IML in Europe is a mainstream process used extensively, but not exclusively, for food
packaging
An estimated 85 % to 95 % of rigid food packaging there now uses IML, as do some
durable goods such as returnable beer crates.
IML reportedly started in the U.S. in the early 1980s
By Procter & Gamble and Owens-Illinois Packaging (now part of Graham Packaging), the
first applications were blow molded HDPE bottles with paper labels coated with a heatactivated adhesive.
Problems with label quality, feeding, and handling kept IML activity low-key in the U.S.
until the mid-1990s, when it was rekindled by molders attempts to eliminate secondary
operations, reduce the scrap rate from post-mold labeling, and to produce a no-label
look similar to that of blow molded articles.

Advantage of IML :

In-mold labeling (IML) is the smallest of the four major groups of labeling
formats, accounting for around 2 percent of the total global label volume of
39,500 million square meters (61,250 million msi) in 2006.

Market Potential :
China and India are really taking over the market for IML. The reason, apparently,
is that the perception of IMLs extra cost often isn't borne out in reality, according
to the In-Mold Decorating Association (IMDA), When the labor and extra steps
involved in secondary operations for applying glue-backed labels or pressuresensitive labels are considered, then IML can compete on a cost basis.
The global IML market was 790 million sq. meters of material in 2011.
Last year, IML demand was growing at about a 22% annual rate in South America.
Worldwide, the growth rate was about 3.25%.
Global IML volume will rise from about 829 million sq. meters to roughly 975
million sq. meters in 2016.

India is one of the few countries in the world where packaging growth is the
leading segment. the packaging industry in India which includes glass, metal
and plastic rigid and semi-rigid packaging, flexible, corrugated, and board
packaging, is of the order of Rs.18,000 core (approximately US$ 4 billion).

Barriers:
Some common issues that come up in IML applications:
Resin Selection
Durability
Tool Cleanliness
Label Construction
End of Arm Tooling (EOAT)
Label Over molding
High Voltage Arcing
Misaligned Label
Issue of Speed
Time Consuming job set-ups.

The IML format faces challenges from other labeling and product decoration
technologies as under :

18
Heat transfer labeling cannot quite reach the high level of printing of IML
Heat transfer labels do not provide top-to-bottom coverage
IML's polypropylene labels compare to heat transfer foils and wraps provide a much
higher degree of heat resistance, scratching, pealing, tearing and fading.
The pails the same size, people perceive it as a bigger container It gives a better shelf
presence and a stronger billboard effect.
IML labels offer better resistance to moisture, chemical, scratching and surface scuffing
because of the material PP compare i.e. to paper
For injection molded tubs, all four side sand the bottom can be decorated with a single
label during the molding process, some thing that pressure sensitive can not do.
Light weight of part, because label displaces synthetic granulate equal to own volume
(granulatesavings10-15%)
Most of the inks for screen printing are applied with a heavy coverage so the ink
layer takes a long time to dry. The printed products must be dried.
Decoration in made in several steps (one color per time)
High costs of storage of blank products and during the steps of decoration
Usually used with few colors to be cost attractive (low image quality)
STRENGTH
Product resilience, security and durability
Stronger growth potential IM-IML
Lower cost than other labelling methods.
Higher packaging line speed
No extra labelling step
Light weight of containers
reduction in label defects
Resistant to product staining
WEAKNESS
More complex value chain
Higher tooling cost and automation.
Longer set-up time
decrease economic advantages due to tool
changes
IML production for short run is expensive
OPPORTUNITIES
Need for integration all along that value
chain;
Developing a domestic supply base;
Explore new market of food, service, and nonpackaging applications
THREATS
Brand fragmentation
Retailers command market dynamics
Theres risk of keeping stock & design
changes
The greater number of SKUs, with each SKU
requiring its own label, is a deterrent

Raw Material :
A polymer is a large molecule consisting of lots of repeating smaller units, called
monomers.
PP, HDPE and LDPE polymers are the raw material for plastic containers manufactured
by means of the injection or blow molding technique.
Suppliers :
Haldia petrochemicals
Exxon Mobil

BENEFITS :
Cheap, safe and clean plastic parts.
Thin wall molding reduces resource consumption and cuts weight, reducing fuel
usage and carbon emissions in shipping further supporting sustainability efforts.
Allows faster cycle times compared with thicker walled plastic parts. This is good for
injection molders because it reduces their delivery lead time and cost per part.
Lighter parts reduce fuel emissions in automotive applications.
Made from recyclable plastics such as polypropylene (PP) in food packaging.
Some thin wall parts can be made from sustainable plastics

MARKETS:
The trend towards thin wall molding continues to increase in many plastic
industries as plastic material and energy costs continue to rise and delivery
lead times are squeezed.
TRENDS:
Labels are no longer mute! They are talking while they walk in the supply
chain. Thus a qualitative way of describing the variety of labels may be as
decorative, compliance, security, and AIDC labels. AIDC stands for Automatic
Identification and Data Capture.
