ARIES R2003.11

Introduction
Welcome to ARIES 2003.11. This document contains important information and last
minute changes related to ARIES 2003.11 not documented elsewhere. ARIES 2003.11
represents the ARIES component of The Engineers Desktop. The Engineers Desktop
introduces Landmarks solution for integrating our Drilling, Production and Economics
suite of applications.
Engineers Desktop integrates functions across the E&P life cycle, bringing together
drilling and production data, as well as offering the analytical tools to manage projects in
one system.
This integration of data and applications into the Engineers Desktop enables cross
domain workflows tightly linked to the earth model through visualization technology.
Integrating these technologies ultimately offers a marked increase in your ability to
maximize the productivity of new and existing fields. Through this integrated approach,
home office personnel can plan and control their fields with lower risk and greater
flexibility.
Landmark built the Engineers Desktop around a single database called EDM. After
entering the data just once, you can access and manipulate it from all of the different
applications offered in this suite.
For more information on The Engineers Desktop, please refer to the Engineers Desktop
Release 2003.11 Release Notes.

Licensing
For Engineers Desktop Release2003.11, all PC and UNIX products including the
Engineers Desktop applications support use of FLEXlm licensing, which is the only
licensing mechanism supported by Landmark. FLEXlm licensing has been supported with
past releases, so many clients will already be using this licensing mechanism. FLEXlm
licensing is available for networked application and standalone application use. FLEXlm
standalone licensing may be used in conjunction with a network card or through a FLEXlm
dongle (bitlock) where no PC network identification is possible.
Previous versions of the Drilling applications and the Production & Economics
applications supported use of a proprietary Landmark licensing mechanism called
Netsecure for networks. Additionally, Sentinel bitlocks attached to a PCs parallel port
could be used for licensing of standalone installs, Crypkey licensing was also supported
for standalone installs. Use of Netsecure, Sentinel bitlocks and Crypkey has been
discontinued by Landmark and is not supported for use with Release2003 products.
The EDM 2003.11 applications require that a new EDM license feature be available from
the customer's licensing server in order for the Engineer's Desktop applications to run.
The EDM license is handled as a Group Checkout for each application user on a particular
PC. Only one EDM license is checked out for all Engineer's Desktop applications being
run by a user on a single machine. Therefore, clients will need to acquire a set of EDM
licenses based on their expected concurrent user level. Please contact your local
Landmark representative for EDM licensing.
Due to changes with Landmark's licensing mechanism, customers who have previously
installed and run EDM 2003.5 only need to add EDM licenses as stated above in order to
run R2003.11 applications. However, clients who have not previously installed and used
EDM 2003.5 applications (e.g., are upgrading from W2000 versions of the Engineering
applications direct to R2003.11) must re-license their products as well as add EDM
licenses by contacting their local Landmark representative. Refer to the LAM 2003.0Windows Release Notes (LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the
\Products\EDT\Install\LAM folder on CD 5, for details.

IMPORTANT! If you have a version of LAM server older than 7.2e (Release 2003.0 and later), you
must uninstall it before installing the LAM 2003 server.
Failure to uninstall all previous versions of LAM Server before installing LAM Server 2003 will result in
a duplicate FLEXlm service that replicates itself until it crashes Windows.
The procedures for uninstalling LAM server are detailed in the section LAM Server - Uninstallation
Notes in the LAM 2003.0Windows Release Notes (LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the
Products\EDT\Install\LAM folder on CD 6. Products that were licensed under the older server will still
work with the new LAM server.

IMPORTANT! If you are using a FLEXlm dongle (bitlock), you must install FLEXlm 7.2i on the
standalone or client machine.
To install FLEXlm 7.2i for bitlocks (either parallel or USB):
1. Go to your installed \LAM\bin folder, and run flexid.exe to install the bitlock drivers.
2. To request a bitlock license, run \LAM\bin\lmtools.exe. Select System Settings tab; provide the
value you see in the FLEXID9 field.

Enhancements and New Functionality

ARIES 2003.11 focuses on implementing the EDM data model. Along with the new
functions required for this new data model, ARIES 2003.11 includes fixes for numerous
bugs. For a list of these fixes, please see Fixed Problems on page 9
Landmark has developed several tools to migrate existing data to the EDM model. For a
complete discussion of the changes to the data model and the data migration process,
please refer to the PE Data Migration and Utilities document on Volume 15 of the
Engineers Desktop CD-ROM set. You can open this document during the installation
process or find it in the C:\Landmark\EDT\Documentation folder after installing the
software.
An explanation of a few important EDM integration features appears below.

New Entry Level Database

For the Engineers Data Model, ARIES supports Microsoft MSDE databases at the
entry level, as well as SQL Server and Oracle databases for larger implementations.
EDM does not support Microsoft Access databases.

