Injection in-mold labeling (injection-IML) pioneered in Europe in the late 1970s

IML in Europe is a mainstream process used extensively, but not exclusively, for food
packaging
An estimated 85 % to 95 % of rigid food packaging there now uses IML, as do some
durable goods such as returnable beer crates.
IML reportedly started in the U.S. in the early 1980s
By Procter & Gamble and Owens-Illinois Packaging (now part of Graham Packaging), the
first applications were blow molded HDPE bottles with paper labels coated with a heatactivated adhesive.
Problems with label quality, feeding, and handling kept IML activity low-key in the U.S.
until the mid-1990s, when it was rekindled by molders attempts to eliminate secondary
operations, reduce the scrap rate from post-mold labeling, and to produce a no-label
look similar to that of blow molded articles.

Take the label from the magazine

Charge electro statically the label, so that it sticks to the mold wall
Insert label in the mold
The hot plastic envelopes the label making it an integral part of the molded item
Simultaneously remove the finished part and hand over the label

Advantage of IML :

Elimination of Secondary Processes

Reduction in WIP
Reduction in Scrap Rates
The label becomes an integral part of the product, rather than resting
on the outside.
The label thereby takes on structural as well as decorative value whilst
reducing package weight by as much as 10% to 15% while adding also
sidewall strength.
Improvement of sidewall strength of a container up to 120%
IML improves BRAND IMAGE of the product
With attractive and colorful packaging the sales increase of 30%
Add value to product
Safety messaging
Shelf Presence or point of purchase appeal

GLOBAL LABEL MARKET :

In-mold labeling (IML) is the smallest of the four major groups of labeling
formats, accounting for around 2 percent of the total global label volume of
39,500 million square meters (61,250 million msi) in 2006.

Market Potential :
China and India are really taking over the market for IML. The reason, apparently,
is that the perception of IMLs extra cost often isn't borne out in reality, according
to the In-Mold Decorating Association (IMDA), When the labor and extra steps
involved in secondary operations for applying glue-backed labels or pressuresensitive labels are considered, then IML can compete on a cost basis.

The global IML market was 790 million sq. meters of material in 2011.
Last year, IML demand was growing at about a 22% annual rate in South America.
Worldwide, the growth rate was about 3.25%.
Global IML volume will rise from about 829 million sq. meters to roughly 975
million sq. meters in 2016.

Market size of IML-B and IM-IML :

95% of the U.S. market is blow mold labelling and only 5% is injection inmold. Furthermore, IM-IML is growing faster than IML-B in the U.S. market.
The major printing methods for IML in the U.S. are solvent gravure, narrow
web solvent flexo and sheet fed offset. UV technology is getting more
interesting due to the growth of injection mold labelling
The European IML market is the mirror image of the U.S. market: 95% of the
market volume is injection in-mold labelling and 5% blow mold.

In Europe, France is the largest market with about a 40% share, followed by
Germany with 15% Benelux with 12%, and UK with 10%.

Market size of IML-B and IM-IML :

The European IML market is growing faster than U.S. market at around 15%
per year. Major printing methods are sheet-fed offset (65%), reel fed UV
offset (15%), UV letterpress (10%) and UV flexo (10%).
The Australian IML market is nearly 120 million square meters and growing
at a considerable rate of 25% per year. Blow mold and injection mold inmold labelling are sharing the market by each 50%. The major printing
methods are reel and sheet-fed offset and there are only filmic substrates
applied.
The Japanese IML market is with 11 million square meters rather small.IMIML cannot be found in Japan today, IML-B on the other hand is very
common. The printers in Japan use solvent gravure, UV letterpress and
offset.

Label growth in India :

In India wet glue labels although still growing in double digits, are fast
making way for both pressure sensitive and flexible film labels. Bar-coded
labels are growing by 30 to 35 per cent.
Per capita consumption of labels in India is the lowest in any region that has
been quantified and analysed it also has the highest growth rate in the
world at 19 per cent. Even Chinas rate of growth has recently declined from
14 per cent to 13.1 per cent.

