Updating Guide
Older 3-wire systems may be converted to an IM-3303 Series Radio-Intercom System.
This booklet outlines the updating procedure; indicating the components that may be retained
from the existing system and the units that should be replaced.
NOTE: Due to component size differences, some wall patching may be required when
installing new systems.
IMPORTANT: The Radio-Intercom Systems are designed to be used only with NuTone specified wire.
No other wire should be used. The use of wire other than NuTone wire may result in faulty installation and
improper operation. Refer to the installation instructions packaged with each model for detailed installation
information.

Master Station:

Wiring Requirements:
Three-wire system.
Maximum of 300 feet per remote station.
Maximum of 2000 feet total per system.
Rough-In Frame for Master Station:
Model IR-104 Rough-In Frame
(includes (2) Model 301T transformers and
omni-directional AM/FM antenna.)
Power Source:
(2) Model 301T transformers (16 volt, 30VA.)
Mounts in transformer boxes located in bottom of
rough-in frame.

UPDATING 3-WIRE RADIO-INTERCOM SYSTEMS

Master Station Model Numbers: 2011, 2012, 2015 or 2016
Wiring Requirements:
Use existing 3-conductor wiring from the master station to remotes.
AM only systems will require the installation of the FM/AM antenna.
Rough-In Frame for Master Station:
Replace existing rough-in and patch wall surface as necessary.
Use IR-104 Rough-In.
Power Source:
Use transformer(s) supplied with new rough-in housing.
5" Speakers with Controls:
Replace existing inside speakers with 5" speakers and IA-51 Surface Mount Update Frame or IA-55WH/L Update
Frame. Or, install 8" speakers with IR-80 Rough-In.
8" Speakers with Controls:
Replace existing 8" speakers.
Use existing speaker frames and wiring. (Wall patching may be required)
Remote Controls:
Replace existing remote controls.
For inside remotes, remove 3-gang switch box and replace with IR-91 Update Frame.
Speakers without Controls:
Replace existing speakers.
Use existing speaker frames and wiring.
Door Speakers:
Replace existing speakers. Use existing wiring and Rough-Ins. Note: For door speakers that include
a chime pushbutton, an additional two-conductor wire will be required.

Master Station Model Numbers: 2031, 2032, 2034-2036, 2053-2058,

2062-2065, 2067, 2068, 2090 or 2091
Wiring Requirements:
Use existing 3-conductor wiring from the master station to remotes.
AM only systems will require the installation of the FM/AM antenna.
Rough-In Frame for Master Station:
Remove and replace with model IR-104.
Use Updating Frame IA-119WH (white finish).
Power Source:
Existing source is a remotely located transformer (120vAC or 30vAC).
Install (2) 301T transformers (supplied with IR-104 Rough-In) for IM-3303.
5" Speakers with Controls:
Replace existing inside speakers with 5" speakers and IA-55WH/L Update Frame.
Or, use 8" speakers with IR-80 Rough-In.
8" Speakers with Controls:
Replace existing 8" speakers; use IA-83WH/L Update Frame and IR-80 Rough-In.
Remote Controls:
Replace existing remote controls.
For inside remotes, remove 2- or 3-gang switch box and replace with IR-91 Rough-In.
Speakers without Controls:

Install (2) 301T transformers (supplied with IR-104) for IM-3303.
5" Speakers with Controls:
Replace existing inside speakers with 5" speaker. Replace Rough-In with model IR-50.
8" Speakers with Controls:
Replace existing 8" speaker. Use IA-83WH/L update frame and IR-80 Rough-In.
Remote Controls:
Replace existing Remote Controls. Use IR-91 Rough-In.
Speakers without Controls:
Use existing speakers.
Door Speakers:
Replace existing speakers. Use existing Rough-In.
Door speakers with chime pushbuttons will require an additional two-conductor wire.

