The figure given shows the map of Garlsdon town, which has population of 65.000. Two
different positions is needed to be considered as two possible locations for a new
supermarket.
Position S1 is lied in the northwest of Garlsdon and is located in the countryside area.
It is situated between railway crossing Garlsdon and main roads connecting Garlsdon to
Hindon with distance of 12 km, thus Hindons people can visit it by either train or car.
On the other hand, position S2 is situated in the town centre which has no traffic zone
although it is crossed by the railway. It is also surrounded by housing area of Garlsdon so
makes Garlsdon people easy to reach. Brandons people also can do it, but they should drive a
car to visit S2 from the southwest of Garlsdon. Cransdon town lying in the southeast of
Garlsdon is also connected to Garlsdon by railway and main road thus its people can go to S2
although it has distance further than Hindon and Bransdon.
In conclusion, both S1 and S2 have advantage although S2 seems easier to be reached
by all Garlsdons neighbors than S1.

Two charts shown above give information about two main reasons for study among
students and amount of support they received from employers. Both of them is differentiated
based on five different groups of age.
Two main reasons for study given in the first chart are for career and for interest.
Students under 26 years of age make up the highest number people who study because of
career purpose. This comes down gradually until over 49 years of age which hits around
20%. Second reason seems contrast with first reason : it incrases gradually until reaches the
highest point (70%) at over 49 years of age group.
Meanwhile, from the other chart, it can be inferred that employer support has the
highest point in the age of under 26 then it seems decline gradually and reach its lowest point
in the 30-39 years of age group. After that, percentage of employer support inclines in the
group of 40-49 and over 49 respectively.
In conclusion, career is likely taken by people as reason for study, especially people
under 26 years, if it is compared with interest. Moreover, people under 26 years of age also
receive the highest employer support among the others.

The graph given above shows number of overseas students who had residence in
Australia from year 1982 until 2000. The overseas students selected are come from Indonesia,
Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore.
In 1982, none of all students from countries selected had residence in Australia,
except Malaysia, with number of students around 5000. During five years after that, both
Hong Kong and Singapore students number remained limit to zero, while Indonesian students
number increased gradually. Hong Kong student numbers showed dramatically increase in
1987 but was followed by constant number for a while, then this pattern tended to be repetead
until 1997. Meanwhile, students from Singapore only showed the gradually increase in
number until 2000. Number of Indonesian increased drastically in 1994-1998, thus made up
into 25.000 which is the highest number among all countries during those years. Malaysia
number of students showed different pattern which are remained constant for almost 11 years

in the point of 10.000, then increased gradually until reached its peak at 1997. However,
Singapore was the only country that did not have students numbers fall in year 1999.
In conclusion, generally, number of students from all countries increased during year
1982 until 2000.

Aviation is one of transportation type having important role to peoples life. It offers
advantages which is not offered by other transportation, including both time efficiacy and
convenience. Although it has some effects on air traffic condition, like pollution, noise, and
airport construction, I believe that government should increase the air traffic tax because

Nowadays many countries pay a big attention to health problem because of existence
of many kinds of diseases. Some countries run the motto prevention is better than cure.
This causes some changes in government policy, including diversion of a large proportion of
countrys health budget from treatment to health education and preventative measures. I argue
that the kind of policy is appropriate because it can give the society more education about
health and can protect the larger number of people from disease.
One of the causes of health problem in society is that people are not well-educated for
maintaining health. Prevention from disease is important and needs a proper education. In
fact, the proper education is not always complicated, it is just needed to be easily understood
and applicable by people : keeping the environment clean by littering in the suitable can, for
instance. Eating the healty foods, washing hands before eating, and doing exercise regularly
can also be taught in this education. Health can be maintained more effective by habituating
this content of education thus it can rise peoples awareness. That is why the policy is
appropriate to be done.
Another reason is the efficiency of the money spending. If the money is spent for
treatment, it will only cover the small number of people due to limitation in producing many
kinds of drugs. The drugs are also difficult being well-distributed. In the other words, if the
policy is implemented, the money spent will be focused to conduct good education for
society and it can cover the larger number of people being protected from illness.
In conclusion, prevention is more effective action than treatment for keeping people
healthy, thus the diversion of the budget is the best solution for accomplishing it.

