by Len Lathrop
As the aging process does not make any
exceptions, no one can stop getting older. The
Town of Hudsons work force continues to get
older and so people make a decision to retire.
Thus was the case at the Hudson Fire Department,
as two long-term captains so said the retirement
card-- put in their papers. The town says goodbye to Captain Dave Morin after many years of
service. Also leaving the department was Captain
Kevin Grebinar.
The Hudson Board of Selectmen accepted the
recommendation of Fire Chief Robert Buxton to
promote four members of his department to new
responsibilities.
Following are short bios for the newly promoted
employees:
Captain Sean Mamone was hired by the Hudson
Fire Department in 2001, promoted to lieutenant
and then promoted to captain effective July 1. He
holds an associates degree in fire science from
Columbia Southern University. Captain Mamone
previously served in the U.S. Coast Guard and the
Mont Vernon Fire Department as a deputy chief.
Mamone will serve as the shift commander for
Group 1 and as director of communications.

Remember Hudson When ...

Centronics c. 1977
submitted by Ruth Parker
Any story about Centronics Data Computer
begins with Robert Howard. Earlier in his
career Howard worked with An Wang (Wang
Laboratories) on computer systems for the casino
industry. This led Howard to invent the dot-matrix
printer, and soon after he started Centronics Data
Computer with seven employees in Hudson,
about 1968. Centronics commercialized the small
dot-matrix printer that helped fuel the explosion
and popularity of personal computers.
From this small start-up the company grew to
more than 6,000 workers worldwide, including
3,000 in New Hampshire. Robert Howard passed
in 2014 and is remembered for his curiosity and
his generosity. He is credited with the invention
and popularity of the dot-matrix printer and
the parallel interface. During his lifetime he
formed more than two dozen companies. After
Centronics he later founded Presstek and Howtek
in Hudson during the 1980s.
Centronics purchased a three-acre land parcel
from Clement Industrial Park on Route 111 in
1969 with an agreement to begin construction
of a commercial building costing no less than
$70,000 within six months. Clement Industrial
Associates was formed in the 1960s by a group
of Hudson residents desiring to foster the growth

of industry within town. This

park was built on a portion of the
farmland of Harry and Mildred
Clement. The old Clement
Farmhouse, which burned in
1935, was located on the corner
of what is now Clement Road
and Route 111, about where Tip
Top Tree Service is now located.
By 1971 Centronics was
operating from this building
on Route 111. The company
reached a prime about 1979
with annual revenues over
$100 million. The business
of small printers became
very competitive; plus there
were product problems and
lawsuits. By 1982 Control Data
Corporation merged their printer
business into Centronics, invested
$25 million in the company and
took the business control away
from Howard. By 1987 Control
Data sold the printer business
to GENICON. Using the proceeds from this sale,
Centronics purchased EKCO Housewares in 1988
and the company was renamed EKCO.

Period. And, from concerts

they must love him, too!
He always seems to get
everyone on their feet

His brand of R+B, blues
and country is simply
unstoppable. His barrelhouse belting style of singing, hot harmonica
playing and exuberant onstage persona has
garnered him a legion of fans in the U.S., Europe
and beyond.
He has toured as the frontman of the legendary
Radio Kings, as a solo artist and has worked

his ability to entertain his fans.
I dont think of myself as a musician first but

submitted by the Humane Society

for Greater Nashua
The Humane Society for Greater Nashua
announced that it is hosting a rabies clinic
open to all pet owners. The clinic will be
held on Saturday the 16th from 9 a.m. to 12
p.m. inside of the Hudson Animal Control
Building located across the street from the
Hudson Police Department at 1 Constitution
Drive, Hudson. Make sure your pet is under
your control around the busy environment
and wont be a danger to others before
attending.
Owners are invited to bring their dogs,
leashed (no flexi-leads) and cats in secure
carriers. The rabies vaccine is $10 per pet
and will be given on a first-come, first-served
basis, with no appointment necessary.

