BORIS GETS ISRAELS BLESSING

ISRAELI AMBASSADOR Mark Regev has welcomed Boris
Johnsons appointment as foreign secretary as Jewish MPs
expressed delight at new roles in Theresa Mays government, writes Justin Cohen.
The former London mayor and leading Brexit campaigner, who led a trade delegation to Israel last year, replaces Philip Hammond, the incoming chancellor.
Regev told Jewish News: Israel welcomes the appointment of Boris Johnson. During his time as mayor of London,
relations flourished between Israel and the capital. We look
forward to working with the new foreign secretary to further
strengthen ties between the UK and Israel. This partnership
makes us both more prosperous and secure.
Johnson received a rapturous welcome throughout Israel
last November but provoked anger in the West Bank in the
wake of forthright comments on the boycott of the Jewish
state which he said was supported by corduroy-jacketed,
snaggletoothed, lefty academics in the UK. Palestinian officials accused him of adopting a misinformed and disrespectful pro-Israel stance and said he risked creating protests if he
visited the West Bank, although Johnson claimed his comments were very much whipped up on social media. However, Johnson is also on record condemning Israels military
action against rocket attacks as disproportionate and ugly.
Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood is tipped to continue
in that role, but eyebrows have been raised by the addition
to the foreign office team of Sir Alan Duncan, who has pre-
viously suggested settlement endorsers should not be

considered fit to stand for election or even to be members
of political parties.
There was also a warm welcome for the new Communities
Secretary Sajid Javid, who has addressed the Holocaust Educational Trust and Conservative Friends of Israel in recent
months, calling on all Britons to join the fight against antiSemitism and extremism.
At last Septembers HET dinner, the then business secretary
referred to dinner party anti-Semites, speaking of respectable, middle-class people who would recoil in horror if
you accused them of racism, but are quite happy to repeat
modern takes on age-old myths and slanders about Jews
Who cant condemn the murder of Jewish children in France
without a caveat criticising the Israeli government....
Meanwhile, former Tory deputy chairman Robert Halfon is
among the Jewish MPs awarded roles in Theresa Mays new
government. The campaigning Harlow MP, who attended
David Camerons cabinet and worked for CFl before entering
Parliament, was appointed as an education minister.
Also given a ministerial job is Michael Ellis, the MP for
Northampton North who becomes the deputy leader of the
House of Commons and an assistant whip. Saying he was
delighted and honoured, he told Jewish News: The role is
particularly exciting as the office upholds the rights and interests of backbencher MPs from all parties in the House. I will
endeavour to support the House to the best of my abilities.
Chakrabarti sidesteps question over peerage

SHAMI CHAKRABARTI, who led
an inquiry into anti-Semitism
within Labour, has refused to say
whether she has been offered a
peerage by the party.
The former Liberty director,
who is a Labour member, dodged
questions about her political ambitions and whether Jeremy Corbyn had offered her a place in the
Lords. Her report, which concluded that Labour was "not overrun by anti-Semitism, was
labelled a "whitewash" by critics.
Appearing on Jewish TV channel J-TV, Ms Chakrabarti was
pressed on her future within
Labour. She said she would
probably not run as an MP, but
repeatedly sidestepped ques-
tions about a peerage.

talk about my future ambitions at
this point, she said, adding: You
can ask the question and Im
going to evade it at this point.
Labour leader Mr Corbyns
spokesman said: We dont comment on Labour Party nominations to public bodies or
recommendations for political

appointments.
Chakrabartis review recommended that Labour members
should not use terms such as
Zioand should steer clear of
invoking Hitler, particularly in debates about Israel and Palestine.
But it found that Labour is not
overrun by anti-Semitism.

LAWYERS ACTING for the firm

challenging the prime ministers
authority to leave the European
Union have suffered anti-Semitic
abuse, a top barrister has said.
Lord Pannick QC, acting for
City law firm Mishcon de Reya,
told Sir Brian Leveson at the
Royal Courts of Justice that
racist abuse had been directed
at staff.
The firm is coordinating several efforts to challenge the
governments authority to trigger Article 50, arguing instead
that only parliament can collec-
tively start the process of leaving the EU, following this years
Brexit vote.
However, the firm founded by
Victor Mishcon, is now being
targeted by anti-Semitic abuse,
said Pannick, who is also Jewish.
The publicity that has accompanied notification of the
legal issue has provoked a large
quantity of abuse directed at my
solicitors, said Pannick. It is
racist, it is anti-Semitic and it is
objectionable. It is contempt of
court for people to make
threats.

Chief: Labour must get a grip on anti-Semitism

THE CHIEF RABBI has told an influential
committee of MPs that anti-Semitism
in the Labour Party has got worse
since Jeremy Corbyn became leader,
and that the partys inquiry led by
Shami Chakrabarti missed several
opportunities, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.
His comments, alongside those of
other prominent Jewish leaders, were
made to the Home Affairs Select Committee, as parliamentarians concluded
their own review of anti-Semitism in
the UK.
Mirvis said that although the overall
context was that life is good for Jews
in the UK, weve got a problem, and its
got bigger. He added that anti-Semitism was on the increase in Britain, although not as worrying as it is on the
continent, and said the increase was in
part owing to trigger points, such as
events in the Middle East.
He said Jewish students going to
university for the first time were being
demonised on campus for their views,
but said the problem was best exemplified within the Labour Party, where antiSemitism had become more brazen.
Since the leadership of Mr [Jeremy]
Corbyn, it has become more acceptable
for elements which used to be a fringe
group to now appear centre stage and
to express their ideology in a more
open and confident manner, he said.
Asked about Labours record on
racism and of welcoming Jews, he
added that this raised added
concern about the recent shift, saying:
We need to encourage Labour to get

Committee chairman Keith Vaz said
the Labour leader had fully denounced
anti-Semitism within the party, but
Mirvis said he shared the concerns of
many Jews that anti-Semitism is not
being taken seriously enough under
Corbyns leadership.
Mirvis added that Ken Livingstones
comments about Hitler being a Zionist
were anti-Semitic, saying: This is not
the first time hes started to talk about
the Holocaust when asked about Jewish
people and Jewish issues.
It has in the past been pointed out to
him that this is offensive, so to mention
Hitler, of all names, in that context, only
exacerbated the situation... I believe
they were intended to offend.

He said there were positive features
to Chakrabartis report, such as her guidance on the use of specific terminology,
but pointed out his reservations,
including his primary concern about
a lack of definition.
I cant understand why she calls for a
moratorium on historic instances of antiSemitism; what is wrong is wrong, he
said. There is also no reference to events
at the Oxford University Labour Club, or
the [subsequent] Royall Report. Resolutions were published, but the report was
not. One wonders what there is to hide,
and why is it that the Royall Report has
been kicked into the long grass.
He added: [My] main reservation is
the absence of a definition of anti-Semitism. You cant deal with a phenomenon

if there is no definition of it. I cannot
understand why [Chakrabarti] did not incorporate the EUMC [European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia]
working definition into her report.
On the subject of online hate, Mirvis
said social media companies should do
more to filter anti-Semitic messages. He
added: Freedom of expression, of
speech, is an integral part of our great
society, but you need to express that
freedom with responsibility and, where it
is irresponsible, we as a society should
be doing something about it, he said.
Also appearing were the Community
Security Trust director Mark Gardner,
Jewish Leadership Council chairman Sir
Mick Davis, and John Mann MP, who
heads the All-Party Parliamentary Group
Against Antisemitism.
Corbyn hecklers
legal challenge
THE MAN who heckled Jeremy
Corbyn at last years Labour
Friends of Israel event has
mounted a legal challenge to
remove him from the ballot following the leadership bid by
MP Owen Smith.
Jewish donor and former parliamentary candidate Michael
Foster, whose family is reported
to have donated 400,000 to
Labours general election campaign, wants the Labour leader
to have to secure the support of
51 MPs, the minimum needed
for any challenger.
Labours national executive
committee voted by 18 votes to
14 that, as incumbent, Corbyn
did not need to garner enough
votes to meet the threshold.
Speaking on Radio 4s Today
programme, Foster said it was
a question of interpretation
of the rules, whether they give
the incumbent the right to
stand without the relevant
nominations.
Several lawyers, including
Michael Mansfield QC, have
concluded that Corbyn should
be automatically on the ballot,
saying: The rules are unambiguous.
Last year, after Corbyn addressed Labour Friends of Israel
supporters at a conference
fringe meeting in Brighton,
Foster shouted: Say the word
Israel, say the word Israel.

IN FOCUS: TERROR ATTACK IN NICE

THE ISRAELI city of Netanya showed
solidarity with Nice this week as thousands gathered to commemorate the
victims of the horrific terror attack that
left 85 people dead.
Netanyas mayor, Miriam Fierberg,
said: Just days ago we celebrated
Bastille Day here, in this square. We
never imagined that wed be back here
under these circumstances. Now we
mourn alongside our twin city.
Netanya residents are only too aware
that their city has also endured numerous terror attacks, notably the Park Hotel
bombing in 2002 which claimed 30 lives.
Last month alert pedestrians thwarted a
stabbing attack in the citys busy market.
The French ambassador to Israel,
Patrick Mizonab, led the crowd in
a minutes silence. Afterwards, he
praised Israels stoicism: The choices
before us are very clear to surrender or
to resist. I recognise more than ever the
desire for life and freedom and not even
the slightest desire to surrender.
We were back there [in Nice] two
weeks ago, for a holiday, said Nicole
Hasson, who attended the rally with
her husband Serge and their grandson.
Actually we feel angry about the
tragedy. We think the police could
have done something about it.
Nearby, two teenage girls sobbed
and typed furiously into their mobile
phones. Stella and Ludivine emigrated
to Netanya 10 months ago from Nice.
Many friends and relatives still live in
Nice.
Thank God, everyone is okay, Stella
said. She is sixteen, and attends a
French-speaking boarding school in
Haifa, where she is studying for her
Bagrut matriculation. Ludivine is looking
for a job. Maybe in a flower shop, I
dont know. Its hard.
Knesset Member Ayoub Kara reminded the crowd: We are all Israel.
We are all Nice. We are all Netanya.
Kara, a member of the Druze community, is a Likud party member and serves
as deputy minister for regional cooperation. Im not Jewish, but I care just
as deeply for the Jewish people as if
I was Jewish, he told the crowd, to loud

appreciative applause.
He continued: People in the west
live innocently, receiving refugees from
the Arab world who then carry out attacks mainly against the French people. The unfortunate fact that Arab
leaders did not condemn terrorism is
criminal and brutal.
Martine Vaknin, deputy mayor of
Nice, was on holiday in Netanya when
the tragedy struck. Im crying for my
city, for the children of my city, she
said. Netanya understands what Nice
is going through.
A French singer led the crowd in
emotional renditions of the two national anthems, the Marseillaise and the
Hatikva.
Meanwhile,
news emerged
this week of how
four 18-year-old
Jewish women
had a lucky escape during last
Thursdays terror
attack.
The
group,
teaching assistants from Gan
Yisrael Nursery,
were also watching the display
and crossed the
road just seconds
before the truck sped through.
They were crying and completely
traumatised after seeing so many bodies
mangled; they could not speak, said
Esther, from the local Chabad, who did
not want to give her surname. It was a
miracle they were not physically hurt,

thank God.
Still others had lucky escapes. Orly
Rosin, who lives in Hampstead, flew out
to visit her parents last week, and had
planned to watch the fireworks with her
mother, but stayed in as she felt unwell.
I was shocked when I woke up, she

said, after placing flowers and cards on
the promenade. That so many people
were killed in an area that I was supposed to be, its a feeling of disbelief.

