Benjamin Bratt
By Mark Peikert

Tell us about The Infiltrator. The whole film is based on an

actual event that occurred in the 80s, when a federal agent went
undercover and, rather than follow the drugs, smartly decided to
follow the money. What he discovered was that there were otherwise
reputable bankers knowingly, openly laundering money for the
Colombian drug cartels. So Bryan Cranston plays the agent and I
play Roberto Alcaino, a gentleman who outwardly is a genuine jewelry
salesman but moonlights by selling drugs. This guy was a lieutenant
in the hierarchy of Escobars cartel. He did time, but as I understand
it hes out now. Im holding my breath until he sees my portrayal.
How did you get your SAG-AFTRA card? I was in my second year
at the American Conservatory Theater, having just returned from a
summer at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and had just been cast
as Romeo and was very excited to start rehearsals when a casting
director came through San Francisco in a national search for the
lead in a TV movie called Juarez. One of the local agents who used
to be on staff at ACT said, Hey, Benjamin, come in. Youre probably
too young, but you fit the profile. And I auditioned, and at the end,
Bob Moronis said, Can you come down on Monday to meet the
producers? And I said, Actually I cant, because I have ballet class
at 10 a.m. followed by auditions class at 11:30. And he grabbed me
by the lapel and shook me lightly and said, Isnt this the opportunity
all of you are waiting for? I jumped on a plane and two days later,
I had the part. And when I saw that check, I said, This is a racket.
Forget grad school, man, Im sticking with TV and film!
What advice would you give your younger self? Slow down, dont
worry so much, stand behind your craft, rely more consistently upon
that which you were taught, and trust it. Ive always approached
acting from a very workmanlike perspective. It is in fact a craft, and
as such its important to become an expert, [to] know what your tools
are and how to use them. I wish Id realized its not about ascension to
anything in particular but about enjoying the journey along the way.
Its an amazing blessing to do something you love.
What was your most memorable survival job? I drove a blue and
yellow Super Shuttle van for two 10-hour shifts on the weekend
after a week at ACT of 10 a.m.10 p.m. I wasnt surviving too much.
But the hours were what they were, and I was a good driver and I
knew the city.

Benjamin Bratt has always been a

welcome presence in film and television,
a combination of charming suaveness
and smiling danger. He brings both those
traits to his latest role as a silky smooth
member of Pablo Escobars cartel in The
Infiltrator, and we took the opportunity
to ask him about his career, exhausting
survival jobs, and why you must always
remember that acting is a craft.

UPCOMING
MARVEL
UNIVERSE
LIVE!
AUDITIONS

BY BENJAMIN LINDSAY
id you watch Chris Evans and Robert Downey
Jr. in Captain America: Civil War and think,
I could do that? Well, now you can! Marvel
Universe Live! is holding auditions July 29 in
Chicago, and Backstage has the inside scoop on how to land
the superheroic role of your dreams.
This is a very grand, live stunt spectacular, the touring productions head casting director, Jessica Ferris, told
Backstage. We see the Avengers taking on the villains
who are trying to take over the world and trying to take
over the population.
In other words, if youre a stunt performer or actor with
impressive specialty skillsand better yet, if youre a Marvel
fanthis may be the perfect job for you. But the audition
process is far from easy.
We keep people for up to six hours doing very, very
physical work, Ferris said. The day begins with a 20- to
30-minute orientation in which prospective performers are

told what the touring process entails. Its not for everyone,
and were looking for people who will thrive in our environment rather than suffer in it, Ferris said. From there, talent
is put through a general warm-up routine of rolls, kicks,
punches, and calisthenics to get the blood flowing and to
test performers initial stamina and strength levels. Then
comes what Ferris calls the pair fight.
Each person is given a specific Marvel character that
they need to embody, and the pair learns the fight choreography for the very first time onsite, she explained. After
the pair fights, well keep the appropriate people to stay
behind and demonstrate their solo specialty skill.
Then comes a group fight audition between the performers from whom casting would like to see more of, and the
day wraps from there. In the
past, auditions have attracted

to showcase their specialty.
JESSICA FERRIS,
CASTING DIRECTOR
Furthermore, men and women
with long hair should have it
pulled back, and all jewelry, piercings, and other accessories
should be removed prior to the audition. And while this is a
stunt-heavy show, performers with their acting chops tuned
will especially rise to the top.
We really put them through their paces as far as requiring
them to do all of these specialty things and then asking them
to try and layer in characterization [through] the delivery
of lines and [building] character relationships to the other
members of their character family. Theres a whole lot to it,
Ferris said. Guests are coming in to see stories being told by
their favorite characters, and the believability factor has to
be alive and well onstage at all times. Most of [the performers] dont have this kind of [acting] background, so we do
extensive training with them in how to portray the character
specifically that they are cast forto make that superfan feel
like they are seeing the genuine article.

