Components of a Narrative Text

Purpose

After this lesson students will be able to construct a narrative text using
a sequence of events. Students will be able to write a beginning,
middle, and end within a narrative as shown through future writing
samples.

State Standards

LAFS.1.W.1.3: Write narratives with two or more appropriately

sequenced events. Include details, use temporal words, and provide a
sense of closure.

Materials Needed

Chart and markers.

Introductory statement
of purpose

Today we are going to talk about what a narrative is. What is included in
this way of writing? We are going to focus on having at least two events
in time order.

Connection to
prior knowledge

Last week we brainstormed ideas for a narrative text, today you can
choose something new or perhaps something we discussed. Teacher
shares a funny story from over summer, then uses this as her/his idea.

Modeling, demonstration,
or student involvement

Model brainstorming for an idea, via a think-aloud. Plan three events

you want to happen and a good ending. Then write the introduction
with a hook. Allow students to go to their seats to write their narrative.
