to humanity, are deeply intertwined. Massive nuclear weapons budgets consume
resources that are badly needed to address the climate crisis. And even a modest
deployment of such weapons could sharply worsen climate change risks, triggering a

On Thursday, August 28, 2014, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. on the 10th floor of the UN Church
Center, an expert panel will discuss sustainability and nuclear weapons. Panelists include
Marie Dennis, Jonathan Granoff, Guy Quinlan, Hiro Sakurai and Elizabeth Zwarev.
We are very pleased to share a recent announcement regarding one of our speakers,
Jonathan Granoff, president of the Global Security Institute. Jonathan has been nominated
for a 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for his pursuit of peace and security and a world free of

The Congregation of Notre Dame
On June 10, more than 20 people from a wide range of NGOs gathered at the Church
Center for the United Nations to strategize ways to raise awareness of the humanitarian
and environmental costs of nuclear weapons.
There was lively engagement on issues that ranged from the links between nuclear
weapons and climate change (see lead story) to how to bring a nuclear disarmament
modality to the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals. Bruce Knotts, president of the
NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security, moderated the strategy session for
NGO representatives who hailed from a wide variety of peace, disarmament, and

Renewed efforts in global verification and monitoring of nuclear threat agreements will
boost confidence, build political will and address nations nuclear non-proliferation and
security challenges, according to a new report series from the Nuclear Threat Initiative
(NTI).
Innovating Verification: New Tools & New Actors to Reduce Nuclear Risk is a four-report
series that summarizes the recommendations from NTIs Verification Pilot Project. NTI
had more than 40 technical and policy experts from around the globe explore new
approaches to verification, concentrating on methods that could spur near-term progress
on nuclear security and pave the way for progress on arms reduction. More...