New Sample Database

You have a new sample MSDE database in Engineers Data Model format available.
To examine it, just select the Sample Database option on the ARIES Installation
screen to copy the EDMAriesSample.zip file into your \ARIES\DB folder. Remember
to unzip the sample database and establish an MSDE connection to it before using it.

ARIES Schema Changes

Landmark made the following schema changes to accommodate the new data model.
For a comprehensive discussion of changes to the data model, please refer to
PE_DataMigration_Utilities.pdf, which you can access through the Install shield or the

ARIES R2003.11

Known Problems

MSDE Administration Utility cannot attach ARIES Transported Databases

When you create a new MSDE database with the ARIES Program Manager Data
Transporter, the MSDE Utility requires the log file to have the same name as the
database file. If these names do not exactly match, you receive the following message:
"There is no .LDF file with the same name."

Currently, the ARIES Transporter adds a _log suffix to the LDF file name. To solve
this problem, simply change the name of the log file (LDF) to match that of the data file
(MDF). For example, you would rename SampleEDM_log.ldf as SampleEDM.ldf, to
match SampleEDM.mdf.

Performance Issues with Older Oracle Drivers

Using the Oracle 8.1.7 driver can result in decreased performance. Upgrading to
version 8.1.7.8b fixes this problem.

Phase Changes Not Refreshed in RMS

If you make a change to a Phase in RMS, you must completely exit and re-enter RMS
to have the changes recognized.

During EDM Migration, ARIES Loses References to Property Data Using Old
Databases
When using an older ARIES database in which the PROJLIST table has not been
updated for old Projects, you may receive the No Master Record Found error. This
error results from the INTKEY and PROPNUM being different from those in the original
database. To prevent this error, update any projects in which the INTKEY and
PROPNUM do not match by using the Upgrade.exe tool and checking the Update
ProjectList Table option when the upgrading the original database prior to migration.

Unable to Open Reports after Migration

The Data Migration tool does not migrate reports to the new version, so you must
recreate these reports. The error occurs if you do not have full access privileges on the
ARIES or database folder. To fix this error:
1. Log off as a restricted user with USER privileges, and then log back in again as a
Local Administrator.
2. Open the Engineer's Desktop 2003.11 ARIES folder, right-click the ARIES folder
and select Properties... from the dropdown menu.

R2003.11 Release Notes

March 2004

Landmark

ARIES R2003.11

3. Click the Security tab, and in the Group or user names section, select the name
of the restricted user.
4. In the Permissions for Users section, click a check mark into the Full Control
check box under the Allow option and then click the OK button.
5. Log off as a Local Administrator, log back in as a Restricted User and launch
ARIES.

The ARIES Transporter will not create a new MSDE Database unless the user
has trusted connection rights and the MSDE Server Role of Database Creator
When the Administrator of a machine installs MSDE, other users do not automatically
have the ability to access or create MSDE databases. Only the Administrator receives
these rights by default, and the Administrator must in turn grant the appropriate rights
to each user who would like to access and run ARIES.

During EDM Migration, the Run Query for Missing Columns fails on a Newly
Installed Database.
Some databases may have some column names no longer supported in the new data
model. To correct this problem, go into DBS Setup and adjust the ShowID for valid
columns.

Windows XP Unspecified Error

Due to Windows XP permissions, you may receive an error message stating that an
Unspecified Error has occurred.

Reporting Factory Could not be Initialized Error

The ARIES Report Database is created as a User DSN. As such, no one apart from
the Administrator who installed ARIES can use the ARIES Report Wizard, as the
ARIES Report Database key is not created for other users. To fix this problem, create
an ODBC entry pointing to a copy of the reports database for each user.

ARIES Crashes when Exporting Reports using ODBC Formats

Due to a problem with Crystal Reports 9, ARIES will crash if you select ODBC - MS
ACCESS DATABASE as the format for exporting from the ARIES Reporting module.
You can read more about this problem in this article.

ARIES R2003.11

Data Migration Case Sensitive Database Owner Name

Upon launching the ARIES data migration utility, you must enter the Owner of the
destination EDM database in the bottom section of the dialog. This entry must exactly
match the name used when the destination database was originally created, including
the correct upper and lower case letters. Note that ARIES uses dbo for SQL Server/
MSDE and EDMADMIN for Oracle as the default Owner names when it creates an
EDM database.
If the name you enter does not match (e.g. you enter Joe instead of JOE), the data
migration will proceed, and the resulting database will work. However, when you use
this database later, some item lists within ARIES (such as project or graph scheme
names) will not display all of the items.
You can easily correct this problem after the migration by editing the Owner column
items in the affected tables:
1. ARDBSLIST
2. ARPROJECT
3. ARGRAPH
4. ARGRAPHCURVE
5. ARCURVE
6. ARPLOT
7. AR_SETUP (note that this last table does not actually use Owner)