[Meet the Maker]

Katie Dippold, Ghostbusters

BY JACK SMART

CREATING COMEDY REQUIRES

something of an alchemical reaction. The combination of writing,
directing, and acting that made the
1984 film Ghostbusters an instant
classic, for example, can hardly be
replicated. But as a co-writer and
co-producer, Katie Dippold knew
how to help make the stars align, for
a completely original rebootthis
time starring four of todays best
female comedians.
We just kind of started from
scratch, Dippold says, remembering how writer-director Paul Feig
approached her during ComicCon not long after the two worked
together on the blockbuster comedy The Heat. When he thought
about doing [Ghostbusters] with
four women and doing it as a reboot,
that became exciting to him: bringing in a new story, new characters,

8 backstage 07.14.16

having a new origin story.

So with Dan Aykroyd, Harold
Ramis, and Ivan Reitmans big shoes
to fill, the two got to work. Dippold
says trying to re-create Peter Venkman, Bill Murrays iconic character
in the original, would have been
futile. It became, Who are the characters? And I started off thinking
about how today, scientists dont
really believe in the paranormal.
So what would that mean, in 2016,
to believe in ghosts as a scientist?
That started the first character,
played by Kristen Wiig.
Wiig plays Erin Gilbert, a theoretical physicist and aspiring academic
ashamed of her past life pursuing
the paranormal. Her old partner and
fellow author Abby Yates (Melissa
McCarthy) still believes in ghosts
and is proven right. Together the
two recruit Abbys nuclear engineer

friend Jillian Holtzmann (Kate

McKinnon) to defeat a mysterious
and growing paranormal force taking over Manhattan.
And then we really wanted to
have that everyman, explains Dippold. Someone who feels like iconic
New York. Someone working for the
MTA felt really fun to ussomeone
who sees a ghost, someone who is
incredibly intelligent in their own
ways. Subway operator Patty Tolan
(Leslie Jones) unites the four as a
team, providing the ghostbusters
with a sense of family.
Developing each character individually is an important first step in
the writing process, says Dippold.
But their interpersonal dynamics
are what really give the audience
a sense of who they are. All of my
favorite movies and TV shows,
comedies, are seeing people work

Feig made final decisions when it

came to casting, but Dippold found
herself emailing drafts with different actors in mind. He said, Lets
just write the script first and then
figure it out. Certain people would
pop into my head and its kind of fun
to write that way.
Especially, of course, McCarthy.
I just think shes so goddamn
funny, says Dippold with a laugh.
She has such an amazing range.
And Melissa being scared is really
funny. In fact, she adds, several
drafts were written with McCarthy
in mind for the role of Patty.
The fact that McCarthy and her
co-stars are particularly adept at
improvisation meant Dippold and
Feig had to craft a screenplay that
allowed room for it. I try to make
the script as sound as possible, but
then I hope that they can fly with it
and bring their brilliance in, Dippold says of the actors. Having the
four funniest people, you want them
to just do their thing.
I feel like Ghostbusters is so
important to everyone involved in
this movie, she adds. Everyone
grew up loving it, the cast and crew.
It just felt way more collaborative.
The original had a lot of improv
on set, and we wanted that same
spirit. When you have a cast who
are not just hilarious but very gifted
improvisersI mean, Melissa and
Kristen are like improv godsespecially for this project it was really,
really welcome. Not even welcomebegged for!

But like most 10 percenters, I

jumped at the chance to attend a
showcase that was being held at
a well-known acting school.

