Score

1. (15 point) Consider a simple compressible thermodynamic system, and suppose

this system undergoes the following two thermodynamic processes. The first
process 1-2 is a reversible adiabatic expansion such that the system energy
decreases by the amount of work done by the system. In the second process 23, heat is supplied to the system quasi-statically with no work involved such that
the system may recover the initial energy or E3=E1.
(a) Discuss whether or not the first process 1-2 violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics.
(b) Discuss whether or not the second process 2-3 violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics.
(c) In the combined process 1-2-3, we have 0=E 3-E1=Q1-2-3 W1-2-3 or the absorbed heat
Q1-2-3=Q2-3 is 100% converted to work W1-2-3=W1-2. Discuss whether this violates the
2nd law of thermodynamics or not. Justify your answer.

2. (10 points) Two different ideal gases (gas A and gas B) are placed in an
adiabatic chamber as seen in following figure. Gas A and gas B are separated by
thin rubber film. The volume of ideal gas A is 1/3 of the total volume of the
chamber and ideal gas B is placed in the other side of the chamber. The rubber
film is suddenly ruptured and two gases are completed mixed without any
chemical reactions. What are the internal energy change and entropy change at
the process?
Rubber film

3. (20 points) An air-standard cycle is executed in a closed piston-cylinder system

and is composed of the following four processes:
1.2
1-2: Polytropic ( PV constant ) compression from 0.1 MPa, 15C to 2 MPa
2-3: Constant pressure heat addition to 800C
3-4: Isentropic expansion
4-1: Constant volume heat rejection

Final Exam, MAE211

The gas has constant specific heats with cv 0.7165 kJ/kgK and R 0.287
kJ/kgK.
(a) Sketch P-v and T-s diagrams for the cycle. Label all state points with numbers.
(b) Determine the amount of heat for each process, in kJ/kg.
(c) Determine the cycle efficiency, in percent.

4. (20 points) Consider an ideal Rankine cycle with reheat. Steam enters the
turbine at 8 MPa, 480C and expands to 0.7 MPa. It is then reheated to 440 C
before entering the second-stage turbine, where it expands to the condenser
pressure of 0.008 MPa. The net power output of the cycle is 100 MW.
(a) Sketch a T-s diagram for the cycle. Label all state points with numbers.
(b) Determine the thermal efficiency of this cycle.
(c) Determine the mass flow rate of steam, in kg/h.
At 8 MPa, 480C,
At 0.7 MPa,

h = 3384.4 kJ/kg and s = 6.6586 kJ/kgK

hf = 697. 22 kJ/kg, hfg = 2066.3 kJ/kg,
sf
= 1. 9922
kJ/kgK, sg =
6.708 kJ/kgK
At 0.7 MPa, 440C, h =
3353.3 kJ/kg, s = 7.7571
kJ/kgK
At 0.008 MPa,
vf
3
= 0.0010084 m /kg, vg =
18.3204 m3/kg
hf
= 173.88 kJ/kg, hfg =
2403.1 kJ/kg
sf = 0. 5926 kJ/kgK, sg = 8.2287 kJ/kgK

5. (20 points) Consider an ideal refrigeration cycle that uses R-134a as the working fluid.
The temperature of the refrigerant in the evaporator is -20 oC, and in the condenser it is
40 oC. The refrigerant is circulated at the rate of 0.03 kg/s. Determine the COP and the
refrigeration capacity of the system. Also, how much entropy generation does the
refrigeration system have in the expansion process ? Each process is steady state, with
no changes in kinetic or potential energy.

Final Exam, MAE211

6. (15 points) Saturated vapor R-134a is entering to an uninsulated compressor at

-20 o C and flow rate is 0.03 kg/s. The compressor consumes 3kW of
electricity. The exit state of the refrigerant is 40 o C and 1 MPa. The heat
transfer from the compressor is with the ambient air of 30 o C. What is the
entropy generation rate for this process?
