Bearing the sobriquet The Jewel of the East Coast, the port town of Visakhapatnam is located

History of Visakhapatnam
The city is mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata as a city that was once roamed by
Rama and Lakshman in search of Sita, Ramas wife. The Mahabharata says that Bakasura, the
evil demon was killed in a place close to Visakhapatnam by Bheema.
Visakhapatnam was also home to Buddhism in the early history of India under the Kalingas and
King Asoka, one of the most important kings of Indian history. The city was also under the rulers
of Vengi, Chalukya, Chola, Ganga, Pallava and the Gajapathi dynasty. Vishakapatnam was

English East India Company.

cultural programmes being the main crowd pullers.
A famous event in Vishakapatnam is Chandanotsavam. Also known as the Chandana Yatra, it
is an annual festival which will be held on 24th April 2012, at Sri Varaha Laxmi Narasimha
Temple in Simhachalam. The deity inside is covered with sandalwood paste and on this day, the
existing layer is removed and a fresh layer of sandalwood paste is applied. Four layers of
sandalwood paste are applied and the first layer is applied after 9:00 pm on the day of Akshaya
Tritiya. This is the one day that devotees get to see the god in its original form.

Featured review about Visakhapatnam

Amazing nature with awesome atmosphere
"I visited this city in the month of January. It is the best time to visit this city. The average
temperature range is 16 to 29 which is quite comfortable. In fact I wanted to spare some time
with my family away from Delhi's winter. The city is a located on the east coastal side of bay of
Bengal. The effect of last year's flood in the month of December were easily seen every where.
All roads and public places were being renovated at a very large scale. The second reason of
choosing this place was that I want to see the Festival Pongal from inside of the people. The city
is full of beaches which are considered as the best beaches of world. May it be world famous
RK beach Yaradda beach Bheemili beach Sagar beach or Rishikonda Beach all are very
beautiful. Other places to visit are light house shooting spot hilltop view Simachala Temple Kali
temple Dutch Cemetery Totalakonta (a very beautiful place of old Buddha destiny famous
Ramanaidu studio zoo park Red sand hills mursarlova park Tenneti park VUDA park and the
most beautiful Kailasgiri. Visakha museum submarine museum matsya darshini and fishing
harbour boating are other attractions of the city. The most exciting day of my visit was the visit
of Araku valley. It was a long way about 3 hours journey of viewing beautiful landscapes and
mountains and the nature's original beauty. It was very the wonderful excitement to see the
world famous Borra caves which are the largest and deepest original caves in the world.
Padmapuram garden coffee house damku view point Galikonda view point tyda jungle bells and
visit in coffee garden are the other attraction of this day. In all it was a wonderful visit and full
paisa vasool visit." - V.s. Malik, Delhi, 2 days ago

Visit for beaches as family retreat

"Visakhapatnam City is a Port City and a buzzing industrial place too. Best place for tourists to
visit round the year. People are friendly and generally honest. Cabs are a little costly & fleecing
forcing many to opt for Auto Rickshaws to reach places in city.
Andhra Pradesh State Government now plans to make it a Tourist Hub enhancing the city's
amenities. There are plenty of very good and clean beaches around (including beaches not
frequented by many like the one behind BHPV), cold places like Paderu in a safe forest, much
Page 4/13

publicised Borra caves, Araku Valley near by.

Friendly Police (conspicuously present at this place), reasonably priced food and stay make it
tourist friendly. Though ours is a family visit, we write as an advice. The city is well connected by
train and bus from all corners of the country. An international Airport in the city centre is another
asset to Vizag the popular name the city is also known." - Nimmakayala v r naidu , , 3

Vizag & Araku- perfect combination of sea beach & hill station
"Must visit: Yarada beach, Teniti park, Rishikonda, Arakku, and Borra Caves,
Food and Shopping: Unfortunately I could not find good quality street food near the sea
beaches. (RK beach evening time, and Rishikonda in day time) No food is available in Yarada
Beach, so pack food for there. Otherwise food is cheap and good. A must try is the Bamboo
Chicken of Arakku near the Tribal Museam, Local coffee in the coffee garden in Arakku is
worthy.
Activities: The Rishikonda beach offers some activities and others don't. But only for the
beginners those will be enjoyable. Since I could not enjoy the speed boating there, and found it
too expensive than the experience. Its Rs. 250/-. About safety, its all in your hand. The life
jackets are years old and torn as well.
Advice:
1. If you want to enjoy the sea beach spend half a day, in Rishikonda beach.
2. Yarada is simply excellent, but don't try to swim there. Its risky. For a Yarada and Dolphins
Nose trip, better to keep a whole afternoon with packed lunch and booked cab. ( Steep rise in
hill, so better to go with a cab rather than auto)
3. While planning for Arakku and borra caves trip, try to go by train. The train route has almost
50 tunnels in its way. The train arrives in the station at 6. 30 a. M. Take a left seat that time, or
later when it will finally start, take a right sided seat. Its a must to seat in the proper side, to enjoy
the trip. All the views are in that side.
4. Try to come back from Borra caves to Vizag by train (5. 30 pm). Because the no of buses are
less and highly crowded. If you miss the train, then you can come down to S. Kota by hiring auto
or cab, ( at the max Rs. 500/-) from where you will get plenty of buses to Vizag every 15 mins
and up to 8. 30 pm.
5. Negotiate properly with auto's of Vizag. They ask for very high charge and try to carry GPS to
know the distance of your destiny before booking an auto to negotiate properly." Subhabrata mukhopadhyay , Hyderabad, 3 weeks ago

Different types of beach & the colour of sea

"If you want to see beaches of different shape and size with the sea of different nature in one
place, then you must visit Vizag. The famous beaches are Bheemunipatnam Beach,
Rishikonda Beach, Ramakrishna Beach and the Yarada Beach. All are different. In my view,
Yarada beach is the best. Vizag is a popular tourist destination. Kailash Giri, Dolphins nose,
Zoo and Submarine Museum are tourist attractions. Travelers should also visit Simhachalam
Temple, which is located little away from Vizag. Vizag is also famous for its Port and Naval
Base. You can see both the places with permission of the authorities. On the way to Yarada
beach, you must visit the famous Light House on a hilltop. You can have a glimpse of Vizag city,
Port, beaches and the sea from the hilltop. Similar view is also available from Kailash Giri, you
should visit the same in the afternoon. Winter is the best time to visit Vizag." - Basab Ray

Best of beaches & major locations
"Amakrishna Beach, Visakhapatnam is a must inclusion in the list of Visakhapatnam tourist
attractions. Also known as the RK Beach, it lies at a distance of 5 Kilometers from the main city.
Developed and maintained by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority and Municipal
Corporation of Visakhapatnam, the Ramakrishna Beach pleases visitors of all preferences.
The RK Beach satisfies all classes of people with tastes ranging from water sports enthusiast to
a person seeking a lazy holiday. Ramakrishna Beach, Visakhapatnam, is also a popular picnic
site in Vizag. Several fine tourist spots surround the Ramakrishna Beach, like: The Aquarium,
The Kali Temple, Visakha Museum, Submarine Museum, The Water Memorial." - Veerababu
