2. (10 points) Two different ideal gases (gas A and gas B) are placed in an
adiabatic chamber as seen in following figure. Gas A and gas B are separated by
thin rubber film. The volume of ideal gas A is 1/3 of the total volume of the
chamber and ideal gas B is placed in the other side of the chamber. The rubber
film is suddenly ruptured and two gases are completed mixed without any
chemical reactions. What are the internal energy change and entropy change at
the process?
Rubber film
The gas has constant specific heats with cv 0.7165 kJ/kgK and R 0.287
kJ/kgK.
(a) Sketch P-v and T-s diagrams for the cycle. Label all state points with numbers.
(b) Determine the amount of heat for each process, in kJ/kg.
(c) Determine the cycle efficiency, in percent.
4. (20 points) Consider an ideal Rankine cycle with reheat. Steam enters the
turbine at 8 MPa, 480C and expands to 0.7 MPa. It is then reheated to 440 C
before entering the second-stage turbine, where it expands to the condenser
pressure of 0.008 MPa. The net power output of the cycle is 100 MW.
(a) Sketch a T-s diagram for the cycle. Label all state points with numbers.
(b) Determine the thermal efficiency of this cycle.
(c) Determine the mass flow rate of steam, in kg/h.
At 8 MPa, 480C,
At 0.7 MPa,
5. (20 points) Consider an ideal refrigeration cycle that uses R-134a as the working fluid.
The temperature of the refrigerant in the evaporator is -20 oC, and in the condenser it is
40 oC. The refrigerant is circulated at the rate of 0.03 kg/s. Determine the COP and the
refrigeration capacity of the system. Also, how much entropy generation does the
refrigeration system have in the expansion process ? Each process is steady state, with
no changes in kinetic or potential energy.