France must learn from Israels bitter experience

LAST WEEK'S appalling attack in Nice, which

killed 84 civilians, offers another horrifying
reminder of the threat from Islamist violence.
It is the latest terrorist assault on France,
which has already witnessed the killing of
Jewish students and teachers in Toulouse, the
Charlie Hebdo shootings and last Novembers
massacre in Paris.
France is an attractive target for radicalised

Muslims because it is a bastion of the values
they despise most. The French emphasis on
secularism has outraged jihadists with the ban
on the Islamic face veil causing particular anger.
The country is also an epicentre of free
speech where criticism of religion, including
satire, is (rightly) welcomed. For most of us,
this land of liberty is a resplendent symbol of
civilisation and freedom. For the jihadists, it is
a hated symbol of decadence.
Inside the banlieues, where a modern generation of young Muslims often feels alienated
from their host country, criminality and radical-
isation abound, especially when militant

Salafism is being preached in prisons and on
the internet. It is no surprise that the country
has sent as many as 1,800 recruits to fight with
IS in Syria. In addition, France has taken an
assertive stance against overseas Islamist extremism, sending troops to Mali, Afghanistan
and Syria. Thus the great Republic is seen as a
barrier to the warped fantasies of a Caliphate.
The jihadist threat requires concerted action.
The global campaign against IS should be
stepped up with increasing intensity. Intelligence must be co-ordinated to ensure that
those who are on the radar of the authorities
are intercepted and their plots foiled. Above

all, France should learn some valuable lessons
from its Israeli counterparts.
For decades, the Jewish state has had to face
a protracted threat from terrorism. Israel has
used human intelligence to penetrate Muslim
communities, using informers where necessary.
In addition, her major public events have been
properly protected with roads blocked off
and city centres given multiple layers of
security. Israelis cannot afford to be complacent
about terrorism, and neither can Europeans.
In the long run, enhanced counterterrorism
will be more effective than a hashtag.

Tenth anniversary tribute to Alan Senitt WJR backing plan for refugees
LORD SACKS joined members of Alan Senitts
family in paying tribute to the murdered former student leader at a moving event to mark
the 10th anniversary of his passing, writes
Justin Cohen.
The Chief Rabbi Emeritus said the one-time
BBYO president and UJS chair would have
been one of the great leaders of our time
had his life not been so cruelly cut short at the
age of 27 during a visit to Washington to work
on a presidential campaign.
Recalling his leadership of the Coexistence
Trust, which worked to unite Jews and Muslims to fight hate, he said in a video message:
He was someone who lived by his ideals and
changed the world for the better. I want to
shed a tear for what might have been and
give thanks for what was.
One of the most inspiring young people
of his generation, it was a privilege to know
him and we will always cherish his memory.
Seven of the past 10 UJS presidents
attended the memorial event at JW3, in addition to MP Luciana Berger and many of the
other young leaders who were inspired by
Alan. The event was organised by Nicki
Cohen, a close friend of Alans and trustee of
Alan Senitts was described as a true mensch
the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust. His mother

Karen described him as a warm, loving
bright jewel who was at ease with whoever he met and put them at ease too. She
added: His smile would always light up the
room. He was a true mensch in every sense

of the word and the world is a far poorer
place without him. He is always with me, but
how I long to see that smile, feel his embrace
and hear stories about his day and plans.
She said his legacy lived on through his
friends and the Trust, which supports causes
close to his heart, including young leadership
and interfaith.
Danny Stone, who worked with Alan on the
Coexistence Trust and now heads the All-Party
Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism,
said: While obviously sad and painful, it was
a lovely occasion and a chance for so many of
us who were inspired by Alan to remember
and pay tribute to him together.
A simultaneous event was held in Israel. Dan
Kosky, who knew Alan from UJS and organised
the gathering with Mandy Sinai, said: It was
a great opportunity for Alans friends in Israel
to share fond memories of a special person.
Some of us had never met each other
before testament to Alans enduring ability
to bring people together. I have no doubt that
were he with us today, Alan would be doing
good and meaningful things on behalf of
Israel.
A LEADING JEWISH charity has backed a government programme allowing faith groups to sponsor Syrian refugees coming to Britain.
World Jewish Relief welcomed the groundbreaking Home Office announcement this week,
as the new Home Secretary Amber Rudd said it
would bring communities together to support
these often traumatised and vulnerable families.
Sponsors will provide housing for the family and
help them integrate into UK life, access medical and
social services, arrange English tuition and support
them towards employment and self-sufficiency.
Interest is expected to be high among Jewish
communities, after an outpouring of sympathy in
recent years, with many religious Jewish leaders seeing echoes of Jews own experience as refugees.
Sponsoring organisations, which can be registered charities or community interest companies,
must show the consent of the relevant local authority
and a comprehensive plan for resettlement to apply.
WJR has said it hopes to help at least 1,000 of
the 20,000 Syrian refugees expected to arrive in
the UK by 2020. It already helps distribute aid to
refugee camps in Greece and Turkey, and started
helping the first refugees to find work in Bradford.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby joined
WJR in welcoming the Full Community Sponsorship scheme, saying it was a privilege to welcome
a family to live in the Lambeth Palace grounds.
Naz Shah: I was ignorant about anti-Semitism

A LABOUR MP suspended over antiSemitic posts on social media this
week admitted she was ignorant
about discrimination against Jews
and said she was now determined to
win back the communitys trust.
Naz Shah, who was readmitted to
Labour this month, said she had not
considered anti-Semitism as racism
and did not understand at the time
her comments were anti-Semitic. She
now accepts the posts were offensive,
but said she was not an anti-Semite.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4s World at
One, the Bradford West MP said she
now wishes she had apologised and
resigned straight away as parliamen-
tary aide to shadow chancellor John

McDonnell when the comments came
to light on the Guido Fawkes website
in April. However, she was advised to
see whether the story was picked up
by newspapers. She also said Labour
should have moved faster with her suspension to deny David Cameron the
chance to demand it at Prime Ministers
Questions in the House of Commons.
In a 2014 Facebook post before
becoming an MP, Shah shared a
graphic of Israels outline superimposed onto a map of the US under the
headline Solution for Israel-Palestine

States, with the comment: Problem
solved. Other posts used the hashtag #IsraelApartheid above a quote

saying Never forget that everything
Hitler did in Germany was legal.
She says the most clearly anti-Semitic comment she made was in a post
in which she said the Jews are rallying to skew the result of an online poll
on Israels military action in Gaza.
Shah said her instinct was to issue an
immediate apology and said: One of
the tough conversations I had to have
with myself... that same day was God!
Am I anti-Semitic? Yes I have ignorance, yes everybody has prejudice
and unconscious biases, but does that
make me anti-Semitic? And the an-
swer, I was really clear, was: No, I dont

have a hatred of Jewish people.
Shah said the posts were in the context of conversations she was having
over Israels military action in Gaza, and
that she was ignorant of their wider
significance. Ive had conversations
with lots of people and theyve explained... what the connotations were
of what Id done and how its hurt people, she said. Asked whether she now
accepts the comments were antiSemitic, she said: Absolutely. The language that I used was anti-Semitic.
She added that Labour needed to
address the issue of anti-Semitism
within its ranks.

Community organisations join campaign against online hatred Ex-UJS chair elected JLM director
KEY COMMUNITY bodies have joined a
campaign to tackle online hatred, including anti-Semitism.
Reclaim the Internet is an initiative to
fight abuse on the web, launched by
Labour MP Yvette Cooper during a conference on Monday.
It has gained the backing of the Community Security Trust, which said it was
very happy to lend our expertise at its
opening panel event.
It added: The social media organisations are moving in the right direction, but
overall the responses remain inconsistent
and inadequate, especially regarding mass
campaigns against individuals.

are flown to show support for
Hezbollahs resistance... It is direct incitement against both
Jews in Israel and Jews here.

group We Believe in Israel say
they will transform the world
of pro-Israel campaigning with
the launch of their new website.
A host of online resources
such as toolkits, flyers, multimedia materials and campaign
links will allow activists to join
the fight for Israel from the
comfort of their smartphones, the group
said on Tuesday.

new campaigning
tools will give proIsrael activists across the
country the chance to raise concerns about these sorts of issues

The group, which supports a
two-state solution and advocates for an approach of dialogue and conversation as a
surer strategy than confrontation, this week said it was
launching its new website with
a protest against Hezbollah
flag-waving.
It follows scenes from the Al
Quds Day march in central London earlier this month, in which

Hezbollah flags were waved on
the streets without arrest.
Akehurst said he was mobilising activists to write to London Mayor Sadiq Khan, asking
him to raise the issue with
the Metropolitan Police to
ensure action is taken against
offenders.

demonstrate
that they are
supporting
the
groups
armed wing,
which is proscribed, and not the
political wing, which is not
an obvious difficulty, since the
two wings share the same flag.
The display of clear support
for Hezbollah has caused deep
distress and alarm to the Jewish community, said Akehurst,
adding that he believed possession of a Hezbollah flag to be a
criminal offence.
That their flag and insignia
were freely flown at an antiIsrael march on the streets of
London is beyond belief. The
police must deal with the offenders as quickly as possible.

