Zadara helps Lawter address performance, scalability, security and cost concerns

Lawter is a company strong in pine chemicals and built on products devel - oped using pine chemical resources. Lawter serves the graphic arts, adhesives, specialty coat ings, aroma chemicals and the sy nthetic rubber industries. Lawter , has a long history and is a result of many highly successful businesses coming together over more than 60 years. Today, they are a global business operating in over 20 countries with 11 man ufacturing and technology centers. Their strength is built on formulating technology, strategic raw material sourcing and their global network of manufacturing capabilities .

SAP applicat i ons worldwide. The goal was to replace their older IBM storage with a more scalable, higher performing and easier to manage solution. Additionally, they set a goal to move from a capital - expense (CapEx) t o an operational - expe ns e (OpEx) model .

With business critical SAP applications hosted by Dimension Data in both Amsterdam and London, Lawter was looking to leverage the scalability and flexibility of cloud - based , as - a - service solutions. Their SAP applica tion ran on SQL Server in a High - Availability (HA) cluster .

“When we moved our storage from a traditional array into the cloud, we were very impressed with Zadara’s performance isolation.”

“Zadara was the only solution we could find that provided isolation to eliminate the ‘noisy neighbor’ problem. Additionally, their as-a- service business model dramatically reduced our management overhead, further reducing our overall costs.”

Manager, Lawter

With the guidance of their partner Dimension Data, Lawter identified Zadara Storage as a candidate for their storage needs. With an enterprise - grade storage solution , offered as a

pay - as - yo u - go OpEx service, the Zadara

storage cloud met their primary needs.

After a thorough analysis, Lawter chose

to proceed with Zadara Storage as the

foundation of their new storage infrastructure.

virtualization manager for Lawter. "They were the only solution we could find that provided isolation to eliminate the ‘noisy neighbor’ problem. Additionally, their as - a - service busin ess model dramatically reduced our management overhead, further reducing our overall costs."

By replacing their older storage array with the Zadara VPSA, Lawter has been able to move away from a CapEx model and leverag e the OpEx Storage - as - a - Service model provided by Zadara Storage. In addition to the cost advantages of an OpEx - only model, Lawter is now fully elastic and scalable in all

directions. They can add or remove storage capacity and performance as needed and only pay for what they use . This elimi nates the

need to over provision storage resources, and therefore, further reduces costs.

One of Lawter’s primary concerns was that the prior IBM i nfrastructure was only providing about 11,000 IOPS , and Lawter needed a minimum of 20,000 IOPS in each location. With the support of Dimension

Data, Lawter deployed the Zadara Virtual Private Storage Array (VPSA) Enterprise Storage - as - a - Service architectur e and is

now seeing 30,000 IOPS –

or triple their prior performance – and

50% greater than their initial target .

“We tripled our performance. This was 50% higher than our original goal.”

A related performance goal was to

addre ss the “noisy neighbor” problem where shared resources allow one applica tion to impact another applica - tion’s perfor mance. The Zadara VPSA architecture sup ports full isolation, so that performance is guaran teed and not impacted by other applications or users.

"When we moved our storage from a traditional array into the cloud, we were very impressed wit h Zadara’s performance isolation," said Antony Poppe, global network and

Lawter was fa cing typical data storage challenges – scalability, performance, security and cost containment. By investigating their options, they realized that Zad ara’s cloud - based, storage - as - a - service not only solved their initial challenges, but moved them from a CapEx mode l into a true OpEx model. This both reduces cost and management overhead, but also enables Lawter to eliminate the 3 - 5 year replacement cycle. With Zadara’s Storage Cloud, Lawter can rest easy knowing that they have a fully scalable , and elastic storage infrastructure .
