Well, here we go again.

This message might be a day late and
a dollar short.
Most of our readership doesnt know
that we usually start planning magazine
issues up to two months in advance.
I always try to make sure that we are not
printing yesterdays news. Sometimes,
this is why we cant run all the press
releases and story pitches we get. But
we always try do our best to support
those that support us, and thank you
for trust and loyalty.
I grew up in the Doylestown area.
I left and went to college at California
University of P.A. in Pittsburgh, where
I majored in Public Relations and
minored in Business Management. I also
lived in Ocean City Maryland for five
summers working at Dimensions Skate
Shop and sunglass stores on the board
walk run by a girlfriends parents. I toured
with Phish for four summers, got to see
the entire country, backpacked across
Europe twice, and even climbed the Great
Wall of China (or at least part of it).
Im glad that after all that living and
traveling, I returned to this unique part
of America to live and work. Its a very

special place, with local pride, lifestyle

diversity, and unparalleled natural
beauty. There are lots of smart, talented,
and passionate people that I am proud
to call my neighbors and friends.
Its also great that we live so close
to New York City, the Jersey Shore, and
the Poconos, but dont forget about all
the little local treasures we have right
here in our backyard. If you want to get
out and explore the world for a day, try
visiting one of your neighboring towns.
Have fun and enjoy, just dont forget
your sunglasses and an openness to
meet new people.
I hope this issue turns you on to
some new places. Have a good summer
and see you all again in the fall, and
also keep an eye out for some of the
new special annual editions we are
working on, like our Wedding Issue due
out in November, and our Area Travel
Guide due out in Spring 2017.

Land of the Lenape

eflecting on our regions history,

we usually set our reference
point within the past 200 years.
But long before William Penns day, the
area was populated by the peaceful and
civilized societies of the Lenape Indians
(pronounced len-NAH-pay, which
loosely translated means the common
people. As an aficionado of local
Indian culture and lore, Ive studied
their society through personal research
and exploration for cultural remains.
The Lenape people looked upon the
turtle as being a metaphor for the universe,
with the creatures shell segments making
up a diverse but unified humanity. Hence,
the turtle remained a most important
symbol in Lenape culture. As a people,
they were advanced agrarians as well as
hunters, but they were also recognized
as peaceful people with great respect for
their fellow human beings. Among other
Algonquian peoples, the Lenape were
considered the grandfathers from whom
all Algonquian people originated.
They also considered themselves
stewards of the land they inhabited,
rather than owners, and lived in isolated
villages along the Delaware River.
Each village had a chief, but he deferred
to his elders, and had no influence
over other villages. The villages
themselves were connected only
because they shared the land. Serious
misunderstandings ensued when
treaties that were concluded between
the Europeans and a specific village
that were not considered binding by
the other villages. Maltreatment
occurred when old world European
values were imposed on the Lenape.
The Walking Purchase agreement of
1737 is a perfect example of cross-culture
miscommunication or deception.
radiusmag.com

Oddly enough, there is no historical

feature such as a village site in our
area that references this great society;
in fact, the federal government does
not even recognize the Lenape tribe.
The names of local waterways, municipal
territories and schools are the most
easily recognized cultural remains.
And through there have been various
archeological digs throughout the
region, artifacts are more generally
unearthed by happenstance.

Long before William Penns day,

the area was populated by the peaceful
and civilized societies of the Lenape
Indians. ALAN FETTERMAN
As a young man, I found arrowheads
and hammer stones on the riverbanks
and river islands by using a small shovel.
The Lenape hunted bear and deer with
bow and arrow, the arrows tipped with
points made of sharpened bone, antler
or flint. It has been decades since Ive
searched for arrowheads, yet I am sure
there are still many to be found.
When biking or walking about the
back roads, canal or river way, keep an
eye out for arrowheads or hammer stones.
And, in the end, remain a steward for our
land. Enjoy it, care for it, and keep it well
for our children and theirs, too. | r