Laser pen seller sentenced after child hurt

THE MOTHER of a boy whose eye was burnt
by a laser pointer celebrated a legal victory
this week, after the business owner who sold
the hand-held devices as toys at a school
fair was sentenced to 240 hours community
service.
Lynsey McClure, 47, said she was deeply
sorry for the distress caused when one of
the Chinese-made items she sold at a Christmas fair at Edge Grove School in Radlett
damaged the retina of eight-year-old
Jonathan Marshall from Bushey Heath.
The incident prompted Jonathans mother
Angela to call for a change in the law, with
doctors at Moorfields Eye Hospital saying
only time will tell whether her sons sight
is permanently damaged.
The laser pointers, which are often made
in Asia, are sold as toys, but campaigners say
they could potentially blind someone.
McClure, who owns Busy Happy People,
told trading standards officers that she
had imported two batches of lasers from a
Chinese supplier, which assured her they
were UK-compliant.
However, while the lasers were labelled as
Jonathan Marshalls eye was damaged
having a maximum output of one

milliwatt (mW), experts discovered that
the beam actually had a power of 127mW,
capable of causing permanent eye damage
in less than a quarter of a second.
Last week, St Albans Magistrates Court

heard how McClures brother was left running
the stall and had been asked by the headmaster to stop selling the lasers.
Reacting, Angela said: We wanted people to realise you cant import things and not
check them.
The conviction is believed to be the first of
its kind, linking the sale of a laser to a direct
injury, and comes as the government considers whether to re-designate the pointers as
offensive weapons.
Pilots unions have long called
for sales restrictions, after several incidents in which the
take-off and landing of a
plane has have been compromised by people shining lasers from the ground
up towards the cockpit.
It is illegal to manufacture the pointers in the UK,
but Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden has said there was a worrying
loophole which allows them to be imported into the country.

Gove: NUS now a chilling Charedi callers overheat weather helpline

MICHAEL GOVE has said the National Union
of Students has created a chilling environment
for Jewish students.
The former Tory leadership hopeful and
prominent Brexiteer used his first speech
since returning to the backbenches to defend
academic freedom, particularly when it came to
Jewish students.
Speaking at the second reading of the Higher
Education and Research bill in parliament, the
former education secretary said: At the moment,
there are voices and individuals within the NUS
who have not upheld the best traditions of academic freedom and who have created in some
respects a chilling environment and a cold home
for students, particularly those who are Jewish.
Labour MP Wes Streeting, a former president
of the NUS, agreed with Goves assessment of
the organisation.
The Ilford North MP said: Im also sorry to
have to associate myself with the remarks he
made about the National Union of Students and
in particular its lack of care towards Jewish
students and Jewish representation, adding:
Its a sad day when I find myself agreeing with
Mr Gove on that particular point.
This comes after the NUS was accused by the
Union of Jewish Students of a complete lack of
commitment to Jewish students this week.
The UJS reacted angrily after a meeting of the
NUS national executive committee ended the
traditional practice of Jewish students deciding
the Jewish representative on the Anti-Racism,
Anti-Fascism (ARAF) committee.
New NUS president Malia Bouattia, who has

The Met Office, which is asking for thoughts and feedback

The Met Office acknowledged that the strictly-Orthodox often prefer not to use the
internet and said it wanted
to work with the community to

Board rejects vote to boycott anti-Israel groups

Setting the tone: NUS president Malia Bouattia

A MOTION TO prevent engagement with groups that

boycott Israel was voted down
at a Board of Deputies meeting on Sunday.
The debate was brought forward by the JNFs representative on the body, Gary Mond.
It sought to resolve not to
engage on projects with any
organisation which has expressed anti-Semitism or opposition to the right of the state of
Israel to exist as the nation state
of the Jewish people, or which
has advocated a boycott of
Israel, Israeli citizens, Israeli organisations or Israeli products.
Mond cited a youth training
programme that the Board ran

with Oxfam some years ago as
an example of a group which is
known for its acute hostility to
the state of Israel.
One opponent of the motion,
Joe Millis claimed any boycott,
we are told is destructive, not
helpful, bad, and I agree. Boycotts dont work. They are
bad, questioning why the
Board wanted to implement a
boycott of organisations.
He asked: Can we have it
both ways? Can we have boycotts that are good, or are boycotts bad?, outlining an
opposition to all boycotts because they dont work.
Following the debate, the

Jonathan Arkush said: I give
you this pledge... Not to reach
out to anti-Semites, and not to
embark on another Oxfamstyle project without the affirmative support of the Board.
The motion was overwhelmingly defeated, with only a
handful of votes in support.

this little province between Spain and
France, admits Clarke.
The ski passes have gone up in the
past couple of years but they now

Andorra so the supermarkets are
cheap; this combined with plenty of
Airbnb options means spending
money can be kept to a minimum.

For starters, getting to Copenhagen is

Turkey coup wont derail reconciliation

ISRAELS PRIME minister has
said he hopes the upheaval in
Turkey will not impact on the
two countries reconciliation
deal, following a failed coup
against the Turkish president.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan survived the coup launched last
Friday, and then moved swiftly
to shore up his power, saying on
Sunday the government had
detained 6,000 people.
Benjamin Netanyahu said at
his weekly cabinet meeting:
Israel and Turkey recently
agreed on a reconciliation
process. We assume this process
will continue without any connection to the dramatic events in
Turkey over the weekend.
Israels ministry of foreign
affairs said it respects the democratic process in Turkey and

LAST FRIDAY was a sleepless

night. I was in Bodrum with my
Turkish partner. Wed arrived the
day before from Antalya, where
my mother lives. ISIS attack on
Istanbuls airport was fresh in
peoples minds, but it felt like
business as usual for Turkish politics. Events unfolded in dizzying

and dramatic succession.
Bridges spanning the Bosphorus in Istanbul were closed to
traffic. Then came news of tanks
in the capital, Ankara. Before
long, the Turkish president called

on people to take to the streets.
An attempted coup was taking
place, which was denounced by
senior military figures.
People did take to the streets;
some facing down tanks, mostly
manned by conscripted soldiers
but some went much further.
Images of soldiers being lynched
by angry mobs have caused disquiet among most Turks. But the
crowds did not represent a cross
section of Turkish society, or even

supporters of the governing AKP.
A statement read on public
broadcaster TRT said martial law
had been imposed and the military had assumed control, yet
private broadcasters continued
to conduct interviews with government figures.
The coup failed. Hundreds
have been killed and societys
identity crisis continues, but the
media and opposition have
shown maturity. Unusually, the

four main political parties issued
a joint declaration condemning
the coup and pledging to uphold
democracy. It is to be applauded
that military intervention no
longer has any serious takers in a
country that has suffered from
previous coups.
The government has already
embarked on a purge of people
allegedly sympathetic to Fethullah Glen, the US-based cleric
accused of backing the coup.

Minorities, including Jews, feel
vulnerable from the frenzied
crowds. Calls for the death
penalty to be reinstated are placing crushing pressure on TurkeyEU relations, but rapprochements
with Israel and Russia are unlikely
to be impacted. Turkeys priority
must be to strengthen secular
democracy and reduce tensions,
but I fear we are likely to see
more political upheaval first.

THE 3,000-MILE
COMMUTE
Forget your crowded early-morning train ride. For some people, travelling
to and from work presents a whole new challenge, as Lisa Sanders reports
HEATHROW AIRPORT, on a typical Thursday
night: its eerily quiet at the boarding gate for
the 22:40 British Airways flight to Tel Aviv. A
scattering of Israeli tourists are heading home
with souvenir bags from Harrods and Primark.
But most of the travellers wear the bored,
glazed expressions of Tube passengers.
Apart from announcements over the loudspeaker, the only sounds are the occasional rustle of a newspaper or the soft chimes of laptops
and iPads being put to bed for the night.
Nobody speaks, confirms David, a regular
on this Thursday-night red eye flight to Tel
Aviv. If you see someone you recognise you
just nod. But you try not to make eye contact.
Once Im on the plane I tell the crew not to
disturb me with food. I try to sleep the whole
time on the plane.
David (not his real name) is a senior consultant in the NHS. Come Monday morning, after a
weekend at home with his family, hell see many
of his fellow passengers at Ben Gurion checking
in for the return flight.
Hes one of an extraordinary number of people who have made aliyah but kept their jobs in
the UK. We begin our interview via Whatsapp,
while hes still on the Heathrow Express. An hour
later, hes at his London pad.
Its workable, he insists. When Im here I
see my patients. Im in the hospital from 7am
until 5pm; then I see private patients from 5pm
until 8pm. Thats it, from Monday morning until
Thursday night. Theres no concept of going
home. Im here to work and thats it.
David, his wife and three children emigrated
to Raanana from north London seven years ago.
From the outset, the family decided David
would commute to London, staying with rela-
tives during the week and returning to spend Shabbat

with the family. In practice, its three weekends out of four. On
the weekends when
David is on call
he has to stay in
London.
Ive turned
down work in Israel, he says.
For one thing
theres the language
barrier.
Mainly it was that
Ive qualified into
the English system.
Hes not alone.
Many doctors and dentists, lawyers and entrepreneurs have opted for the
higher financial rewards and career
stability of the commuter life theres
even a Hebrew phrase for it, Al Ha Kav, or on
the line. Nearly all the commuters are in their
forties, male, and married with children.
I know two guys whove been doing it for 20
years, David says.
He doesnt want to give his name, incidentally, not because his bosses might find out (they
already know) but because patients invariably
Google me before they come to see me for the
first time. And it wont look great if they see I
live overseas.
Some commuters keep their relocation a secret. My clients did used to wonder why I was
a bit suntanned in the winter, reminisces Mark