India is one of the few countries in the world where packaging growth is the
leading segment. the packaging industry in India which includes glass, metal
and plastic rigid and semi-rigid packaging, flexible, corrugated, and board
packaging, is of the order of Rs.18,000 core (approximately US$ 4 billion).

User segment for Indian label industry :

As far as the label printing and converting industry our analysis is in
the context of the overall printing and packaging industries. For this
framework we have evaluated the local and imported equipment and
consumable consumption and the overall growth trends. For packaging
and its subset of labels we have looked at about 57 user segments in
approximately 15 categories.

In looking at 57 consumer categories in which labels are used FMCG

(food, beverages, cosmetics, personal care, home and hygiene),
consumer durables, fabrics and garments, and two, three and four
wheeled automobiles the geographic distribution in most categories
is highest in the North, followed by the West and the South which are
neck in neck in most categories.

16

Barriers:
Some common issues that come up in IML applications:

Resin Selection
Durability
Tool Cleanliness
Label Construction
End of Arm Tooling (EOAT)
Label Over molding
High Voltage Arcing
Misaligned Label
Issue of Speed
Time Consuming job set-ups.

17

The IML format faces challenges from other labeling and product decoration
technologies as under :

Heat transfer labeling

Self Adhesive
Silk Screen
Shrink sleeves

5/5/2013

18

Heat transfer labeling cannot quite reach the high level of printing of IML
Heat transfer labels do not provide top-to-bottom coverage
IML's polypropylene labels compare to heat transfer foils and wraps provide a much
higher degree of heat resistance, scratching, pealing, tearing and fading.

The pails the same size, people perceive it as a bigger container It gives a better shelf
presence and a stronger billboard effect.

The glue applied the label on the surface

With IML the label is in the wall of the item,

there is a total bond between the label and the
plastic, so Label cannot be peeled off.

IML labels offer better resistance to moisture, chemical, scratching and surface scuffing
because of the material PP compare i.e. to paper
For injection molded tubs, all four side sand the bottom can be decorated with a single
label during the molding process, some thing that pressure sensitive can not do.
Light weight of part, because label displaces synthetic granulate equal to own volume
(granulatesavings10-15%)

Most of the inks for screen printing are applied with a heavy coverage so the ink
layer takes a long time to dry. The printed products must be dried.
Decoration in made in several steps (one color per time)
High costs of storage of blank products and during the steps of decoration
Usually used with few colors to be cost attractive (low image quality)

Low resistance of ink to scratching

Advantage of screen printing / serigraphy : give a soft texture of the printing area
creating a tactile surface

Shrink sleeves are normally used for bottles

With specific shape and tamper-evident band
Cost of sleeves

The film shrinks when heat is applied

The full body shrink sleeve fits the entire body of the container
The top of the sleeve can be perforated to form a tamper-evident band

STRENGTH
Product resilience, security and durability
Stronger growth potential IM-IML
Lower cost than other labelling methods.
Higher packaging line speed
No extra labelling step
Light weight of containers
reduction in label defects
Resistant to product staining

WEAKNESS
More complex value chain
Higher tooling cost and automation.
Longer set-up time
decrease economic advantages due to tool
changes
IML production for short run is expensive

OPPORTUNITIES
Need for integration all along that value
chain;
Developing a domestic supply base;
Explore new market of food, service, and nonpackaging applications

THREATS
Brand fragmentation
Retailers command market dynamics
Theres risk of keeping stock & design
changes
The greater number of SKUs, with each SKU
requiring its own label, is a deterrent

IML is one of the fastest growing markets in the injection molding

business, estimated to grow at 6-10% annually for the next several years
The label industry has now reached the inflection point for moderately
high growth on a small base, and with this kind of capacity creation one
can expect a CAGR of at least 19 per cent over several years. There is also
the opportunity and the need to aim for 25 per cent growth because this
industry is still small and because it can be technology and export driven.
