A Grateful Heart
George Herbert was an Anglican priest back in the 1600s. He was also a
Welsh poet, who wrote rich and radiant verse. He wrote one prayer that has
always stuck with me:
Thou that hast given so much to me,
Give one thing more, a grateful heart.
Not thankful when it pleaseth me,
As if Thy blessings had spare days;
But such a heart, whose pulse may be Thy praise.
If we stop and really think about it, the greatest gift God could give us is
grateful hearts: a living consciousness of all the blessings which every day,
every moment fill our lives. If we have everything we could ever ask for, but
dont recognize it, dont appreciate it, its like we have nothing at all. Even in
the midst of plenty, we will be discontented if we dont have the realization
that it is all a blessing.
The summer is upon us- ripe corn, watermelon off the vine, luxuriant long days
and pleasant evenings. And if we will notice them, they will become real for
us. With a grateful heart, the summer becomes magical! Jeanne Phelans
favorite prayer is, Open my eyes that I may see. Open eyes, a grateful heart:
thats life at its fullest.
May our eyes be open and our hearts grateful in these wonderful days of
summer!
In Christs love,
Pastor Hawkins

Singing Bowl FOR AUGUST

The August Singing Bowl donations will
continue to go to our summer project,
Blessings in a Backpack.
Right now, 4,600 Waukesha County kids go hungry every
weekend because their families are struggling. In one
sense, it doesnt matter what the reason is: parents who
are unemployed, on drugs, have an illness: the bottom
line is that these kids go hungry. I was listening to one
teacher who was recounting how she was having lunch
with some students last year. What was being served was
a pork sandwich that resembled a hockey puck. None of
the kids would touch it- except for one little girl who was
gobbling it down. This is delicious! she said. Its the first
thing Ive eaten since Friday!
Blessings in a Backpack is part of a national organization
whose mission is to provide food on the weekends for
elementary school children who might otherwise go
hungry. The Waukesha County chapter started in 2012,
serving 25 students at Hadfield Elementary School. Last
year, they served over 900 children at four Waukesha
elementary schools. Every Friday, volunteers fill
backpacks (so the kids look like theyre just bringing
homework home) with basic food that the child would be
able to fix for themselves in case their parents arent
functioning. Mac and cheese, raisins, protein bars: just
basic nutrition to keep them from going hungry.
It takes $100 to feed a child for a school year. Our Singing
Bowl loose change offering will continue to go to help
buy food in bulk for the program. The Oconomowoc
ministerium is looking into perhaps starting a program like
this in our area and maybe exploring how we can help
school-lunch-dependent kids during the summer. Maybe
we can help make the weekends something a kid can
look forward to.

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
Family Promise
Thank you to everyone who helped with Family Promise.
You are a WONDERFUL group of volunteers. The meals as
usual were excellent and the families enjoyed all your
hospitality. "It takes a village to raise a child", but our
church has raised the hopes of many families.
Tonya and her two girls were able to leave for Las Vegas
where she was joining her mother.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
RALLY DAY is September 11. We will have a bouncy house
and treats to kick off this coming year! We are dividing
the kids into 2 groups, the younger "Single Digits" class (4
years old through 4th grade) and the older "Double
Digits" class (5th grade and up). We will still have our
"service" just like in the big church and then we will break
off into our groups for our lessons. We are looking forward
to a great year!
See you on September 11!

Do you have summertime-trip-itis

(love taking trips). It doesnt take
a church consultant to tell you
that most churches experience a
decrease in regular giving during
the summer months. It is not that
people do not care about their church; people simply
choose not to attend church as often for various reasons.
Well-meaning church members turn their attention
toward beaches, mountaintop cabins, trips to the lake,
and anything else that might pop up during the summer
months. That does not mean they are not a faithful
church member for taking a vacation. However, an
inconsistent attendance pattern can create a cash flow
crisis. Simply put: Ministry happens whether every member
is present or not. That means the church is still spending
money to do ministry, even if people arent attending as
they normally do. If you have you ever considered
automatic giving now is the time to do it. Talk to our
Financial Secretary, Laurie Buckett, about how to get set
up on automatic withdrawal of your monthly or yearly
pledge. Even if you are not at Church each Sunday,
staying connected is the key to building a community of
faith. Stay connected and give all year round.