The chart given shows the amount of time spent for leisure activity in a week by
people classified in five different employment status and different gender. The information
was collected around year 1996 until 1999.
It is obviously figured that males were included in all groups of employment status,
except employed part-time and housewives, while females appeared in all groups. Both
groups unemployed and retired hit the peak with the same amount of time, which was around
85 hours per week for males and around 70 hours per week for females. Besides, full-time
employed men had the same leisure time level with housewives, namely 50 hours per week.
However, females with full-time employed status only had slightly difference amount of
leisure time with females with part-time employed status.

In conclusion, during year 1996 until 1999, males had the less amount of leisure time
than females, who got the leisure time in each group of employment status.

The tables given show the number of British people that travel abroad during year
1994-1998 based on purpose and destination. This data is the result of survey involving
100.000 British people.
In the first table, there were four different groups of reasons why British people did
travelling abroad, which were for holiday, for bussiness, for visiting friends and relatives, dan
other reasons. Data shows that most people did travelling abroad because of holiday, with the
large difference of number compared to the three other reasons.
During those years, people also tended to visit the western region other than north,
europe, america, and other regions, with the number of visits became the highest among all.
Intriguing to note that none of those people visited europe and america area.

Criminal problem is always suffered by many countries thus many policies are
established to tackle it, for instance, the death pinalty. Some people think that without the
punishment, society will always be haunted by violence and crimes. I agree that the death
penalty must be encouraged because it will rise the deterrent effect and diminish people who
threaten stability and security of the society.
There are many ways to overcome the crimes, but the deterrent effect is always the
most effective way. Deterrent effect can prevent both dissemination of the crime and the
desire among the society for being the criminal person. For example, in China the death
penalty is conducted well for who is involved in corruption and bribery case, thus none of the
Chinese people has courage to be involved in those cases. That is why the death penalty is the
most effective way to decrease the crime level in a country.
The other reason is that the death penalty can diminish (even eliminate) people who
threaten the stability and security of the country with those criminal actions. The absence of
this people sometimes can make society feel safer and get more comfortable lives. For
example, the terrorists should be eliminated because they make a horrifiying condition and
kill many civilians.
In conclusion, death penalty should be implemented in many countries, especially the
countries which have a high level of crimes. However, the implementation should be
followed by consistency and a sufficient investigation of the case to prevent punishing
blameless people.

The information related to land degradation are given in form of a chart and a table.
The pie chart shows some causes affecting the worldwide land thus becomes degraded. The
table revealed the percentage of land degradation caused by deforestation, over-cultivation,
and over-grazing in three regions : North America, Europe, and Oceania during the 1990s.
The main reason that causes worldwide agricultural land degraded in the highest
percentage is over-grazing, which is 35%. It exceeds the other two reasons, deforestation and

over-cultivation, which possibly lead the degradation about 30% and 28%, respectively.
Another reason only covers 7% for being the cause of the land degradation.
According to the table, each of three regions had different percentage of land
degradation based on those three main reasons mentioned before. 3,3% area of North
America was degraded by over-cultvation and that was the largest percentage among the
other reason. The main reason for degradation of Europe region was deforestation, which had
the point of 9,8%. On the other hand, land of Oceania suffered 11,3% degradation, mostly by
over-grazing.
In conclusion, over-grazing is the most common cause of land degradation in the
world and Europe had the largest area degraded among two other regions.

Education for being good member of society is important to be taught to children.
Some people agree that this education should be given by parents, but others think that
teachers in school help the children to learn this better. This following passage will give some
explanation for both opinions based on different point of view.
Parent is person who children firstly met since they were born and indeed has an
obligatory such as give the proper education to children. Education on how to be good
members of society is one of the forms of those education. Besides, parent more often meets
the children in home and has more interactions with them. But, unfortunately, some parents
are not too close to their children because of some reasons, for instance, working. That
phenomenon makes parents only depends the education on school.
Regardless to education at home, school also becomes a right place for embedding
these values of being good people in a society. School has more systematic ways of teaching
than parents. Moreover, it also has more interactions involving many pupils and teacher, thus
very effective to learn about community. It can also be supported by establishment of class
community and chief of class election, or even bigger community such as students
association. They can learn about leadership and cooperation.
In conclusion, both education by parents and by teachers are important, even can
support each other. Parents can benefit from their closeness to their children and school can
support by systematic education and many interactions with pupils it has.