TEST DRIVE

BMW X-5 Hybrid

We love sports cars. We love race cars.
But we also love trucks and SUVs.
The array of trucks owned by
members of Rally Baby Racing ranges
from practical big diesel tow vehicles
to humble work trucks to serious offroaders, and includes a couple of fun
and oddball Land Rover Defender 90s,
Mercedes G-Wagens, and no shortage
of SUVs, including BMW X3 and X5
family-haulers and grocery-getters.
Offered the opportunity to drive
the new plug-in hybrid version of the
venerable BMW X5, it was hard to
imagine that it would really stand out
from the pack. We were wrong.
Its appearance is familiar. Its reputation
for luxury and comfort is well known.
But, the X5 xDrive40e is not
propelled by the 4.0 liter V8 we all
know so well. This models powertrain
consists of a turbocharged 2 liter,
1 8 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / M A R A P R 2016

241 hp, four-cylinder engine paired

with a 111 hp electric motor. The electric
motor can work independently or in
concert with the internal combustion
motor, providing a total output of
309 horsepower.
The hand-off between the two motors
is barely discernable. The power of the
two is sufficient to get this 5,080-pound
beast up to 60 mph in under 6.8 seconds,
with a (governed) top speed of 130 mph.
The e motor will allow you to drive
about 20 miles on battery power alone,
with a top speed of 75 mph. This is
a very attractive proposition for those
of us who putter around town or have
a short commute.
Its fun to drive in silent electric
mode, and we love the way it gets off
the line from a stop. Coupled with
capability to perform long hauls

in refined luxury at speed, it is truly

a brilliant combination.
The X5s interior has always been
and remains great attractive, practical,
roomy, with comfortable, easily adjustable
seats, excellent visibility, and four-zone
climate control. Optional premium
packages abound, including a leather
dash, satellite radio, a fantastic sound
system, surround view cameras, and
my favorite the cold weather package
with heated steering wheel, heated rear
seats, and heated mirrors.
It is also available with 20-inch
wheels, brushed aluminum exterior
trim and other M-sport performance
appearance trim features that belie
its true gas-saving personality.
We will keep our tow rigs and
pickups, our topless off-roader British
brutes we need them for what they
can do. But the new X5 would be

a great addition to and a clear leader
of the pack. In our world, this vehicle
would spend most of its life sailing
swiftly and silently under battery power.
However, it is reassuring to know
that it is a four-season car that really
can do it all including leaving the
pavement for the dirt. With the only
compromises being a reduction of cargo
space in order to house those lithium-ion
batteries and their added weight, this
is hybrid done right. | r

MUSIC

A Peach Tucked Away

in Old Coal Country
By Matt Kelchner

Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo.

Large crowds and late nights, all filled
with the songs played by favorite bands.
For many, summertime is festival
season. What can beat hanging out
with a group of friends, sipping a cold
drink, and listening to great artists
back to back all day?
Out in Montage Mountain, a resort
just a short drive away from Scranton,
Pennsylvania, is one event that the
Keystone State can call its ownthe
Peach Music Festival. This summer
marks the fifth year of bringing people
together for a mid-August weekend full
of camping, arts and an eclectic lineup
curated with the help of the Allman
Brothers family. To help celebrate the half
a decade mark, the Trey Anastasio Band,
String Cheese Incident, and Greg Allman
have been tapped as headliners. Oh, and
did we mention theres a water park, too?

Since 2012, concert promoters Live

Nation have been linking up with
the Allman Brothers to put together
a festival that is truly unique to the
Electric City. We were able to catch
up with Vice President of Marketing
Dave Niedbalski, whos been working
on the Peach Music Festival ever since
the beginning, to find out the inner
workings behind the scenes.
My favorite thing about the Peach
is the vibe and sense of community, he
said. We have so many people who come
year after year from all over the country,
and theyve become family to me.
I was brought in the festival the
very first year, continued Niedbalski.
What started as just getting the word
out about the Peach Music Festival
quickly snowballed into much more,
as responsibilities were being added
left and right. First it was strictly

MUSIC

marketing the festival, but soon I was

helping book talent and assisting in the
curation of the fest.
The idea for the Peach Music Festival
was spawned from another joint venture
between Live Nation and the Allman
Brothers in Florida titled the Wanee
Festival. Through tight knit relationships
built over the years, the two wanted
to bring something special up north.
And as Niedbalski sums it up, Fast
forward five years later, and here we are
with an amazing festival in the Peach.
While his roles have added up
over the years, that isnt to say its
a one-man show.
Ive been contributing since the
inception, but there isnt just one
person who books the acts for the
Peach. Niedbalski explained. Its
really a team effort by the office and
the Allman Brothers family.

