PierreJeanDavid(March12,1788January4,1856)wasaFrench
sculptorandmedallist.HeadoptedthenameDavidd'Angers,following
hisentryintothestudioofthepainterJacquesLouisDavidin1809asa
wayofbothexpressinghispatrimonyanddistinguishinghimselffrom
themasterpainter.
HewasborninAngersin1788.Hisfatherwasawoodcarverand
ornamentalsculptor,whohadjoinedthevolunteerRepublicanarmyasa
musketeer,fightingagainsttheChouansofLaVende.Hestudiedinthe
studioofJeanJacquesDelusseandin1808traveledtoParistostudyin
thestudioofPhilippeLaurentRoland.WhileinParishedidworkboth
ontheArcdeTriompheandtheexterioroftheLouvre.In1810he
succeededintakingthesecondplaceprizeatthecoledesBeauxArts
forhisOthryades.In1811David'sLaDouleurwonthecole's
competitionfortted'expressionfollowedbyhistakingofthePrixde
RomeforhisEpaminondasinthesameyear.Hespentfiveyearsin
Rome,duringwhichtimehefrequentedthestudioofAntonioCanova
andmadesmalltripsaroundItalytoVenice,NaplesandFlorence.
ReturningfromRomearoundthetimeoftherestorationoftheBourbons
andtheiraccompanyingforeignconquerorsandreturnedroyalists,David
d'AngerswouldnotremainintheneighborhoodoftheTuileries,opting
insteadtotraveltoLondon.HereJohnFlaxmanandotherstookhimto
taskforthepoliticalsinsofDavidthepainter,towhomhewas
erroneouslysupposedtoberelated.Withgreatdifficultyhemadehis
waytoParisagain,whereacomparativelyprosperouscareeropened
beforehim.Hismedallionsandbustswereinmuchrequest,aswellas
ordersformonumentalworks.Oneofthemostfamousofthesewasthat
ofGutenbergatStrassburgbutthosehehimselfvaluedmostwerethe
statueofBarra(JosephBara),adrummerboywhopurportedly
continuedtobeathisdrumuntilthemomentofdeathinthewarinLa
Vende,andthemonumenttotheGreekliberatorMarkosBotsaris.
David'sbustsandmedallionswereverynumerous,andamonghissitters
maybefoundnotonlytheillustriousmenandwomenofFrance,but
manyothersbothofEnglandandGermanycountrieswhichhevisited
professionallyin1827and1829.Hismedallionsnumberover500.

David'sfamerestsfirmlyonhispedimentofthePantheon,hismarble
WoundedPhilopoemenintheLouvreandhisequestrianmonumenttoGeneralJacquesNicolasGobert
inPreLachaiseCemetery.InadditiontothatofGobert,hedidsculpturesforsevenothertombsatPre
Lachaise,includingthebronzebustsofthewriter,HonordeBalzacandphysicianSamuelHahnemann.
IntheMuseDavidinAngersisanalmostcompletecollectionofhisworkseitherintheformofcopies
orintheoriginalmoulds.Asanexampleofhisbenevolenceofcharactermaybementionedhisrushing
offtothesickbedofRougetdeLisle,theauthoroftheMarseillaiseHymn,modellingandcarvinghimin
marblewithoutdelay,makingalotteryofthework,andsendingtothepoetintheextremityofneedthe
proceeds.