clients that he
had emigrated.
They
all
thought I was in
Edgware, he
says. I got away
with it for five
years. I had a
worry that they
wouldnt understand
why I was living in
what they thought was a
war zone.
Five years in, terrified they
were going to find out anyway, he
decided to confess:
I called them into a meeting and said, I
need to tell you something about my lifestyle.
I told them, and they didnt give two hoots.
Verstandig made aliyah with his wife Meryl
and their four children. Their fifth child was born
in Israel. It was tough, he admits, coming home
exhausted at the end of a hard week. He did
feel guilty at leaving Meryl to be a single parent
when he wasnt around.
My travel agent, Rosie, used to remind me
when it was my wifes birthday and our anniversary. Coming back every Friday with a gift and
taking them out for breakfast or whatever, it just
wasnt enough, he says.
You do have to be very organised, agrees
Danielle Nagler, a legal business consultant
who, as far as she can tell, is the only regular female commuter in the 22:40 BA lounge on a
Thursday night.
I schedule my meetings when I know Ill be
in London. I have to do as much advance planning as possible.
She made aliyah two years ago with her husband and three children. In a way its great, because I can keep my job, my career, and I get to
stay in proper contact with my friends and my
parents, she says.
At the same time, I am around for my kids; it
means I do know what theyre up to on a dayto-day basis.
And yes, it is exhausting. I get home on Friday morning and go to bed for an hour, then I
get up and start cooking for Shabbat.
Before she goes away, she leaves husband
Johnny with strict instructions as to the content
of the fridge, the schedule for the week, carpool
arrangements and so on.
It doesnt always go smoothly. As Nagler says,
Ill get back and be like, why didnt you finish
the chicken I left for you? and hell say, oh, we
had sushi or pizza instead.
After 13 years Al Ha Kav, Verstandig gave
up the long-distance commute and started a
property business in Israel.
I was missing out on home life, he says. I
wanted to get a little bit in before it was too
late. Also, the airlines were getting more expensive. Even with the gold and silver and diamond
programmes. It was getting harder and harder.
Back to David. I had an arrangement with a
bloke called Phil for a year, he tells me.
BA offered free upgrades to the gold lounge
if you registered as a couple. As a commuter,
you spend a lot of time looking for free upgrades. So we registered as a couple.
When hes in London, David gets up at 5am
to Skype his children back in Raanana. They
learn mishnah every day with him, via Skype.
Back at home in Israel, Sundays are devoted
to tasks like meetings at school or other necessities. On Sunday nights, he cooks family dinner.
The reality is I see my kids more now than I
would if I was working in the same country, he
says. You just have to accept youre not there
for the minor crises.
They phone me, but its difficult. I cant give
support, only sympathy. By the time I get back,
its all blown over.
Sea, sun and sand the allure of Israel is a big factor for those who decide to live there, work here

this week, in which he acknowledged the concerns of the Jewish
community and promised to follow through with the Met Police.
This is not dual standards. If another of Londons faith-based
communities felt threatened by

group bent on killing their kin in
some other far-flung corner of the
world, we would be just as appalled, and would help put a stop
to it. Flying the emblem of your
enemy in your face is race-related
provocation, any which way you
look at it, and must be met with
arrests, not officers looking on.
We call on the authorities to
recognise common sense, and for
the community to support our call.

Anti-Semitism has long been a term to

describe Jew-hatred and Judaphobia.
It was a phrase dreamed up by Wilhelm
Maar, a third-rate German journalist who, in
1879 formed a society, the League of AntiSemites, because he saw the one percent of
the Jews in Germany as a threat.
Thousands flocked to his banner, knowing full well what it meant. Before that time,
it did not exist.
In 1819, when violence broke out in
Bavaria, they said kill the Jews, not the
Semites. In the 1930s, Mosleys Blackshirts
attacked the Jews and again after the Second World War. Nobody has ever called me
a Semite but a Jewboy or Yiddo,
yes! The time has come to call it what it is
Judaphobia.

In your article about the Haaretz conference

in London, there was much of the usual
Israeli leftist talk of democracy and democratic values (Jewish News, 7 July 2016).
What they mean, of course, is leftist views
and leftist values, since all who disagree with
them are branded anti-democratic.
Likewise, it is democratic when leftists
control the state and its institutions, but
anti-democratic when anyone else does.
And most anti-democratic of all is
when the institutions of state embody
Torah values and those values that have
kept us as a people for 3,200 years.
It is democratic when leftists win
elections but anti-democratic when the
right does.
Judging from similar expressions on
democracy from those in Britain who
voted to remain in the EU, it would seem
that Israeli leftists are good Europeans.
It is too bad that Europe hates Israel.
Anti-Semitism is, sadly, something that now

While in no way a Corbynite, I dont quite
understand the problem with the Labour
leaders comments that Jews were no
more responsible for the actions of Israel
than Muslims for Islamic states or organisations (Jewish News, 7 July).
His subsequent substitution of Islamic
countries rather than states did not really affect the meaning.
The fact is ordinary Jews are not
responsible for the actions of Israel. For
better or worse, thats down to the countrys
government. Nor, for the same reason, are
ordinary Muslims responsible for the actions of either their own countries or for
Daesh or other terrorist organisations.
Its nothing to do with religion and, on
this occasion, Corbyn has rightly separated
religion and politics.

ABOUT SCHECHITA
Jill Tregenza demonstrates the folly of pontificating on a matter of which one has no
knowledge or experience (Jewish News,
letters, 14 July 2016). Having witnessed
schechita and stunning/captive bolt
slaughter, I can assure Ms Tregenza the former is far kinder to the animal being killed.
In schechita, the animals throat is cut
with a razor-like knife, which severs nerves,
arteries, veins and windpipe in one stroke.
As anyone who has been cut with a sharp
knife will know, it takes several seconds for
pain to be felt. The effect of schechita is to
render the animal unconscious in about 30
seconds. Discomfort is minimal.
For those who consider pre-stunning to
be more humane than schechita, I refer
them to the website Animal Aid; The
Humane Slaughter Myth. If, after reading it,
they still think schechita is more barbaric,
I suggest they embrace vegetarianism.

Ive caught a Pikajew!
Jeremy Corbyns shadow cabinet minister

Graeme Morris said in 2014 that British
Jews who join the IDF are no different from
British jihadis who join ISIS.
He wasnt alone. The New Statesman ran
a piece saying British Jewish students who
do a gap year in Israel, which includes time
in the IDF, must be arrested on their return
to the UK, like British Muslims who train in
terrorist camps and then return to the UK!
I asked the writer if he would arrest
students in the Combined Cadet Force. Or
American students in the Army Reserve
Officer Corps, which trains American military officers while in university.
Why should two weeks in an IDF camp
be equated with terrorism, while genuine
military training in the UK and US would
never be? Is it just Jeremy Corbyns bad
luck that he seems to be surrounded by
people with extreme views?

The impact of Obamas

Middle East negligence
AROUND THIS time in a US presidential year, a
second-term incumbent thinks about legacy. The
Republican and Democratic nominating conventions are a reminder that their White House presence is a thing of the past. As far as foreign policy
and the Middle East is concerned, Barack
Obama doesnt have a great deal to boast about.
He has failed to end the insult to human rights
which is Guantanamo Bay. His pullout of American troops from Iraq and the military bases there
opened the way for the consolidation of power
by Islamic State and its spread across the border
into the Syrian conflict. In Afghanistan, the promise of withdrawal proved to be a pipe dream and
there has been a steady reinforcement of soldiers.
And Obama has made virtually no progress
on Israel-Palestine; instead driving a wedge in
US-Israeli relations that has unleashed something of a backlash against Americas unthinking
support of Israel. This slow change of attitude
towards Israel produced bitter divisions in the
Republican and Democratic parties as they
forged their election platforms.
Donald Trumps manifesto makes no reference
to a two-state solution to the Middle East, much
to the chagrin of Jewish lobbyists. Hillary Clinton
has been required to fight a tricky battle with the
left of the party so as to remove the word occupation to describe Israel in the West Bank.
Obamas one major success is the nuclear agreement with Iran so fiercely contested by Benjamin
Netanyahu. Global monitoring group International

Atomic Energy Agency declared that Iran has met
all its initial nuclear commitments and many of the
international sanctions have been listed.
Among those now supporting the deal is Israeli
Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General
Gadi Eizenkot, who is quoted as saying: Without
a doubt the nuclear deal between Iran and the
West is a historic turning point It has many risks
but also presents many opportunities.
The nuclear threat may have been postponed
for up to five years, but Iran has not been put back
in its box. Eizenkot believes Irans search for hegemony in the Middle East is the real problem. Its support for Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, Hamas in
Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen and its dominant role
in Baghdad are a real and present danger to Israel.
A battle-hardened Hezbollah is Israels most
feared enemy. In Eizenkots view, its growing capabilities threaten the intelligence, aerial and
ground superiority of the IDF.
Where does all of this leave the Israel-Palestine
peace process? The failure of Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry to try to heal the scarred
relationship with Netanyahu and to put its shoulder to the wheel in search of a two-state solution
is proving deeply unsettling. It allows the hardliners in Jerusalem, who have no time for creating
another failed state, to gain the ascendency. It
also has given succour to the Palestinian stabbing
intifada and terror against the citizens of Israel.

The most worrying aspect of benign neglect

in Washington is the gradual erosion of support for Israel as seen in the party platforms of
Republicans and Democrats.
The strength of AIPAC and Jewish lobbyists on
Capitol Hill remains firm but, at the grassroots,
there is an erosion of support. Hispanic, black and
other minorities in the US have much less sympathy for Israel as do younger Jews on university campuses. It is almost certainly too late for Obama to
turn the tide, although historically presidents have
used the Middle East peace process to strengthen
reputations in their final months in office.
The real concerns run deeper. The US and most
of its Western allies long ago decided that a twostate solution was the most civilised way of ending
the Palestinian conflict and diplomacy and foreign
assistance has been calibrated to that end.
By taking the foot off the accelerator, the US
has allowed the possibility of a one-state solution to develop.
If it were a unified state in which all citizens,
Jews and Arabs, enjoyed equal democratic and
economic rights, it might be an acceptable approach. But demographics and Israels right-wing
nationalists are unlikely to allow that to happen.
That is why the next US president needs to
commit to Middle East peace talks early and
show real willpower in encouraging and supporting direct negotiations, so that a safer outcome
for Israel and the whole region is forged.

