CONTENTS

Punctuating Direct & Indirect Speech: This worksheet requires students to examine a little cartoon and then
transcribe the spoken words of the cartoon in both the direct and indirect forms.
Pre-knowledge required: Students should know how to punctuate dialogue & use quotation marks.
Extension Idea: Ask students to record snippets of conversations on their cellphones and then transcribe
them. They should correctly punctuate the written interactions.

Understanding Comma Splices*: This worksheet guides students through the definition of a comma splice, with
examples. The activity requires them to identify whether the sentences are correctly punctuated or if there are comma splices.
Pre-knowledge required: Understanding of independent clauses and uses of the comma. However,
actual knowledge of what a comma splice is, is not required as it is included.
Extension Idea: Once they have identified the incorrect sentences, instruct students to write the corrected
versions in their notebooks.
* The font on this page is rather large, so in the interest of saving paper, you could easily print 2 to a page.

Using the Apostrophe: This worksheet contains examples of apostrophe errors in advertising. Students have to
identify the errors and correct them, but they are also required to go one step further and explain the corrections.
Pre-knowledge required: Students should know the 2 uses of the apostrophe: omission and possession.
Extension Idea: Ask students to find examples of such errors in their daily lives: twitter posts, adverts,
Facebook statuses etc. they are not hard to find!

Using Commas Correctly: This worksheet contains various sentences which contain commas some correctly
punctuated, others incorrectly punctuated. Students have to identify whether the commas are used correctly or not, and then
go further to explain why or why not.
Pre-knowledge required: Students should know and understand the main uses of the comma.
Extension Idea: Ask students to write their own sentences displaying the different uses of the comma.

Using Colons and Semicolons: This worksheet contains 2 exercises: in the first, students have to fill in the missing
colons and semicolons; in the second, students have to identify the correctly punctuated sentences (multiple choice).
Pre-knowledge required: Students should know and understand the function of the semicolon and the
colon, and how they differ.
Extension Idea: Ask students to rewrite the sentences in exercise 1, eliminating the colons and semicolons
by rearranging the words and construction.

Understanding COMMA SPLICES

In written English, the comma splice is one of the most frequent errors. Learn
what it is, and how to avoid it, and your writing will be all the better for it.

WHAT IS IT?

A comma splice is the use of a comma to join two independent clauses.

EXAMPLE: It is late, we will not make the bus on time.

Either side of this comma, we

have independent clauses sentences in their
own right, which can stand alone.

NG
W RO

In English, t his is considered incorrect. In order t o join t oget her t wo independent

clauses, we need t o use a comma and a coordinat ing conjunction ( such as and, so or
but ) . Or we can writ e t hem as t wo separat e sent ences, or join wit h a semicolon.

EXAMPLES: It is late, and we will not make the bus on time.

It is late; we will not make the bus on time.
It is late. We will not make the bus on time.

PRACTICE

For each of the following, decide if they are complete sentences or if there are comma splices.
Comma

1. Susan was always late for work, nobody seemed to care.

2. He didnt like to ski, so he always went to the restaurant instead.
3. Sitting down, she realised she didnt have her work with her.
4. English is a difficult subject, Math is easy.

6. He makes delicious pizzas, I love them.
7. Jen loves cake, Tom likes cookies, but I love them both.
8. It is cold outside, put on a jacket.
9. As the students understood comma splice, the teacher was pleased.
10.

He loved her with all his heart, yet she couldnt love him back.

11.

Marking quizzes is bearable, marking essays is painful.

12.

Ben loves to read and travel, he often reads while travelling!