It had the same basic setup as

a workshop, without the honorarium. The 20 actors took turns
putting up scenes, and then we
had a question-and-answer session. On the plus side, the level of
talent was promising and I ended
up bringing one of the actors in
for a meeting. On the negative
side, I saw more than a handful
of basic rsum mistakes, the
kind Ive been seeing for years.
So at the risk of sounding like a
broken record, lets address some
of those mistakes right now with
the hope we can eradicate them
once and for all!
Six of the actors had their
home addresses written on their
rsums. And two had no contact informationnot even an
email address.
Under TV, a few actors listed
the names of the characters they
played as opposed to the credit
they received. The fact that you
were Mr. Ellison on Criminal
Minds means nothing. Id rather
know if the part was a guest star
or a co-star.
Several actors listed workshops
theyd attended under Training.
Thats a major no-no. Taking
a workshop with an agent or a

Now, here are some of the

more entertaining moments
from that showcase:
One of the actors gave me an
autographed headshot.
Another could barely read his
sides because his hands were
shaking so badly. I can understand being nervous, but whats
going to happen if I sign that guy
and send him out to audition for
a network casting director?
A young lady wore so much
perfume, I actually started to
hallucinate.
Under Special Skills, one actor
listed Conversational American
Sign Language. (Just think
about that for a moment.)
Word to the wise: Recurring
and reoccurring do not mean the
same thing.
And finally, do not print your
rsum directly on the back of
your headshot. What are you
going to do if you have to update
it? Or worse, do you really want to
piss off a ticking time bomb like
me by handing me a rsum that
smears ink all over my hands,
which I then proceed to smear all
over my shirt? Thats the kind of
behavior that makes me want to
sign up for 10 more workshops!

On grounded comedy.
[Actors are] always trying to find a piece
thats going to push us, thats going to
make us turn a corner that we havent
turned in the past. I really feel like Vice
Principals did that for me, particularly as
a comedic actor. [These] characters are
grounded in real personal flaws. That was
a great comedic turn for me to not worry
about, Whats the punch line?
On working with Danny McBride.
Ive been a real fan almost from the very
beginning. I loved Eastbound & Down.
I thought his Kenny Powers was just
crazy and remarkable. Hes really good at
creating a character that feels like its him,
Danny, and its nothes such a generous
and kind and smart person.
On acting for the sake of the craft.
Billy Porter said something like, If
you arent willing to do theater in the
living room, you arent willing to do it on
Broadway; that really resonated with me. I
can remember being new to New York and
feeling like I have all of this talent, I have
all of this potential, and this is where its
going to happenand feeling like I can only
do that at this level on Broadway. I would
encourage actors to pursue the craft, and
when were actually in pursuit of the art
and the craft, we find and we are found.

WHY WATCH THAT PODCAST

BY MOLLY EICHEL
CHRISTINA FAISON AND CHAUNCEY BELLAMYS PODCASTS NAME,
Why Watch That, is apt. On it, Bellamy, the critic, and Faison, his
referee, discuss the merits and faults of a movie or TV show from an
actors perspective.
How does Why Watch That
benefit you as actors? Christina
Faison: Our podcast is different;
its not just criticizing and picking something apart, like most
critics do. We look at it from a
performers perspective. Its so
great to watch these performances
and learn from them, even from
those that arent so great. It helps
with my writing and directing.
The more we watch and talk about

it, the better we become as artists.

Chauncey Bellamy: We are the
audience. As an actor, you think
of it from your perspective, you
consult with directors and writers.
But you have to think about how
people are going to receive your
work. The podcast has gotten me
thinking about that even more.
What do you think you bring to the
podcast as actors? CF: We bring

Why is it important to have the

performers perspective? CF: There
are people who dont know what
its like to work 15 hours or to dive
into character. CB: If our audience
members are actors, were respecting whats going on, not just trying
to find whats wrong. [Film and
television are] collaborative arts.
For our podcast, we take the title
seriously: Why watch that?
What are some great performances
youve witnessed? CF: We got
to see a screening of Selma,
and I remember thinking, Wow.
[David Oyelowo] was using tricks
that I will definitely be using
in my work. Its good to bounce
that off with another actor [like
Chauncey], and see what he
notices and what he takes away
from it.
What advice do you have for other
actors? CF: See as much as you
can. If youre really blessed [to be
working as an actor in New York],
you have access to all sorts of
performances. If its in a multiplex
or a tiny indie theaterwatch,
watch, watch. And then ask the

is this worth seeing? CB: Why
Watch That allows you to figure
out what you are as an actor. Thats
your currency, and this podcast
has allowed me to answer that
question. Part of the reason we did
the podcast was thinking about
what we wanted to be and how we
could contribute.