Corbyns Labour resembles

facism more than socialism
THE FRENETIC state of the Labour Party and
the continuing struggle for leadership has distressed many Labour Party members but also a
growing number in the country. As a former
Labour MP, I am increasingly asked: "When will
it all end what can we do?"
When I last wrote in these columns in December I speculated that the election of Jeremy
Corbyn would create uncertainty and conflict if
he tried to hang on until 2020. However, I underestimated the sheer pace of change and the
mood in the parliamentary party. Working ever
closely with James McDonnell, his producer and
script writer, Corbyn has presided over a campaign of intimidation of individual MPs in their
constituencies, if they fail to accept his left-wing
agenda. These two men are backed by the Momentum group which has recruited thousands
of adherents. I have heard, first hand, of the
frightening nature of their challenge at meetings to those who disagree. The mood now
more closely resembles fascism than socialism.
The uneasy mood in Labour is not confined
to the partys poor showing during the referendum campaign but merely confirms the inability
of the Corbyn/McDonnell axis to provide the
necessary planning and organisation and energy for Labour votes to make a difference for
Remain cause. At the last General Election,
Labour lost support to UKIP in many staunch
constituencies, but it got away with it because
these seats had significant majorities. In a referendum, where every vote counts equally, the
failure of its leadership was harshly revealed.
On issues of particular interest to the Jewish
community, Corbyn and McDonnell have made
no effort to go beyond cursory recognition of our
existence. Yes, they have met a few community
leaders, but little was achieved in establishing a
possible framework in building on the needs of
minorities. The questions of Israel is a the subject
Corbyn and McDonnell cannot stomach, as they
have utterly failed to explain how Israel differs
from undesirable regimes in the region. They see
Israel not as an established democracy in the
Middle East. Hence an invitation from the Israel
Labour Party to visit the country was declined.
At the Home Affairs Select Committee on
Anti-Semitism, Corbyns responses were evasive
and revealed, if anything, a considerable ignorance of the scale of our Jewish community and
of the issues which cause anxiety amongst this
generation whether at home, in business or in
the universities.
A clue to Corbyn and McDonnell's attitude is
revealed by a series of letters written in 20102013, just released by a freedom of information
request. In them, Corbyn described some of the
Jewish states politicians as criminals who
should be banned from Britain. He also claimed
that Israel treats Palestinians with disdain and
that its victimisation of the people of east
Jerusalem is an abomination.
In conversations with a number of Christian
leaders, they expressed surprise that Labour
had made little effort to interest the wider
community here on the issues of anti-Semitism.
They also spoke strongly of the partys minimum support for the Christian minorities who
are actively persecuted in some 50 countries,
including Syria, Somalia and Sudan. In 2003
there were 1.5 million Christians in Iraq, today
a few thousands in Mosul, one of the oldest
Christian communities in the world.
Away from Corbyn and McDonnell there are a
number of supportive Labour members in key
positions. I refer not only to MPs who will challenge the duo but also, significantly, Sadiq Khan,
the mayor of London. In so many way he has provided a consistent message confronting racism
with an unambiguous message to Jews: Any attack on the Jewish community should be considered an attack on all of Londons communities
and everything we stand for. A visit by the
mayor to Israel is now on the agenda.
The author Will Self wrote: The astonishing
thing about Corbyn is hes managing to cock
things up in his own terms." Ultimately, Corbyn
will be dealt with at the ballot box. But vitally all
who care for our democratic process would do
well to monitor Labours emerging policies. Critically in the case of McDonnell an even sharper
scrutiny on his words and actions is advised.

Trumps great virtue is his

outspoken support for Israel
IF I WERE an American Jew, I would unquestionably support Donald Trump for president.
Granted, he is brash, headstrong and bumptious
it would be better if he were not. Granted, too, his
sweeping statements against immigration were
ill-advised. But for me, Trumps greatest virtue
is his outspoken support for Israel and the Jewish
people. Beyond that, I believe whats good for
Jews is good for America, as with Britain and all
other decent democracies.
When I watched Trump addressing the AIPAC
conference, I momentarily believed the festival
had arrived early. Was this real? Could a potential
US president, a contender for the most powerful
position in the western world, really be saying
this? I have rarely heard a gentile politician fulminate so glowingly about Israel. It was music to the
ears to hear a speech so full of condemnation for
all that is despicable terrorism, Islamic hatred,
Hamas, Palestinian violence, Iran and so on. And
from a man who expressed such joy at the
prospect of his Jewish grandchild-to-be!
The late Israeli prime minister Menachem
Begin was arguably the most eloquent, unapologetic politician in the countrys history in advocating Israels case on the international stage.
His articulation of the historic folly of appeasement be it of the Nazis, the Soviet Union, and
the Arabs, was unparalleled. If Trump were to
continue consistently along the lines of his AIPAC
speech, he would as a non-Jew be every bit
as effective as Begin. His critics maintain he cannot be trusted. They say he is capable of whimsically changing his policies to play to every gallery.
Maybe so. However, I doubt anyone could
find any public policy statement Trump has
made that is anti-Israel or anti-Semitic. On that,
he is pretty consistent.
So why are so many American Jews opposed
to Trump? I suggest its because almost endemically much of American Jewry is childishly liberal.
It believes, based on past persecution elsewhere,
that Jews must be allied with every civil rights or
anti-racist movement going. It is blindly addicted
to the wish-washy Democratic Party, despite
its production of highly unsympathetic personalities such as Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama.
It refuses to come to terms with the fact that the
most pernicious anti-Semites of today come from
the political left, and the Islamic extremists with
whom it has forged the unholiest alliance.
Although in most trends and fashions, America
tends to lead Britain, in the area of naive liberalism, Anglo-Jewry has grown up first and moved
rightwards. For many reasons. First, the sheer
hostility of former or current Labour personalities
such as Ken Livingstone, George Galloway and
Jeremy Corbyn. Second, the horrendously antiSemitic boycott, divestment and sanctions movement and the relentless hostility towards Israel
and Jews at universities, much of which finds support within the Labour Party.
Third, by contrast, we see the pro-Israel and

pro-Jewish enthusiasm emanating from David
Cameron, Michael Gove, Theresa May and so
many other senior Conservative figures. This is
a vast improvement on the way things used to
be when, notwithstanding Margaret Thatchers
personal friendship, the Conservatives sported
a craven, sinister camel corps that included
Lord Carrington, Ian Gilmour and Douglas Hurd.
The Board of Deputies and other establishment organisations, like their counterparts in
America, were also painfully leftist years ago.
Thankfully, much has changed.
The boards leadership, reflecting the community as a whole, is now far more conservative in
its outlook. Political realities have forced it to
recognise where todays anti-Semitic dangers really come from.
So, back to Trump. I would offer this message
to our trans-Atlantic brethren. When a right-wing
personality stands up and advocates for Israel,
the Jewish religion and Jewish causes, do not kick
him in the teeth. Dont dismiss his declarations
with righteous indignation and feel you must be
more American than the Americans. Dont accuse
him of being racist, unless he clearly is.
Show appreciation, if not with words then at
least with votes since, in this unstable world,
Jews need all the friends we can get. Besides,
would you rather see America run by an unreliable potential Arabist like Hillary Clinton?

Our interfaith partnership

sets a fine example for all
OVER THE past six months, the Jewish
Volunteering Network (JVN) has been
working in partnership with the Catholic
charity Caritas to launch the latters own
similar body, based on JVNs model.
Our two organisations first combined last
September, through our similar work dealing with the challenges of refugees in Calais.
We began speaking about the tests we
faced regarding volunteering in our respective communities and then realised we
could work together.
Caritas Westminster is a social-action
agency that encourages parishioners to
make a difference in their local communities. Director John Coleby realised that the
JVN model could be easily replicated for
other faiths. The Catholic community had
nothing concrete in place to manage their
large network of volunteers, but shared
JVNs perception that people with faith convictions wanted to reach out and volunteer.
Volunteering can be a complex issue
when it comes to faith-based values. For the
Jewish community, mitzvot and chesed
(kindness) are entrenched in lifestyle choices.
For Caritas, these choices too are strongly
encouraged by the Judeo-Christian tradition,
espoused by the Old and New Testaments
alike, expanded upon by commentators and
demonstrated by the large number of faith
value-based charities in society today.

But volunteering itself is set apart. Indeed, in Hebrew there is a specific verb
to volunteer in lehitnadev.
There are two parts to this word. The first
part renders it a reflexive verb and it is easy
to see why. People who recommend volunteering from their own experiences will include in their reasoning the benefits that
volunteering has brought for them alongside the beneficiaries they support.
The second part the root of the word
is more interesting. The Hebrew letters nun,
daled, vav, spell nadav, are mentioned at
least three times in the Old Testament,
where a conjugation of the verb is associated with contributing to the upkeep of the
portable sanctuary used by the children of
Israel in the wilderness. This contribution
was not compulsory; it was to be given only
by those whose heart made them willing.
The aspect of motivated willingness lies
at the heart of JVNs understanding of volunteering: a self-motivated act borne out of
a willingness to do the right thing.
It is therefore important that all people of
whatever religion are afforded the opportunity to do the right thing. The opportunity
to volunteer, coupled with a willingness to
do what is right, leads to great acts that
benefit all society. It is this essence that was
the catalyst for collaboration.

We have made a unique historical connection between JVN and Caritas. Our teams
spent time together sharing resources in
order to take the JVN model and adapt it for
the Catholic community. As John Coleby
says, Catholics are called upon to reach out
to those most in need in society, and many
are looking either individually or as parish
groups for opportunities to share their time
and skills for the benefit of the wider community. Caritas saw that it wasnt just the JVN
website that was the common thread, but
also its tactics for volunteer recruitment,
management and recognition. They realised
they would benefit from the entire model.
We will continue to learn from each other.
There are plans to expand the partnership,
such as through developing the Winter Volunteering Programme, whereby Jewish volunteers actively ask JVN to find them
opportunities within the non-Jewish community over the holiday season. This could easily
be extended over other holidays. The overriding ambition is that our communities work
together to help to build a better society.
We hope this will lead to more faith linkups in the future, particularly with the Muslim community, establishing the JVN
proposition as the go-to volunteering
model across all faiths.

The Jewish Vegetarian Society has
reached its fundraising target of
25,000 for a new community centre
in Golders Green. The sum will be

Captain Ziv Shilon spoke to MDA UK
audiences about his service as a
company commander in the IDF.

up in front of him while he led a patrol
along the Gazan border. This resulted
in him losing both his hands as well as
requiring 656 units of blood and he

Wolfson Hillel Primary School held its summer fete at the weekend. A total of 768

Pupils connect with Israel

UJIA, the Israeli Embassy, the Jewish Agency for Israel and Masa
Israel Journey UK brought 300 sixth-form pupils from across London
together for the third annual Israel: Get Connected conference, at
JFS in Kenton. Students from JFS, Immanuel College and Yavneh
College came along, and each pupil went to three out of 25
sessions including street art, poverty in Israel, the history of the conflict
and dissenting voices. The aim is to help students engage with Israel
beyond the media headlines to help forge positive, meaningful
connections that they can take forward onto campus. They also
had an opportunity to learn more from many organisations
exhibiting in the Israel Fair, including Israeli universities, the Union of
Jewish Students and Masa Israel Journey UK gap year programmes.
Ambassador Mark Regev spoke about Israels challenges and
successes and about his gap year there, while American-Israeli
comedian Molly Livingstone ended with a touch of Israeli humour.

to celebrate the charitys 20th anniversary. Guest of honour

is such a special organisation making a huge difference to
the lives of disabled children and their families. Amid a
buzzing atmosphere, the new deputy mayor of Haringey,

Film
Genius
Steven Spielberg has added his magic
touch to Roald Dahls The BFG. Francine
Wolfisz hears from the great man himself
e might just be one of the most

popular directors in film history,
but thats no reason for two-time
Academy Award-winning director Steven
Spielberg to sit back on my tush.
Speaking ahead of the release of his
latest film, The BFG, based on Roald
Dahls classic childrens story, Spielberg
reveals he has no plans to slow down
and his passion for making movies is as
strong as ever, as he heads towards his
70th birthday later this year.
The prolific American-Jewish filmmaker who has made his name over
four decades with such iconic Hollywood
hits as Jaws, Raiders Of The Lost Art,
Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park and
Schindlers List added he was proud
to still be doing what he loves most and
was determined to continue.
Spielberg, who is estimated to be
worth 2.4billion, said: Ive seen the one
thing that happens when directors get
older is that they still have the passion
and the determination to tell stories, but
because of their age, the people who hire
you look at you as a relic from the past.
And as Ive said before, I am not
going to be a relic from the past. If I have
to hire myself and form a studio to keep
myself working, then by gosh thats what
Im going to do.
With a young-at-heart attitude, Spielberg has turned his attentions to Dahls
popular childrens story, in his first collaboration with Disney.