Annual Meeting (6-11-2016)
(notes provided by attendees Pastor Nansi, Sue & Gary
Phelps and Kristen Voskuil)

Thursday Pastors workshop: Leading Adaptive Change

in the Congregation

The most life-giving attitude for todays churches is

Holy Curiosity- open, inquisitive, engaged, agile.
Why? Because our society is changing so quickly
that we cant make 5-Year Plans anymore.
Our job is to keep our eyes open for the next good
step. The organizations that thrive will be those who
learn to adapt quickly to changing circumstances
and opportunities.

People dont resist change, per se, but loss. We

grieve what we have lost, not just what has
changed.
We need to be drawn into a
compelling vision to overcome our sense of loss:
that what is before us is better than what is behind
us. If you want to build a ship, dont summon
people to buy wood, prepare tools, distribute jobs
and organize the work; rather, teach people the
yearning for the wide, boundless ocean. Antoine
de Saint Exupery

Churches who thrive change from being

Consumer Churches (I go to church) into being
Missional Churches (I AM the church.)

Review evaluation criteria: Not did we succeed,

but how often did we risk, experiment, step outside
the box?

Keep experimenting. Formula 409 is named

Formula 409 because it took 409 tries to get the
recipe right.

What gets air time in Council and the

Congregation? What we reflect on is what we
think is important. Reporting on God-sightingssigns of Gods presence- is a good place to start.
Where do we see signs of Gods presence in our
daily lives around us?

Every 500 years, its like God holds a rummage sale

in the church, getting rid of the old stuff, holding on
to some of the treasures, but basically cleaning
house. Our last major church cleaning was the
Protestant Reformation 499 years ago. And were
due for another
Friday Keynote Speaker: Cameron Trimble #1

The UCC is a denominations of firsts: first church

to ordain women, first church to ordain gays.
What is our next first? To bear light in the
community, we must be the relentless advocate
of those in our community who are suffering.
Immigrants? Environment? Why does Emmanuel
exist?

Societal trends- how can we reflect them in our

churches?
o Crowd-sourcing (getting the buy-in of lots of
small sources for doing good on large
scale)
o Going local (buying local, sourcing local,
eating local)
o Do it yourself (inventors, entrepreneurs)
o Sharing Economy (borrowing, not owning)

Start Up Nation (trying a lot with the

expectation of failure before success)

Saturday Keynote Speaker: Cameron Trimble #2

The UCC (all US churches except Pentecostals,

actually) face steep challenges, but we dont have
to be intimidated. We need to start again from the
bottom up to recreate ourselves for todays
community.

The only deadly sin in worship is being boring! How

can we add life/ enthusiasm to our time together?
o Address different kinds of learning styles: visual
audio, kinesthetic. How do people grab onto the
ideas and images that are there on a Sunday
morning? How do are they transformed?
Worship cant be crafted for just one kind of
person.
o Craft worship like we have Attention Deficit
Disorder. Millenials are used to multiple images,
where the screen changes every second.
Adapting worship to reach out to those who
arent (yet) in the building.
o Worship in growing churches is designed for
people who are not there. Sunday morning
worship is not about us!
o We can have any style of worship, but it has to
be authentic and energetic, touching both mind
and heart. It cant just be copying other people.
If we dont do it well, dont do it.
God
deserves our best, and so do our guests.
o Is the bulletin a checklist of things to do next, or
does the worship have a sense of energy and
purpose?

89% of visitors come to church by personal invitation.

How are we making them comfortable when they
first walk in?
o Foyer: This is our first impression. Is it alive?
Welcoming? Do they experience it as a mud
room?
o Gathering Area: When they first walk in, people
need orientation. Where are the bathrooms?
Church school? Sanctuary? When they first walk
in, can they see where to go for these? What
kind of papers are laying around? Are the
bulletin boards current, attractive and interesting
for a visitor?
o Church School: Is it tidy, or does it have stacks of
old lessons and crafts hanging around?
Are the students current projects on display?
Does it seem like a colorful and alive space?
Is it a space that curious children get excited
about?
o Sanctuary: Its the heart of the church. Does it
feel alive and well-loved?
If you werent at Emmanuel this week, what would
you miss?
***Idea: put a 30 second video of the best part of last
Sundays worship on our Facebook/ Youtube every
Monday, so people can see what they missed!
Suggested books: Five Practices of Fruitful
Congregations, Robert Schnase Leadership and the
New Science, Margaret Wheatley

Saturday Workshops:

Adult Education (Nansi). Sunday worship is where

most people learn their Bible: do more storytelling;
give context of reading before the scripture
reading; tell the larger story.
Try Adult Retreats: Sat 8:30am-3:30pm at another
UCC church Fri pm-Sun noon at Pilgrim Center
Guest speakers
Christian Ed resources for adults & kids: wcucc.org &
ucc.org for StillSpeaking resources.

