CHILEAN

VISION

Santiago

The Porters

Judy

Dale

The Apostle Paul asks these startling questions:*

How are they to believe in Him whom they have never
heard?

Among the nations in the world who are ignorant of

the Gospel of Christ, high on the list is the country of
Chile, The views that many Chilean people have of
Jesus are mainly perverted ones; promoted by Marx
ism, Catholicism, and even Protestantism.

Chile is

a land of unbelief; 10% of the country is called Pro

testant and 10% is called Catholic. But 80% of the
country embrace futility, with little hope and little
future.

How are they to hear without a preacher?

All does not have to be so dismal! The fact is, the

Gospel of Christ has begun to progress in Chile,
Workers now on the field have reported remarkable
results by using Bible Correspondence courses con
cerning the Bible and Salvation. Presently (Dec, 73)
14, 000 students have enrolled with new ones being add
ed by the rate of 1200 per month. About 55% of those
graduating accept Christ and are baptized. Hundreds
have graduated and soon thousands will! The mission
aries have stated that if there were more workers, en
rollments could top 48, 000 students per year!
How can men preach unless they are sent?
Dale and Judy Porter have recognized the "white
fields of harvest" in Chile.

The social conditions are

right, and only Jesus can fill the emptiness in their

lives. It is our duty to respond to this need "At such
a time as this."

*Romans 10:14, 15

Please send along with this form copies of recommendations from churches which will encourage
other churches to support your missionary work. There are churches which will not allow a
visiting missionary to speak unless a church recommendation can be shown. Since it is impos
sible for any one person to know all Christians in the world, this recommendation by a respon
sible New Testament church is a vital help in persuading others of your worthiness and the value
of your mission. Mission Services stands ready to help you inform HORIZONS readers about
your church recommendations. Since the church is sending you to the mission field (Acts 13:1-3)
and will help provide the necessary needs on the field, naturally the church should share the

credit in your missionary ministry. One of the ways that the church can do this is to share their
conviction regarding your missionary ministry with others. Certainly, their words will help
convince others regarding the worthiness of your work. Please help MISSION SERVICES to

spread your news through HORIZONS, Packets and Slide library by sending your church recom
mendations as soon as possible. Thanks. Send what you have now, and the others later.

Santiago

"THAT THE WORD MIGHT REACH THE MASSES"

To our Friends in Christ,

October 1974
-Greeti-ngs from Chile! A person -only needs to feel the-breezes
in Santiago to know that spring is here. Also, the budding trees,
the rose bushes, and the flowers give further evidence that things
are coming back to life. Just as God's mighty hand is in His crea

tion, so we are seeing His power displayed in the hearts of people

who are searching for His Way. I believe that this spring in Chile
we will not only see the rebirth of nature, but many people who will
be "born .again".

These are two tremendous reasons to Praise the Lord!

El Encuentro Bible courses now have 21,000 students enrolled

in at least the first lesson. Most Bible courses in the past, and
many currently being used in South America are doctrinely biased,
and people often miss what the Word of God is trying to say. Through
El Encuentro, the Bible has challenged people in every prominent
denomination in the city. The course is even being used by profess
ors, teachers, and teaching nunswho want a non-sectarian course of
the Bible, We rejoice that God's Word, unaltered is sufficient on
it's own to chanqe lives! (Hebrews 4;12)

Not only has the Word been powerful, but we continually see the
Lord's hand in answered prayer. I personally wrote many of the bro
thers in the States, informing them that we were in financial diffi
culty, and asked them to pray for us. The runaway inflation was

hindering the work in many areas, particularly the printing ministry

Although the work still has some financial needs in some areas, the
Lord supplied all that was necessary for the time being. I'm sure

these trials have made all of us rely more upon God to supply our
needs. When the escudo and the dollar fails-He'11 still be there.

Some of you were asking about the cost of living in Chile, so

I thought I'd give a run down on the costs of several items. One
problem we face is that most prices never stay the same for an en

tire month. Everything increases by about 20^ each month. The U.S.
dollar is re-evaluated on almost a weekly basis that helps offset
some of the increase, but not all. Gas is about $1.50 per gallon a
new V,W. sells for $10,000, and a Chevy pick-up about $15,000. All
electrical items, housing, and machinery are sky-high now. However

food is basically cheaper here: sugar-50(t; a lb., flour-35(t: lb., milk

50(1; a gallon., most cuts of beef-Sl.OO a lb,, apples-15(j: a lb., eggs
50(J: a doz., artichokes-40(j; a doz., avacados-40<{: a lb., and a nice
chicken about $1.50.

In closing, I have some more exciting news! We have begun an

intensive calling program on the graduates of the Bible courses. Two
or three teams will be calling weekends (as people are seldom home
any other time) to challenge the students to make a decision for the
Lord, We want to avoid past mistakes and make sure that the Chileans
understand that a commitment to Christ is a lifetime adventure and

not a spur of the mement, emotional decision that can be changed at

a later date. Already, many have stated their desire to accept Jesus
and be immersed. Some have gone out of their way, and come down to
the Center, asking to be baptized. It is from these we will see truly
committed Christians emerge, many of whom will be leaders.
Our efforts are centered around four major sections of Santiago;

Providencia, Las Condes (where we live), Nunoa, and La Reina. These

are primarily middle and upper middle class people, the vast majority
of whom have never been touched by the Gospel. Our goal is to bring
enough people to a commitment to Jes^ 3 Christ that we can start a

church service at the Center on Sunday nights. Although all of the

missionaries meet on Sunday mornings for English church, the regular
church time for Chileans is on Sunday night. Our target date for this
is Sunday, November 10.
Be praying with us about this new step we
have taken in our mutual desire to see God's Son glorified.
In His Service,
