Hymn of Praise

VeRSe 1

God of freedom, God of justice,

You whose love is strong as death,
You who saw the dark of person,
You who knew the price of faith;
Touch our world of sad oppression
With your spirits healing breath.
Touch our world of sad oppression
With your spirits healing breath.

VeRSe 2

Rid the earth of tortures terror,

You whose hands were nailed to wood;
Hear the cries of pain and protest,
You who shed the tears and blood;
Move in us the power of pity
Restless for the common good.
Move in us the power of pity
Restless for the common good.

VeRSe 3

Make in us a captive conscience,

Quick to hear, to act, to plead;
Make us truly sisters,
Brothers of whatever race or creed;
Teach us to be fully human,
Open to each others need.
Teach us to be fully human,
Open to each others need.

7:30 A.M.

LUke 10:25-37 (CeB)

A legal expert stood up to test Jesus.
Teacher, he said, what must I do to
gain eternal life? 26Jesus replied, What is
written in the Law? How do you interpret
it? 27He responded, You must love the
Lord your God with all your heart, with
all your being, with all your strength, and
with all your mind, and love your neighbor
as yourself. 28Jesus said to him, You have
answered correctly. Do this and you will
live.
25

But the legal expert wanted to prove that

he was right, so he said to Jesus, And who
is my neighbor? 30Jesus replied, A man
went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. He
encountered thieves, who stripped him
naked, beat him up, and left him near death.
31
Now it just so happened that a priest was
also going down the same road. When he
saw the injured man, he crossed over to the
other side of the road and went on his way.
32
Likewise, a Levite came by that spot, saw
the injured man, and crossed over to the
other side of the road and went on his way.
33
A Samaritan, who was on a journey, came
to where the man was. But when he saw
him, he was moved with compassion. 34The
Samaritan went to him and bandaged his
wounds, tending them with oil and wine.
Then he placed the wounded man on his
own donkey, took him to an inn, and took

full days worth of wages and gave them to
the innkeeper. He said, Take care of him,
and when I return, I will pay you back for
any additional costs. 36What do you think?
Which one of these three was a neighbor
to the man who encountered thieves?
37
Then the legal expert said, The one who
demonstrated mercy toward him. Jesus
told him, Go and do likewise.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down,

yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
2
We hanged our harps upon the willows
in the midst thereof. 3For there they that

us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs

and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the
top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held
up his hands, the Israelites were winning,
but whenever he lowered his hands, the
Amalekites were winning. 12When Moses
hands grew tired, they took a stone and
put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron
and Hur held his hands upone on one
side, one on the otherso that his hands
remained steady till sunset. 13So Joshua
overcame the Amalekite army with the
sword. 14Then the Lord said to Moses,
Write this on a scroll as something to be
remembered and make sure that Joshua
hears it, because I will completely blot out
the name of Amalek from under heaven.
Moses built an altar and called it The
Lord is my Banner. 16He said, Because
hands were lifted up against the throne
of the Lord, the Lord will be at war
against the Amalekites from generation to
generation.

A Litany for Those Who Aren't Ready for Healing

Minister:

We, the village of Trinity United Church of Christ, affirm the humanity
of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, and the five police officers gunned
down in Dallas, Texas. We mourn the loss of their lives and remember
the families who stand in need of our love, support, and prayers.
Let us not rush to the language of healing before understanding
the fullness of the injury and the depth of the wound.

Response:

God, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Minister:

Let us not rush to offer a band-aid, when the gaping wound requires
surgery and complete reconstruction.

Response:

God, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Minister:

Let us not speak of reconciliation without speaking of reparations and

restoration, or how we can repair the breach and how we can restore the
loss. Let us not rush past the loss of this mothers child, this fathers child
... someones beloved son.

Response:

God, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Minister:

Let us not value property over people; let us not protect material objects
while human lives hang in the balance.

Response:

God, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Minister:

Let us not value a false peace over a righteous justice. Let us not be
afraid to sit with the ugliness, the messiness, and the pain that is life in
community together.

