P3 Research Paper - outline
Natural Alternatives to Treat People with Autism
Many parents of children with autism do not know where to start when it comes
to treatment of the symptoms their child faces. There are quite a few different ways to
approach the issue of what can be done that wont have any harmful side effects but
many parents simply do not begin treatments until their child is beginning to approach
their pre-school ages; this may be too late for some adjustments and corrections to be
made to the severity of their autism. Treatment can be done Physically, Chemically,
Socially or Artistically depending on the age, severity, and living standards of the affected
person.
Many parents do not look into many alternative treatments because they may
seem too odd or irrelevant. Also some treatments are currently being researched and
discovered that can impact treatment in the future. Finding a treatment that conforms to
someones budget and agenda as well as being suitable for use with a specific case of
Autism Spectrum Disorder can be a long and rigorous task to apply oneself to, yet it is
also can produce the greatest possible odds for improvement. The typical choice for
parents of children with autism is to take them to a doctor and allow them to prescribe the
treatment that they suggest, but some doctors are not fully aware of the newest treatment
options and alternatives. This standardized diagnosis and prescription can cause more

Sloan 2
damage than it can to help improve the standard of living for the affected person. There
are healthier alternative treatments to decrease the symptoms of autism than to use
pharmaceuticals. While these alternative methods are not necessarily proven in all
circumstances and a few of them are based on ideas that are not original to the scientific
field they are all worth the time and effort to study, recognize, and consider in order to
find the best possible treatment for a child or person affected by autism.
Within this essay there will first be information about the dangers of
pharmaceuticals to people with autism, then there is information concerning the impact
early childhood treatments and a large number of optional alternative treatments that have
absolutely no chemical risks involved. Then there is material that regards to physical
therapies and natural dietary supplements that can decreases the severity of those
symptoms that relate to ASD. The final topic that will be involved in this informative
essay is a personal testimony from the author of this document.
Body
Topic sentence 1: People with autism have natural cellular structures that can prevent
cancer and react strongly to different medical treatments. This can be very good in
protecting a person with Autism from any further medical issues, but it can also bring on
much worse illnesses and diseases that the typical person may not receive (Darbro 2).
This is very avoidable because there are so many options to treat Autism that have no
cellular risk involved. For example, dietary treatment is easily manageable by regulating
the amount of Vitamin D and omega-3 intake in order to orient the activity of different
parts of the brain in the affected child (Mazahery 5). One example of treatment that could
be very damaging to the cellular structure of a person with Autism Spectrum Disorder is

Sloan 3
transcranial magnetic simulation because it can cause chemical reactions within the brain
that are released at unexpected times and can cause imbalance with the whole entire
bodys functions. In fact, Lindsey Obersome who is an autism researcher at Bradley
hospital in Providence, Rhode Island claims that You could make somebody worse if
you dont know what youre doing. (Denworth 69), but in that same treatment it can
have some of the most effective results out of all of the treatment options there have been
that were capable of standard use as a regular alternative (Denworth 71). While
transcranial magnetic simulation treatments do have miracle like treatment stories it is
still one of the most riskful treatments. Also the family of the affected person must find
the means to pay for the treatment along with finding a doctor they can trust to perform
the treatment.
Topic sentence 2: The symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder can be drastically
decreased at a young age and can impact the person for the rest of their life whereas
medication is a short term adjustor. Tests have been run in Sri Lanka on a Cohort of
children with Autism Spectrum Disorder when they were within the ages between 18 and
40 months old. They simply made advancements in socializing the children and getting
them started on their basic educations (Perera 2). While this does not sound like much of
a treatment it is critical to get the child started with their education at the same time as the
typical child of their age and socialize them so that they can perform the same schooling
as the rest of the children their age. If they can be socially advanced and stay on the same
page educationally with others their age, then they simply have decreased the long term
symptoms other their disorder for the rest of their life (Perera 5). There have been quite a
few books written about Social treatment and artistic treatments that keep the affected

Sloan 4
persons mind open and advancing just as the typical persons would no matter what their
age is. These are some of the most essential steps to the treatment of a person or more
importantly a toddler with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Brodino 2). One major issue stated
by Brodino is that Complementary alternative medicines (CAM) are more commonly
used by Caucasian families with high economic income. (2). This can be easily changed
if the government would stop backing the major pharmaceuticals and side with the
scientific research that so many people are putting their time and energy into.
the subtopic of education in those who are affected by ASD is majorly important
because getting a standard education and socializing with our peers is key in our
individual development. The most effective way to help those who have high functioning
or moderate autism is to keep them in standardized schooling and to push them to do their
best to keep up with their peers (Rubin 37). While they may struggle regardless of their
level of motivation and intelligence their symptoms will be managed more easily because
they will have a regular, consistent schedule and they will have a prime amount of
socialization with Tudors, counselors and teachers as well as fellow students (Rubin 36).
Topic sentence 3: Physical therapy can be approached many different ways and it has
none of the chemical side effects pills do. One great example of physical therapy that is
proven to be effective is massage therapy in children who have recently been diagnosed.
Treating the child within the first three to five months can decrease the severity of their
symptoms by nearly a third (Silva 53). Massage therapy can also support the relief of
stress for parents but Silva also claims that its something that if its not done, it doesnt
work. (53). While this treatment is only proven in young children there is being research
currently done so that this treatment can be achieved with older children. Of the

Sloan 5
symptoms that were managed more efficiently speech and language skills were some of
the most impacted. Also the massage therapy is extremely effective in socializing the
child due to the physical contact that ties to the therapy (Silva 53).
Another physical therapy which can be used with persons with severe autism or
mental disabilities is aerobic exercises. Using aerobics to strengthen the fine motor skills
and overall body control of an affected person is crucial in keeping them from causing
self-harm, destruction of properties, and making actions inappropriate for the current
environment (Elliot, Dobbin 566). This therapy also makes advances in the educational,
vocational, and social fields for the people in the treatments as well due to the
environment that they are in and the social setting they are in during their exercises
(Elliot, Dobbin 566).
Conclusion
With the recent information that has been stated it is quite clear that there is a
numerous amount of possible alternative treatments or therapies that can be conducted to
decrease the severity of the symptoms from Autism Spectrum Disorder. The
responsibility of being informed and intelligent on the subject of what treatments would
be the most effective in the specific case of an affected person is directly dependent on
the parents or family of the affected person. Also the effectiveness of many of the
treatments depends on the seriousness and devotion applied when the person is in the
process of their advancements. A strong piece of incentive for studying this document
closely and applying oneself once they have read this is to allow society as a whole to be
more open-minded and allow new alternatives to be used in all fields of medicine rather

Sloan 6
than supporting major pharmaceuticals and allowing their society to dictate the norms for
a disorder or illness.
