The 2015-2016 Ohio Cattlemens Association (OCA) BEST (Beef
Exhibitor Show Total) Program wrapped up May 7 with its annual
awards banquet held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.
The banquet is a time to celebrate the many achievements of our
BEST participants, both in and out of the show ring, says Stephanie
Sindel, BEST coordinator. Each participant is recognized for their hard
work by family, friends, and BEST supporters alike.
Several representatives from program sponsors, Bob Evans Farms,
Burroughs Frazier Farms, Farm Credit Mid-America, M.H. Eby, Ohio
Farm Bureau Federation, and Weaver Livestock, were on hand to help
present awards totaling more than $50,000 in belt buckles, luggage,
show materials, and other awards.
This years BEST program featured 15 sanctioned shows that
weaved its way across the state with over 550 youth participants showing 740 head of market animals and heifers.
Miami Countys Brianna Ellish was selected as a BEST Junior Rep
for the 2016-2017 show season. She also earned the title of 8th Overall
Senior Showman. Briannas parents are Brian and Pam from Tipp City.

published say they enjoy the reaction of friends, neighbors, and family

All you need to do is send an interesting color picture (original photos preferred, or if emailing, use either a jpeg or tiff format) of good quality,
along with some background information. Farm-related photos are best suited for country living. When taking your pictures, make sure the lighting is

The Ohio Cattlemens Association awarded Charlie, Jordan, and Scott

Diehl, owners of Diehl Cattle Company of Bradford, the Seedstock
Producer of the Year Award at the OCA awards banquet held January 23 at
the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio.
OCA and Farm World jointly sponsor the Seedstock Producer of the Year
Award, which was created to recognize top beef seedstock producers in
Ohio. The award was presented in a video that was sponsored by Darke
County Veterinary Services and Fulton Road Genetics and can be found on
OCAs YouTube channel.
Diehl Cattle Company began with six registered Gelbvieh cows, has
grown to a herd of 200 cows, and today is one of the top seedstock producers in western Ohio. The bulls are marketed in Missouri at SeedstockPlus, a
network comprised of cattlemen from around the country marketing elite
breeding cattle.
Charlie credited their success with the seedstock program to the networking opportunities theyve had with others. The family also has a construction business, but in the future the family is hoping to rely more on the
cattle operation. Scott said, Our goal is to always try to improve our cow
herd. The Diehl familys dedication to improving their herd has been recognized by cattlemen throughout Ohio and across the country.

Donation to Local AWANA Clubs
Stillwater Community Church AWANA Clubs has received a $2,500
donation from Americas Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the
Monsanto Fund and directed by local farmer Larry Lavy of Miami County.
The donation will help our AWANA Clubs reach out more effectively to our
community with weekly activities for children to build into their lives character and team spirit. This donation will facilitate the purchasing of equipment for the children in our community to have a fun experience in games
that will build team spirit and at the same time a fun time doing it.
For six years, Americas Farmers Grow Communities has collaborated
with farmers to donate over $22 million to more than 8,000 community
organizations across rural America. Winning farmers will direct donations
to nonprofits to help fight rural hunger, purchase life saving fire and EMS
equipment, support ag youth leadership programs, buy much needed classroom resources, and so much more.
Americas Farmers Grow Communities partners with farmers to support
local nonprofit causes that positively impact farming communities across
rural America. Grow Communities is one program in the Americas Farmers
community outreach effort, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Other programs include Americas Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, which encourages
rural youth to remain in agriculture and provides $1,500 college scholarships to high school and college students pursuing ag-related degrees and

Judy Family Offers Scholarship

For Sheep Producing Families
The family of the late Dr. John (Jack) Judy has established a memorial
scholarship in his name to be administered through the Ohio Farm Bureau
Foundation. The family has agreed to award one $1,500 scholarship annually
to a second-year college student who is either a member, or whose parents are
members, of the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association. The student doesnt
have to attend an Ohio school, but must be a resident of Ohio.
Interested and qualified students can apply online at ofbf.org/foundation
through June 30. Finalists will be interviewed during the Ohio State Fair by a
selection committee and members of the Ohio Sheep Improvement
Association.
Preference is given to agriculture majors, but its not a requirement.