Response:

God, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Minister:

Let us mourn black and brown men and women, those killed extra
judicially every 28 hours.

Response:

Let it be so.

A Litany for Those Who Aren't Ready for Healing

Let us weep at a criminal justice system, which is neither blind nor just.

Response:

Let it be so.

Minister:

Let us be humble and listen to the pain, rage, and grief pouring from the
lips of our neighbors and friends.

Response:

Let it be so.

Minister:

So, God, in Your mercy

All:

Show me my own complicity in injustice. Convict me for my indifference.

Forgive me when I have remained silent. Equip me with a zeal for
righteousness. Never let me grow accustomed or acclimated to
unrighteousness. Amen.

To Do Justice
Community Control of our Communitys Safety
Who polices the police? This has been a critical question in our communities for far too long. We have
witnessed too many circumstances of police misconduct that is met with a wall of silence, misrepresentation,
damaged lives, and even death. Rarely do we see justice served, even in the case of egregious circumstances
like the reign of torture led by police commander Jon Burge. Our people are hurting, both physically and
psychologically, and adding insult to these injuries, the city ends up paying millions of dollars in settlements
over $521 million since 2004 money that should be going to develop our neighborhoods.
Trinity UCC has joined the fight led by the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR)
for an elected Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC). The key provisions in this proposed legislation
include:
A strong prosecutorial component CPAC may petition the Chief Judge of the U.S. District
Court to allow criminal charges before a sitting Grand Jury when police commit a crime such as
battery, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, torture, rape, and murder when committed by police
officers. Illinois has abolished the death penalty. It should strive to abolish the arbitrary use of
deadly force by police
Highlights of the draft legislation:

Establish an elected CPAC over the Chicago Police Department. It shall have the authority to:
o Appoint the Superintendent of Police
o Re-write the police rule book, including all use of force guidelines, Standard Operating
Procedures, Rules, and General Orders
o Investigate police misconduct with an anticipated increase in rates at which complaints
are sustained based on thorough investigations of all allegations and violations of the U.S.
Constitution and Human Rights law
o Investigate all police shootings, including all police-involved shootings that kill unarmed people
o Provide increased transparency of all investigations, including police involved shootings, and
greater statistical analysis of demographic information of complaints by type and victim
o Increase rates at which complaints are sustained based on thorough investigations of all
allegations of police misconduct and violations of the U.S. Constitution and Human Rights law
o Be the final authority regarding discipline in the Chicago Police Department
o Indict police officers for crimes they commit
o Establish its own budget:
o CPAC will replace the current Police Board and take over the job of the Independent

Police Review Authority

o CPAC will reduce bias and guarantee fair treatment of victims of police misconduct
o CPAC will be elected by Police District and will have racially and ethnically equitable

and proportional representation from each district

Joy in the Land
In the history of the League Finals, no NBA team has
ever come back from a 3-games-to-1 deficit to win a
championship. Until now

As we celebrate (with little fanfare) the 100-year

anniversary of the Great Migration, where millions of Blacks came to the north seeking
opportunities to prosper and raise families, this is quite a reflective moment. Despite
all of the redlining, blatant racial discrimination, violence, and social injustices they
endured, what they accomplished was nothing short of remarkable. Yet today, the
dramatic irony lies in the fact that African Americans are leaving Chicago in droves,
headed back south (in many instances, the south suburbs) seeking the same things
(safety, quality education, economic opportunity) that we sought a century ago.
The truth is that our predecessors were right all along. There is indeed gold beneath
our feet and as a member organization of Trinity United Church of Christ, the Endeleo
Institute is driven to mine it. Of course, it takes time; but we pray that some of the
amazing talent weve witnessed at Trinity UCC and Endeleo comes home after college
to start a family or open a business. The Washington Heights community is a blank
canvas, poised for growth and ready to become a beacon on the Far South Side of
Chicago.
Call it a cavalier attitude but we know who we serve. Besides, weve got a guy from
Ohio leading us too.