Dont be afraid to try different ways to stretch yourself as an actor.

Just keep on creating, no matter what it looks like, and youll be satisfied.

Most recently, she starred as Joy
Cartwright in Echoes of Ebola, a
play set in Africa during a deadly
virus outbreak.
Joy Cartwright is a woman with
a lot of conflict and a lot of history,
Saunders says. Shes been in
charge of a foreign aid program for
many years, living in Africa. Her
early altruistic motives are being
buried by money, and her lack of
a relationship is something she is
unwilling to examine.
Saunders herself is a Backstage
devotee, subscribing, reading, and
booking for over a decade. Casting people use Backstage to find
actors, and, especially in the last 12
months or so, I have been getting
invitations to audition before I have
even seen the casting notice for the
project, she says.
Among these roles, Saunders
says shes open to anything, but is
particularly interested in strong
women, roles that go more in-depth
about the woman. Whether shes a
judge or a grandmother who was a
stay-at-home mom, I like roles that
show the strength a woman has
when it comes to dealing with life.
And if theres some dark comedy
thrown in, thats best of all!

JOHN CHO HAS

NEVER BEEN MUCH
OF A DREAMER,
BUT HES
Considering his requisite dream roles over a
mid-June lunch in lower Manhattan, the Star
Trek Beyond star pauses.
Sometimes I feel like I dont dream big
enough, he admits. I would love to do
Shakespeare, either onstage or on film. Id like
to be in a Western. I want to walk the basesI
want to do all the actor-y stuff. Im trying to
think of these things that Ive trained myself
not to think aboutbecause of my color.
Cho is among the many entertainers voicing
the explicit and implicit prejudices AsianAmerican actors face in Hollywood. In the
industrys post-#OscarsSoWhite landscape,
Asian representation on film has come under
particular scrutiny this year, with fellow
leaders of the cause like Fresh Off the Boat
breakout Constance Wu and Master of None
maestro Aziz Ansari not shying away from
speaking out. Cho himself just received the
2016 Visibility Award at the fifth annual V3
Digital Media Conference in June.
It helps, too, that hes got a thrivingand
unexpectedsocial media campaign at his
back. Havent you heard? Chos been memed.
Led by the Twitter account @StarringJohnCho
and created by New Yorkbased digital
strategist William Yu, the meme sees Chos
likeness Photoshopped onto posters for
the years buzziest blockbusters: The
Martian #StarringJohnCho; Jurassic World
#StarringJohnCho; and the list goes on.
I think its delightful, the actor says of his
involuntary viral success. (He is not at all affiliated with Yus efforts, but he did treat him to
dinner the evening of this interview. I mean, I
should, right? he asks, laughing. I spend a lot
of time thinking about him and being affected
by him. I feel like I should know him!)
The fact of the matter is [the hashtag] is
not really even about me, Cho continues. Its
ostensibly about me, but the guy is clearly trying to get people talking about a real issue. It
felt like he was contributing something very
positive to the discussion in an ingenious way
through these posters.
Incidentally enough, Star Trek is just the

14 backstage 07.14.16

kind of movie the #StarringJohnCho campaign

would show the actor headlining. In filling
George Takeis shoes as Lt. Hikaru Sulu in
director J.J. Abrams 2009 reboot of the iconic
sci-fi franchise, Cho helped usher in a decade
of prestige tentpoles that continue to captivate
critics and fans new and old.
The franchises third installment, Star
Trek Beyond, hits theaters July 22 and picks
up some years after 2013s Star Trek Into
Darkness. Cho and his Starfleet comrades
including Capt. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine),
Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto), Nyota
Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and Pavel Chekov (the late
Anton Yelchin)are aboard the USSEnterprise
midway through their five-year mission
when a fleet of malevolent aliens, led by Krall

(Idris Elba), forces them to abandon ship.

