Alternative scenarios were complied by changing one or two types of management
practices based on the baseline scenario.

The Denitrification-Decomposition (DNDC)
The DNDC model is a process-oriented simulation model, it has been developed to simulate
biogeochemical process occurring in wetland ecosystems especially rice paddies.
The DNDC model has been validated against dataset observed across various agro-ecosystems in
Asia (China, Japan etc.), America and Europe.

STEP.3
The net present value (NPV) of the farm income after
changing from the baseline condition practice i to a
carbon-capturing management practice s per T periods is:

NPV i, s
T

t 1

D t NR PPt S Pt Ct i , s Ct ( i , s ) Mt i . s - I i, s

ct(i,s): represents the soil C increase after changing from practice i to s;

Ptct(i,s): payment that farmers could receive per hectare at a price pt per ton of carbon
sequestered per period;
Dt : discount factor (1 / (1 + r))t with an annual interest rate of r;
NR(PPt, S): net return per hectare for system s in period t, given product price PPt
Ct (i,s) : input cost including extra costs incurred by incorporate crop residues into the soil,
added fertilizer, machinery and labor, which were evaluated by working hours;
M(i,s): maintenance cost per period;
I (i,s): the fixed cost for changing systems.

Thus, farmers might adopt a pro-carbon management if

NPV (i,s) > NPV(i).
@Shibu_APO2016

18

Combined Criteria
Management practices that promote the highest increase in soil C do not necessarily
generate the highest net present values of the farm income.
The operative and input cost of the best C sequestration farming practice can not cover
the cost occurred for the replacement of conventional farming practices
Farming practices with high C sequestration potential
and corresponding NPV against the baseline level