The release of the film on Friday also
coincides with this years celebrations
marking 100 years since the birth of Dahl,
whose darkly-comic works for young
readers included James And The Giant
Peach, Mathilda and The Witches.
The BFG which stands for Big
Friendly Giant was published in 1982,
the same year that Spielberg scored success with ET: The Extra-Terrestrial.
For this project, Spielberg teamed up
again with his ET collaborator,
scriptwriter Melissa Mathison. Sadly, the
65-year-old ex-wife of Harrison Ford did
not see the films release, having passed
away from cancer last November.
Spielberg said he was enchanted by
the story of a 10-year-old orphan (played
by newcomer Ruby Barnhill) who befriends a Big Friendly Giant (played by
Wolf Hall actor Mark Rylance). Together,
the pair set out to save England from
child-eating giants by asking for help from
Queen Elizabeth II (Penelope Wilton).
I read it to my kids, said Spielberg,
who has seven children (from his previous
wife Amy Irving and current wife Kate
Capshaw) and three grandchildren.
I picked it up at a bookstore. I was
more familiar with Charlie And The
Chocolate Factory than I was with The
BFG, but it had a great illustration on the
cover of a little girl and this huge giant

with the big ears and I thought itd be a
nice book to buy.
I read it out loud and could understand just why it had become so popular.
But I didnt see it as a film back then
I just saw it as a way of popularising
myself with my family!
The overriding theme in the story
of a main character devoid of a loving
family, who befriends a fantastical creature is one that resonates with Spielberg, who has explored this idea in a
number of films, including ET, Hook,
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and
AI and may be partly autobiographical.
In the past, Spielberg has revealed he felt
like an outsider and an alien, given his
upbringing in an Orthodox Jewish family.
The director cast Barnhill and Rylance
for the lead roles, explaining he felt an
intuitive tickle that both would be
perfect for his film. He described being
a huge admirer of the British actor,
whom he knew would be perfect for his
film after the first day of shooting Bridge
Of Spies, for which Rylance took home
the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
I just had that intuition theres nobody better in the world that could pull
this off other than Mark Rylance and I offered him the part that day, he explains.
Funnily, he didnt realise and thought I
was looking for his opinion on whether

the script was any good!

Rylance is working with Spielberg again
on his next project, Ready Player One,
based on the sci-fi novel by Ernest Cline,
and has been cast as Pope Pius IX in his
forthcoming The Kidnapping Of Edgardo
Mortara, which is based on the real-life
1858 abduction of an Italian-Jewish boy.
The BFG employs a clever blend of live
action and performance capture technology to breathe life into Dahls fantastical
giants, from the 24 foot tall friendly hero,
to his much larger cannybully brothers,
Fleshlumpeater, Bloodbottler, Manhugger, Meatdripper and Butcher Boy, who
are intent on eating human beans.
Hailing the advancement of digital
effects, Spielberg explained that today
there is no limit to anyones imagination.
He said: You can literally put anything
on the screen. Illusion is gone. We no
longer have to use practical magic to
make you believe something is real,
because digital effects are photo real.

Hopefully the success of The BFG is
measured not just by the amount of heart
expressed by these two characters, but
also by the fact that, 20 minutes into the
movie, you forget there are any effects.
When asked about his own moviewatching habits by other directors,
Spielberg revealed he tries not to dissect how it has been made, but rather I
just let the film, like the rest of the audience, have its way with me.
As for choosing a favourite from his
vast filmography, Spielberg, dressed
casually in a tweed jacket and loose tie,
simply smiled. Thats the toughest question to answer and the answer is clich,
but its the truest answer. Like my children I have seven children and I have
no favourites. They are all my favourites.

Philip Sassoon a picturesque
personality, handsome and exotic looking. Although born within
three months of each other and with
childhood homes less than three miles
apart, the chasm between the privilege
of Sassoons world and the extreme
poverty of Chaplins early life in East
London could not have been greater.
Born into one of the wealthiest Jewish families in late 19th-century Europe,
Sassoon became the greatest host of his
time, mixing with movers and shakers
from arts and politics including Chaplin,
then the worlds most famous film actor.
Although rich, Sassoon was also hardworking and generous to charities but
he was also Jewish, clever and probably
gay. Almost everyone he met thought
him strange, unknowable and oriental.
Damian Collins biography is the first
to focus on Sassoons productive life
and attempt to unravel the enigma of
his complex personality.
Collins, Conservative MP for Folkestone and Hythe, says he was drawn
to writing about Sassoon because of
certain similarities in their lives.
Sassoon and I both read modern history at Oxford and he was MP for Folkestone and Hythe from 1912 until his
death in 1939, the seat I hold 100 years
later. So it is fitting that I have written the
first biography focusing exclusively on his
extraordinary life, Collins tells me.
Born in Kent in 1888, Sassoon was the
only son of Sir Edward Sassoon, the second baronet, and his wife Aline de Rothschild, a marriage that brought together
the wealthy Rothschild
and Sassoon families.
The family fortune
was made originally in
the souks of Baghdad,
where the Sassoons
were Jewish traders specialising in silks, carpets,
cotton, spices, pearls and
opium. They later moved
to Bombay, before settling in England.
As the heir to a fabulously wealthy family,
Sassoon was educated at
Eton and Oxford and
craved acceptance from
the English establishment,
many of whom thought
him both foreign and
exotic, Collins says.
But Sassoon was not just a wealthy
socialite. During the First World War, he
enlisted and was sent to France, where
he worked as private secretary to General Haig, commander-in-chief of the
British forces in France and Flanders.
His fluent French made him invaluable.

with French military command and
dealing with the press.
He did not meet his cousin, the poet
and artist Siegfried Sassoon, until after
the war ended. Although he also lost
a number of his friends in the fighting,
Sassoon seems to have had little sympathy with his cousins decision to protest
publicly against the carnage.
In the 1920s, Sassoon became parliamentary private secretary to Prime Minister David Lloyd George. Although
hardworking, Sassoon loved to party and
bring interesting people
together. The golden
inter-war years were his
heyday and the great
and the good gathered
at his three houses at
25 Park Lane in Mayfair, Trent Park in Enfield and Port Lympne
in Kent, Collins says.
Sassoon was a
lavish and generous
host. At Trent Park,
actors, politicians and
writers would mix
with royalty, aristocrats and sportsmen.
On long weekends
one might see Rex
Whistler or Lawrence
of Arabia painting murals and Chaplin
joking around, while Churchill argued
with George Bernard Shaw about socialism, or discussed art with Kenneth Clark.
Sassoons parties, where flamingos
and peacocks wandered around the gardens mingling with the guests while Noel
Coward played the piano, would inspire
Evelyn Waughs Brideshead Revisited.
In the midst of it all, Sassoon, the cre-
ator of this tableau, obsesses over every

part of his production and is always on
the move, flitting from guest to guest like
a bee in search of honey, Collins writes.
On quieter afternoons, Churchill liked
to sit and paint in Trent Parks tranquil
gardens to take his mind off the need to
confront Nazi Germany.
His peace might be disturbed by
a whirr of engines as Edward, Prince of
Wales, arrived by plane, landing on the
estates airstrip, dressed for golf and
heading to the terrace for a game.
In the evenings, Richard Tauber would
sing by moonlight and there would be a
display of fireworks over the lake.
During the inter-war years, Sassoon
became trustee to the National Gallery
and a major player in the art world. He
bought paintings by Sargent, Whistler,
Bomberg, Gainsborough and Steer and
hung them in his Park Lane home.
Sassoon died in 1939 from complications from flu, just three months before
the Second World War began, and
became part of that lost golden world
familiar to fans of Downton Abbey.
Noel Coward called him a phenomenon that would never recur. Collins
adds: He was determined to make the
most of the life given to him, but denied
to so many of his friends by the war.

Rome with a view!
Sharon Feinstein returns to the Eternal City to

follow in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn and
Gregory Peck and savour new discoveries
he allure of Rome has cast a spell through

the ages for its narrow streets, church
domes, plundered treasures, and golden
light. I was mesmerised, magically restored.
My hotel of choice is the grand neo-Renaissance Regina Baglioni on the tree-lined Via
Veneto, the glorious main drag of Fellinis La
Dolce Vita. It has that special Italian elegance,
marble-floored foyer, cascade of sweeping
stairs, black-and-white film-star photos,
and a charming director, Signor
DEste, who even managed to
please US Secretary of State
John Kerry during his stay.
One of the citys best locations, its a stones throw from
the Spanish Steps, and I
could run through the gardens of the Villa Borghese
every morning, where you
disappear among the frothing white marble fountains
and sprawling pines.
My guide, Alessio from
Imago Artis, was waiting for
me after breakfast, hot on
the heels of previous clients
Kim Kardashian, Kanye West
and Floyd Mayweather, to impart
his knowledge of the Eternal City.
Apparently, I was after a more indepth understanding than they were.
Together we embarked on our own version
of Roman Holiday, where I fancied myself Audrey
Hepburn and he my Gregory Peck.
It was the full gelato on the Spanish Steps, the
full history of Piazza Navona, champagne in the
shadow of the Pantheon, the Arch of Septimius
Severus. In Rome, you spin through so many ages
and eras, its a heady, dizzy experience.
I ate at the Baglionis chic Brunello restaurant,
in its seductive art deco atmosphere. The chef

will prepare whatever you like, with a touch of
spontaneity that smacks of the real Italian
kitchen. He produces dishes that are imaginative
works of art, with a wine list to match. And if you
want cocktails and fun conversation to begin or
end your evening, sit at the bar.
I loved Peppone, a family trattoria that has
been around over four generations.
It is one of the oldest in the city,
with a hard-working chef,
home-style atmosphere,
and fresh, sweet products
that come straight from
the local market.
Pierluigi is more upmarket and an institution in Rome. It is
renowned for its fish,
and it didn't disappoint
with
the
spaghetti all sarde
and puntarelle. It sits
in one of the piazzas
among lots of Renaissance buildings.
Facebook CEO Mark
Zuckerberg chose it
while in Rome for his honeymoon, followed by a visit
to the original Jewish ghetto
on the banks of the Tiber.
He and his bride ate Carciofo alla
giudia, the traditional crispy fried globe artichoke
of Il Ghetto. The area was finally cleared in 1870,
but the dish lives on as a speciality of Roman
Jewish cuisine.
Rome's Great Synagogue is still within the original ghetto, which housed the oldest Jewish community in Europe until October 16, 1943, when
the SS arrived in the early hours.