For pets without a previous rabies vaccine,

they will receive a rabies vaccine valid
for one year; this will be indicated on the
certificate. For owners wanting a threeyear rabies vaccine, proof of a prior rabies
vaccine is required, and rabies tags alone
are not sufficient evidence. New, three-year
certificates will only be issued if the pet has
a signed certificate.
HSFN has been caring for many of
Southern NHs homeless and neediest pets.
They are pleased to offer this important
service to the community. Not only is the
rabies vaccine required by law, it helps keep
people and pets safer. Indoor pets are also
required to have the rabies vaccine. For any
questions about the rabies clinic contact
HSFN at 889-2275, ext. 21.

Driving Tips for

Traveling in Europe
As we just returned from a vacation trip to northern
Europe, I was interested to see the All About Me
column Try my Guide to Europe and Live a Little in
the July 1 HLN. I totally agree that travels in Europe
can expand your horizons. We have had many very
enjoyable trips and unique experiences. You can
use travel as an opportunity to learn about different
perspectives on world situations. Being in Europe
during the Brexit vote was very informative. You dont
hear much of that on cable news.
However, I have to disagree with the
recommendation to not rent a car in Europe (please
note that this is for continental Europe only, I
havent driven in the UK). If you need an automatic
transmission, you can always specify it. It may cost a
little more for an automatic transmission, but they have
them. We had a car with an automatic transmission
for this latest trip, even though I requested a manual
transmission. Many times the car rental company will
give you a car with an automatic transmission anyway,
because they dont want Americans learning how to
operate a manual transmission with their cars.
When driving in Europe, you need to be aware of
some differences:
1. No right turn on red. Never. Suppress that
impulse.
2. When sitting at a red light, youll notice that the
yellow light will come on with the red light for a
second or two before the light turns green. Thats
your signal to get ready to go. (Why cant we do
that?)
3. On the German autobahns and highways in most
countries, do not pass on the right. The left lane is
the passing lane. (Italian roads are another matter,
think driving in downtown Boston and you should
be okay.)
4. If you are in the passing lane on the autobahn,
comfortably driving 80 or 90 mph (140kph),
move over as soon as youve passed that truck
since the Mercedes behind you wants to be going
100 mph and needs to get out of the way of the
Porsche that wants to be going 120 mph.
Renting a car in Europe is part of the experience
and allows you to more easily get to many destinations
outside the main cities. For example, Neuschwanstein
Castle, while in the German state of Bavaria, is not in
Munich. Its about a 90-minute drive in your rental car
from Munich. Enjoy your travels.

Planned Parenthood and the

Race for NH Governor
Last Wednesday the NH Executive Council voted
by a 3-2 margin to restore state funding to Planned
Parenthood.
The highly anticipated vote was full of political
ramifications as two of the leading candidates for NH
Governor, Colin van Ostern (D) and Chris Sununu
(R), serve on the Executive Council. Sununu found
himself in the unenviable position of casting the
deciding vote in a highly publicized election-year issue.
Sununu ultimately broke with his GOP colleagues
and voted alongside van Ostern and Chris Pappas (D)
to restore funding.
On cue Sununu was immediately bashed for
abandoning conservative principles by all three of his
rivals in the Republican gubernatorial primary - Mayor
Ted Gatsas, State Senator Jeannie Forester and State

Representative Frank Edelblut.

What motivated this bold vote from Sununu? I have
a few ideas.
1. While it is unlikely his vote was entirely divorced
from his 2016 aspirations Sununu can now
make a solid case that he is more concerned about
delivering results to NH citizens than playing
politics.
2. There is considerable frustration in the electorate
over partisan gridlock and an overall lack of
legislative productivity. With over 40 percent of
registered voters undeclared New Hampshire
seems like a ripe environment for this brand of a
moderate who is willing to cross the aisle.
3. The vote shows Sununu can look at the entire
issue. Planned Parenthood is often minimized
to solely an abortion issue. Even if Sununu
has reservations related to abortion, Planned
Parenthood provides many other services related to
womens health such as cancer screenings, annual
exams and access to birth control. It is definitely
worth considering whether controversy over one
issue is worth denying many other aspects of
womens health coverage.
4. The vote was playing politics on Sununus part
and makes his candidacy more appealing to
independents and disaffected Democrats in
November. The inherent risk is that Sununu is
currently running in a Republican primary against
a fairly respectable field that will certainly use
this vote against him. It is worth considering
that NH allows open primaries so appealing to
independents is certainly of value in September as
well as November. If this theory is true, he must
be feeling confident about winning the primary
and is already focusing more on the general.
Election year votes are frequently synonymous with
meaningless political theatre. It is refreshing to see a
highly politicized election year vote lead to a tangible
result for the women of NH. Now going forward in a
competitive race for governor it will be very intriguing
to watch the effect of this vote run its course.

