Industrial engineering is the faction of engineering that focuses on process improvement through
the management of people, operations and technology. To maximize efficiency, industrial
engineers carefully study the product requirements, design manufacturing and information
systems to meet those requirements with the help of mathematical models. There are three
objectives for which companies compete: cost, speed and quality. As manufacturing progresses
over time, different attributes become important. In the 1960s and 1970s, quality was the focal
point. In the 1980s, speed was the most important factor of manufacturing. A decade later, the
main issue was cost, all the while keeping a high level of quality and speed.
Throughout history different methods have been used to achieve each of these goals. Many of
these methods used can be considered a fad. A fad is a practice or interest followed for a time
with exaggerated zeal. Concepts such as Deming management, just in time or even Six Sigma
could all be considered fads depending on how they are implemented and sustained in an
organization. Quality, speed and cost are all important in manufacturing today, but now it is so
competitive that other standards have surfaced. One very important standard in particular has
become a main concern and is known as green engineering (also known as environmentally
conscious manufacturing).
An emphasis on the environmental impacts due to production and waste generation has made its
way into everyday society. Consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious, and that
reflects on the companies from which they purchase. With the Earth's limited resources,
companies are more conscious of their carbon footprint, and there has been a movement to
create more environmentally friendly decisions. In being more environmentally conscious,
companies can experience cost reductions by using less and producing to a more efficient scale.
Through various points of industrial engineering applications, communities and industries can
create a proactive approach to reduce the impact to the environment.
Green engineering originated in the early 1970s when it was realized that there were high levels
of consumption and waste of products. Green engineering is the systems level approach to
product and process design where environmental attributes are treated as primary objectives or
opportunities rather than simple constraints. It emphasizes the legitimacy of environmental
objectives as consistent with the overall requirements of product quality and economy. As
manufacturing sectors and the human population grow, more waste is produced, more energy is
used and more products are needed. Lean manufacturing is the business model and collection of
tactical methods that emphasize eliminating non-value-added activities (waste) while delivering
quality products at lowest cost with greater efficiency. In conjunction, six goals of green
engineering are:
With these concepts in mind, lean manufacturing is a link to green engineering. Because the
need for environmentally conscious manufacturing is becoming increasingly important in our
lives.
GLOSSARY
Deming Management: It aims to honor the memory of Deming, as the ideologist who
inspired the transformation of post-war Japanese industry to restore to this nation its
place among the world powers. This management model aims to encourage
companies to continue to improve and competing to achieve continuous quality
improvement.
Just-In-Time: is a methodology aimed primarily at reducing flow times within production
as well as response times from suppliers to customers.
Six Sigma: Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of the output of a process by
identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing variability in
manufacturing and business processes.
Green Engineering: Green engineering approaches the design of products and
processes by applying financially and technologically feasible processes and products
in a manner that simultaneously decreases the amount of pollution
Environmental Impacts: The environmental impact is the effect of human activity on the
environment.
Carbon Footprint: A carbon footprint is historically defined as the total set of
greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, event, organisation,
product,expressed as CO2.
Purchase: Acquiring one thing in exchange for money.
Proactive Approach: Acting in advance to deal with an expected difficulty, thus a
proactive approac is an anticipatory approach.
Lean Manufacturing: is a systematic method for the elimination of waste within a
manufacturing system.
Non-Value-Added: is a management term loosely related to the Lean Manufacturing
movement as codified in the 1980s by a landmark study of the automobile industry.
Hazardous Materials:
GLOSARIO
proveedores a clientes.
Green Engineering: Ingeniera Ecolgica.
contaminacin.
Environmental Impacts: Impacto Ambiental.
Purchase: v. Comprar. 2 s. Compra. Adquirir una cosa a cambio de dinero.
Proactive Approach: enfoque proactivo.
Overall Requirements: requisitos globales
Human Population: poblacin humana
Tactical Methods: mtodos tcticos
