Ql. (a) Determine the magnitude and direction of P, so that the resultant of P
and the 900 N force is a vertical force of 2700 N directed downward.
Use parallelogram and laws of cosine and sine.

A block is supported by the rope-and-pulley arrangement as shown in


Figure Q2(a). If the system is in static equilibrium and cable AB has a
tension force of 200 kN, determine the mass of W.

A beam ABCD is supported by a roller at D and pinned at A as shown


in Figure Q3(a). Determine the reaction at support A and D.

shown in Figure Q3(b). The connection at E is fixed to the ground. The

A 5 kg triangular block ABC is placed on two steps as shown in Figure Q4.


(a)

It is required that the triangular block is in a state of equilibrium when


placed on the steps.
i.
Determine the minimum value of the coefficient of static
friction (jus) between the triangular block and the steps so that
the triangular block will not slide down the steps.

ii.

Determine the friction force at points D and E.


(5 marks)

iii.

(b)

Show that the triangular block will not overturn about point
E.
(5 marks)

If the value of the coefficient of static friction (jus) between the


triangular block and the steps is 0.4, determine a force F to be applied
along AC so that the triangular block is in a state of impending motion
up the steps.

Q6. A position of a particle is given by s = 12 + dt2 - t3, where s is distance in
meter and t is time in second. Determine:
(a)

velocity of the particle when the particle is at 17 m,


(4 marks)

(b)

maximum velocity of the particle,


(4 marks)

(c)

acceleration of the particle when it stops momentary,


(4 marks)

(d)

position of the particle when the velocity is maximum, and


(4 marks)

(e)

travelling distance by the particle in 3 seconds.

A horizontal force F is pushing a 10 kg block; firstly, along a rough horizontal


surface AB, and then up an inclined rough surface until the block stops at C as
shown in Figure Q7(a). The force F remains horizontal as it pushes the block
up the inclined plane. The value of the coefficient of kinetic friction (//*)
between the block and both the horizontal and inclined surface is 0.25. Figure
Q7(b) and Figure Q7(c) show the a-t and v-t graphs of the block as it is in
motion from A to C.
(a)

Determine the angle 6 of the inclined plane.

Using the principle of work and energy, determine:


i. the velocity of the block as it passes by point B (vb ) given that
the distance from A to B is 30 m,

The three balls shown in Figure Q8(a) have a mass m = 20 kg each. If


A has a speed, uA = 30 m/s just before a direct collision with B,
determine the speed of ball C after collision. The coefficient of
restitution between each ball is e = 0.9. Neglect the size of each ball.

A block having a mass of 5 kg is suspended from a spring with stiffness


k = 500 N/m, as shown in Figure Q8(b). If the block is pushed up by y
= -50 mm from its equilibrium position and then released, what are the
amplitude and the natural frequency of the vibration? Assume that
positive displacement is downward.
