READING
3. Read the following text then match the headings with the corresponding paragraphs as
given in the example:
Global warming is one of the most dramatic and urgent problems of our century. We dont
need to wait for governments to resolve this matter. Each of us must adopt a responsible lifestyle,
starting from little, everyday things.
1. _f)_ Choose reusable products. In order to reduce waste, you can buy products with
little packaging. Try to recycle anything made from paper, plastic, glass or aluminum.
Recycling half of your household waste can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
2. ____ By adding insulation and good weather stripping around doors and windows can
lead to almost 25% less heating costs. Keep the temperatures inside your home moderate at
all times. About 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide can be saved each year by setting the
thermostat 2 degrees lower in winter.
3.____ Less cars means fewer emissions. Try to make use of the community mass transit
system and consider carpooling as an alternative for going to work or school. A good driver
must have his tires properly inflated. This can result in an improvement in gas mileage by
more than 3 percent. Walking keeps people healthy. Purchase energy efficient vehicles which
will save more in later years.
4. ____More and more companies are now manufacturing home appliances that are
friendly with the environment. Refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers and water heaters now
come in a range of energy-efficient models. When buying a product choose one that doesnt
have excess packaging, especially if it cant be recycled. To save natural gas reserves
consider using biogas for cooking.
5.____ People use huge amounts of electricity nowadays. This will finally lead to an
exhaustion of natural resources or might even turn the planet into a dark one. An efficient
way of saving power is to replace regular light bulbs with CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light)
bulbs. Just one 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a CFL will save 30 dollars over its life
span. These CFL bulbs also last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Another way to
save electricity is by using solar power to run household appliances.
6. ____Turn off your computer, television, video player, or stereo when leaving home or
simply your room. Dont use excess light. Another valuable suggestion is to turn off water
when not using it. Whenever you shampoo your hair or brush your teeth, turn off the water
until it is needed for rinsing. This will generate a reduction in water bill and will also save a
vital resource for mankind.

7. ____Every parent has an obligation to educate his/her children to respect the

environment and to act responsibly in terms of saving energy sources. Educate them to
recycle, to find possible solutions to the problem of global warming both at home and at
school. Let them share information with friends and neighbours and take chances to
encourage them to participate actively in the life of the community. Teach them how to
reduce electricity, how to pollute less and how to recycle. Be role models for them.
8. ____Trees are the primordial source of oxygen for the planet. The reduction of areas
with trees means the greater the amounts of carbon dioxide in the air. During photosynthesis,
plants and trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. One tree can absorb up to a ton of
carbon dioxide during its lifetime.
9.____ Plastic is one of the least degradable materials. Therefore when in need of
carrying things, use biodegradable bags. These do not pollute, do not clog water lines and
keep the environment clean. They are also cost effective.
10.___ Your opinion matters. Share the information with your colleagues, group of
friends or even with unknown people through social networking. Every individual must take
initiative and counter the effects of global warming. You can contribute to the saving of the
environment.
f) Reduce, reuse, recycle
g) Try to choose smart products
h) Be responsible
i) Drive only if absolutely necessary
j) Change a light bulb

b) Avoid plastic
