Thoreau, The Pope and the Indian. A Shared Vision
75th Thoreau Annual Gathering

ABSTRACT: Connie Baxter Marlow, author, filmmaker and futurist discovered
twenty years ago that she and Thoreau, the mystic, shared a vision of a
future in which the cosmology of the Native Americans would one day be
integrated into the prevailing paradigm. In this talk she will show how a
Mexican Catholic Bishop Samuel Ruiz, Pope Francis and Native American
scholar Chris Peters envision a society transformed by the melding of the
indigenous worldview and the western perspective on the nature of the
Universe; with clips from Thoreau Scholar Bradley P. Dean, PhD. and
Penobscot Elder Arnie Neptune.
BIO:ConnieBaxterMarlow,BAEconomics,has been bringing the mystical Thoreau to the
table for decades. It began with her discovery that Thoreau resonated to the indigenous
worldview and could see what the indigenous people could see, and knew that the Native
Americans have something to bring to humanity now. This arrow-headed character to my
mind it has not been deciphered. It was originally winged but for a short flight, but it still
wings its way through the ages bearing a message from the hand that shot it. HDT.
Having spent 20 years with visionary Native American elders, Connie has an understanding of
the indigenous connection to an expanded reality, and in the late 90s Brad Deans articulation of
Thoreaus mystical nature, combined with Tom Blandings in-depth insights and resources gave
credence to her discoveries. She produced the DVD series THE AMERICAN EVOLUTION:
Voices of America in 2004 in which Brad Dean (Thoreau Scholar), Richard Smith (Thoreau
impersonator/Interpreter), Arnie Neptune (Penobscot elder) and others bring forth the mystical
Thoreau, the indigenous knowledge of the nature of reality and the mystical nature of Katahdin,
the sacred mountain of the Wabanaki.
She went on to create three theatrical readings which she and Andrew Cameron Bailey have
performed at Thoreau Society Annual Gatherings and around the country since 2011.