Master Station Model Numbers: IM/IMA-303, IM/IMA-323

IM-, IMA, B-, C-, D-313
Wiring Requirements:
Use existing 3-conductor wiring from the master station to remotes.
Rough-In Frame for Master Station:
Remove and replace with model IR-104.
Use Updating Frame IA-109WH (white finish) for IM-3303.
NOTE: For 313 Series, the wall must be framed and patched to accommodate
the IR-104 for Rough-In.
Power Source:
Install (2) 301T transformers (supplied with IR-104).
5" Speakers with Controls:
Remove existing speakers and rough-ins.
Install IR-50 Rough-Ins and replace speakers.
8" Speakers with Controls:
Replace existing speakers.
Use IA-83WH/L Updating Frames and IR-80 Rough-Ins.
Remote Controls:
Replace existing units.
For inside locations, remove 3-gang switch box and install IR-91 Rough-In.
Speakers without Controls:
Use existing units. Use existing wiring and rough-in frames.
Door Speakers:
Existing door speaker may be used.

NOTE: IM-3303 systems do

not include the Security
Protection features of the
IMA-323.

Use existing 5-conductor wiring from the master station to remotes (connections to 3-conductors on Channel A).
NOTE: For Channel B speaker, the wall must be patched.

Remove and replace with IR-104.
Use Updating Frame IA-119WH (white finish).
Power Source:
Install (2) 301T transformers (supplied with IR-104) for IM-3303.

Model IA-28: Plays eight (8) notes for front door, two (2) notes

Model IA-29: Deluxe Chime Module plays your choice of ten

one (1) note for a third door. Melodies include Westminster
Chimes (8 notes and 4 notes), Anniversary Waltz, Beethoven's

NOTE: For best results it is suggested that the IM-5000
Intercom System is installed in such a way that a
combination of Home Run wiring and Looped wiring
(zone wiring) are both used.
IM-5000 is surface mounted. No Rough-In Required.

ribbon cable can be used by separating the ribbon
cable into 6 individual wires. Follow wiring guide
supplied with IM-4406 Master.
IMA-4006 - Use existing 6-conductor wiring from the
master station to remote locations.
Rough-In Frame for Master Station:
IM-4406 - Remove and replace with IR-105 rough-in
frame.
Power Source:
IM-4406: Use (2) 801T transformers included with
rough-in frame.

Use existing speakers and rough-ins.
8" Speakers with Controls:
Use existing speakers and rough-ins.

(one 6 wire cable for every remote at the master station)
then the system can be converted to either an IM-4406
or IM-5000 System.
Wiring Requirements:
Use existing 6-conductor wiring from master station
to remote locations.
Rough-In Frame for Master Station:
Install IR-105 rough-in frame for either IM-4406 or
surface mount IM-5000 Master Station.

Power Source:
IM-4406: Use (2) 801T transformer(s) included with
IR-105 Rough-In Frame. IM-5000: Use (1) 401T
transformer.
Speakers with Controls:
Remove and replace existing speakers and
rough-ins with IR-50 or IR-80 Rough-In Frames and
5" or 8" Speakers.
NOTE: Wall patching may be required..
Door Speakers:
Replace existing speakers. Use existing wiring
and rough-in frames.

*The IM-5000 can be mounted remotely (i.e., pantry, closet, etc.) and existing master replaced with 8" speaker with

Power Source:
Use (2) 801T transformer(s) included with the IM-4406

5" Speakers with Controls:

Remove existing speakers and rough-in frames.
Install IR-50 Rough-Ins and install new speakers.
8" Speakers with Controls:
Remove and replace existing speakers. Use IA-83
Updating Frame with IR-80 Rough-In Frames.

and bottom of the unit.
Speakers without Controls:

Model CP-95

Model IA-28 Chime Module: Plays eight (8) notes for front door,
two (2) notes for rear door and one (1) note for a third door.
Model IA-29 Deluxe Chime Module: Plays your choice of ten
(10) melodies for front door, plus two (2) notes for rear door,
one (1) note for a third door. Melodies include Westminster
Chimes (8 notes and 4 notes), Anniversary Waltz, Beethoven's
Fifth, Dixie, Greensleeves, Happy Birthday, Jingle Bells, Joy To
The World, Mazel Tov, Oh Tannenbaum, and Star Spangled
Banner.
A NuTone Electronic Chime may also be used with the IM-4406
Radio-Intercom and IM-5000 Intercom.

Auto-reverse Cassette Deck recesses in the wall near the

Master Station. Lets you enjoy your favorite cassette tapes from
any speaker station.
White finish with rounded corners. Installs in IR-90 Rough-in
frame (sold separately).
Controls include: direction, fast forward, rewind and eject.
Includes storage compartment for four (4) tapes.
