The Westfield Leader and The Scotch Plains Fanwood TIMES

Thursday, August 18, 2005

Harold Merrill, Jr., 90, BOE President;

Distinguished Coach and Scout Leader
Harold Douglas Merrill, Jr. died
peacefully on Saturday, July 30, in
Meredith N.H., surrounded by immediate family. He was in his 90th
year and had fought the onset of old
age with great courage and success.
Born on October 6, 1915, in East
Concord, N.H. to Elizabeth Thomas
Nash and Harold Douglas Merrill,
Doug graduated from the University
of New Hampshire in 1937 with a
bachelors degree in civil engineering, and immediately took a position
with New Jersey Bell Telephone in
the Plant Division.
He married Ruth Feely in 1940,
and the couple lived in Westfield, N.J.
until their move in 1972 to a newly
created family farm they called
Peaceable Acres in Stanton, N.J.
All fondly remember the numerous
Turkey Day family reunions. Doug
loved most to be with his family.
The Merrills relocated to New
Hampshire in January 2002, living
closer to younger family members,
first in Exeter and most recently in
Meredith. Mr. Merrill, an Eagle Scout
at the young age of age 16, earned 44
of the 57 merit badges possible at the
time in only two years, and carried that
experience into his work as Cubmaster
of Cub Scout Pack No. 171.
He continued his vast experience
with the supervision of his twin grandsons as they each advanced in rank to
Life Scout, and did likewise with
younger grandsons Hunter and Wyatt.
Mr. Merrill was honored by the Boy
Scouts of America for his service and
received the Silver Beaver Award.
An ROTC graduate and reservist,
Mr. Merrill entered the service in late
1940 with the United States Army
Signal Corps. During his five years of
active duty, he held positions of responsibility for the East Coast early
warning system and for signal operations in the Saipan invasion in 1944 in
the Pacific Theater. He received the
Bronze Star for his service there.
Saipan was the first time that all
armed services communications for
an invasion were under a single point
of command. Mr. Merrill was promoted to Colonel in the Signal Corps
at age 29, making him the youngest
full colonel in the Pacific Theater at
the time.
After the end of World War II, he
continued on reserve status for 20
years. He returned to New Jersey Bell
Telephone Company and held positions as district manager in such locations as Newark, Bloomfield and the
Oranges. He retired from New Jersey
Bell in 1977.
He was a member of the Westfield
Board of Education from 1952 to
1958 a period of expansion for the
board serving as Vice President and
President of the board. During his
years on the board, he was responsible for overseeing the building of
Edison Junior High School, Washington and Jefferson elementary
schools, and the addition to Westfield
Senior High School. He received the
Bnai Brith Award from Temple
Emanu-El in Westfield in 1968.
Mr. Merrill was an active volunteer
at the Westfield First United Method-

ist Church, as head of the building

committee for Wesley Hall, and head
of the pastoral relations committee
for over 25 years. His involvement
with Camp Brett Endeavor began in
1978, and he oversaw a period of
major facilities expansion at the camp,
including the building of several allweather facilities to help make Brett
Endeavor a full-year camp, cultivating a volunteer relationship with both
AT&T and Bell Atlantic Pioneers
groups.
An accomplished athlete and coach,
Mr. Merrill had played baseball as a
boy in the Concord Sunset League.
After college, he played softball in
the New Jersey Bell Company league;
in 1957, he began coaching Little
League in Westfield. Over the next 33
years, he was to produce 33 winning
seasons and coach numerous championship teams, as well as several allstar teams. After the familys move to
Stanton in 1972, he continued to coach
Little League until 1985.
Dougs love of life, sensitivity to
others, leadership position in so many
roles and determination served as a
beacon and role model to all those
lucky enough to know him.
He was the beloved and adoring
husband of Ruth, his wife of 65 years;
the loving and supportive father of
Suzi Maybee, Margaret, Barbara,
Chip, Chris, Steve, Peter and Mike
Merrill. Mr. Merrill was grandfather
of Beth Maybee Allgeier, Lynne
Nathan, Geoff, David, Jr. and Jill
Maybee; Elisa Wagner, Larry, Doug,
Wyatt, Hunter, Colette, Wesley, and
Alexander Merrill, and great-grandfather of Lizzie, Matthew and Cassie
Allgeier; Alyssa, Danielle and Jocelyn
Nathan; Benjamin Maybee, and Max
and Sierra Wagner. He also was a
loving and supportive father-in-law
to Dr. David Maybee, Mal, Diane,
Janet, Heather and Pat Merrill.
A memorial service will be held at
the Grace Episcopal Church in East
Concord, N.H. on Saturday, August
20, at 2 p.m. A second memorial
service will take place at the First
United Methodist Church in Westfield
on Saturday, November 19. In lieu of