Wheres the Pride Outside at

Hudson Memorial School
To the Hudson School Board and Administration,
the Principal, staff, and maintenance at the Hudson
Memorial School. From an independent observer with
a critical and compassionate point of view, the school
grounds at the Hudson Memorial School show me
that theres not much pride in caring for this Memorial
School building and grounds.
I often ride my bike (Im 70 years old) around the
school early in the morning to simply enjoy the early
morning quiet and tranquility experience away from
the Central Street traffic but last Sunday from that
tranquility came a realization of what I was seeing this
time as I stopped for a drink of water; not just observing
but actually thinking about what I was looking at.
(very similar to my awakening experience with the trash
and liquor bottles scattered all along Greely Street a few
years ago.
I looked at the weeds everywhere, they are not just
new this season weeds either, that are too high to be
recent, trees and shrubs that havent been trimmed for
a long time, the broken rail fencing in the back of the
school, the torn and useless basketball netting with
a rusted backboard, the ground level exposed wiring

Support our Police Ocers

Police actions in Ferguson, MO; New York City,

Baltimore, Baton Rouge and Minnesota have been in
the news, and a few police officers have been seen using
excessive force and shooting people. I believe a small
number of police officers use excessive force, and these
officers should be held accountable for their actions.
The vast majority of police officers diligently do their
duty and treat criminals and suspects with respect.
Unfortunately, police officers are being vilified and
attacked because of a few over-zealous officers. The
result is police officers can be hesitant to take actions
that could possibly be construed as too forceful, and
thereby criminals are emboldened to commit violence.
Unfortunately, this could have been the situation
leading to the murder of the Dallas police officers. And,
by the way, why arent people on the streets protesting
the killing of the five Dallas police officers?
The ramifications of hesitation by police officers in
doing their jobs can place their lives in jeopardy and
have a negative
effect on public
safety.
We need to
and Child Care support our
police officers
who risk their
lives every day
to keep us safe.

that havent been painted since they were put in the

ground ages ago, road traffic surface markings that are
barely visible, bare round everywhere you look where
grass should be because its been ignored so long, the
weathered and rusted electrical transformers in the
back of the school and safety posts, all the weathered
and rusting doors in the back of the school, and on it
goes. All of the doors in the back that likely havent
been painted since they were installed, fire hydrants
with faded paint and rust, one hydrant that is so long
overdue for painting it looks like skin peeling after a
severe sun burn, the gray shed at the entrance to the
athletic field that likely hasnt been painted since it was
put there when the Ark floated through Hudson, a fire
hydrant along the road near that shed that is almost
obscured with weeds and soon will be the rusted and
damaged bike rack that likely isnt used anymore, and
the most notable observation is there is absolutely no
seating area outside for students to relax and be able to
talk to the teachers. Theres more of a sense of it being
like a neglected reform school-like building.
The outside of the Hudson Memorial School has no
character or personality, it has no eye appeal and all of
this has nothing to do with a lack of money; it has a lot
to do with a lack of interest and commitment, a lack of
enthusiasm.
No wonder students arent inspired and motivated;
their examples are the adults that run the reform
school. The outside looks like a Chicago slum school.
If I could see all of this just riding my bike around
for about 20 minutes, give some thought to how the
students feel about this school.
The taxpaying voters need to go over to the Hudson
Memorial School real fast like a bunny, with a copy
of this Opinion Offering as a check list to see for
themselves the conditions of that school, then the
taxpaying voters should demand some resignations
or firings because the students, the community, the
families and the tax payers are being short-changed.
And these observations were on a bright and sunny
Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
Looking at that building and the grounds is a normal
thing to do, but stopping to see what you look at is how
you understand that something is wrong and needs to
be fixed and theres a lot to be fixed there but it should
be under the leadership of a different kind of people;
who have a real interest in what they are supposed to be
doing for which they get paid to do. Its not the money
baby, its who gets the money for what theyre expected
to do for and with it.

