The text describes

using a KWHL chart.
Next time I could
incorporate the H: how
do you know?

The teacher
incorporates tools of
language development
into planning and
instruction, including
strategies for making
content accessible to
English language
learners and for
evaluating and
supporting their
development of English
proficiency.
The teacher
communicates verbally
and nonverbally in ways
that demonstrate
respect for and
responsiveness to the
cultural backgrounds

vocabulary.

The KWL chart allowed

me to collect
information from my
students before I began
teaching. Gallavan
states, Asking students
what they want to learn
provides you the keys
to cultural
competence.
New vocabulary was
introduced in this
lesson, throughout the
reading. However that
was the only strategy
used to present the
new vocabulary. To
successfully meet this
standard I needed to
use more strategies.

In the lesson, I
encouraged each child
to share an idea or
question. After
watching the lesson
there were a few times I
stopped the
conversation when I

I think providing more

time for peer to peer
conversation would
have been beneficial to

Doing this would

provide more insight
into the students
background knowledge.
Using more visuals or

be two strategies I
could use in the future.

perspectives learners
bring to the learning
environment
The teacher engages
students in learning
experiences that
encourage learners to
understand, question,
and analyze ideas from
diverse perspectives so
that they master the
content.

The teacher facilitates

learners ability to
develop diverse social
and cultural
perspectives that
expand their
understanding of local
and global issues and
create novel
approaches to solving
problems.
The teacher reflects on
his/her personal biases
and accesses
resources to deepen
his/her own
understanding of
cultural, ethnic, gender,
and learning
differences to build
stronger relationships
and create relevant
learning experiences.

came to acquire the

information.

The use of the KWL

chart encourages
students to question
new content. It also
allows them to go back
and analyze the new
information they
learned throughout the
unit. This allows them
to incorporate it into
their existing schema.
I did not provide
multiple opportunities
for children to share
their problem solving or
understanding.

After discussing what

the students learned. It
is important to get
feedback from students
about the connections
they made between
context and culture.
How, is another good
item to add to the chart
to help make this
connection.
Next time I can give
them choices of ways
to expand their
understanding. Provide
alternative final
assignments that allow
them to express their
new understanding in a
creative way. Then
have students share
that with the class.
A good strategy to help
meet this standard as
indicated in the text, is
a parent questionnaire.
Before starting a unit it
could be beneficial to
send home
questionnaires to
parents.

I did not met this

standard. I did not
access resources
during planning to
better meet this
standard.

For this particular unit, I

could have asked
parents if their child has
ever seen penguins,
etc.
Asked parents to send
in relevant items.