The festival may only last four days,

but it takes months and months of
planning and preparation to get to
the party. Working on any festival,
not just the Peach, is a 365-day-a-year
job, he said.
The first seeds of idea for the festival
weekend are sewn well over a year
ahead of time.
The whole thing starts with an artist
wish listsome new ones, some who
have become time- honored members of
the Peach family, Niedbalski explained.
In a perfect world, every act is available
and wants to play. But alas, such is not the
case. There is a constant back and forth
happening, as discussions take place, and
bands either confirm or turn down offers.
Niedbalski and his team pay special
attention to developing a diverse group
of artists. Rather than going for the big
names that are tough to nail down, they

2 4 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J U L Y A U G U S T 20 16

MUSIC

focus on special ones that may give each

years lineup that unforgettable moment.
Honestly, its not about it being
a hard act to book per se, but working
on unique ones, said Niedbalski.
Toots and the Maytals are 2016s
example. They havent played a show
in three years, and we have them at the
Peach, he proudly boasts. String Cheese
Incident is doing a set with Gregg
Allman. That was fun to connect the dots,
and is going to be really special.
As you progress, its fun to see some
of your wishes turns into reality, and
your vision for each stage and the way
the music flows evolve, as you continue
to secure artists, Niedbalski observed.
Its a never-ending process though
for example, right now, were finalizing
preparations for this year, but were
already discussing plans for 2017.
With a lineup as impressive as this
years, picking favorites can be a bit
challenging, but we did manage to get
a few names from Niedbalski.
Every project that Joe Russo is
inthis year he is playing twice. Once
with Joe Russos Almost Dead, and once
with Bustle in your Hedgerow, said
Niedbalski. He is just a madman on the
drums, and I love watching him play.
The second name he pulls out of his
hat is living legend Charles Bradley.
Hes playing on Sunday afternoon.
His nickname is the Screaming Eagle
of Soul. Hes got such an amazing,
powerful voice, and his story is one
of the greatest in music.
Rounding things out for Niedbalski
is his pick of the headliners.
Id have to say Gregg Allman, as
well, he added. His band is just so tight,
and he plays all those Allman Brothers
Band and Gregg songs that you grew
radiusmag.com

We have so many people who

come year after year from all over
the country and theyve become
family to me. DAVE NIEDBALSKI
up listening to. Its a perfect summer
soundtrack. With the way the bill of
bands playing has shaped out, theres
sure to be that perfect soundtrack for
everyone this year.
In keeping with the theme of favorites,
we asked Niedbalski for his favorite
memory from working to help put on
the Peach Music Festival during the
last five years.
On the first day of campers arriving,
we had terrible, relentless rain and
lighting almost the entire night, he said.
Not an ideal situation for a first-year
festival. Extreme weather can shut down
entire festivals, putting a year-plus worth
of work to waste. Such wasnt the case
for the Peach.
Niedbalski ended up personally
shuttling concertgoers to and from the
stages and camping grounds.
It was just such a rough spot for
the fans to be in, but every single one
of them said, It will be worth it for
the music. Sure enough, those good
spirits did the trick.
And of course, the next day the
sun shined, recalls Niedbalski, And
it felt like the Peach was born. Being
alongside the first fans who came to the
Peach is something Ill never forget. | r
The Peach Music Festival will be held
Aug. 1114 on Montage Mountain in

most of her adult life living in a small,
rural town in Northern Ireland with her
former husband and their four children.
Although an Irish country village
would seem the perfect atmosphere to
create, with its lush, rolling countryside,
breathtaking views of the sea, and
plethora of astonishing castles, it did
not ultimately prove to be a significant
influence. Perhaps it is not until one
reaches a certain depth of despair that
something beautiful and transformative
can emerge; and for Brolly, the despair
was the separation from her husband
of 16 years, and a brutal custody battle
for her children that followed, while the
beauty was the birth of her art through
this struggle.

