Number of points

Each FSB-PC2 can support up to 3,600 programmed point events that

are a combination of point events coming into the FSB-PC2 and point
events going out to the BMS. Each FSB-PCLW can support up to
1,800 programmed point events. For example:

FSB-PC2 and FSB-PCLW

Communication Bridge
Installation Sheet

For an FSB-PC2, you could program 1,800 point events to come

into the FSB-PC2 and up to 1,800 point events to go out to your
BMS.

For an FSB-PCLW, you could program 900 point events to come

into the FSB-PCLW and up to 900 point events to go out to your
BMS.

When calculating the number of points in your application, consider

that the total supported programmed point events are made up of
panel devices (smoke detector, module, etc.) and event types (alarm,
trouble, supervisory, time stamp, etc.), and that one device point
reporting into the FSB from a panel may have many event type points
going out to the BMS.

Required tasks
The following tasks are required to prepare the FSB for communication
between your control panel and a BMS.
1.
2.
3.
4.

Program the FSB (see Programming on page 2).

Install the FSB (see Installation on page 3).
Connect the field wiring (see Wiring on page 4).
Test the system (see Testing on page 5).

Getting started
Before getting started, make sure the following tools are available:

Description
The FSB-PC2 and FSB-PCLW field server bridges (FSB) are ancillary
devices that provide a communication bridge between EST3 and
EST3X life safety systems and a building management system (BMS)
by converting the EST control panel External Communications
Protocol into supported serial and Ethernet protocols. A list of the
supported protocols can be found in Specifications on page 5.
Notes

The FSB is intended for ancillary use only. Use in non-ancillary

applications is not permitted unless approved by the local authority
having jurisdiction.

The FSB cannot be used for smoke control applications.

A Windows PC with a network interface card.

An Ethernet network cable.

A list of the life safety systems device addresses and possible

device states. Refer to the Exporting the device address list from
the 3-SDU below.

A connection to the BMS.

The FSB configuration file (config.csv) for the protocol being used
by your BMS. The default configuration file, BACnet IP, is stored in
the FSB. Other protocol configuration files can be downloaded
from my-eddie.com, as described in Programming on page 2.

You will also need the following manuals, which can be downloaded
from www.protocessor.com/tech-support/data-sheets-andinstruction-manuals.php:

Application
This section describes possible FSB communication applications
between a control panel and a BMS. FSB programming, installation,
and wiring is the same for each application.
The applications are:

FieldServer Driver Manual (FS9700-39 EST3-ECP Rev 1.13AA)

The FieldServer driver manual for the protocol being used by the
BMS

EST3X control panels support one FSB per control panel.

Programmed point events are sent via the FSB to the BMS.

EST3 control panels can support one or two FSBs per control
panel. Each FSB is programmed with the point events it is
responsible for sending to the BMS.

Exporting the device address list from the 3-SDU

EST3 and EST3X control panel networks can support multiple

FSBs connected to the same BMS on a control panel network. The
number of FSBs is limited by the number of ports available on the
control panel network. Programmed point events are split between
the FSBs in the network to one BMS. Each FSB is programmed
with the point events it is responsible for sending to the BMS.

2015 UTC Fire & Security Americas Corporation, Inc.

To program device addresses in the FSB configuration file, you need a

list of the life safety systems device addresses and possible device
states (e.g., alarm, trouble, etc.). If you do not have the list, you can
export it from the System Definition Utility (3-SDU).
Note: To enable the Export button in the Export dialog box, the 3-SDU
Cabinet Configuration must have at least one port set to Gateway
Type III.

Programming
Individual system point events can be relayed to the BMS by
programming device addresses in the FSB configuration file. You can
program the FSB by using an external remote user interface program,
or by using the built-in graphical user interface (GUI). The steps in this
section describe how to use the GUI method.
Note: The DIP switches on the FSB are disabled. The field baud rate,
node ID, and protocol selection are set in the configuration file.
Step 1: Download and install the Utilities Software
1. Download the Install.zip file from www.protocessor.com/techsupport/utilities-and-design-documents.php to the PC.
2. Unzip the file, and then double-click the Install.msi file to install the
utilities. The utilities will be used to create a diagnostic log to help
debug programming.