Childrens Church School (Sue Phelps). The main

idea for changing Sunday School was to make it
more about "experiences" and less Bible lessons.
Still use the lessons, but have kids do more of the
telling of their experiences or what to do if...
Have the kids go out into the community to do
things such as make a snowman in front of a
nursing home, take cookies to a community
service place, sing carols at a nursing home.
Use more technology (Youtube, music,
smartboard) during SS, use rooms that are fun to
be in for SS (decorated walls for SS), think "global".
5th Sunday -- go out and do community stuff
instead of being in church/Sunday school
Have Sunday School be on a different night of
the week
Do several stations during Sunday school -- kind
of like the Messy Church model
Attend Community events to advertise self
Curriculum ideas and books (specifically about
getting and keeping volunteers)
Mentoring/partnering youths to keep them
engaged after confirmation.
They have to know that there are needed and
that their opinions matter.

Organization. (Kristin Voskuil). I learned about

McFarland UCCs organizational model, which is
profoundly decentralized and team-centered. It
seems to work really well for them; Ill get a copy of
their constitution and bylaws for Council to review.

Governance (Gary Phelps). Most churches

have the same problem: too many
board/committees for too few volunteers.
McFarland UCC is governed by a 6-person council;
everything else is run ad hoc by volunteers. All
elected positions have term limits to keep people
and ideas fresh.
How is it leadership if it takes dozens of people?
Are monthly meetings necessary, or only when
there is something to discuss?
Try living out different governing options before
we rewrite the Constitution to make sure it works.
Churches have set aside constitutions while
trying new things. It is important to note that if we
vote to suspend the constitution, this leads to
other legal considerations. We no longer belong to
the UCC association if we set aside our
constitution.
Books: Governance and Ministry: Rethinking Board
Leadership, Dan Hotchkiss

Stewardship (Gary Phelps).

Never let our church hit a financial crisis: we can
plan out cash flow.
ASK people to give, and keep asking. People are
increasingly Spenders, not Givers.
Electronic giving (Tithe.ly is one app to use for
automatic electronic giving): direct deduction;
one church had an ipad with a card reader for those
who live to use credit or debit cards.
A website link is for people that cant make it to
church, or just want to give outside of Sundays. QR
codes in the bulletins, so people can just scan with
their phones to give.
Keep it personal, stay on top of birthdays,
anniversaries, life events, so people will feel this is their
community.
Collective impact: partnering with other non-profits
to network and play to each others strengths.
Havey & Associates: Church fund raising
consultants. havey.com

Immigration (Nansi). Immigration aid can take

different forms, all of which need
1) an Interpreter who speaks the language
2) Volunteer Organizer with the patience to work with
different cultures and the difficult and complex lives
of immigrants.
Teaching ESL to undocumented workers & their
families, (Shirley Barnes grassroots@merr.com 608623-2109)
helping them get connected with basic social
services like the free clinic, schools.
To find them, go to the schools, Mexican grocer,
RC church, dairy farmers. Literacy Council can help
train ESL tutors.
Resettling Refugees from a refugee camp (Lys Buck
lys.buck@earthlink.net 414-362-0538). Includes
mentoring them for a minimum of 6 months (can be
longer, according to the needs of the family). Initially
help them with food, clothing; finding an apartment
& job. Taking them to the doctor & dentist.
Registering for school. Teach them what a refrigerator
is and how to flush the toilet. How to ride a bus;
finding foods they will like and will be able to cook
here. Basic orientation to our culture and helping
them succeed. Found through Lutheran Social
Services or Catholic Charities.
Sponsoring Asylum Seekers. (Barb de Souza
barbgus@hotmail.com 336-880-3196; David
Ostendorf dave@firstchurchrf.org 714-4416559).Typically from Latin America, those showing
up at our borders and legally asking for asylum
because of fear for their lives. River Falls UCC
couldnt do it alone, so they formed a consortium
of 8 churches and divvied out responsibilities to
help with: driving, doctors, school, jobs, furniture,
legal aid, housing, babysitting, fundraising, learning
English, social worker. Can last a year; can last 5
years, depending on the needs of the family and
how quickly they adapt.
Find them through an immigration lawyer like Ben
Shryock, not Lutheran Social Services or Catholic
Charities.