Ohio Farm Bureau Recognized

During AFB Convention
Ohio Farm Bureau Federation was well represented during the
American Farm Bureau Federations 97th Annual Convention in
Orlando, Florida.
Ohio received all six Awards of Excellence, which recognize
excellence in membership achievement and implementation of outstanding programs serving members. The awards are earned by states
that have demonstrated outstanding achievements in any of these six
program areas: Education and Outreach; Leadership Development;
Member Services; Membership Initiatives; Policy Development and
Implementation; and Public Relations and Communications.
American Farm Bureau recognizes the best county Farm Bureau
programs through its County Activities of Excellence awards, and this
year seven of 24 of those top projects and activities came from Ohio.
The county Farm Bureaus that won for their innovative programs
were Athens-Meigs, Auglaize (and partnering Farm Bureaus in
Champaign, Clark, Darke, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Shelby and Union
counties), Clermont, Fulton, Knox, Medina, and Pike. They showcased their innovative programming at the IDEAg Trade Show during
AFBFs convention.
Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation also received the Apex Award,
given to Farm Bureaus that have increased total contributions to the
AFB Foundation for Agriculture by 10 percent or more over the previous year.
Ohios Young Agricultural Professionals competed in three Young
Farmers and Ranchers contests: Discussion Meet, Excellence in
Agriculture, and Achievement Award.
Elizabeth Long of London made it to the Sweet 16 in the
Discussion Meet, which tests participants subject knowledge, problem solving abilities, and personal and small group communications
skills. Marlene Eick of Radnor finished in the Top 10 of the
Excellence in Agriculture Award, which recognizes successful young
agricultural professionals who are actively contributing and growing
through their involvement with Farm Bureau and agriculture.
Competing in the Achievement Award contest were Nick and Jessica
Dailey of Sardinia who were judged on the growth of their farm business and involvement in Farm Bureau and their community.
Ohio Farm Bureau is the states largest and most inclusive farm
organization with a mission of forging a partnership between farmers

CINNAMON CHEESECAKE
(2) 8 oz. tubes crescent rolls
(3) 8 oz. cream cheese
1-1/2 cups sugar
1-1/2 tsps. vanilla

1 stick margarine
3 tsps. cinnamon
DIRECTIONS:
Press one package of crescent rolls into a 15x9 inch pan.
Cream together cream cheese, one cup sugar, and vanilla.
Spread on top of crescent rolls. Press the other crescent
rolls on top of cream cheese mixture. Melt margarine and
pour on top, then take 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon, mixed,
and put on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

2-3 Dozen Mushrooms 8 oz. Cream Cheese
2 Pounds Bacon
Clean mushrooms. Take the stems out and fill hole
with cream cheese. Then wrap a slice of bacon
around it. Put a toothpick in the center to hold bacon
in place. Put on grill. Leave on grill until bacon is
crispy. These are very good!

6-8 chicken breasts
2 Tbsps. butter
3 Tbsps. minced garlic
1 cup catsup
1/4 cup water
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
3 Tbsps. brown sugar
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
In a saucepan, over medium heat, cook garlic in butter for
two minutes. Stir in remaining ingredients except chicken.
Bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer, covered, for 10
minutes, stirring often.
Meanwhile, lightly brown chicken on both sides in skillet
sprayed with Pam. Place chicken in greased 9x13 inch
pan. Pour sauce over top.
Bake, uncovered, in 375 degree oven for 1 hour, 15
minutes, or until tender. May occasionally baste with pan
juices, if needed.

Snapshot of the Month Entries Sought

Our readers tell us one of their favorite pages is the Snapshot of the
Month. Winners who are always pleasantly surprised to find their picture
published say they enjoy the reaction of friends, neighbors, and family
members.
All you need to do is send an interesting color picture (original photos preferred, or if emailing, use either a jpeg or tiff format) of good quality,
along with some background information. Farm-related photos are best suited for country living. When taking your pictures, make sure the lighting
is sufficient, and that your subjects are centered in the viewfinder. Stand
back far enough so that heads arent cut off. If need be, we can crop photos
to eliminate any unnecessary background.
Dont forget to include your actual mailing address if you email your
picture and information to us, so your prize can be mailed out to you.
