Infographic Assignment/Reflection
Topic of your infographic/poster
The topic of my infographic is a reading comprehension strategy titled U.N.R.A.V.E.L.
In my infographic I provide the steps of U.N.R.A.V.E.L. and a brief description of the
benefits of each step. This infographic was created to be informative and frequently
referred to before and during instruction.
Your target audience and grade level
The target audience for this infographic would be both teachers and students in the
elementary and secondary classroom. Since this is a reading comprehension strategy
infographic it can serve as a classroom anchor or student aid. It is appropriate for all
classrooms in which the reading of extended text is required. It was created specifically
for ELA and Reading classrooms and students. However, it is appropriate for all content
area classrooms including Science and Social Studies. The grade levels that this strategy
and infographic is appropriate for would be grades 3-10, or specifically ages 7-16. This
could also be used in the higher education classroom or adult education/remediation
programs.
The instructional design process you followed to develop the assignment
The instructional design process I followed to develop this infographic assignment is the
ADDIE Model. A (analysis of the goal/objective). I wanted to provide both a visual and
informative reference tool to support student and teacher implementation. D (design the
flow/graphic), D (Develop) this deliverable in an attractive and informative medium such
as an infographic. I (implement) I provide succinct explanation of each step that was easy
to read and easy to understand. I also shared the purpose for each step in terms of helping
reach the strategy objective.
How your project can be used for teaching or supporting a classroom lesson, and the
Importance of using infographics/posters/ in the classroom.
My project can be used to build student skills in the critical area of reading
comprehension. This infographic and be referred to in the classroom for an extended
amount of time, providing students with a visual aid that is both instructional and
informative. This highly functioning method of communicating information is a vital tool
for 21st century learners and classrooms. Posters and infographics can be positive
constants in a classroom. Even when curriculum topics change, students can always refer
to previous concepts for the purpose of lifelong learning.

The principles and elements of visual/media literacy and/or Mayers multimedia

principles that you employed for the assignment.
When creating this infographic I found 2 of Mayers Multimedia principles to be most
appropriate: The Multimedia Principle. This is the principle that suggests students learn
better from words and pictures than from words alone.
I also employed Mayers Pre-training Principle. This principle states students learn better
from a multimedia lesson when they know the names and characteristics of the main
concepts. Being that U.N.R.A.V.E.L. is an ongoing learning strategy, the creation of an
infographic as both a teacher and student aid is beneficial for empowering students to
build upon the steps and use it as a lifelong learning tool.
Your own definition of infographics and posters, the differences between them and their
unique educational affordances.
My definition of an infographic is that it is a visual media tool that can take the role as
instructional, informational or persuasive. It is visual/graphic dominant and
communicates complex topics in a graphic or visual way. Infographics can be both digital
and print formats. Posters are static and can be text of graphic dominant. Often they are
not used as main channels for instruction and learning. They usually highlight 1
important concept at a time and function best in print format.
A proposed idea on how students can develop their own infographics/posters (the steps
you would follow for them to produce these type of media).
Many of my students have successfully used infographics to communicate information to
their fellow classmates and me. Infographics are exciting tools for students. They enjoy
the creative control they are afforded as well as the addition of adding media to make
their presentations unique and engaging. Students can use infographics as educational
tools for the purpose of culminating projects, portfolios, data collections, presentations,
note taking and collaboration.
Reflection about challenges completing the assignment.
Every time I create an infographic I am reminded of their value. Though they require
planning and research, they are very interesting to both creators and viewers. They can
often say or communicate more than text could. It is not an easy task to create an
effective infographic. You must consider several factors such as design, multimedia
principles, objectives, appeal, and usefulness. All successful infographics are considerate
of these things. I want my infographic to be both useful and appealing to all who use it.
