The United States is known today as a representative democracy.

This
means that due to the amount of people in the US, it would be impossible to
include everyone in all decisions that are made. As a result, officials are
elected to represent the public on matters that cannot be addressed by the
common man. However, the world is constantly changing along with the
issues the public wishes to be addressed. How then, can one rely on these
officials to accurately represent them in the case there was a recent issue if
they are the same officials from a few decades ago? The simple answer is,
they cant. It is becoming a more common practice for those in congress to
make a career out of their time in office. This meaning, positions that were
once filled for only a few terms at a time, are now being filled for lifetimes.
Incumbent politicians are dominating in elections, leadership opportunities
are being taken from very capable men and women, and an influx of new
politicians and ideas are no longer existent. Congress needs term limits.
A position in congress is the opportunity to be a voice for the people, to
make a difference and to serve society. It is not intended to be a lifelong
profession. How then, are congressmen holding office for multiple
generations? As there are no term limits for those in congress, a position can
be held indefinitely. This along with the fact that an incumbent politician will
almost always garner the most support and the most money come election
season, it makes it near impossible for new politicians to make office in
congress.

Due to congressmen staying in office for longer periods of times,

younger politicians who dont share the same views as these older politicians
are not being elected into office. Some may say this is no cause for concern
and those in office are already extremely experienced and know what they
are doing. However, younger politicians tend to have views that are more in
line with those of a younger generation. Current issues are seen differently
through their eyes than the eyes of older men. Does it not make sense to
have someone in office who can better relate to current issues? There is a
plethora of young men and women who are extremely capable and in some
cases, more capable of holding congress positions, but due to the lack of
term limits, and the incumbent effect, these young people are denied the
opportunity to represent their country.
Congressmen are becoming career politicians, staying in office for
lifetimes. New ideas and proper representation by younger politicians is held
to a minimum due to the reelection of incumbents who have held office for
generations. An office in congress which once meant serving ones society
and doing things for the greater good is now looked at as an office of power.
Without term limits, congressmen will gain more power and there will be no
new and fresh ideas brought forth. Congress needs to have term limits.
