Assignment - final
Note: Answer all the questions. Figures are not to scale, you may assume dimensions if necessary.
Abbreviations are used as per standard construction practice.
Q1 (P1.1, P1.2, P1.3, P1.4) 20%
Answer following questions. You may use sketches if necessary.
a)

Discuss the importance of hydrological studies to an expressway design and construction.

b)

What are the factors that will look at in determining the hydrological budget for an expressway
project?

c)

A small catchment of area 155ha received a rainfall of 10.5cm in 90 minutes due to a storm. At
the outlet of the catchment, the stream draining the catchment was dry before the storm and
experienced a runoff lasting for 10 hours with an average discharge of 1.5m3/s. The stream
dried after the runoff event.
(Note that the rainfall occurred in the first 90 minutes and the rest 8.5 hours the precipitation
was zero.)
(i) What is the amount of water which was not available to runoff due to combined effect of
filtration, evaporation and transpiration?
(ii)What is the ratio of runoff to precipitation?

d)

What are the purposes to construct storage reservoirs? Appraise their difference by using
appropriate scenarios.

e)

Following table gives the monthly flow data for a proposed reservoir site.
Once the reservoir is constructed, it is expected to supply water to a town which requires
20 x 103 m3of water per month. What should be the storage capacity of this proposed reservoir? (Use
the table method to solve)

Q2 (P2.1, P2.2, P2.3) 20%

Answer following questions. You may use sketches where ever necessary.
a) Discuss the different types of rain gauges in measuring precipitation. You may use sketches
wherever appropriate.
b) The normal annual rainfall at stations A, B, C& D in a basin are 82.5, 68.2, 76.28 and 92.01cm
respectively. In the year 1975 the station D was inoperative and the stations A, B, C recorded
annual precipitations of 91.11, 72.23 and 79.89cm respectively. Estimate the rainfall at station D
in that year.
c) For an identified catchment in Colombo area, the calculated time of concentration (tc) is 65
minutes. The rainfall intensity will be given by

Considering that the rainfall duration is equal to the time of concentration calculate the rainfall
in mm.

Q3 (P3.1, P3.2, P3.2) 20%

Answer following questions.
a) Determine the water quality parameters for the drinking water, considering Sri Lankan Standards
(SLS).
b) Infiltration capacity data obtained in a flooding type infiltration test is given below.
Table 02:

For this data plot the curves of i) infiltration capacity vs time ii) infiltration capacity vs cumulative
infiltration and iii) cumulative infiltration vs time. Analyze and obtain the best values of the
parameters in Horton's infiltration capacity equation to represent this data set.

c) Irrigation department is in a process to do a reservoir operation for Wahagahapuwewa in

Anuradhapura for a capacity enhancement to increase the irrigable area. To estimate the
evaporation, Kanthale station data (Reference Crop Evapotranspiration) and the area capacity
curve of the reservoir was used. It is as below; (Kp = 0.8 was used in the calculation of Eto).
Table 03:

Q4 (P4.1, P4.2, P4.3, P4.4, P4.5, P4.6) 20%

Answer following questions. You may use sketches where ever necessary.
a) Given below are the ordinates of a 6-h unit hydrograph for a catchment. Calculate the ordinates
of the direct runoff hydrograph (DRH) due to rainfall excess of 3.5cm occurring in 6h.

b) Mention the factors which are considered as catchment characteristics?

c) Calculate the discharge (Q) at the outfall from a watershed whose sketch plan is as given below,
using a suitable method. The catchment characteristics and the lengths (L) from manhole (MH)
to manhole are also given in the figure 1.
Assume flowing full velocity of 0.9 m/s in the sewer and the 10-year frequency curve. Rainfall
intensity curves are given in the attachment