This was the start of the deportation of 1,000

Jews. Only 16 returned.
If you really want to channel the freewheeling
spirit of Roman Holiday, a Vespa under the stars
is something youll never forget.
My journalist Roman friend, Anna-Maria, took
me on a hair-raising scooter ride round the city,
past the huge, shadowy Colosseum, Theatre of
Marcellus, Victor Emmanuel monument, and
even down quaint Via Margutta, where Pecks
character lived, now lined with small, fascinating
art galleries and workshops.
It sits behind the elegant Via Condotti, where
the wealthy shop.
I prefer to splash out at Empresa on Via dei
Giubbonari, which has cool, trendy, original
pieces you won't find anywhere else. I barely
took off my new, red, hand-made boots.
As this is an historic year in Rome, the Jubilee
of Mercy, I visited all four Papal basilicas. I entered
through the Holy Doors of Mercy, usually sealed
from the inside and opened only for Jubilee
years, supposedly cleansing all your sins.
Mine are mainly an excessive love of food and
wine, which makes Italy such a perfect fit.
The basilicas are extraordinary feats of architecture and beauty honed by Borromini and Bernini.
On my final day, I walked up the Gianicolo Hill

behind buzzy, thriving Trastevere, with views
from the summit of angular roofs, cupolas, and
half-standing ancient ruins.
Romes poetry is in its past, its vestiges of times
gone by from Julius Caesar to the heady, messy
period after the fall of Mussolini and Golden Age
of Italian cinema, with riches plundered from
everywhere from Jerusalem to Britain.
As Tennessee Williams wrote in The Roman
Spring of Mrs Stone, where his title character is
mourning for her husband: You are in the right
city, Mrs Stone. We understand loss here.
For that place of glory, history, sheer delight,
and excitement you must visit before you die,
Rome is the pinnacle.

What does the
Torah say about...

A FEW WEEKS ago we read in
the Torah portion the rules for
choosing a king. We are allowed to choose a monarch,
but the ruler is limited by law.
They are as subject to Torah
law as anyone else is.
In this country the monarch
(government) is the final arbiter of justice hence in the
UK our courts bear the
Queens crown and is not
subject to the normal limitations of law. Hence a monarch
is allowed to execute people
summarily if they are rebellious.
This law is expounded very
clearly in Maimonides Laws of
Kings and Wars:Anyone who
rebels against a king of Israel
may be executed by the
king.Even if the king orders
one of the people to go to a
particular place and the latter
refuses, or he orders him not

to leave his house and he goes
out, the offender is liable to be
put to death. The king may execute him if he desires...
Similarly, anyone who embarrasses or shames the king
may be executed by the
king... (Yad Chapter 2 law 8)
This law is alien to us in our
day. By the same token as a
leader, a monarch is also allowed to wage war under certain circumstances. This is
called a milchemet mitzvah.
This would be a war against
one of the seven nations of
Canaan, or a war against an attacking enemy.
There are, of course, other
wars, which are not included in
this category. They require the
monarch to gain permission
from a sanhedrin of 71 judges.
There is no need to seek the
permission of the court to
wage a milchemet mitzvah.
Rather, he may go out on his
own volition and force the na-
tion to go out with him. In contrast, he may not lead the nation out to wage a milchemat
hareshut unless the court of
seventy one judges approves.
(Ibid, chapter far law 2).
In this context it is interesting to examine recent military
actions here and in Israel.
The Chilcot led to a very
crestfallen Tony Blair, whose
military adventure was approved by the highest court in
the land, Parliament. On another occasion Parliament
blocked a military adventure
under David Cameron in Syria.
Whatever it might have to say
about the veracity of evidence
given, the war would presumably be considered legal from a
halachic perspective. Israel, of
course, needs no justification
for a war of self-defence. The
constant attacks on her innocent citizens are sufficient justification,
and
halachic
justification of the use of extreme violence in self-defence.

BALAK WAS a king of Moab who so feared the

oncoming Israelites that he hired Bilam, a
man with prophetic powers greater in potential even than Moses, to curse the people and
stop them in their tracks.
Thus, a man of God was complicit with the
enemies of Israel.
Eventually, he was killed in battle against Israel, when all his efforts to curse them were
foiled.
Originally, Bilam wanted the fat fee King
Balak was offering and so negotiated with the
Almighty about going with his sponsors on
their mission to seek Israels undoing.
Perhaps the most striking feature of this
story is the talking donkey (Numbers 22:28
31). Why did the Almighty stage such an extraordinary event?
In school, we were taught that this was designed to humiliate Bilam.
The Mishna (Ethics of the Fathers) teaches
that this phenomenon Bilams she-donkey
possessing the power of speech was created
in the twilight period between the six days of
creation and the first Shabbat.
The commentator Seforno has a different
take on the talking donkey.
He explains that the whole purpose of the
donkey using the power of speech normally re-
served only for mankind was to cause Bilam to

repent.
The hope was that if Bilam were to see that
if God wants, even a donkey could speak, he
would think more searchingly about his own
motives before using his power of speech to
harm others.
Thus, even Bilam was given a chance.
We recognise Bilams historic encounter
with our Israelite ancestors in our prayer
books, with the timeless words: How goodly
are your tents O Jacob, your dwellings O Israel.
Bilam compared the Israelite camp to welltended gardens with good irrigation. In rabbinic literature, this is symbolic.
Jacobs dwellings refer to the morality of the
home, in particular, how our ancestors took
care to pitch their tents so that no two entrances would face each other.
This was to avoid immodesty. Here was
Bilam, no great friend of Israel, praising our
ability to avoid knowing each others business.
We would do well to continue to learn from
Bilams social commentary!
Seeing the good in Bilam is a powerful lesson to take away from this weeks story. Before
we commence the Amidah prayer, we remind
ourselves that God alone allows us to articulate our feelings O Lord, open my lips that
I can praise you.
Let all our words be directed to praising Israel and the Jewish people.
Even when criticism is called for, it should
never be transmitted through humiliating another.
If Bilam, an arch-enemy of Israel, did not deserve to be humiliated, then surely no one
does.

FOR MY non-Jewish husband, the main hurdle

to feeling welcome in Reform Judaism was the
community gatekeeper literally.
Although most British Jews are used to security
gates and guards outside our community buildings, it can be a bit intimidating when your first
interaction at a Jewish site is with a man in a
high-vis jacket asking for the secret password (for
the record, its Shabbat shalom).
Many people who participate in Jewish life
were not necessarily raised Jewish. There are
all kinds of reasons someone might not know
Kiddush from Kaddish they might be rediscovering their heritage, exploring family history,
or just curious.
Being welcoming means creating a space in
which everyone feels comfortable asking questions, no matter how basic.
When I got engaged to a non-Jewish man,
my rabbi invited him to our synagogue's weekly
Gateway to Judaism classes, to get a sense of
the religion.
The first two holidays on the syllabus were
Purim and Pesach, which I had sold as the fun
ones religiously mandated drinking!
But my fianc had other ideas: I couldnt
help but notice that both of these holidays
ended with a massacre of non-Jews and everybody celebrating that.
Our rabbi talked about the Midrash that, as

the angels sang praise, God turned on them

and said: My children are drowning and you
sing? This led to a long conversation about
pikuach nefesh (saving a life) and the halachic
status of gerim, or converts, in early Israelite society. It was completely unintentionally the
perfect introduction to Jewish life.
Today, my non-Jewish husband is active in our
community. He comes to the monthly intergenerational music service where I play, and enjoys
our synagogues food and history sessions one
of our rabbis joked that he turns up to shul more
often than many halachically Jewish members.
He even comes with me to our synagogues
weekend away. One of my favourite memories
is coming back from a study session to find him
propping up the hotel bar with the guys, talking big about that night's dinner quiz.
The only time we have felt excluded from
Reform Jewish life was around our wedding.
When we got engaged, I was looking forward
to sharing that joyful process with our community. Our rabbis helped as much as they felt
able to, but it felt like a slap in the face to hear
that our relationship wasnt good enough for a
proper chuppah.
Six years on, the sting has faded, but I think
the hurt will always be there. The Reform
movement has rightly revisited the halacha
around other kinds of weddings to allow Jewish people in love to marry Jewishly: I would
love if we could open the security gate around
synagogues for mixed-faith weddings.
Those who are different

are in fear of their lives
AS MOVEMENTS, LJY-Netzer and Liberal
Judaism have done much to advance
LGBTQI+ rights.
We were at the forefront of the battle for
same-gender marriage, our camps and synagogues are fully inclusive and our Rainbow
Jews and Twilight People projects have won
acclaim and even a spot on the front page
of The Guardian.
So as I write this piece, preparing to go
on a European tour with my fellow LJYNetzer members, hoping this will be one of
the best times of my life, why do I feel so
sad?
Im sad because when I look outside of
our liberal bubble, there is still so much
work to do to support LGBTQI+ rights.
Specifically I cry every time I think about
the people, some barely older than me,
whose lives were ended so brutally last

month in Orlando.
The Holocaust should have taught my
grandparents generation that murdering
anyone for their identity is beyond disgusting, yet 49 people died owing to their
sexuality.
I cry because, in a different situation, it
could have been my close friends who were
shot and because, in a better world, this
wouldnt have happened.
Its not just the massacre in Orlando. One
look on social media shows the daily abuse
dished out to LGBTQI+ people. Not to mention the many countries in which being gay
is still considered a crime, sometimes one
that is punishable by death.
These horrors should shock any Jew,
but for LGBTQI+ Jewish teens it is
maybe hardest, providing confirmation that
people are still willing to hurt those who are
different.
This is why we must continue to actively
educate about respect and equality within
our youth movements to ensure that every
Jewish child grows up willing to stand up for
what is right.
We must never be complacent and we
must never forget.

us as her full-time carers?