Theyre left dispersed and stranded in pairs on
an unknown planet.
What was interesting about that is we ended
up discovering interpersonal relationships,
Cho says of the Enterprises scattered crew. On
the bridge of the ship, Capt. Kirk is at the center
of the bicycle wheel and were all spokes off of
it. These are little things, but the fact that we
were literally speaking to new people, I appreciated that. I was with Zoe for a good chunk of
the movie, who was fun to be with.
This tighter focus on characters relationships off the Enterprises bridge allows for
personal details to come to light in the film,
including, Cho recently revealed to the Herald
Sun, the fact that Sulu is gay.

On what else the film has in store, Cho is contractually tight-lipped, but he does reveal that
audiences can expect something he considers
tonally closer to the original series.
When I first read the script, it felt like the
series to me. I dont know exactly why, he
says. Theres an examination of the core principles of Starfleet, which are very optimistic.
The whole idea of Were the Earthlings going
out in peace to learn more is a beautiful and
optimistic interpretation of our species.
He is also quick to note early bumps the
project met in preproduction. Two years ago,
Roberto Orci (who co-penned the first two
Star Trek iterations) bowed out of Beyond,
leaving Simon Pegg (who acts in the film as
chief engineer Montgomery Scotty Scott)
to rewrite the script with Doug Jung. To
thwart the production further, the budget and
release date were left the same; and as if that
werent enough, director Justin Lin (Fast &
Furious 6) was himself brand-new to the Star
Trek world. Abrams, who directed the first
two installments of the series, moved into a
producer role.
BACKSTAGE.COM

This is a big studio movie, [but] behind the

scenes, it felt somewhat independent in the
sense that they were just going with their gut
a lot of the time, Cho says of the filmmakers
approach. It was put togetherand I consider
this a complimentin an independent fashion.
This wasnt focus-grouped.
Luckily for Lin, the shoe fit. Despite his Fast
& Furious pedigree, this indie-inspired, intuitive take on Pegg and Jungs material placed
him cozily in his element. The directors earlycareer roots are in independent cinema.
Further, Star Trek Beyond marked a
reunion for Cho and its helmer, who first
connected on Lins Better Luck Tomorrow.
The 2002 feature, which followed the misadventures of a group of Asian-American high
schoolers, was one of several indie projects by
and for Asian-Americans in which Cho starred
during the late 90s and early aughts, perhaps
foreshadowing the actors actions toward visibility to come.
At the time, it felt very much like we
were waking up and it felt like there might
be a movement happening, especially with

Asian-American cinema, Cho says. It still

remains thrilling to be in a cast with a bunch
of Asian-Americans; that was really so much
of what it was. Its so rare that youre in a scene
with all Asians that it feels almost sinful.
Even at that age, I knew how strange that was
because I was a person who watched movies
and never saw myself.
That sentiment further fed Chos desire to
originally get involved in Star Trek when
Abrams came calling five years later.
I think [Star Trek] was the first thing
that Id been in that 12-year-old me wouldve
watched, he says. At the time, I was disenchanted and was slogging my way through jobs,
and then this came along, and I really wanted
to do it. That had a lot to do with some of the
playful elements, but also the social importance
of it, the cultural relevance. How important it
was for me to see George Takei on television as
a kid and go, Oh, so at least hes there! I really
wanted it. My wife and I were on our delayed
honeymoon in Italy when I got the [casting]
news. It was a nice honeymoon. It turned out to
be kind of exactly what I wanted.

Theater Superheroes
The Kilroys continue to fight for representation of female and transgender playwrights
By Jack Smart

16 backstage 07.14.16

The Kilroys

the base of it its a parity problem.... One of the

issues is the way in which female voices are
perceived as telling smaller stories. A domestic
drama by a man is August: Osage County. A
domestic drama by a woman is, How cute, that
sweet little drama.
Inspired by the Black List, Franklin Leonards
annual list of unproduced screenplays, the
Kilroys decided to spread the wordloudly and
boldlyabout plays written by playwrights who
identify as female or transgender. The List, as it
is known, is composed of works anonymously
recommended by over 200 influential readers
of new plays. First published in 2014, the Lists
third edition emerged June 21, this time comprising only works that have never received full
professional productions.
When we came up with it, initially we were
like, Maybe in the third year people will pay
attention, but people were excited about it
right away, says Feinberg. The List dismantles
the argument that producing plays by women