Shedding Light on
Whats Happening
at the fire Department
My name is Jeff Sands, I am a 16-year employee of
Hudson Fire Department and I am the president of
the Professional Firefighters of Hudson, International
Association of Firefighters Local 3154. I wanted to take
a minute to shed some light on what has been going
with in your fire department.
First I want to thank all those who came out to vote
in March. The community came together and voted in
favor for a contract for our members that will see its first
cost of living increase in almost a decade. The members
are just seeing the 2 percent increase this month. On
average, your Firefighters, EMS Personnel, Emergency
Dispatchers and Fire Inspector are seeing $20 a week
more in their pay checks. Thank you again.
We have seen several comments in this paper about
your fire department and your Fire Chief. I need to
clear up a few things that have been written. The
Central Station renovation has been and is moving
along. Many of you know that even the best laid plans
run into problems. Problems are easy to overcome
when you alone make the decisions, but with an already
tight budget addressing problems means cuts to plans or
requesting additional money. These things take time to
deal with.
Running an organization, the size of ours, addressing
years of neglect of the departments buildings, vehicles,
equipment and personnel is not an easy task. The fire
chief has reversed the downward spiral this department
has been in for years. He is promoting a positive
work environment and giving everyone a voice in the
direction your department moves. Members are no
longer leaving for other departments at an alarming rate
as they were in the past. They are starting to get the
training they need to become better at their jobs, rather
than just the bare minimum. Trucks are getting fixed
when a problem is found instead of sitting out of service
and station maintenance issues are being looked at.
These things that have been neglected for years are now
being addressed.
Like any organization, not everyone will agree with
decisions and direction being taken, but in the years I
have been employed at Hudson Fire, I have never seen
the positive movement or the positive employee morale
that I see today. Change is not always easy and takes
time. Please take the time to let your elected officials
know you support your fire department and your fire
chief in providing the best possible service to you, the
citizens of Hudson. The Selectmens office is located
on the main level of Town Hall at 12 School St. To
correspond with them via e-mail use the address BOS@
hudsonnh.gov or call the Administration Department at
886-6000, ext. 0.
Please feel free to contact me with any comments,
questions or concerns: 886-6021.

Someone who Appreciates

Irony and Satire
A few comments: I really enjoy the Remember
Hudson When column. It would be even more
appealing if it were Hudson Then and Now with
photographs of the current sites, for people like me with
limited recollection facilities.
Someone should inform the folk at Coldwell Banker
that emeritus can be predicated only of a male. (Re.
Column: Realtor emeritus bestowed on Lorraine
DeMincio.) The correct term for a female is emerita.
(Of course, Nowadays with all the confusion over
sex we may have to resurrect the Latin neuter form
emeritum.)
Finally to those who dislike Nicoles All About Me
column (which I happen to love) a word of advice:
Dont read it. No one is holding a gun to your head
and forcing you to. Personally I feel sorry for people
who cant appreciate good old fashioned irony, sarcasm,
satire, mockery, wit, and jibe.

We the People
must Move out of the Dark
We the People ... Wow, that is very strong
and does it happen in Hudson and anywhere
in New Hampshire? As an elected state
representative becomes the honorable, we call
the House of Representatives the General Court.
Now dont get me wrong, we did elect them
and have the opportunity to un-elect them in a
primary in September this year and a general
election in November, yes the same election,
where we the people will vote for a president.
Remember the word is vote, elect was not used
as the Electoral College has the final power.
This isnt anything but old news, but what
started the thinking was this. Once again, the last
meeting of the Hudson Board of Selectmen for
FY 2016, was in June. July marks the new fiscal
year. The new budget
(or maybe we should
call it the approved
spending cycle) or
maybe even better
a new pot of money
has been granted to
the town to operate
the government (not
saying our government).
Starting to feel disenfranchised? Join the club.
The only way to change that is to be involved,
volunteer or, better, run for an office, be an
elected official, almost as good as being an
honorable. By the way, is it too late to run for
one of those seats? Unfortunately, the deadline
to sign up was in the beginning of June. Sorry,
the wheels spun off, back on track. You are part
of our government, like it or not, go speak to our
selectmen in public input during their meetings.
That way your ideas and opinions are on the
record. Speaking with them privately might
make you feel better about your concerns, but
what will they do with your thoughts? Standing
up and being on the record is a start to a stronger
town for (we the people).
Lets switch gears now. The fire department
is renovating the 50-year-old Leonard Smith
Central Fire Station. Yes, we (the people) voted
to slot $900,000 to do the project back in March
of 2015. At that time the chief had a thumbnail
sketch of $1.2 million for the project, but the
town fathers (a name one selectman refers to
the selectmen quite often) made a decision to
only put $900,000 on the ballot so that we the
people would pass the warrant. That is their
job and as long as they reviewed the facts (cost

