Abstract: Thispaperinvestigatestheindependenteffectoftwodimensions
(idealismandrelativism)ofethicalpositionsonorganizational
commitmentwithjobsatisfactionasamediator.Ethicalideologyis
supposedtoimpacttheethicaljudgmentofanindividualinbusiness
contexts.Burgeoningbusinessscamshaveurgedtheresearchersto
exploretheimpactoftheindividualdifferencesinethicalideologyon
organizationaloutcomes.Existingliteraturesuggeststhatindividualshigh
onidealismbelieveinuniversalmoralprinciplesandavoidchoosingthose
optionsthatinvolveharmingothers,butindividualshighonrelativismtry
todefytheseuniversalmoralprinciplesandbelieveinrelativeethical
judgments.Theargumentsinthisstudyaregroundedondeontological
andteleologicaltheories.Thisstudyhypothesizesthatidealistsrelymore
ondeontologicalconsiderationsandrelativistsrelymoreonteleological
considerationsforethicaljudgments.SocialExchangeTheoryhasbeen
employedtoexplaintheeffectofethicalpositionsofanindividualon
his/herorganizationalcommitment.Datacollectionwasdonefrom105
professionalsemployedindifferentsectorsandinvariousorganizationsin
India.Hierarchicalregresswnwasusedtotestthehypotheses.Itwas
foundthatjobsatisfactionmediatedtherelationshipbetweenethical
positions(idealismandrelativism)andorganizationalcommitment.The
resultsconfirmedthenegativerelationshipofidealismandthepositive
relationshipofrelativismwithjobsatisfactionandorganizational
commitment.Theimplicationsfortheoryandpracticearediscussed.
