Unit 1: The Nature of Stress

Information to Remember:

Fight or Flight response is males why of responding to stress mostly; their

brain will tell them if they should feel threatened or not. Females on the other
hand have this same response but they also try to sit and figure things out and
talk when dealing with stress.

Stress is a sense of threat whether it is emotional, mental, spiritual or physical.

Your body releases epinephrine to get organs and tissues prepared for the
fight or flight response.

The balance of emotional, physical and spiritual well being is known as the
Wellness Paradigm. Being healthy in all these sections contributes to your
overall wellbeing.

Unit 2: The Body as Battlefield

2
Unit

Information to Remember:

When certain stressors keep repeating our memory tends to start decreasing.
This is due to the weakening of the hippocampal brain cells.

Multitasking is a great skill to have in the professional world and even your
personal life but it does cause the loss of organizational skills. Because you are
doing so much at once it is lowing your ability to process effectively.

The damage caused from a high amount of stress and excess glucocorticoids
results in interruption of the primary functions of the hippocampus. This
causes neurological damage and can lead to death if the stress response keeps
the adrenal secretions of glucocorticoids coming.

Unit 3: Feast or Famine

3
Unit

Information to Remember:

Anger and fear are in some ways the same but also differ. Anger makes your
skin appear red and increases blood flow while fear makes you look pale. They
can bring things upon like ulcers, headaches and hypertension.

The Building blocks of Psychological stressors are social support, control,

predictability, perception of things worsening and outlets for frustration.
Support systems help with dealing with stress while predictability does not
help because it does not take the negative impact away.

Defense mechanisms are used when someone is under stress. Examples of

defense mechanisms are regression, displacement, projection and humor
along with many others.

Unit 4: One Planet Under Stress

4
Unit

Information to Remember:

The four elements of self-esteem should start when you are a child. They
include connectedness, uniqueness, power, and models. Models are a guiding
principle in life that share goals, ideals, values, and personal standards.

Human spirituality is based on the seasons of the world. For example winter is
emptying process, Spring is the grounding, Autumn is centering, and summer
is connecting. All are very important for human spiritually.

Stress prone personalities are Type A personality which feels everyone needs
them for help, needs to be in control and the head of order.

Unit 5: Under Stress: What Now?

5
Unit

Information to Remember:

Successful aging is due to the amount of the hormone glucocorticoids in adults

in non stressful situations.

Humor is considered a defense mechanism which relieves stress in people.

Humor increases pleasure and decreases pain in humans.

The right side of the brain holds no concept of time like the left side does. Left
side of the brain is more imaginative and creative. Right side of the brain is
more logical than the left.