Editorial

projections and scope of work, or asked a town

employee to do it that truly is all we can ask).
As the design phase and the construction costs
started to come in this spring (2016 a year later)
there had to be compromising. It will still (just
guessing) extend the useful life of that building
and provide a better working environment for our
firefighters.
But why couldnt the project be built to the
best it can be? What are we sacrificing as the
monies approved were less than what was truly
needed? Will we lose a better and safer second
exit from the second floor, substitute a different
door for the engine bays, or cut other corners that
we the people just wont know about?
Now here is the real rub. Anyone involved
with the fire
department over the
years knew that there
was duct work in the
attic of the station
that was wrapped
in Tyvek material
as asbestos was the
primary insulation
used on pipes and ducts (before we knew about
mesothelioma). Twenty-two thousand dollars
to have it removed, with what is known about
asbestos is a good thing, but it also had to be
applied toward the $900,000.
Thank you again, town fathers (knowing the
other shoe has not dropped). Somehow the town
fathers can find in the budget and spend $94,000
(yes $94,000), not $86,000, for the paving the
parking lot at Benson Park. This is no disparity on
Benson Park, as it has become an asset to many
people (did not say Hudson residents, did not say
southern New Hampshire residents, just many
people).
Back to the town fathers. Do they have a plan
for our town or do we just shoot from the hip
when an idea comes up? The we the people
never were asked to vote on the paving or many
of the other expenses of the park. As for the
many great people who have volunteered to
make the park the great place it is today, this
is not reflection on them but a question for the
town fathersWhy are the leaders of the town of
Hudson only reactionaries without a strategy for
the future?
What is more important --a fire station lasting
into 2056 or a parking lot with a 15-year life span
at best?

St. Joseph Hospital Earns Re-Designation as Trauma Center

submitted by St. Joseph Hospital
St. Joseph Hospital has received re-designation
as a Level III Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center by
the New Hampshire State Trauma Medical Review
Committee.
As one of the original hospitals designated
by the State of New Hampshire as a trauma
center in the mid 1990s, St. Joseph Hospital has
provided trauma care for the city of Nashua and
surrounding communities for over twenty years.
The hospital provides comprehensive emergency
care 24-hours a day and has available resources
to provide for emergency resuscitation, general,

vascular, spine and orthopedic surgery, and

intensive care services for critically injured trauma
patients.
Our community deserves to have the best
emergency and trauma care close to where we
live and work. That is why it is important for
St. Joseph Hospital to continue to maintain our
Trauma Center status, says Kayleigh Farrell, BSN,
RN, CEN, Trauma Program Coordinator at St.
Joseph Hospital. Our trauma certified nurses
work with our highly skilled emergency medicine
doctors and surgeons to ensure that we provide
safe, quality emergency and trauma care

24 hours a day.
In the recertification process, Dr. Peter Hedberg,
of the New Hampshire Trauma Medical Review
Committee recognized that St. Joseph Hospital
has a well defined and mature trauma program
with areas of excellence including the newly
built emergency department, injury prevention
programs, collaborative relationships with local
EMS services and dedicated and knowledgeable
trauma team members.
The Emergency Department has a
multidisciplinary team of clinicians specifically
trained to respond to trauma situations.

Our surgeons, in collaboration with emergency

department physicians and nurses, coordinate the
care of the trauma patient. In addition, St. Joseph
Hospital has developed partnerships with facilities
including Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in
Burlington, Mass., and Boston trauma hospitals
when advanced trauma care is needed.