Step 6: Download protocol configuration files other than

BACNET/IP
If your BMS uses a protocol other than BACNET/IP, download the
required protocol from the my-eddie.com website.
1. Open your Internet browser, go to my-eddie.com, and log on.
2. In the Media section, select Software from the Media Type list.
3. In the Media Results section, locate FSB-PC - FieldServer
Template Config files, and then click Download.
4. Click Open, expand the EST3 sample Config files folder in the
WinZip directory tree, and then select the configuration file you
want to download.
5. Click Extract, and then save the configuration file to a location on
your PC.
Step 7: Modify the configuration file
For this step, you need the device address list for the devices you want
to program in the configuration file and the protocol manual for the
protocol being used by the BMS. You should have knowledge of the
protocol or access to someone who does. You may also find the
ProtoCessor Configuration Manual useful during this step.
To modify the configuration file:
1. Open the configuration file you saved in Step 5 and program the
EST portion of the file as instructed in the FieldServer Driver
Manual (FS9700-39 EST3-ECP Rev 1.13AA).

1. Ensure that the Frame GND (FG) terminal is used to ground the
power connection.

2. For UL/ULC Listed EST3 and EST3X systems, remove the

common control sections of the configuration file. These are not
needed because you cannot control the life safety system through
the BMS.

2. Connect power wiring from the FSB power terminals on the HOST
connector to a control panel power supply or other 24 VDC power
source. See Figure 5.

3. Program the BMS protocol portion of the configuration file as

instructed in the FieldServer driver manual for the protocol being
used.

Step 3: Confirm FSB connectivity and connect to the ProtoNode

GUI

Wiring

To wire the FSB:

The FSB is powered by the control panel power supply. It

communicates with the panel through an RS-232 connection to the
panels CPU, and with the BMS through an RS-485, LonWorks, or
Ethernet connection.

1. Connect power wiring to the FSB power terminals on the HOST

connector and the AUX power terminals on the panel. See
Figure 5.

Notes

The control panel Ports setting must be configured in the 3-SDU

as Gateway Type III and the baud rate as 19200 baud.

For the power terminals, ensure that the Frame GND (FG) terminal
is used to ground the power connection.

For FSB-PCLW LonWorks terminal wiring, follow the industry

standard for bus topology wiring.

For RS-232 wiring, the maximum circuit length is 50 ft. (15.2 m).

For RS-232 wiring in a single EST3 control panel, if you are

connecting two FSBs, both COM ports on the 3-CPU must be
available.

2. Connect RS-485 or LonWorks wiring to the FSB FIELD or

LonWorks connector and the BMS RS-485 or LonWorks
connection, as shown in Figure 4.
or
Connect the Ethernet cable to the FSB ETHERNET jack and the
BMS network connection, as shown in Figure 5.

Testing
Test communication between the control panel and the BMS to make
sure the desired event points are being transmitted.
Notes

For an FSB-PCLW, when commissioning the device you will be

prompted by the LonWorks Network Management tool to toggle
the Service Pin on the device. To do so, insert a small diameter
screwdriver into the Service Pin hole (see Figure 6), make contact
with the pin on the main board, and then tilt the screw driver
toward the LonWorks connector to toggle the pin.

For an FSB-PC2, you can find LED descriptions in the FieldServer

ProtoNode-RER and ProtoNode-LER Startup Guide.

For an FSB-PC2, a quick way to test BACnet/IP or BACnet MS/TP

is to download a complimentary 30-day evaluation copy of Chipkin
Automation's CAS BACnet Explorer at
http://app.chipkin.com/activation/UTC30days/.

To test control panel and BMS communication:

1. From the control panel, initiate a point event that you programmed
to be sent from the FSB to the BMS.
2. From the ProtoNode GUI, enter O and verify that the event
message was transmitted to the BMS correctly. (Refer to the
FieldServer Utilities Manual for details on using the GUI.)
3. Restore the point event.
4. Test other points as required.
