Beginner 1 Final Study Guide Part I: Religion and

Understanding
I.

Our Identity
a. Islam is our religion
b. We are all Muslims
c. When we greet someone we say: Assalamu
Alaikoum (peace be upon you)
i. They will respond with: Wa-Alaikoum
Assalam (and peace be upon you)
d. Before we do something, we say: BismillallahiAr- Rahmani- Ar- Rahim (In the Name of Allah,
the Most Merciful, the Most Kind)
II. Our Belief
a. We believe that there is no God but Allah (swt)
i. After the name of Allah, we write: SubhanaHou- Wa- Taala (Allah is Glorified)
b. Muhammad is the final messenger of allah
i. After his name, we write: Salla- AllahuAlaihi- Wa- Salam (May the blessings of
Allah (swt) be upon him
III. Allahs Oneness
a. Allah (swt) is our creator
b. We believe that he has made everything
c. Allah knows everything
i. He is called Al-Alim (The All-Knowing)
d. Allah (swt) has all the power
i. He is called Al-Qawi (The All-Powerful)
e. Allah (swt) has 99 names that He is recognized
for
IV. Pillars of Islam
a.The Pillars of Islam tell us what we need to do to
be Muslims

V.

1. Shahadah: Belief that there is no God


but Allah (swt) and Muhammed (pbuh)
is His messenger.
2. Salat: Praying 5 times a day
3. Zakat: Giving money to the poor
4. Sawm: Fasting the month of Ramadan
5. Hajj: Pilgrimage from Mecca to Medina.
Salat (Prayer)
a. As a muslim, we pray to Allah (swt) 5 times a
day
b. Each prayer is performed at a different time.
c. The direction we face is the Kilbah which is the
Kaba
d. Before we pray, we must have wudu
e. We must be clean and dress nicely when having
our meeting with Allah (swt)
f. Steps for completing a prayer (The first
Raqaah)
1. Takbir: Saying Allahu Akbar
a. Place hands on chest or bellybutton
(Qiyam)
2. Recite surat Al-Fatiha and a surah
3. Ruku: Bend down to your knees and
recite Subhana Rabbiya-l-Atheam (3
times)
4. Stand up and say Sami Allahou Liman
Hamidah, Rabbana wa laka-l- Hamd
5. Sujud: Bend to the floor so that your
forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes
are the only things touching the floor.
Say Subhana Rabbiyal Ala (3 times)

6. Jalsah: Sitting down with your hands on


your knees Allahu Akbar
7. Sujud again
8. Qiyam starts the second Raqaah
g.The steps of wudu
1. Make intention that you are about to
make wudu
2. Wash hands 3 times (Make sure you
wash between your fingers)
3. Rinse mouth 3 times
4. Wipe nose 3 times
5. Wash face 3 times (make sure you wet
your whole face)
6. Wash arms 3 times (up to elbow and
starting with your right arm)
7. Wipe hair 1 time
8. Wash ears 1 times
9. Wash feet 3 times (up to ankle and
starting with your right foot. Make sure
you wash between your toes)
h.The five prayers are:
1. Fajr
a. Has 2 Raqaats
b. We pray it before sunrise
2. Duhr
a. Has 4 Raqaats
b. We pray it in the early afternoon
3. Asr
a. Has 4 Raqaats
b. We pray it in the late afternoon
4. Magrib
a. Has 3 Raqaats
b. We pray it soon after sunset

5. Isha
a. Has 4 Raqaats
b. We pray it in the evening
VI. Prophets
a. Prophet Adam
i. First man on Earth
ii. Was tricked by Shaitan into eating fruit from
tree
iii. Sent to Earth with wife, Hawa, as a form of
punishment
b. Prophet Nuh
i. Tried to convice people to convert to Islam
but they all didnt listen
ii. Allah (swt) told him to create a ship and put
animals and believers in it
iii. All others drowned in a large storm as a
form of punishment
c. Prophet Ibrahim
i. Had a dream to kill his son and he thought it
was a nightmare
ii. After the dream kept on repeating, he
decided it was true. He dressed his son up
and took him to a field to kill him.
iii. Just as he was about to kill him, Allah (swt)
sent a sheep in its place for Ibrahim to kill.
iv. We celebrate Eid Ul-Adha because of this.
d. Prophet Yunus
i. After the people stopped listening to him, he
decided he would leave the city without
Allahs (swt) permission.
ii. He went on a boat and there was a huge
storm. Everyone got rid of everything but

the boat was still heavy so they had to


throw someone out.
iii. They did a lottery and every time, Prophet
Yunus name was picked. It showed that he
was destined to go.
iv. There was a large fish waiting to swallow
him when he jumped into the water. He
stayed there for 40 days asking Allah (swt)
for forgiveness.
e. Prophet Yusuf
i. He was the youngest out of 12 siblings and
his father, also a prophet, loved him the
most.
ii. One day, his brothers come up with a plan
to make it seem that Yusuf was killed. They
throw him in a well and come home with
Yusufs shirt and they lied about an animal
eating him.
