1. Profile
|1am the executive director of the Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) and have been in this position since
February 2015. | was previously employed at Lawyers for Human Rights for 12 years.
The Southern Africa Litigation Centre is a regional NGO based in Johannesburg and operating in 10 SADC
Countries. Its mandate is to protect the rule of law and strengthen human rights. SALC carries out this work by
‘making interventions in strategic legal cases and high level advocacy. | manage a team of 12 persons which
‘oversees litigation cases and advocacy in the countries of operation over several different programme areas
including: Freedom of Expression, Sexual and Reproductive Rights, Health Rights, Women’s Land and Property.
Rights, International Criminal Justice, Rights of Sexual Minorities and Rule of Law. I manage an organisational
budget of ZAR 15 million per annum which has for several years received unqualified audits,
‘At Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) | was the manager of the Refugee and Migrent Rights Programme. LHR
provides free legal services to vulnerable, marginalised and indigent individuals and communities, both non-
‘national and South African, who are victims of unlawful infringements of their constitutional rights. | managed
2 team of 26 staff members in multiple locations over several programme areas. | have been managing @
Programme budget of approximately ZAR 8 million per annum which has received unqualified audits for the
duration.
{In both positions | was direetly involved in fundraising and budget management. | have overseen litigation and
‘advocacy work. Currently | am responsible for providing oversight and accountability for planning, programme
esign and the delivery of objectives, strategies, plans and budgets. On behalf of both these organisations | have
made submissions to the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, United Nations Human Rights
Committee and various ACHPR and UN Special Rapporteurs.
' have significant expertise in the asylum and migration sector. | have worked on legal and policy analysis which
includes drafting submissions on legal amendments as well as participating in the legal amendment processes
‘and submissions to Parliamentary portfolio committees. | was the chair of the board of the Consortium for
Refugees and Migrants in South Aftica (CORMSA) from 2007- 2011. | was previously the Southern African
representative for the International Detention Coalition (IDC) and sat on the IDC’s Advisory Panel. | am a
founding member of the secretariat of the African NGO Taskforce whieh is 2 network of organisations working
(on refugee protection in Africa. | have experience of the legal frameworks on asylum issues of several African
Counties asa result of this exposure. | currently sit on the boards of Sonke Gender Justice and the South African
History Archive,
{have two law degrees and several additional qualifications as well as many years’ experience particulary in the
asylum anc migration sector. | have good knowledge of the application of the domestic legislation and
international conventions and protocols especially those dealing with human rights{have media and communications experience and expertise. Ihave been the face of LHR’s Refugee and Migrants
Rights Programme and have done media for SALC. At Lawyers for Human Rights | have been instrumental in the
development of documentary films to bring attention to issues of concern to the organisation. | have excellent
‘Fal and written communication skis. have in 2013 been a contributing author to a text book on refugee law,
“Refugee Law in South Africa’. | have also drafted and edited a guide for LHR on obtaining citizenship,
“Promoting Citizenship and Preventing Statelessness in South Africa: A Practitioner's Guide”

aia with issues such as Harmonisation of Immigration legislation, Labour Migration, Human Trafficking.
