STRESS AND STRAIN

STATIC REVISION
Determine the resultant internal loadings acting on the cross section at C of the cantilevered beam shown
in Fig

Determine the resultant internal loadings acting on the cross section at C of the machine shaft shown in
Fig. The shaft is supported by journal bearings atAandB,which only exert vertical forces on the shaft.

The 500-kg engine is suspended from the crane boom in Fig. Determine the resultant internal loadings
acting on the cross section of the boom at point E.

Determine the resultant internal loadings on the cross section through point C. Assume the reactions at
the supports A and B are vertical. Determine the resultant internal loadings on the cross section through
point D. Assume the reactions at the supports A and B are vertical

Determine resultant internal loadings acting on section aa and section bb. Each section passes through
the centerline at point C.

The machine is moving with a constant velocity. It has a total mass of 20 Mg, and its center of mass is
located at G, excluding the front roller. If the front roller has a mass of 5 Mg, determine the resu ltant
internal loadings acting on point C of each of the two side members that support the roller. Neglect the
mass of the side members. The front roller is free to roll.

Concept of Stress
The bar in Fig. has a constant width of 35 mm and a thickness of 10 mm. Determine the maximum
average normal stress in the bar when it is subjected to the loading shown

Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown. Take d1 = 30
mm, d2 = 50 mm, and P = 60 kN.

The 80-kg lamp is supported by two rods AB and BC as shown in Fig. If AB has a diameter of 10 mm and
BC has a diameter of 8 mm, determine the average normal stress in each rod.

Determine the average shear stress in the 20-mm-diameter pin at A and the 30-mm-diameter pin at B that
support the beam in Fig.

If the wood joint in Fig. 123a has a width of 150 mm, determine the average shear stress developed along
shear planes aa and bb. For each plane, represent the state of stress on an element of the material.

A 46-kN axial load P is applied to a short wooden post that is supported by a square concrete footing
resting on undisturbed soil.

Concept of Strain
When force P is applied to the rigid lever arm ABC in Fig. the arm rotates counterclockwise about pin A
through an angle of 0.05. Determine the normal strain developed in wire BD.

The rigid beam is supported by a pin at A and wires BD and CE. If the load P on the beam causes the end
C to be displaced 10 mm downward, determine the normal strain developed in wires CE and BD.

The rigid beam is supported by a pin at A and wires BD and CE. If the distributed load causes the end C
to be displaced 10 mm downward, determine the normal strain developed in wires CE and BD.

Due to a loading, the plate is deformed into the dashed shape shown in Fig Determine (a) the average
normal strain along the side AB, and (b) the average shear strain in the plate at relative to the x and y
axes

.
The plate shown in Fig. is fixed connected along AB and held in the horizontal guides at its top and
bottom, AD and BC. If its right side CD is given a uniform horizontal displacement of 2 mm, determine
(a) the average normal strain along the diagonal AC, and (b) the shear strain at E relative to the x, y axes.
