Science Grade 1- Lesson Plan
1. TEKS:
Students know that organisms resemble their parents and have structures
and processes that help them survive within their environments- Science
Category 10
OBJECTIVE:
Students will select an animal, observe and report key features regarding that
animal. This lesson will tie in science, math, writing, art and reading.
2. BIG UNDERSTANDINGS
Animals are an important part of our world. They live in many different places
with different traits that help them survive. Biology in these contexts are of
great interest to children and will allow me to teach the beginnings of
observation and reporting skills.
3. ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
Students should use directed embedded activities to create their portfolio
about their animal and eventually present to the class on what they have
learned. They will include physical traits, habitat, simplified food chain and
life cycle.
4. OPENING HOOK
Conversation starters- animal models will be available on tables. I will begin
the lesson by showing pictures of camouflaged animals in their habitat and
asking students to find the animals. Then I will ask them why they think they
look like that.
5. INPUT
Vocabulary- Camouflage, habitat, food web, Biology. I would like to include a
field trip or class visit by a biologist, zoologist or veterinarian. I will also
present them will reference books that are age appropriate and multimedia
sites.
MODELING
I will present my own animal portfolio as a reference so that the children will
understand what it expected of them.
GUIDED PRACTICE/MONITORING
Direct students to books regarding animals, allow for some art projects,
include counting and measuring projects
Example- food web activity. I will have precut animals and string available for
the students. I will start with an animal and ask students what they think it
eats. I will then then direct them to place a string from the first animal to the
next, and so forth.
CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING
I will use check lists and interviews to make sure their learning and progress
is on track.

Video and computer/projection, paper, art supplies, string, animal cut outs,
books, applications.

How many different animals do you think there are in the world?
How are they like us?
How are they different?
Exhibit student learning.
Describe what jobs exist that work with animals
what animal would you like to learn about next?
9. Technology
a) Some activities could include websites like pbs.org that encourage
animal exploration.
b) I will also be using the overhead projector or a slide show to view the
camouflaged animals.
