INTRODUCTION;-We have observed the the Effluent Treatment Plant (E.T.P),which is the
property of the Indian Railway (eastern divisionHowrah) under the
supervision of S.S.E Mr. P.K.Manna . We have seen that how waste water is
treated in this plant . Waste water from the neighborhood places are
collected and after treatement they are ejected in the river Hooghly with an
acceptable limit so that the quality of the river remain neutral for all the
living being. Train servicing and maintenance processes generate effluents
such as oil,
antifreeze and cleaning chemicals which can pollute the environment, if not
carefully controlled. Therefore, needs to ensure that the effluent from
Railway
stations/sidings is discharged after proper treatment into river .

PROCESS ;Waste water is treated in this process after passing this water by the
following chambers
1.
2.

SCREEN CHAMBER
CENTRAL PUMPING STATIOJN
OIL CREESE SEPARATOR ,GRID CHAMBER
AERATION CHAMBER
SECENDARY SEDIMENTATION TANK
SLUDGE SUMP
RECIRCULATION PUMP HOUSE
8. SLUDGE DRYING BED

SCREEN CHAMBER
It is the location where waste water from the howrah station and surrounded
area come. It has a dimension of [6.40 m(length)*3.18 m
(breath)*5.347m(depth)] A screen with openings of uniform size is used to remove large
solids such as cloth, which may damage process equipment, reduce the effectiveness of the
ETP or contaminate waterwayS

CENTRAL PUMPING STATION ;It is the second stage of the

water .from the screen chamber water is brought in that location ..it has a
dimension of about [5.0m(diameter)*10m(depth)].In that location all the
waste like water bottle, plastic bags ,paper etc are separated from the water .
With the use of pumping system water from that location is ejected to grid
chamber.

OIL CREESE SEPARATOR ,GRID CHAMBER;It has a dimension of about

[19.575m(length)*0.750(breath)*0.800m (width)]. After separation of all plastic
element and hard waste water come in this location.Although the hard waste are
separated after the second process,it has a mixture of oil which is very
dangerous .So this oil has to be removed before ejection into the river. This includes all
oils, fats and waxes, such as kerosene and lubricatingoils. Oil and grease cause unpleasant films on open water
bodies and negatively affect aquatic life. They can also interfere with biological treatment processes and cause
maintenance problems as they coat the surfaces of components of ETPs.

AERATION CHAMBER;ITt has a dimension of about [13m

(length)*9m(breath)*6m(width)].in this chamber four pump are connected and
water is thrown in the eye of the pump ,and water is oxidized and some dangerous

bacteria are removed from this water.BOD of the water is maintained through this

process
BOD5 is a measure of the quantity of dissolved oxygen used by microoganisms in the
biochemical oxidation of the organic matter in the wastewater over a 5-day period at 20oC. The
test has its limitations but it still used extensively and is useful for determining approximately
how much oxygen will be removed from water by an effluent or how much
may be required for treatment and is therefore important when estimating the size of the ETP
needed. COD is often used as a substitute for BOD as it only takes a few hours not five days to
determine. COD is a measure of the oxygen equivalent of the organic material chemically
oxidised in the reaction and is determined by adding dichromate in an acid solution of the
wastewater.

SECENDARY SEDIMENTATION TANK;It has a shape of cylindrical with a dimensin of about [ 11.5m(diameter) *3.22m
(height)].After the aeration process all the waste water are ejjected in this area
.This water contains sediment of small size ,this can not be separated by the
previous process .In this chamber most of the sediment in the waste water
deposited in the bed of the tank,so scapper is used to removed the settled floc
throught the arrangement of the railway track which are designed around the
chamber .scappers ae bar type member which clean the deposited sediments so
that the workability of the project increases . The deposited sediment with the
effect of the scapper are removed throught the small wholes so that the
height of the tank remain same.

SLUDGE SUMP;-The deposited sediment from the bottom of the sedimentation tank reaches
Slump sum and they are further transfer to the sludge drying bed . It has a
dimension of [5m(length)*3m(breath)*3.37m (width)]. The dry waste are used for
organic fertilizer and the liquid waste are transfer to the screen chamber and

the are further treated.

RECIRCULATION PUMP HOUSE;-It has a dimension of about

[ 5m (length)*4.5 m (breath)*3.2m (width)].From this point treatmented water are
pumped to the river are the are supplied for some domestic uses.

SLUDGE DRYING BED;The sludge are dried in this bed and then they are supplied as organic fertilizer .it
has a dimension of about [30m (length)*6m(breath)*14.63 m(width)].

Conclusion ::-Everyday alternetly this plant is used and to keep better

the future life of this plant sometimes backflow are done ,in this process Water are
flowed in the backward direction through the pump .
A huge amount of money is invested to keep our environment
clean and polution free through the process of the effluent system plant .In
howrah after seeing the effluent system plant we came to know that a huge
amount of money is invested through this process. In the present days the polution
rate of our country growing in a destructive ways that if it is not restrictd ,we
have to face bad days in our future .through this type of effluent system some
amount of polution may be restricted but to have a good environment we should
have to clean our society ad make it polution free.