The answer to your question is: as soon as possible! When
a child turns 18 they are entitled to an assessment under
the Care Act 2014. This will identify any of your childs
needs that the local authority has a duty to meet.
When your child becomes an adult at 18, you are not legally
obliged to act as a primary care giver and the legal responsibility falls to the local authority.
It may be that you wish to continue to care for your child
into their adulthood, in which case you, too, are eligible for
an assessment of your needs as a carer under the Care Act
2014.
Unfortunately, all too often, parents pass away without having planned for their adult childs future. This means that
local authorities and support providers then have to rush to
find a suitable home for the person, reducing their options.
It also means the person has to cope with an overwhelming
amount of change in a short space of time, as well as a
bereavement.
It is important that your daughters case is effectively
transitioned from childrens services into adult services.
Requesting that your local authoritys adult or transitions
services complete your daughters Care Act assessment is
one way of doing this.

Korean street food venture On the Bab opened in April in
Covent Garden. I popped along last week to try it out.
With branches in Shoreditch and
Marylebone, and another due to open
near St Pauls, this concept looks
set to stake a firm claim on the
growing small plates dining
trend. Bab is the Korean word for
rice, and there are lots of dishes
served with it. We enjoyed Korean
fried chicken with chopped peanuts,
marinated Korean beef on rice, broccoli with Korean
spicy mayo and deep fried arancini rice balls with cheese
and tomato. Dishes are keenly priced, service is fast and
the food is seriously tasty -- perfect for a quick pitstop.

lots of glowing reviews. I started with a lychee
and pomegranate bellini, which went down
a little too quickly. I munched hopefully

My main dish was hot tomatoes,
manouri cheese (lovely), lots of
garlic, potato bread and mint. My
friend had the minced lamb with
pine nuts and a baked yogurt
topping (pictured, left) stunning.
To conduct a fair test, we tried
all the desserts. The famous
cheesecake with its unusual kadaif
pastry bottom (above, right) was
divine and there was a darling white
chocolate concoction, too.
Go if youre looking for a casual,
unpretentious and very nice night
out. Dont go if you want to lose
weight as there is just too much not
to be missed cheesy, creamy
gorgeousness.

Midweek lunch with the girls normally means

a salad somewhere local, and there is an
increasingly good choice of places to go
for that, but when my foodie friend Kate
suggested we try a new place just off
Marylebone High Street (after all, its only
just past St Johns Wood, she reasoned),
I was easily persuaded.
Picture Marylebone is the second outpost
of young, charming Tom Sleggs wellestablished Fitzrovia restaurant of the same
name. Having garnered a reputation for
adventurous menus and sublime flavours and
presentation, Tom has a lot to live up to
with his new venture. I love new
restaurants the shiny cutlery, the
sparkling glassware, the smell of freshly
honed wood and newly painted walls.
And I love them even more when they
have got it absolutely right, even at the
beginning, which Picture has. Warm
greeting as we entered, shown to a
lovely table by the window (a bright spot
even on a dull day), offered drinks and
menus swiftly but not hurriedly. And oh,
what a menu. There is a set lunch at 22
for three courses, a six-course tasting menu
at 40 and an la carte with dishes hovering
around the 10 mark (smallish plates its
advisable to have around three each). We

ordered 10 dishes between four of us the
entire menu, in fact, plus all three sides!
A ravioli of caramelised onion with peas,
a charred spiced cauliflower and a kind of
deconstructed bruschetta with shaved feta
paved the way for cod with tenderstem
broccoli and white beans, hake brandade
(mashed potato mixed with flaked fish an
outstanding dish) with smoked haddock and
red onion, stonebass with aubergine and orzo
pasta. Then a meat course 28-day aged beef
with marrow crumb, melt-in-the-mouth lamb
neck in a rich gravy, tender roast chicken with
Portobello mushrooms and cavolo nero.
For dessert, theres warm almond cake with
frozen lemon thyme yoghurt, iced mascarpone
parfait with strawberries and granola and
dark chocolate mousse with salted caramel
crumble. And it has to be said, every single
dish is as pretty as a picture.

There was much discussion on The Restaurant

Club on Facebook this week regarding
tipping in restaurants.
One member was incensed to discover that the
tips never reach the staff.
This makes me mad,said Hiba. I worked as a
waitress straight after university and I usually

found that those who had more to spend were less
generous, while a couple who came in to have their
first night out after having a baby and just shared
a starter and a main still left me a tip. Since then
I have never walked out without leaving a tip, no
matter how bad the service. I had to share my tips
with the chefs and bar staff, so even if my waitress is
terrible, I cant hold it against everyone in the team.

Part two of our preview of next months Olympic Games looks
at Israels gymnasts, badminton star and first female wrestler
ISRAELS RHYTHMIC gymnastics team is considered to be one of Israels

main hopes for a medal in Rio, but the squad goes into the Games on
the back of controversy surrounding their coach.
Ira Vigdorchik will continue to lead the team, but wont personally
guide the squad, an Israel Gymnastics Association committee ruled
earlier this week. The committee looked into Vigdorchiks conduct and
allegations that she kicked one of the squads gymnasts, Ekaterina Levina, during training. While she denied the accusations, the IGA also received a letter by the gymnasts parents, claiming the incident was only
the tip of the iceberg. According to the letter, Vigdorchik repeatedly abused the gymnasts, both verbally and physically, and
drinks alcohol during training and competitions. However,
the IGAs committee decided Vigdorchik will continue to
be in charge of the teams preparations for the Games.
Hopefully not causing too much disruption, the five
girls Yuval Filo, Alona Koshevatskiy, Levina, Karina
Lykhvar and Ida Mayrin, who won three medals at last
years European Championships, have warmed up for Rio
by winning gold, silver and bronze medals at last months
European Championships in Holon. Captain Koshevatskiy
said: Its a realistic target to win a medal in Rio.
Neta Rivkin will be taking part in the individual competition,
in what will be the 25-year-olds third Games. Israels most successful rhythmic gymnast, the two-time Olympian won silver at the 2011
European Championships and bronze at that years World Championships. She was a silver medallist at the 2014 Grand Prix Final and
bronze winner at last years European Games in Baku.
Also being selected to be the flag bearer at the opening ceremony,
she said: When I was told I would be holding the flag, I felt I was fulfilling another personal dream. I along, with all the other athletes
promise that we will all do our very best. We all want to bring moments
of joy to the Israeli people.
Alex Shatilov will also be competing in his third Games. Claiming
the best ever achievement in artistic gymnastics for an Israeli gymnast
in the floor final in Beijing in 2008, he become the first Israeli to win a
medal at both the European Artistic

Championships and World Artistic
Championships, and rounded off his
preparations for next month by winning
gold in the floor final at the World Challenge Cup competition in Anadia, Portugal. The 29-year-old said: Winning a
gold medal is always pleasing. This is
my final competition before Rio so this
gives me confidence.
Israels first woman to qualify
for the wrestling event is Ilana
Kratysh, who will be competing in the 69kg event. Born
one hour after her parents arrived in Israel from Russia,
she suffered a minor injury
when serving in the IDF, so
turned her attention from
judo to wrestling. Claiming
three silver medals at three European Championships and at last
years European Games. She said:
Ive been waiting all my life for this [appearing at an Olympic Games].
Its exciting to be the first female in wrestling, I want people to know the
sport more in Israel and give hope to the next generation.
Misha Zilberman became Israels first badminton player at an Olympic
Games in 2012 and began playing the sport when he was 12. A winner
of four gold Maccabiah medals and a 22-times national champion, hes
also won gold, silver and bronze medals at international tournaments
and will be looking to better his 33rd place finish at London. When
asked what spurred him on and how hed encourage youngsters to get
involved in sport, he said: Success is driven not only by the wins, but
often through failures and that is what should keep you going, getting
better, trying harder and most of all enjoying your game.

draw against Kairat Almaty in
the first leg of their Europa
League second round qualifying round tie.

Greek side Olympiakos over two legs if
they are to keep alive their hopes of
reaching the coming seasons Champions League.
The Israeli champions drew 0-0 in
Moldova on Tuesday night, as they overcame Sherriff Tiraspol 3-2 on aggregate
in their second round qualifying tie.
Restricting the home side to just four
shots on target, goalkeeper David Goresh
thwarted Josip Brezovec, Zoran Kvri,
Vujadin Savi and Mateo Sui, while the
Israelis saw Ovidiu Hoban sent-off in the
final minutes of the match.
Coach Barak Bachar said: It was a very
hard game as predicted, they were very
tough, but I'm really happy with the way
we played. All our players showed great
character, and this result showed the importance of the victory we got last week.
I'm glad we managed to win the tie and
we will start preparing for the next game
very shortly.
Saying how delighted he is for the fans,
and looking ahead to the next round
against Olympiakos, the most successful
team in Greek history, he said: The
biggest thing I take from this game is that
we promised our supporters at least another two games at this level of European
football. We won a very tough fixture and
I know with these players, everything is
possible against Olympiakos.
Four games away from securing a

League, they will first need to beat

A JEWISH NFL player has become
the first to qualify for a United
States Olympic team after he was
named in the squad for their rugby
sevens team at next months Olympic
Games.
New England Patriots Nate Ebner,
who won the Superbowl in 2014,
was earlier this week included in the
12-man squad where he will be
joined by another Jewish player,
Zack Test.
The youngest ever to have played
for the US mens seven team at the
age of 17, he then switched sports,
becoming an All-America rugby
player at Ohio State University.
He then joined the schools football team, before being drafted by
the Patriots in the sixth round of the
2012 NFL draft.
Speaking of his Jewish roots, he

said: My dad [a Sunday school principal at Temple Sholom in Ohio, who
was killed in an attempted robbery]
taught me the importance of being
Jewish, he stressed finishing strong
in every task I did and conduct myself always in a proper manner.
Talking of his grandparents and
the part they played in helping him
keep in touch with his Jewish heritage, he added: They make sure I
keep up with Jewish events and that
I remember my origins.
Rugby sevens will be making its
debut at the Olympics. Rugby has
not been played at the Games since
1924, when the US squad, which won
gold, included Samuel Goodman, a
Jewish player who also managed the
US team four years earlier.