Hospital Emergency Department and Trauma
Center visit www.stjosephhospital.com/

Detailing Hudson Encumbrances

by Len Lathrop
Municipal government is a business with a lot of rules and procedures. One of those is that, at the end
of the fiscal year, the books of the town and the school board close. Often there are things, for lack of a
better word, that have been purchased and not received or contracts for work that has not started or been
completed.
This is where, with the bottom line nature of SB2 form of government, funds in a line account of the
approved budget can be reallocated for a different purpose. Any funds that have not been spent by June
30 of every year or encumbered by the governing body must be returned to the general fund on the town
side and to the taxpayer on the school side of the government. Not to mislead anyone, you wont get a
check from the school district that says we did not spend this much so here it is. Instead, how it works
is the amount that will be requested from you in your tax bill will be less the amount not spent.
Following is the list from the town:

While the paper

staff celebrated the
July 4th holiday
the Fox was busy
scampering around
town. But first an
announcement:
effective July 25, the
Area News Group
has a new home; the
new address is One
Campbell Avenue.
While the address
may not be familiar to everyone, most will know the building. When you are returning from Nashua on
Ferry Street and you see the Welcome to Hudson sign, behind that sign is a green office building that is
One Campbell Ave.; we will be on the first floor. There will be honor boxes in the parking lot for our
readers to pick up extra copies of the Hudson~Litchfield News.
Now, the Foxs questions of the week, and yes, there are always questions (maybe they should be
called concerns or things to think about).
1)Can the chairman of the school board second a motion without stepping down from the
chairmanship? Should both governing boards follow Roberts Rules and to what extent? And just for the
record, Chairman Langlais was excused from that meeting.
2) While the Hudson Board of Selectmen voted on encumbrances, did the Fox just miss the school
board doing that? Is that a possibility?
3)Moving on ... At the first selectmens meeting the budget that just started on July 1 was adjusted
for more money for IT staffing. Just a thinking point. What happened in inspection services where
cameras are going to be installed to watch the counter area and the phone will be recorded for customer
service quality assurance and finally Department Heads will be notified that non-Inspectional Services
personnel will not interrupt the permit process?
4)Lastly, for this edition, do
we have different departments
in our small town duplicating
services? Examples - Zumba
Gold classes at the library for
seniors citizens and Nashua
Silver Knights players offering
baseball skills and tips.
5)And finally, why did the
Board of Selectmen member
page of the town website
change? The Fox remembers
when individual e-mails and
phone numbers were listed
there; now it is just a blue
line to be clicked on. Just a
question to end the scampering
around.

Whats in Your Well Water?

The Next Step
by Kaylee Murphy
The New Hampshire Department of Health
and Human Services, as well as the Department
of Environmental Services, will host a meeting at
Campbell High Schools auditorium on Tuesday,
July 19 at 7 p.m. The purpose of this meeting
is for DHHS to inform private well owners who
have consumed water that had above 70 parts per
trillion of perfluorochemicals, perfluorooctanoic
acid, and or perfluorooctane sulfonate about the

blood testing process. NHDES will be providing

an overview of the overall PFC investigation as
well as various long-term water solutions. Signups
for blood testing will most likely begin in mid-July.
This meeting is not just for Litchfield residents,
but also for residents in neighboring towns whose
private wells have been contaminated above 70
ppt with registered PFOA and/or PFOS levels
above 70 ppt. This includes residents of Amherst,
Bedford, Manchester and Merrimack.

The reconstruction and resurfacing of Webster

Street between Ferry Street and Elm Avenue is
taking place. The road is 6,770 feet long and
26 feet wide. This year Brox Paving will place a
binder (base) coat, 2,350 tons of asphalt, at a cost
of $185,133. After it settles for a year, a top coat
will be applied next year for a cost of $80,000.
These costs do not include the town highway

department staff that connect the driveways, fill

and take care of the lawns and manholes.
Fun Fact: In 1998, Webster Street was the
first road that was reclaimed by Kevin Burns as
Hudson Road Agent. Burns today, with a chuckle,
said, When it {Webster Street] needs to be done
again I will not be doing it as it should last for 20
years.

