Valuable Features:
Connectivity with SAP and low impact on SAP environments. Alsooverall stability
of the product.
Improvements to My Organization:
Kellogg (the company I work for) used this product for data migration into the new
SAP environment that we have established for North America. We also used the
tool during the Pringles acquisition.
Use of Solution:
5 years.
Deployment Issues:
No issues that would impact our timelines.
Stability Issues:
Data Services is extremely stable and stability information steward is considerably
higher in version 4.2 than it was at the initial version 4.0.
Scalability Issues:
Easy to scale horizontally or vertically.
Customer Service:
Satisfied.
Technical Support:
Needs improvement as far as responsiveness.
Reproduction Prohibited
Previous Solutions:
No.
Initial Setup:
I was not directly involved at the initial setup.
Implementation Team:
I heard Kellogg used a combination of SAP and Accenture for the initial setup.
ROI:
Data Quality has an indirect ROI and we have not derived a fixed number.
Pricing:
Since I was not involved with the initial setup I am not able to answer a question
about the start-up cost. As far as day-to-day cost, it is minimal (1/4 FTE) due to its
stability.
Other Advice:
Depends on the environment. If you are connecting to SAP environment I would
recommend involvement of a 3
rd
party vendor with experience.

Valuable Features:
Impact and Lineage analysis.
Auto Documentation.
Recovery of jobs.
Text Data Processing.
Improvements to My Organization:
I've done a migration project (from OWB to BODS) in Singapore. The reason
customer opted for BODS over OWB was automated trigger E-mail when job fails
and the recovery of the jobs from the point it failed in the last execution. Also, when
loading data from flat files, once the data loading from a file is complete BODS is
capable enough to call any batch files to move the processed files to another
location after completion.
Use of Solution:
More than 6 Years.
Deployment Issues:
No issues with deployment.
Stability Issues:
No issues with stability.
Scalability Issues:
No issues with scalability.

Customer Service:
100% as no manual intervention is required once the solution is implemented.
Technical Support:

Initial Setup:
It was quite straightforwardfor me as I had experience with other ETL tools and the
concepts.
Implementation Team:
Through vendor team and the level of expertise was satisfactory.
Alternate Solutions:

Vendor: SAS

Comparisons:*
* Data is based on the aggregate profiles of IT Central Station Users researching this solution.

Improvements to My Organization:
Ive used this product in multiple ways. Initially, I integrated it with QAS address
software to validate and standardize customer website registration data in real
time, loading the cleansed customer data into Siebel CRM. Ive used the data
profiling reports to identify errors in ETL jobs and enterprise data warehouses. Ive
built business rule metrics that score ETL jobs in terms of data completeness and
data accuracy between the business application data store and the enterprise data
warehouse. All efforts have proved invaluable to the business user.
Use of Solution:
SAS Data Management Studio V 2.4
Deployment Issues:
While the deployment is more complex now that it was 7 years ago, if you follow the
detailed instructions from SAS regarding the software depot deployment, it is not
difficult, and can be completed in 1-2 hours easily.
Stability Issues:
The server side component runs rock solid on Linux. The Windows client
component is less stable, and may require a restart a few times a day, especially if
installed on a PC with limited RAM and you are dealing with very large data stores.
Since Im one major release behind in this software, its possible these client
stability issues have been corrected in the most recent release.
Scalability Issues:
Very large data stores require a powerful server to run the data profiling reports for
all of the rows in the database. My estimate for very large is a database >= 200
million records.
Customer Service:
When DataFlux was a standalone company, the customer service deserved an A+
rating. Now that it is a wholly owned subsidiary of SAS, and just one piece of a
giant software conglomerate, I would give them a C+.
Reproduction Prohibited
Technical Support:
Technical support is strong at resolving install and configuration issues of the client
side tool. You will need to speak with a SAS DataFlux consultant to debug complex
technical issues related to the data quality jobs you code, or server side problems.
Implementation Team:
Im an independent DataFlux consultant, so I am the vendor. Ive partnered with
SAS consultants on implementations, as well as performed solo installations. SAS
DataFlux consultants are top notch in their expertise of the tool and data. But they
are not required to install successfully, just add a level of confidence.
ROI:
The ROI can be very high in terms of improving the reliability and accuracy of data
used in forecasting and marketing models (ex: customer data, sales data). You can
also reduce storage costs; slow the need for hardware upgrades by using DataFlux
to eliminate duplicate data. Even better, use DataFlux to audit your ETL and data
warehouse efforts, insuring accurate reporting. CEOs and CIOs will drop $10M for
a new ERP system installed by a big-4 consulting firm, and then balk at 5% of this
cost to insure that the data stored in this complex and costly ERP system is not
corrupt or full of duplicate data.
Alternate Solutions:
Yes, including Business Objects, IBMs Infosphere, and Trillium.
Other Advice:
Take the time to send a minimum of 3 of your most technical data architects to
onsite training at SAS in Cary, North Carolina. Their facilities and teachers are
excellent, and this training is of great benefit for your organization over the long
term.

