AUDITIONS
4 backstage 07.14.16
BY BENJAMIN LINDSAY
id you watch Chris Evans and Robert Downey
Jr. in Captain America: Civil War and think,
I could do that? Well, now you can! Marvel
Universe Live! is holding auditions July 29 in
Chicago, and Backstage has the inside scoop on how to land
the superheroic role of your dreams.
This is a very grand, live stunt spectacular, the touring productions head casting director, Jessica Ferris, told
Backstage. We see the Avengers taking on the villains
who are trying to take over the world and trying to take
over the population.
In other words, if youre a stunt performer or actor with
impressive specialty skillsand better yet, if youre a Marvel
fanthis may be the perfect job for you. But the audition
process is far from easy.
We keep people for up to six hours doing very, very
physical work, Ferris said. The day begins with a 20- to
30-minute orientation in which prospective performers are
told what the touring process entails. Its not for everyone,
and were looking for people who will thrive in our environment rather than suffer in it, Ferris said. From there, talent
is put through a general warm-up routine of rolls, kicks,
punches, and calisthenics to get the blood flowing and to
test performers initial stamina and strength levels. Then
comes what Ferris calls the pair fight.
Each person is given a specific Marvel character that
they need to embody, and the pair learns the fight choreography for the very first time onsite, she explained. After
the pair fights, well keep the appropriate people to stay
behind and demonstrate their solo specialty skill.
Then comes a group fight audition between the performers from whom casting would like to see more of, and the
day wraps from there. In the
past, auditions have attracted

to showcase their specialty.
JESSICA FERRIS,
CASTING DIRECTOR
Furthermore, men and women
with long hair should have it
pulled back, and all jewelry, piercings, and other accessories
should be removed prior to the audition. And while this is a
stunt-heavy show, performers with their acting chops tuned
will especially rise to the top.
We really put them through their paces as far as requiring
them to do all of these specialty things and then asking them
to try and layer in characterization [through] the delivery
of lines and [building] character relationships to the other
members of their character family. Theres a whole lot to it,
Ferris said. Guests are coming in to see stories being told by
their favorite characters, and the believability factor has to
be alive and well onstage at all times. Most of [the performers] dont have this kind of [acting] background, so we do
extensive training with them in how to portray the character
specifically that they are cast forto make that superfan feel
like they are seeing the genuine article.

for Star Wars: The Force
Awakens sensation John
Boyega. The young actor,
who is currently wrapping up
production on the eighth installment of Star Wars, has nabbed
his next blockbuster with Pacific
Rim: Maelstrom. The sequel
to the 2013 Guillermo del Toro
film has been bouncing around
Universal Pictures for a few years
where its production has been
stopped and restarted numerous times. This time its going
forward without del Toro in the
directors seat, making way for
Daredevil showrunner Steven S.
DeKnight, who will join returning
cast Charlie Hunnam and Rinko
Kikuchi. The revealed plot for the
new film so far is minimal, but will
reportedly continue a few years
after the last film and deal with
the war between humans and the
sea creatures set on destroying
them. Sarah Finn is casting the
project that will begin shooting
at the beginning of August in
Canada, China, and Australia.

Principals did that for me, particularly as
a comedic actor. [These] characters are
grounded in real personal flaws. That was
a great comedic turn for me to not worry
about, Whats the punch line?
On working with Danny McBride.
Ive been a real fan almost from the very
beginning. I loved Eastbound & Down.
I thought his Kenny Powers was just
crazy and remarkable. Hes really good at
creating a character that feels like its him,
Danny, and its nothes such a generous
and kind and smart person.
On acting for the sake of the craft.
Billy Porter said something like, If
you arent willing to do theater in the
living room, you arent willing to do it on
Broadway; that really resonated with me. I
can remember being new to New York and
feeling like I have all of this talent, I have
all of this potential, and this is where its
going to happenand feeling like I can only
do that at this level on Broadway. I would
encourage actors to pursue the craft, and
when were actually in pursuit of the art
and the craft, we find and we are found.

Joan D. Saunders

New York

JOAN D.
SAUNDERS
has booked
several jobs
through
Backstages
casting notices.
Most recently, she starred as Joy
Cartwright in Echoes of Ebola, a
play set in Africa during a deadly
virus outbreak.
Joy Cartwright is a woman with
a lot of conflict and a lot of history,
Saunders says. Shes been in
charge of a foreign aid program for
many years, living in Africa. Her
early altruistic motives are being
buried by money, and her lack of
a relationship is something she is
unwilling to examine.
Saunders herself is a Backstage
devotee, subscribing, reading, and
booking for over a decade. Casting people use Backstage to find
actors, and, especially in the last 12
months or so, I have been getting
invitations to audition before I have
even seen the casting notice for the
project, she says.
Among these roles, Saunders
says shes open to anything, but is
particularly interested in strong
women, roles that go more in-depth
about the woman. Whether shes a
judge or a grandmother who was a
stay-at-home mom, I like roles that
show the strength a woman has
when it comes to dealing with life.
And if theres some dark comedy
thrown in, thats best of all!

On what else the film has in store, Cho is contractually tight-lipped, but he does reveal that
audiences can expect something he considers
tonally closer to the original series.
When I first read the script, it felt like the
series to me. I dont know exactly why, he
says. Theres an examination of the core principles of Starfleet, which are very optimistic.
The whole idea of Were the Earthlings going
out in peace to learn more is a beautiful and
optimistic interpretation of our species.
He is also quick to note early bumps the
project met in preproduction. Two years ago,
Roberto Orci (who co-penned the first two
Star Trek iterations) bowed out of Beyond,
leaving Simon Pegg (who acts in the film as
chief engineer Montgomery Scotty Scott)
to rewrite the script with Doug Jung. To
thwart the production further, the budget and
release date were left the same; and as if that
werent enough, director Justin Lin (Fast &
Furious 6) was himself brand-new to the Star
Trek world. Abrams, who directed the first
two installments of the series, moved into a
producer role.

Finding Neverland
Former Backstage cover star Tony Yazbeck (On the Town) recently joined long-running
Broadway musical Finding Neverland, in which he plays Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie. Yazbeck
photographed life offstage at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre for us; you still have an opportunity to see
Yazbeck and company in person before Finding Neverland closes Aug. 21.
(1) This cast is truly an incredible balance of heart, humor, and extraordinary talent. This was at
one of our rehearsals during the day, with Courtney Balan, Emma Pfaeffle, Ron Todorowski, Colin
Cunliffe, and Josh Lamon. (2) There are some things in my dressing room that keep me going eight
shows a week. The top shelf holds my physical therapy tools: a DaVinci tool to take pressure out of
my neck and upper back; a lacrosse ball to iron out knots; and my roller, which is so important before
a show starts. The second shelf holds bananas (which I eat before the nursery scene in the first act);
Throat Coat tea for intermission; Total Shake, a perfect rice-based food supplement with all the
vitamins and minerals necessary to keep you healthy; and Endura, a powdered drink mix that
restores electrolytes. I highly recommend all of this for a long Broadway run! (3) They just called
places. Im all dressed and ready to get onstage! (4) I have a glorious view of Times Square and
the bustling streets of Broadway outside my dressing room bay window doors. I am all set at
intermission with my top-of-Act-2 costume on. (5) The Neverland fans outside the stage door
are just the best. Some of them have seen it 10 times. Others have traveled across the globe to see
our show. They are always so excited to experience this wonderful story!