Three given pie charts show UK school expenditure every decade, from 1981 until
2001 and there was some changes happened. The type of spending were divided into five
catagories, namely teachers salaries, resources, furniture and equiment, insurance, and other
workers salaries.
The teachers salaries had the greatest percentage of total spending during those years.
In 1981, it made up 40% then increased 10% in 1991 and was followed by insiginificant
decrease about 5% in 2001. On the other hand, furniture and equipment cost had biggest
drastic changes among other catagories because in 1991 it decreased 10% then in 2001 it
increased drastically about 13%.Other workers salaries indicated the gradually decrease from
1981 until 2001, which was around 6-7% decrease. The smallest spending percentage of all
was insurance and insignificantly increased every decade.
In conclusion, the type of expenditure should be the highest paid by British school
from year 1981 until 2001 was teachers salaries, while insurance spent the least amount of
money among all.

Cambridge 8 test 2 task 2

A thing that keeps improving and making innovation nowadays is technology.
Technology also influences in improving communication system among people, thus can
change interaction culture. In my opinion, this can lead to both positive and negative effect,
therefore makes technology itself as both a good and a bad development.
There are two advantages that technology can give in development of peoples
communication. First, technology can increase a closeness feeling of a person towards others
despite actually they are not in close position. In the past, people are difficult to make any
direct conversation to their friends and relatives in other country or even just neighborhood
city, they just rely on letters that spend much time waiting for the reply. Today, people has
phone, email, any social medias, and video calls, thus can have very efficient conversation.
Second, technology makes information sharing become cheap. This means that people do not
need to meet when they want to share some information to others, considering the
transportation cost is far more expensive.
In contrast, technology also possibly makes closeness among people become distant.
It is good for a family to keep gathering for having dinner together, but it will be different if
we see each person become distracted by cellphone or other type of gadget, then
unconciously she/he creates different world. This minimizes the interaction between member
of the family (yet they are in the same tabel at that time!) thus further effects can be seen in
the future, like miscommunication and many more. Moreover, technology makes people
become lazy to meet, so they prefer meet each others virtually, such as chatting, yet direct
meeting is still important in order to increase the level of happiness and avoid
miscommunication.
In conclusion, technology is created to make our life easier, but it can be a negative
development for creating different communication culture if we use it unwisely.

The graph shows the increase in global water usage in km3 over 100 years period
based on sector. The table gives information about amount of water consumed in Brazil and
Congo in 2000 for irrigating and fulfilling each persons need.
According to the graph, water comsumption in each sector had risen over this period.
From 1900 to 1950, amount of water used by agriculture increased gradually from 500 km3
to 1000 km3. After 1950, the amount sharply inclined until met the usage of 3000 km3 in
2000. On the other hand, industrial sector had far less water comsumption compared to
agriculture, which only spent nearly 0 km3 in 1900 and 1000 km3 in 2000. However,
domestic sector only used one-third of those consumed by industrial sector in 2000, although
it had similar level of consumption with industrial sector in 1900.
Water consumption in Brazil was much larger than in Congo. For irrigating land,
Congo only needed 100 km2 of water, whereas Brazil needed 265 times much. In addition,
Brazil (with population of 176 million) needed 359 m3 for individual comsumption, while
Congo, which had population only 5.2 million, consumed only 8 m3.
Cambridge 6 test 1 task 2
Nowadays, advertisement has great influence for increasing the level of popular goods
consumption, yet those goods are not too necessary for certain society. In my opinion, the
statement is truly happened today that our society can not avoid. This phenomenon posibbly
caused by advertisement persuading power and social medias that now can be easily accessed
by people.
Advertising has been a effective way promoting a new product to people. There are
many improvements created to persuade more people and I think, this causes the rise level of

consumerism in our society. For example, beauty industry advertisement has proven the
power of persuading women by using video and photo editing technology, thus creating
manipulation of what they called natural beauty. The effect can be seen on the high sales of
cosmetics these days. High sales of computer tablets pose the same pattern as well, which
most people do not really need it.
High sales of some goods is also affected by high level of peoples interaction in
social medias today. Promoting certain goods can also be done by this interaction. For
example, today people tend to share what they feel about certain product to their friends or
relatives in social media, especially about product that gives benefits. In other words, they do
the other form of promoting and persuading indirectly. Unfortunately, the product
recommended is not always what people really need for their life.
According to the explaination, I agree that the power of advertising (either direct or
indirect) affects much for increasing level of consumerism and succesfully make people
neglect their basic needs.
