Earthquake Engineering ETABS

project
Introduction:
Designing structures to resist seismic loads is probably the most challenging area of
structural engineering. Not only is the magnitude of the forces generated by an earthquake
the largest that the building is likely to experience, but they are also much more destructive,
unpredictable and difficult to characterize.
For these reasons earthquakes cause tremendous damage to life and infrastructure even in
countries that have modern construction codes and practices.
To combat earthquake destruction, the only method available to ancient architects was to
build their landmark structures to last, often by making them excessively stiff and strong.
Currently, there are several design philosophies in earthquake engineering, making use of
experimental results, computer simulations and observations from past earthquakes to offer
the required performance for the seismic threat at the site of interest. These range from
appropriately sizing the structure to be strong and ductile enough to survive the shaking with
an acceptable damage, to equipping it with base isolation or using structural vibration
control technologies to minimize any forces and deformations.

Previous Studies:
Early stages of earthquake engineering and earthquake resistant design have been shaped by
major earthquakes that occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries such as the 1855
Edo, 1891 Mino-Awari, 1923 Kanto earthquakes in Japan, the 1906 San Francisco
earthquake in the United States and the 1908 Messina earthquake in Italy. Before the
development of earthquake resistant design, structural design of buildings was conducted
considering only gravity and wind loads. Gravity loads, unlike seismic actions, can be
estimated with relatively high confidence and the buildings are expected to withstand static
vertical forces in the elastic range. Therefore, the immediate reaction of structural engineers
to the idea of earthquake resistant design was to approximate the seismic action by static
horizontal forces that will be resisted elastically. After the 1908 Messina earthquake and
recommended designing the building withstand a static horizontal force of an approximately

10% of the total building weight. This method has then been adopted by building codes
worldwide. The Los Angeles Building Code adopted in 1943 addressed the importance of the
height of the building for estimating the seismic response for the first time. Thus, a
"building flexibility" associated with the number of stories was introduced. In 1952, 20 years
after the development of the concept of response spectra, the period of vibration of the
building was introduced as a means of determining the base shear coefficient. In 1957, a
coefficient considering the inherent ductility and energy dissipation characteristics of
structures was introduced in the base shear equation. It was not before 1978 that seismic
hazard was explicitly considered in the seismic design recommendations, namely by Cornell
who developed contour maps for effective peak acceleration (EPA) and peak velocity (EPV).
A period-dependent lateral force coefficient based on the ground motion spectrum was
proposed to be used in the structural design similar to the design spectrum that is used today.
In the past, the Analysis and design of structural building with earthquake resistance was
manual design. Nowadays , New tools for analysis and design of earthquake resistant
building structures are being used on a daily basis, new softwares are being used for the
analysis and design of seismic building structures with a high level of accuracy and a
realistic simulation process such as the Etabs , Staad , Robot structural analysis... etc.

Significance of study:
Automated earthquake design of building structures proved higher accuracy in analysis and
design of earthquake resistant building structures and a smaller margin of errors and more
realistic and reliable simulation of the building's performance during earthquakes than
manual design of earthquake resistant building structures.
In addition to that, earthquake design softwares provide multiple design solution for the
problems that may encounter the designer in real life, leading to more flexibility in the
design and even more innovative structure designs than ever before.

Objectives:
In this project, there are many objectives have to be gained such as:
-Analysis and Design a structural building structure that can resist earthquakes using
ETABS 2015 depending on UBC97 code.
-Getting experience in using a software (ETABS 2015) in seismic analysis and design of
building structures.

About ETABS:
ETABS is an engineering software product that caters to multi-story building
analysis and design. Modeling tools and templates, code-based load prescriptions,
analysis methods and solution techniques, all coordinate with the grid-like geometry
unique to this class of structure. Basic or advanced systems under static or dynamic
conditions may be evaluated using ETABS. For a sophisticated assessment of
seismic performance, modal and direct-integration time-history analyses may couple
with P-Delta and Large Displacement effects. Nonlinear links and concentrated
PMM or fiber hinges may capture material nonlinearity under monotonic or
hysteretic behavior. Intuitive and integrated features make applications of any
complexity practical to implement. Interoperability with a series of design and
documentation platforms makes ETABS a coordinated and productive tool for
designs which range from simple 2D frames to elaborate modern high-rises.
ETABS automatically generates and assigns code-based loading conditions for
gravity, seismic, wind, and thermal forces. Users may specify an unlimited number
of load cases and combinations.
Analysis capabilities then offer advanced nonlinear methods for characterization of
static-pushover and dynamic response. Dynamic considerations may
include modal, response-spectrum, or time-history analysis. P-delta effect
account for geometric nonlinearity.

About Project (Location, Area & Layout):

-

The project is located west Amman (on the west region of Queens Rania
street).

The project area is nearly 240 m2.

Its a residential building with 6 stories. All stories have the same shape
(symmetrical).

Base story height is 4m and each story is 3 m.

The total height of the building is 19 m.

There is no information about the soil.

- Layout of the building :

Methodology:
Before using Etabs:
- The building is a Reinforced Concrete building.
-The Structural seismic analysis is based on UBC97 code (which the Jordanian code is the
same of UBC97 code).
- Since the building is located in west Amman which is considered to be a zone 2B seismic
zone, the zone factor Z=0.2.
-Since there is no information about soil profile, use soil profile SD.
- Using UBC97 to find Ca & Cv coefficients, Ca = 0.28 & Cv = 0.4.

- The Structural system used is Building frame system with shear walls, so R=5.5.
-Since it is a residential building, the occupancy category is 4, so Importance factor
I=1.0.
- Seismic load will consider once as a static load and another as a Dynamic using
response spectrum.
Note that beams have been added, so the new layout:

- Steps:
1- Use A-Cad to draw new layers (Columns, Slabs, Shearwalls, Beams only) on the
architectural drawing and save it as a dxf file to import it on Etabs.
2- Open new file on Etabs, select the units, number of stories, story height... etc.
3- Define Material that will be used in the building.
4- Define frame sections (Beams & columns).
in the project, beams have been defined with cross section 400X500 mm. And
columns cross sections 500X300,500X200,600X300,400X200 mm.
5- Define Wall section. In this Project shearwall=200mm.
6- Define Slab section. In this project slabs thickness=250mm.
7- From Arch layers (plan view), all structural elements have been added.
8- To consider the seismic load as static load once in X direction and another in Y
direction, Define it from load patterns, select UBC97,enter the minimum eccentricity,

enter Ct=0.02ft to calculate the period, enter R=5.5, Z=0.2, and soil profile S D , enter
importance factor I=1.0.
9- The seismic load as a static load has been defined.
10- Now, to consider the seismic load as Dynamic load, define the response spectrum
function according to UBC97 & Ca & Cv values.
11- Define the load Cases Dynamic Ex , Dynamic Ey , and select the response spectrum
you have defined, enter scale factor= g/R as initial scale factor, after analysis if
Dynamic E < 0.85 Static E , you have to modify scale factor by multiplying it with 0.85
Static E / Dynamic E.
12- After that, define mass source, since our building is residential, the mass source is
only the total dead load.
13- Add an automatic mesh for the slabs and walls.
14- Now, replicate this story for 6 stories, since the building floors are symmetric.
15- Add Diaphragm joints for each story, since we want to consider as a frame.
16- Add restraint joint for the foundation (fixed in all directions).
17- Define Live loads, Dead loads as a uniform loads on slabs.
18- From load Combinations, select default load combinations that are based on ACI
code.
19- Now, Run the model to analyze it, then design.