Hudson 9U Travel Baseball Achieves Summer Success

submitted by Todd Crawford

The Hudson 9-and-under summer travel baseball team has been
quite busy so far this summer, playing 17 games in the first 23 days
of their schedule.
They opened the summer in the Tyngsboro tournament,
where they defeated teams from Nashua, Lowell, Pepperell and
Londonderry, before falling to the Groton-Dunstable team in
the tournament semi-finals. From there they moved on to the
Londonderry tournament, where they lost to Seacoast before
defeating Dracut and Tyngsboro to make the tournament semifinals. They then defeated Dover in the semi-finals before falling to
Seacoast in the tournament championship. After that, they began
the East Area tournament in Rochester, in the hopes of doing well
enough to qualify for the state tournament.
A 4-1 loss to Exeter in the opening game of the double-elimination
tournament quickly put them in a hole and it was suddenly an uphill
battle to qualify for states. But consecutive wins over Stratham
and perennial powerhouses Dover and Seacoast clinched a spot in
the big dance. They continued on by defeating Exeter and then
Quintown to reach the tournament championship game against
Londonderry. Of note is that their consecutive eliminations of
Dover, Seacoast and Exeter ensured that one of those three teams
would not win the East Area tournament for the first time since 2004.
After securing an early 8-2 lead in the championship game, things
fell apart for the boys in the fourth inning as Londonderry scored
eight runs and never looked back in a 12-8 victory.

However, the runner-up finish in the East Area tournament secured a

Being a family-owned, three-generation business is important to us here at the

Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home. This emphasis was set from its beginning in 1949 when
Leo A. Dumont, Sr. founded the funeral home with a code of

Trust, Respect, & Personal Care.

Our History

Leo, Sr. an alumnus of Nashua High School, served in World War II as a Staff
Sergeant in the Army Medical Corps from 1942-1945. Upon his return home,
he went to Boston, MA and attended New England Institute of Anatomy and
Mortuary Science (NEI) where he received his diploma in Funeral Directing
and Embalming. In 1949, at his residence on Ferry St., in Hudson, NH he
constructed a funeral home. The Leo A. Dumont Funeral Home proved to be a
personal success as well as a success to the community. In 1967, another
Leo A. Dumont Funeral Home was established on Kinsley St., in Nashua, NH.
It would remain there until 1978.
Many changes took place between 1972-1979. With confidence and support
from his wife Theresa, an addition was built to the Ferry St. location. The
Nashua location was sold and the Sullivan Brothers Funeral Home on Spring St. in Nashua was purchased. With this new
venture brought about needed help. Who better then Leo, Sr.'s son. Leo A. Dumont, Jr., a graduate of Alvirne High School and
1967 graduate of NEI, joined with his father in 1969. The two worked hand in hand for many years together.
The 1980s and 90s brought about even more changes to the
funeral homes. The construction of a new County Court House in
Nashua forced yet another move for the Nashua funeral home.
A new location of 370 Main St. was found. Renovations of a
former boarding house began and a new combined name for
both the Hudson and Nashua homes was erected. The DumontSullivan Funeral Home, now with one combined name, continues
to have two convenient locations to better serve the community.
As the new
millennium came,
High top tables to enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
Leo A. Dumont III
opted to join the family business. He is a 1993 graduate of Bishop Guertin High
School, a 1997 graduate of St. Joseph's College, and a 2000 graduate of NEI. With
the passing of Leo., Sr. in 2000 and the new perspectives of Leo III, a major
renovation and construction project took place at the Hudson facility. In 2003,
changes to the facility allowed for families to relax in the comfort of a lounge area
and we introduced the areas first children's room and DVD Tribute program. In
2007, an eager young apprentice named Kade Stewart was hired. Becoming a full
time licensed director in 2008, Kade has been a true asset in assisting local
families as well as an integral part of the daily operations at the funeral home.
Now, in 2016,
with Leo III as the
third generation
owner of the
funeral home, our newest renovation is complete. An 850
square foot coffee lounge, open to all families and their guests
during service times. Offering the highest quality Starbucks
Coffee, as well as nearly 100 premium cold beverages and
snacks including a variety of cookies, pastries, and muffins.
Our new lounge offers family and friends a place to enjoy a
refreshment and share memories of their loved one in a
comfortable, modern atmosphere.
Fresh cookies and pastries for guests to enjoy, nearly 100
cold premium beverages including iced frappuccinos,
seltzers, sodas and juices.

A casual seating area with a charging station for mobile devices.

With nearly 70 years of being a family-owned business, we have seen a lot of changes.
However, with all that has changed since 1949, one thing remains the same; the code of
Trust, Respect and Personal Care.
