Visit to St. Thomas More School of Law & Business

Tagum City, Davao del Norte

On 27 April 2016 at 4:00 in the afternoon the Chairman, Prof. Riguera and I paid St.
Thomas More School of Law & Business (The School for brevity).
The School was incorporated on the seventh of June 2011. It was given a Government
Recognition by LEB on August 31, 2012.
Some of the salient findings that conformed to LEB standards are the following:
1. Their curriculum is LEB compliant
2. Two of their faculty members have an LL.M.
3. Faculty members are evaluated by the students
Otherwise, some aspects of school of law operations are still wanting. The following
recommendations are hereto made and should be complied with within on a school year. A
follow-up visit during academic year 2017-2018 is hereby recommended:
1. The Mission/Vision of the School of Law should be posted prominently. It should
incorporate the values of St. Thomas More;
2. The policies of the school should be properly documented like e.g. there should be a
hiring policy;
3. There should be a faculty and student handbook;
4. A faculty development plan is also needed;
5. The syllabus needs updating. It should include methodologies and must conform to
the new OBE Standards.
6. There is also a need to improve the holdings of the library. There must be a separate
library for law students.
The transparency of the school with respect to comments from the students is wellappreciated by the visiting Board Members. This only goes to show that the school welcomes
criticisms as a barometer for improvement.
Wherefore, in view of the foregoing close monitoring and school visit next school year is
hereby recommended.
FOR BOARD ACTION.