or transgender playwrights means more risk

for nonprofit regional theaters, she adds. The
vast majority of ticket buyers in America are
women; it stands to reason audiences crave
stories that reflect their experiences. Were
trying to help theaters put their money where
their mouth is.
Ramping up their efforts, in December the
Kilroys will also release a book of monologues
from plays on the Lists. I edited [the book],
and its pretty incredible to see all these powerful voices in one place, Feinberg says. Its the
least lame monologue book Ive ever seen.
The fact that industry professionals are using
the List to recommend and even stage new
plays by female and transgender playwrights is
worth celebrating, but as Feinberg points out,
the List will only be truly successful when we
dont need it anymore. One day well hopefully not have to celebrate [gender parity]. That
would be the end goal of the Kilroys in general:
to not have the List.

AT A 2014 PANEL DISCUSSION AT

Washington, D.C.s Arena Stage, a comment
was made by Ryan Rilette, the Round House
Theatres producing artistic director, about
plays written by women; he stated there
were not enough yet in the pipeline. The
remark proved controversial, mostly because,
as many female playwrights, dramaturgs, and
other thespians agreed, it was untrue.
By then, Annah Feinberg and several of her
friends in Los Angeles had already formed the
Kilroys, a group of playwrights and producers fighting for gender parity in the American
theater industry. Named after the Kilroy Was
Here graffiti tags left in unexpected places by
World War II soldiers, the group was created
after several discussions about the misinformed mentality held by artistic directors like
Rilette across the country. As Feinberg puts it,
the Kilroys came about because we were so
sick of talking about it.
Our countrys regional theaters, many if
not all have mission statements about reflecting the world that exists, she says. Many
even have diversity in their mission statements. And yet every year when those season
announcements come out, its the same white
guys doing their thing. And nothing against
those white guys, but theres something much
more systemic at play if that keeps happening
over and over again.
Upon moving to L.A. in 2013, Feinberg, a
writer and director for stage and screen (including Gretch & Tim and HBOs Veep), began
to meet with other female acquaintances in
similar lines of work, Zakiyyah Alexander,
Bekah Brunstetter, Sheila Callaghan, Carla
Ching, Sarah Gubbins, Laura Jacqmin, Joy
Meads, Kelly Miller, Meg Miroshnik, Daria
Polatin, Tanya Saracho, and Marisa Wegrzyn
among them. We all knew each other peripherally from theaters in New York and Chicago,
Feinberg remembers. We threw a little dinner
party and it just so happened to all be female
playwrights and dramaturgsnot totally by
accident, thats who I tend to hang with! We
started talking about the natural frustrations in
the field.
So what are those frustrations? Where to
begin? responds Feinberg with a laugh. At

backstage life

Finding Neverland

Former Backstage cover star Tony Yazbeck (On the Town) recently joined long-running
Broadway musical Finding Neverland, in which he plays Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie. Yazbeck
photographed life offstage at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre for us; you still have an opportunity to see
Yazbeck and company in person before Finding Neverland closes Aug. 21.
(1) This cast is truly an incredible balance of heart, humor, and extraordinary talent. This was at
one of our rehearsals during the day, with Courtney Balan, Emma Pfaeffle, Ron Todorowski, Colin
Cunliffe, and Josh Lamon. (2) There are some things in my dressing room that keep me going eight
shows a week. The top shelf holds my physical therapy tools: a DaVinci tool to take pressure out of
my neck and upper back; a lacrosse ball to iron out knots; and my roller, which is so important before
a show starts. The second shelf holds bananas (which I eat before the nursery scene in the first act);
Throat Coat tea for intermission; Total Shake, a perfect rice-based food supplement with all the
vitamins and minerals necessary to keep you healthy; and Endura, a powdered drink mix that
restores electrolytes. I highly recommend all of this for a long Broadway run! (3) They just called
places. Im all dressed and ready to get onstage! (4) I have a glorious view of Times Square and
the bustling streets of Broadway outside my dressing room bay window doors. I am all set at
intermission with my top-of-Act-2 costume on. (5) The Neverland fans outside the stage door
are just the best. Some of them have seen it 10 times. Others have traveled across the globe to see
our show. They are always so excited to experience this wonderful story!