In 2011, Brolly sat down in her small

rental home and realized that she
needed an outleta form of expression
that would encapsulate the tumultuous
emotions that were plaguing her. Thus
was born her collage, Trapped in
Beauty. A bird in a cage suspended
from a tree is depicted in the piece.
It is representative of her own feelings
of being trapped in another country,
surrounded by awe inspiring beauty,
but with a deep longing to be free
to return to her home in the United
States, with her children at her side.
Brolly describes her experience upon
finishing this piece as cathartic.
I knew in that moment that if there
were a strength within me that I didnt
know existed, it was through my artistic
expression that I would find it, she said.

Brollys first five pieces mirror her

life story and reflect her journey from
hopelessness and despair to optimism,
bravery, and transformation. My walk
through life has had many challenges.
My art is proof that these challenges
can be overcome, she observed.
Technically speaking, Brollys paper
collages are extremely detailed and
virtually seamless. She begins each
piece by translating an idea or feeling
into a rough sketch. From there, she
embellishes the sketch with small

pieces torn from magazine pages

and newspapers. Brolly has spent
countless hours thumbing through
glossy pages with a keen eye for
color, finish, and design.
When I work with these scraps,
I am reminded that something
beautiful and priceless can be made
from something otherwise viewed as
ordinary and disposable, she said.
The most challenging aspects of
Brollys work are finding the right
blends and shades, and maintaining

COVER ARTIST

the level of discipline and patience

it takes in order to achieve the desired
outcome, which is a piece that is rich
with color, alive with texture, and
emotionally evocative.
I know a piece is done when I can
stand back and view it with pride,
knowing that I have given birth to my
vision, explained the artist.
Since her triumphant return to her
home in Bucks County, Pa., Brolly has
been working diligently to promote
her work. Her pieces have been selected
by several juried shows, including the
29th Annual Bucks Fever Art Exhibition
in 2015. She currently has work
displayed in the Michael Fratrich Fine
Art Gallery in Lambertville, N.J., and
is working on a commissioned piece
for an upscale restaurant in Center
City, Philadelphia.
While Brolly remains proud of her
past work, and holds a sentimental
connectedness with what it represents,
radiusmag.com

she looks forward to expanding her

vision, and exploring different types
of media to achieve more textural layers
in her work, while maintaining her
authenticity and keeping in theme with
her belief that everything discarded
can be found and made new again.
As a struggling single mother, it
is also Brollys belief that art should
be available to not only the wealthy,
but also to those who hold a true
appreciation for the craft, which is why
she sells her originals in print form
through various online vendors.
It is my wish to inspire people when
they see my pieces, and hear the story
behind themfor them to know that
creativity and strength lie within all
of us, and that anything is possible,
she said. | r

Chapman Gallery:

Painting Eternal Pictures

of Bucks County
by Steve Chernoski

What scene in Bucks County best

epitomizes the areas sense of place?
A covered bridge over a creek
with hardwoods brandishing their
fall foliage? Or perhaps a springtime
scene of birds nesting in Bowmans
Hill Wildflower Preserve? Whatever
one imagines, the Chapman Gallery
in downtown Doylestown has been
bringing together local artists capturing
those visions for decades now.
The gallery, whose artwork consists
primarily of oil paintings, watercolors,
pastels, as well as acrylics, has built
up a unique network of Bucks County
area artists who have remained the
heart of the gallery since its inception
back in 1989.
I think thats what makes us a little
different, said gallery owner and

namesake John Chapman. I have new

artists that have begun recently, but my
core group has been here a long time,
he continued.
Chapman grew up in Doylestown,
and has lived in the area for most of
his life. His interest in Bucks County
culture can be attributed to growing
up and being thankfully surrounded
by places such as the Mercer and
Michener Art museums, as well as
the Bucks County Playhouse. So, like
a writer writing what they know,
Chapman has remained true to what
he knows -- his home and the shared,
almost familial belief with other artists
that this area is a special place. And
when tasked with organizing a gallery,
it was natural for Chapman to connect
with like-minded creatives.

When you come into our gallery,

The work you see in the gallery is
intentional, Chapman affirmed. When
people are shopping local, theyre
looking for local things. Art here might
remind them of a great vacation, or
possibly home.

