. I think a major reason we are seeing this ministry fruit is because in several
places within the church, before we begin any discussions, we are first engaging in deep
prayer. Well need more and more of that as we keep moving forward, or else how will
we know Gods calling?
Sleepy summer? Not here!
Blessings,

Financial Focus Group

We had 31 Asbury members participate in an openinvitation Financial Priorities focus group on June
26th. This meeting included group discussion of ideas for
expanding on the good things God is doing through Asbury
and on financial goals for the future. The meeting consisted
of brief brainstorming what were excited about at Asbury
and wish list for Asbury, followed by overview of current
financial status, and ultimately focusing on ideas for
financial goals and priorities.
The group expressed enthusiasm for accomplishments
and ongoing progress in the areas of facility improvements,
outreach, youth/childrens ministries, community events,
increased church attendance, and financial stability. Ideas
for financial goals & priorities were primarily focused in the
areas
of
debt
reduction
and
facility/property
improvement. Amongst the participants, both of these areas
are high priorities for Asbury. Thanks to those who
participated in this activity!
We hope to engage the broader Asbury family in ongoing
discussions of Asbury financial goals and priorities. More
to come on this topic.

Studies have proven that families that attend church with the
father have a higher percentage of children that continue going
to church after leaving home. Men, you are important to the
future of your children! But, just going on Sunday mornings is
not enough. That is why small groups are important. Here at
Asbury we have a small group just for men: Asbury United
Methodist Men. We meet on the third Sunday of each month at
5 pm.
We do service projects, have a devotional and discuss a wide
range of topics. This is a chance for men to form bonds with
other men, serve the church, serve the community, and serve
GOD.
If you would like more information, contact the church or other
men here at Asbury.
Our next meeting is Sunday, July 17th. Come join us!

Annual Conference musings

Late May and early June, I attended the Annual Conference of
the United Methodist Church. This was a unique experience.
Pastor Lindsay asked me to write a short summary of my views
of the Conference.
This was the annual meeting of all the Methodist Churches in
the Texas Conference. There were several motions, amendments,
and proposals that were brought up, debated, and voted on.
This was where this meeting differed from what is taking
place in the rest of the world today. There was much talk from
both sides of all items, both pro and con. The one thing that
stood out to me was how it played out. After all votes were cast,
regardless of the outcome, everyone was still UNITED
Methodist.
Being UNITED seems to be something missing in the world
today. If someone looks, acts, dresses, or believes different they
are considered wrong. The word UNITED is part of Asbury
UMC, Texas Annual Conference, General Conference of UMS,
and in the UNITED States of America.
United does not mean that you agree with everything someone
says, but you do allow them to have their say without becoming
violent. There is hope for the world as long as the United
Methodist Church has any say in it.
That is my hope for all, that we as a people can learn to get
along with each other regardless of our views. To quote Lincoln,
A house divided cannot stand. I feel that that applies to us as a
denomination, and to the whole world today.
Mike Sweny

To the members of Asbury UM Church:

This is the kind of church that I wish every person belonged
to! In the 6 weeks that my mom, Billie Jo Riley, was in the
hospital, not a day went by that she did not get a call, card, or
personal visit from an Asbury member! I am so very
thankful that she has such a loving, caring, and faithful
church family. From the pastor to the handbell group,
Sunday School group, office angels and others, I give you my
heartfelt thanks and say Blessings to You for all that you
did. My mom is on the road to recovery by way of these
folks and all the prayers that went out for her. Thank you
again Asbury UMC. And the King will answer them, Truly
I tell you, just as you did it (visited) to one of the least of
these who are members of my family, you did it to me.