Valuable Features:
Data profiling and data quality control
Improvements to My Organization:
I worked on a project which was to enable the Impact Analysis for the changes
happened in source system. By leveraging the IA data profiling capability, the
profiling result was re-directed into an external database container, and some of BI
reports were generated on top of that to support monitoring the data quality.
Support more CLIs or extend the existing IAAdmin.sh and IAJob.sh scripts, which
could be more flexible for the end users.
Provide more log details when running any data profiling or rules from the console
directly. As of v9.1, the troubleshooting process is still painful. Developers have to
do that from multiple places, either from the underlying DataStage job log or the log
files placed in both server and client side.
Use of Solution:
3+ months
Deployment Issues:
Yes. When I tried to deploy some data rules in production, the package has to be
placed on the server. This could be better if IA supports the package located on the
machine where the client software installed.
Reproduction Prohibited
Scalability Issues:
Yes. When trying to run a data rule towards tables containing big volume of data,
the IA db does not perform well.
Initial Setup:
Well, the setup is not complex because the IA is one of Information Server
components, however, as a post-installation the configuration process for the end
users is not simple. Users have to manually setup the IA db from provided scripts,
configure the engine and IA db connections from the console.
Other Advice:
Information Analyzer is still a good product. It enables the auto data profiling for the
end users and it is also capable of doing data quality analysis via business
language oriented rules. Being a component of Information Server suite, IA is also
leveraging some advantages from it, like shared metadata and powerful parallel
engine. Although there are some features which need to be enhanced, I would still
recommend others to use IA as a product for data profiling and data quality control.

Valuable Features:

Improvements to My Organization:
For basic Business Rule Creation to cleanse Legacy data, it worked as intended.
Lacked functionality to get creative.
Use of Solution:
1 year
Deployment Issues:
Yes - it would go down constantly until IBM spent a better part of several weeks
(and our budget to pay their consultants) stabilizing it. Seriously freaky stuff - data
on screens shaking...no joke.
Stability Issues:

Implementation Team:
Vendor team - Expertise high - but selling us the product seemed to be their
primary objective - our ability to realize the program's potential (Viability wise) was
definitely secondary.
ROI:
Stopped using it. Took a loss.
Other Advice:
Be sure your people on the ground who will be using it are in the room with IBM
making sure their needs are represented and addressed. They'll know the legacy
data landscape, and where it's going...not management.

Valuable Features:
As an administrator the most valuable tools are the Admin client and IBM
Information Server. These tools allow me to create and maintain projects as well as
create and maintain user security.
Improvements to My Organization:
This application has allowed my teams of developers to transfer data quickly and
easily from SQL databases into Oracle databases. The application also allows my
teams to easily create and run batch jobs.
Use of Solution:
I have supported this tool within my company for two and a half years. We
previously used version 8.1 and last year upgraded to version 8.7.
Deployment Issues:
I did encounter issues during the install. For most issues the concierge service only
sent me links to documentation I already had. Once I was given a dedicated
resource to assist in troubleshooting the level of support was great.
Stability Issues:
Yes we have encountered issues with stability. After a successful import and
compile of all of our jobs, they would have a Not compiled status in Director. Our
IBM resource stated we would need to change the odbc file to list a default
parameter. This seems to be a common issue with this product, however, I could
not find this detailed in the installation documentation. We have also noticed that
the tnsnames entry for the oracle database does not connect properly using the full
database naming convention. However, when setting up connections to other
databases the full path can be used.
Reproduction Prohibited
Scalability Issues:
No, we have found the product to be very scalable for our companys purposes.
Customer Service:
I have only requested support twice and each time support was very good once I
was given a dedicated resource.
Technical Support:
The support is very good once given a dedicated resource. It is difficult to get a
dedicated resource when first requested. The initial response is a link to
documentation. This would be helpful to others who have not gone through the
documentation but a little frustrating when submitting a support issue after going
through the documentation.
Initial Setup:
Initial setup was complex. The documentation is not very straightforward and a little
difficult to navigate. Because of the large choice of installation options it would be
helpful to be able to filter more on the specific architecture being used for each
install. It would also be helpful to have links to the Education Assistant included in
the sections that are relevant to that section.
Implementation Team:
We implemented through an in-house team, which consisted of our DBA and
myself.
Other Advice:
My advice would be to review all relevant installation documentation in advance.
Bookmark the relevant pages as well as the Education Assistant tutorials relevant
to your install. If this is the first install engage a vendor team.

Valuable Features:
Synchronization of Contact / Account data is most valuable to the client.
Improvements to My Organization:
The quality of data has vastly improved & our business intelligence reports are
accurate in real time.
Additional examples:
1) Stateless that means no synchronization of Contact / Account data is needed
between Siebel and OEDQ. If for example a new contacts gets created it will be
possible to match this new contact immediately. There is no lag time for the
synchronization between both.
2) Fully configurable matching process. In OEDQ a matched contact or account
the rules which are applicable while matching can be identified. So a score of 95%
can be explained in such a way that a contact was found based on an exact match
but with a different phone number.
Use of Solution:
2 years.
Deployment Issues:
Yes, Java 64 bit version was used, but Siebel the enterprise software application
was 32-bit. So we had compatibility issues.
Stability Issues:
Stand-Alone application (OEDQ) was very stable with-in apache.
Customer Service:
Oracle customer service was excellent.
Reproduction Prohibited
Technical Support:
Oracle technical support was great as we got the response of most of our resolution
ticket on thesame day.
Previous Solutions:
Yes, we used Informatica IIR (identity resolution system) & we switched because
most of Enterprise software was Oracle based, so for support & compatibility
reasons we switched to OEDQ.
Initial Setup:
Initial setup for OEDQ was straight forward but integration with CRM system was
complex.
Implementation Team:
This product was implemented as a part of in-house development.
ROI:
We have trust worthy & reliable data; accurate ana.
Pricing:
N/A. Software was procured by another department based on our request. You
need one FTE or consultant to maintain the product after initial setup.
Other Advice:
Ensure that you have clear understanding when integration OEDQ with other
enterprise software. Also ensure that softwarecompatibilitymatrix & setup
documentation has been reviewed carefully.