Sometimes, people looking at

art feel intimidated, but were
down to earth. JOHN CHAPMAN
At the gallery, we provide artwork
with a quality that really represents
the area, and we provide something for
everyone, he added.
The gallery hosts two shows per year
that exhibit new work from most of the

core artists, which tend to showcase

the seasonal beauty of Bucks County.
Featured artists can be easily be
discovered in the gallery, which has been
in downtown Doylestown since 2001,
after moving from New Britain. Previews
of most of the artists work can be
viewed on Chapmans recently updated
website, thechapmangallery.com.
When you come into our gallery,
were approachable, Chapman said.
Sometimes, people looking at art
feel intimidated, but were down to
earth, and dont pressure anyone to
buy. We think the paintings will sell
themselves.

Lumberville General Store

Hits its Stride
By Steve Chernoski

On a warm June morning, a hiker trekked

south on River Road (Pennsylvania
Route 32), and stopped to ask several
Black Bass Hotel guests if they knew
the location of the Lumberville General
Store. Five minutes later, the same
question was asked yet again, this time
from the lead biker of a large group
of cyclists, who crossed over from the
nearby Lumberville-Raven Rock Bridge.
The exchanges, all within a five-minute
window, indicate how the Lumberville
General Store is once again becoming
a destination.
The store, along with the Black Bass
Hotel, anchors the Lumberville Historic
District, which covers 85 buildings
along River Road, roughly bordered
on the north by Fleecy Day Road, and
by Greenhill Road on the southern

side. Doylestown entrepreneur Jack

Thompson, who also owns the hotel,
purchased the store at auction in 2008,
and has done multiple renovations, the
most recent in April 2016.
River Road around 20072008 was
dying a slow death, said hotel and
general store general manager Grant
Ross. Then Jack came along with his
daughter, Laura [Thompson Barnes],
and had a vision to retain cultural
aspects of the area, while expanding
offeringsit was like a stimulus package
for the district, Ross continued.
The General Store now encompasses
versatile indoor and outdoor sections.
The main building, dating back to
1770, was renovated with historic
designations in mind, but the modern
additions include a manicured deli

area and large pastry cabinet, which

contains homemade ice cream, with
flavors like cinnamon and honey
lavender vanilla, and a new gourmet
coffee roaster nicknamed Big Red.
A few steps past the cozy dining
room and newly refurbished
bathrooms is a Georgian-style library
and conference area. The quiet spot
accommodates small group meetings,
as well as medium-sized dining parties
or book circles.
The first outdoor seating spot is
brick faced with underground propane
lines feeding heat lamps, in addition
to fire pits for when the weather turns
chilly. Across the parking lot is the
special event area, hidden amid a small
cascading waterfall, shared with the
hotel, and complete with a small and
a nearby indoor space for brides to
prepare before weddings.

The store, six miles north of New

Hope, parallels the Delaware Canal
towpath, and stands across the river
from Bulls Island Recreation Area.
The location explains why its circled
on so many itineraries of outdoors
enthusiasts. Terry and Nancy Brown
of Point Pleasant, N.J., were at the store
to organize a July luncheon. The two
represented NJ Rail Trail Riders, who
have various excursions around the
area. They marked the general store
to be their finish line for one terrific
lunch as they wrote on their meetup.com
page. Grant noted that it certainly helps
when larger groups call ahead
to give the cooks preparation, but its
not essential.
Near the store is also a refurbished old
barn, which was converted into a bakery
and smoke kitchen. The bakery serves
both the store and the hotel, but the rest

of the kitchens serve as a place for chefs

to experiment with smoking their own
salmon, for example, or putting various
cheeses through a cold smoke process.
At the general store, we have to be
clever. Unlike the hotel, Im trying to
feed you for ten dollars here, said Ross.
Next to the barn, the pergola patio
was getting set for a wedding party
later in the day, and the next day,
a Fathers Day BBQ was to take place
on the grassy area known as the
meadow. At the venue there is
rehearsal dining, receptions, birthdays.
Its a much more tactile experience,
which is affordable and cheerful, Ross
emphasized. Its much more casual
compared to the hotel.
Although the store has had to contend
with Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation construction on Route
32, the busy staff is prepared for the
