Outline:
Definition of communication
Elements of communication
Communication process
Models of communication
What is communication?
the process of
passing
information from a
source to a
receiver.
What is communication?
the art of transmitting
Features of Communication
Two-way process
Information sharing and understanding
Verbal and non-verbal
Circular flow
Goal-oriented
Continuous process
Pervasive activity
Elements of communication
Sender is a person who
sends the message. A
sender makes use of
symbols (words or
graphic or visual aids) to
convey the message
and produce the
required response.
Elements of communication
Message is a key idea that
the sender wants to
communicate.
Elements of communication
Channels are the way
messages are being
conveyed. These channels
include verbal such as
telephone, and face-to-face
conversations as well as nonverbal such as e-mail and text
messaging.
Elements of communication
Receiver/decoder is a person
for whom the message is
intended or aimed. The degree
to which the decoder
understands the message is
dependent upon various factors
such as knowledge of recipient,
their responsiveness to the
message, and the reliance of
encoder on decoder.
Elements of communication
Feedback is the main component of
communication process as it helps the
sender in confirming the correct
interpretation of message by the decoder.
Feedback may be verbal (through words)
or non-verbal (in form of smiles, sighs,
etc.). It may take written form also in form
of memos, reports, etc.
Elements of communication
Noise is the barrier or
hindrance that affect the
sending (encoding) and
receiving (decoding) of
the message.
Communication Process
Communication Process
Encoding is putting thought or information
into words, signs or symbols.
Communication Process
Decoding is when the sender interprets
the message and gives it meaning from
his/ her perspective
Communication Models
Communication is classified into two groups:
Linear
Interactive
Transactional
Linear Model
information is transmitted from sender to
receiver via a channel without the sender
receiving any feedback
Linear Model
Interactive Model
there is feedback; it allows the sender to
know that the message was received.
Interactive Model
Interactive Model
Transactional Model
means that communication is an ongoing and
continuously changing process. It shows that
each person in the communication act is both a
speaker and a listener, and can be
simultaneously sending and receiving
messages.
